If you're only getting ONE............2007-06-16
This album is an hour and nineteen minutes of a pure, joy-filled journey over about thirty years, delivered in pretty much chronological order. All, or at least most, of your favorites are here. No point in discussing individual tracks; if you're reading this, you probably have them memorized. It's a good thing that "Better Not Tell Her" is not about me.
I have all of Carly's records. Not everybody will care to. Sad. If you only want one, start here. You will probly get hooked, and want them all.[Unfortunately, a couple are tough to find]. Carly's voice has actually improved with time, and every girl should be lucky enough to have her looks at 60. Essential album.

What can you say, really? When you get right down to it, it's the greatest band in the history of pop music, the most influential, the best writers, and whatever other superlatives you can think of. Given their phenomenal output, and their huge chart success, it's no surprise that this second volume proves every bit as rich as the first. John, Paul, George, and Ringo had that rare chemistry that moved musical mountains, with more great songs than many people have had hot dinners, and they're still affecting the course of popular music. Thirty years later, all the paths they hinted at have yet to be explored, which is about as high a testament as can be given. --Chris NicksonCustomer Reviews:

The Inner Light.......2007-04-30
The Inner Light is the main reason to buy this disc.
Also, if you feel that it is essential to have cd versions of great Beatles songs like Hey Jude and Rain, this is a good disc to have.
My disc is broken. It won't play Hey Jude. So I have to take away one star in my rating. Otherwise, this is a five star disc. I don't blame The Beatles for my defective cd, but my rating system is tough. I don't give five stars easily.

The Ultimate Beatles Sampler! .......2007-03-05
Every song on this disc is a pure pleasure to listen to, and the scope and artistry of these pieces are amazing! The way the Beatles mined such divers sources as pop, folk, jazz, metal, traditional Indian, gospel, blues, acid-rock, classical and comedy is utterly mind-boggling! I can't see how you could possibly be disappointed with this.

Score composer Howard Shore has informed this first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with his distinctly modern sensibilities. Revolving loosely around a brief, heroic brass theme, this epic is infused with a powerful rhythmic thrust and a musical range that encompasses centuries (from the Renaissance pastoralism of "Concerning Hobbits" to the fiery, Prokofiev-influenced drama of "A Knife in the Dark"). Key to the score's sense of mystery and magical place are the rich choral passages that are interspersed throughout, some so ominously gothic they make The Phantom Menace's "Duel of the Fates" sound almost sunny by comparison. Enya's contributions ("The Council of Elrond" and the song "May It Be") add a sense of organic tranquility, but it's Shore's Wagnerian-scaled orchestral score that should long be cherished by admirers of film music and hobbits alike. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

I think that the other CDs are a bit repetitive once you've got this one, even if I still like the music of the second soundtrack 'The Two Towers'. As for the 3rd sequel, I seldom listen to it as there is only one track that I like, 'The Return of the King'.
Now, this first CD of the trilogy is actually very good. Thanks to Enya, it is haunting and the songs are beautiful. There are a few eery but melodious songs like 'The Council of Elrond', 'Lothlorien', 'May it Be'. I love the change of tempo, the balance between fast and slow movements in 'A Knife in the Dark', 'Flight to the ford', and 'Amon Hen' which is my favourite piece (the Death of Boromir) with the oboe sound mixed with the beat of the drums and finaly the haunting voice of the singer. Track 17 is also worth listening. I like this CD because you've got different tempos and melodies and Anya is a great singer to me. But I also enjoy listening to Emiliana Torrini's song 'Gollum's Song'in the second soundtrack...

Although they were probably the band that most transformed rock from a singles medium to an album-oriented form, the Beatles also released many singles and EP tracks that never made it onto albums. In the U.S., Capitol turned the group's early LPs, through Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, into compilations, more or less, throwing the hit singles onto the vinyl to augment the album tracks. When the label later released the U.K. albums on CD, it posed a problem: What to do with the non-LP singles? Past Masters, Volume 1 compiles 18 of those singles, including some of their best-known tracks, running from "Love Me Do," "She Love You," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and "This Boy" to "I Feel Fine" and Paul's homage to Little Richard, "I'm Down." Essential stuff. --Bill HoldshipCustomer Reviews:

The only way to get several of these tracks other than buying this is through The Capitol Albums boxed sets. So if you don't feel like spending $60 or more, go here for some great rare Beatles!
Why don't the Rolling Stones or the Who have collections like these? Both bands recorded some quality single-only material that is now fairly hard to find, except through greatest-hits albums.
Fills in the void created when these singles were omitted from the original LPs.......2007-01-21
The two "Past Masters" CDs, to me, fill the void one might feel was created by the omission of the singles from the LPs. The fact that singles such as "Love Me Do," "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," and "She Loves You" were omitted from LPs in the first place seems a bit weird to me - someone born after The Beatles long split up (at least on paper, anyway).
But just thinking about John and Paul cranking out more timeless and poignant songs (separately and together) as opposed to insisting the singles be put on the albums attests to the fact that they are the greatest songwriters of the modern era of music.
Both "Past Masters" are essentials to a Beatles collection. - Donna Di Giacomo

Just possibly the luckiest pop musician in history (replacing hapless Pete Best in the Beatles on the eve of their EMI signing and the unprecedented fame that followed), Ringo Starr wasted no time carving out his own comfortable--and surprisingly successful--post-Fabs career in the early 1970s. This concise greatest-hits package (ostensibly a contractual-filling farewell to his longtime label) compiles all of the drummer's top 10 hits, including the evergreen smashes "Photograph" and "You're Sixteen," as well as the hit singles "It Don't Come Easy" and "Back Off Boogaloo." The charming B-side "Early 1970" (chronicling the contemporary lives of three of Starr's suspiciously familiar musician friends) is also included. It may shortchange Ringo's lovingly quirky early country & western and Tin Pan Alley collections (Beaucoups of Blues and Sentimental Journey, respectively), but it's still a great choice for hit-hungry fans. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

ITS BLAST FROM YOUR PAST WITH RINGO AND HIS FAMOUS NO NO SONG........2007-02-04
What can I say about the legendary RINGO STARR that hasn't already been said? RINGO STARR has graced us with his many talents and his most recent tours to this very day. RINGO STARR would begin his early career as a drummer from Liverpool, England as part of THE FAB FOUR or should I say THE BEATLES. When THE BEATLES broke up in 1970, RINGO would try his hand at not only a solo career, but as an actor. In the early 70's, RINGO was extremely successful at both but would slowly fade away until the movie CAVEMAN was made and released in 1981. CAVEMAN would also star Dennis Quaid, Shelley Long, John Matuszak and RINGO'S wife Barbara Bach. However, RINGO'S solo music career did have some fine moments. "BLAST FROM YOUR PAST" are the results of those moments. In my opinion, "BLAST FROM YOUR PAST" is a very up lifting and positive album which contains some very funny songs.
I will list and review certain song tracks contained in this compilation album. It is extremely hard for me to choose any one song track over the other. However, due to trying to shorten this review as much as posible, I will only list certain song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: (1.) "You're Sixteen (You're Beautiful And You're Mine)," (This is a wonderful Ringo Starr song that brings back the spirit of the 50's music. Ringo sings this song perfectly to the bone.) (2.) "No No Song/Skokiaan," (I love this song. This is my most favorite RINGO STARR song. I love the lyrics to this song. The lyrics are so funny, we can all pretty much relate to it, at least I can. RINGO sings this song with such emotion like he truly means it. I love it when RINGO sings the chorus "AND I SAID NO NO NO NO I DON'T (Sniff) NO MORE, I'M TIRED OF WAKING UP ON THE FLOOR, NO THANK YOU PLEASE IT ONLY MAKES ME SNEEZE, AND THEN IT MAKES IT HARD TO FIND THE DOOR. Enough said.) (3.) "It Don't Come Easy," (I love this up beat song. This song is produced by George Harrison. RINGO sings this song with such power that you can almost feel the rough times in his voice what it was like being an BEATLE in the early days.) (4.) "Photograph," (This is another up beat song that RINGO delivers a fine lead vocal performance. This song is co-written with George Harrison.) (6.) "Only You (And You Alone)" (This is another beautiful song sung by RINGO. Ringo sings this song like he is naturally flowing his happy and rejoicing voice from the gut and through the microphone. I love this song.) and (8.) "Oh My My." (This is another beautiful song sung by RINGO. Listening to these songs gives you the feeling that RINGO was indeed, an extremely talented individual. It doesn't surprise me that all four BEATLES were extremely talented in their own right.) The other songs such as "Back Off Boogaloo," "Beaucoups Of Blues," "Early 1970" and "I'm The Greatest" are also good songs that are great contributions from George Harrison and John Lennon. Overall, this is a very entertaining album which has some funny humor to it.
I would like to encourage everybody to purchase this album to own as part of their valuable music collection. This legendary compilation album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, RINGO STARR is here to stay. With the deaths of JOHN LENNON and GEORGE HARRISON, we now realize that a BEATLES reunion is now out of the question. RINGO STARR and PAUL MCCARTNEY are now all that remains of the original FAB FOUR. We as fans should enjoy them while they're still here while we still can. Here's to you RINGO. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. Keep On Rockin'. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE BEATLES FOREVER. RINGO RULES. R.I.P John Lennon and George Harrison. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

HIStory's 2 CDs (one hits, the other new) were Jackson's attempt to connect his glorious past to a dodgy present and--given it's commercial and artistic performance--cast a shadow on his future. Conceived as his formal coronation as the "King of Pop," HIStory's second disc instead presents Jackson as an epauletted, single-gloved Richard III. By turns paranoid, angry, bitter, sentimental, and, in one instance, possibly anti-Semitic, HIStory was less a collection of songs than a case history. A few tracks--mostly those produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis--are sleek, modern pop/soul, but too much of HIStory has the overblown vacuousness of a musician who knows his time is past, but is unsure as to how to react to the situation. --Steven MirkinCustomer Reviews:

D.S., Money, Childhood , and Tabloid Junkie are very much junk.

Great New Songs!.......2006-06-25
-.......2006-04-16
I'll be over you is an example of a toto song with good vocal, lyric, music and barrels of emotion. I think this is a truly beautiful track and once you develop enough to listen to these songs for what they are (love songs in the truest sense - could be about your dead mum!) you will see that toto are a great band on the whole. This cd is 1990 so obviously it suffers a bit from the digital of then. Ironically the songs like Rosanna that loads who buy this seem to love are the kind that suffer most compared to the vinyl releases which is only a credit to what decent tracks they are. Ones like I'll be over you translate perfectly to cd and remain as beautiful on this cd as they are on the 45 12' single.
I mean really though, generic? Of all things you could call toto how could you call them generic. Do you listen to the musicianship. The human energy put into the keyboarding, the drumming by the least generic and possibly best drummer to ever walk the face of earth. Solo's by lukather? I think you should listen again.
My thoughts on this disc are that its not perfect no, it is `artistic' as an album is and not designed/may not satisfy `best of' customers/ fast forward happy listeners (that's maybe why it's not called best of- or greatest hits.
While understandably 'past to present' means greatest hits to a lot of you, to other's it means a `vision' of what's gone on. A reflection on toto `from back then till now'
Get the essential toto if you are hoping to find a personal fav track you aren't sure is here, or if you are one of those hungry people, you like big big cd's that contain lots of avenues. This is album art. I think it is a great start and a great cd I highly recommend to anybody.
Toto. Studioperfection to the smallest fingertip........2006-02-14
it a good listen. Track 2 Africa with it`s ethnical drum beat in the beginning, and the cool "low key" vocal set`s the standard for this 80 ths hit song from Toto. Overcool studioperction this one. Track 3 Hold the Line has it all, from the beginning with the hammering on the keyboard to the last drumbeat, it lift`s you up. One of the few tracks with "fuzz" on the guitar`s which makes a glimmer touch with a small breezee of "light heavy metal" for a change. Track 4 Out of Love, sorry to say is a let down. A big one too. When this Cd came out in 1990, this track was unrelased. This ballad is a stream of cliches. Anyway with Track 5 Georgy Porgy we are back in business again with this funky song, with fresh rythmic drum beat for a change. Track 6 I`ll be over you is a nice ballad for but has much of the same problems that Track 4 has, some boring perfection elements that drag`s it down, but other wise fine.
Track 6. Can you hear what i`m saying is also a previously unreleased track, but this one shine`s for a change. It` has a certain "jazzy funk rock rythm "beat which lift`s it up. Track 8 Rosanna is a classic. Classic Toto at his best. It`s a well composed gem, which shines on every beat. Track 9 I wont hold you back is anyway a stream of cliches, when it comes to ballad sing/song writing. It`s slow ok,but this is to much "sugar cake" to spark a shimmer. Track 10 Stop Loving You, has a great instrumental synth beginning, but then it`s suddenly change`s into an ok funky beat song, with some great instrumental elements included. Track 11 99, is an early ok funky song, which sparks here and there, but it`s easily forgotten. Track 12 Pamela is a likeable song which hold`s the standard, execpt for the overkilled synth sound from the 80 ths which pop`s up here and there. Track 13 Animal is total out of t line. This sound`s like poor man`s "disco funk". The theme goes around and around, and doesn`t kick off. But anyway. Toto shines most of the time and is a great introduction to the band for beginners. Toto is anyway studioperfection to the smallest fingertip, either you like it or not.

Great second half.......2006-12-19
Released in 1974, this is Al Stewart's fifth album, depending on how you are counting. It is 42 minutes long and the transition to CD is very good.
This album had two killer tracks, the 8 minute Roads To Moscow and the 9 minute Nostradamus. In between those 2 songs was the very good 3 minute Terminal Eyes, which reminds of the Beatles Come Together or I Am the Walrus, but not quite as wierd.
The first side of the album consisted of some boring, tedious songs. It seems like Al Stewart is at his worst when he sings about the Navy (just like Lord Granville on the Year of the Cat).
This was one of those LP's where you played only one side. You listened to the other once, and would never play it again. There were many like that in rock history, like Iron Butterfly's In-A-Godda-Da-Vida or Rare Earth's Get Ready.
"Roads to Moscow" is a masterpiece, but Bruce K. got it wrong!.......2006-09-12
How can a guy get it so very wrong? One listen to this exceptional track clearly clues the listener into the time period and circumstance of the story. I cannot believe that you ever listened to this record Bruce, and if you did you should be ashamed of yourself for writing a review as wreckless as this. It is clear that you simply "made this up", perhaps after listening to the first 30 seconds of the song, or more likely, bought your information from some college term paper web site, the kind that cause their customers to flunk out of school. Sadly, people including myself have relied on your reviews to make buying decisions. This shows us that you are nothing but a fraud and should not be allowed to participate in this forum ever again.
An Overlooked Musical Gem.......2006-08-07
The best known tracks are "Roads To Moscow" and "Nostradamus" which both got some FM air play in the 70s and established Al Stewart's name among a small cult following before his 1976 album "Year Of The Cat" earned him a Top 10 spot.
Al Stewart is a great songwriter who always comes up with great lyrics. He also has a strong interest in historical subjects and that interest often finds its way into his songs.
"Nostradamus" is about the 16th French seer whose visions of the future have been the subject of countless books, articles and documentaries.
"Roads To Moscow" is about a nameless Russian soldier in WWII who is captured by the Germans, escapes, makes his way back to Russian lines and is treated as a spy and/or a traitor because he was captured and survived. The Soviet political commissars send him to a prison camp in Siberia. It's a great song; read your own interpretations into the story.
Bottom line: this album is a musical gem which never achieved the recognition it deserved. It deserves your attention; buy it.
