2 out of 5 stars Crappy re-release, but SUFFOCATION f*@!ing rules.......2006-01-21

When I heard that these two amazing albums were going to be re-released, remastered and put onto one cd, I was very excited. Unfortunately, it's not worth the money. If you are a Suffocation fan, you probably already own these two albums.

The packaging of this CD is downright pathetic. The insert does not contain ANY lyrics or any additional pictures. In fact, the insert is downright worthless. As for the sound... I cant tell the difference between this CD and the original version. Seems like a money grab for the record company. I would NOT recommend picking this release up.

5 out of 5 stars 2 classic death metal albums for the price of one!.......2005-09-15

In my opinion, Suffocation are easily the best death metal band around. There are other great bands out there too, but Suffocation just seems to create music that shows they really know how to make the best technical death metal out there. Every song on here is great and the musicianship and vocals are simply amazing. The production may not have the same quality that Souls to Deny has but that doesn't mean it should lose points for that. Since both of these cds have become harder to find over the years, its nice to be able to get both of them in one convienent package. Overall, I highly recommend this if you are a Suffocation fan or are into death metal at all.

5 out of 5 stars F*CK YES!!!.......2005-02-15

Two brutal technical death metal masterworks for the price of one(both being EXTREMELY hard to get now)??? This has got to be any metalhead's wet dream. This is also the best thing Roadrunner has done within the past ten years (especially since they started sucking in the mid 90's-present), although they could of done a lot better on the layout and included the lyrics in the booklet(keep in mind, i'm reviewing the music, not the format of it). With that said 'Effigy of the forgotten' and 'Pierced from Within' are both equally brilliant technical slabs of brutal death metal and are still unmatchable in their vision and ferocity today! It's just that it all flows together so well, organic sounding in the way that none of it sounds forced and almost amorphous in the way they shift back and forth between various tempos. I must also note that Frank Mullen is probably my favorite death metal vocalist: bar none. Some personal favorites from both albums include "Infecting the crypts", "Liege of Inveracity","Thrones of blood","Suspended in Tribulation", and "Torn into Enthrallment" but hell, they're all good rip-roaring death metal fun, so either get this Roadrunner release(Still sucks that your hard earned money goes to such a now-crappy label) or find the cd's seperate offline it's well worth it!

P.S. They're AMAZING live!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Metal Releaso of 1995.......2007-04-03

Although, I have already reviewed the "Two From The Vault" compilation that features this album and their first album on Roadrunner, I find it necessary to give particular praise to this album on its own merits. At first listen back in 2004, I didn't care much for this album at all. I thought it was a typical Cannibal Corpse cookie monster album. When I heard it again a few weeks ago, I found a great, sludgy, monster of a metal album. It is very hard for me to classify this album to one major metal genre so I will call it death grind for lack of better terminology. Anyway, this album (and band, for that matter) blow Cannibal Corpse and its pathetic ilk out of the water by having a deeper sense of musicality. Granted, the vocals are indecipherable but as a whole, this band is not cartoony or gruesome for the sake of being gruesome. A landmark death/grind album from the masters of the craft.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Amazing!!!.......2006-09-29

I first bought this album without having ever heard of the band back in 1999. All I can say is that I had been very familiar with death metal and most all heavy music in general. I knew about Cannibal Corpse (of course), had just recently purchased "maximum violence" by SFU, read tons of articles and reviews on others including Cryptopsy, Deicide, Obituary, Immolation just to name a few. Some of the greatest death metal bands to date. Let me just say when I heard THIS band. The intricacy of the musical composition in itself amazed me. Think classical composer Bach meets the heaviest guitar distortion in the world. I MEAN THAT. To date THIS IS THE HEAVIEST RECORD I HAVE EVER HEARD. I'm not talking necessarily in terms of "heavy" being "rockin'", or having a "wicked good sound" or whatever various ways one could interpret "heavy" as an affirmation of what presents it's self as good or acceptable. I'm talking what probably was used in pre-production as custom build amplifiers that could achieve the thickest, most grinding, powerful distortion ever heard, played by a guitar. Either that or an FX pedal that was so tweeked, the mids in the frequency supported by the distortion level maxed out were near completely eliminated. That being the case what pedal could achieve such response? As a metal guitarist I must ask. In addition, the bass has such an excellent hum in it's distortion that it perfectly highlights and embodies the seeth of such 6 string grit creating a perfect guitar/bass ratio. If anyone knows or could figure out HOW these guys were able to achieve such heavy sound, THEIR "axe sound" on this album please shed some light in my direction. Anyways, I'm sure excellent miking in the studio and top notch production helped them to sound so unearthly heavy. From what I understand it's amazing what EQ-ing can do for a band's sound. But overall the drumming as well, the production on this record is definately one of the best I have ever heard on any death metal album. As a unit this band has written some very remarkable songs on this record. One great highlight to perked anyone's interest who is less familiar with death metal, is that their drummer doesn't just do the straight 16th's or, the "blastbeat" formula. He varies it up quite a bit on most songs appealling more ideally to those most aquainted with standard more commercial rock beats. I'm sure you'll agree with me; it's cool when you can play insanely fast drumming patterns but this band never overdoes it. So if you know this style of music or are just getting into this genre take my word for it when I say this is a hell of a place to start. 5 Stars all the way.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly The Greatest Suffocation Album Ever.......2006-09-25

I am a huge fan of Suffocation. I remember first hearing them over 2 years ago and their music really hooked onto me. They are a very talented, technical and brutal death metal band.

What I like about this album is that it has a dark feel to it along with its technicality. Listen to the track "Pierced From Within" with its progressive nature. That is possibly one of the greatest death metal songs ever written, and it will actually stick in your head. The drumming is magnificent, even though Mike Smith doesn't do drumming on this album and was replaced by Doug Bohn in this process. The guitars are amazing. They give off a technical and downtuned vibe that makes this album an unforgettable classic. The track "Synthetically Revived" is re-recorded for this album and it sounds more technical here.

You are going to love this album. *A la George Zimmer of the Men's Warehouse* I guarantee it.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-01-07

I don't believe I have heard any technical death metal album greater than this. It is one of the few death metal albums I can listen to without skipping a track. It has no remorse for the listener. Fantastic work by Suffocation.

5 out of 5 stars Suffocation - Pierced from within.......2005-11-05

There are many words to describe is album, but all those words combine into one: Brutal. This album, sh*t this band, describes and sets the bar for what brutal death metal should sound like. Fast, techincal, crushing, an orgasim of guitars, drums and vocals. I don't know what else to write.
