Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars oh, sweet powerman, where did you go?.......2006-11-02

Being as I first heard them on this album, first saw them while they were touring on this record, I think it's a great place to start. At the time, I had no idea they had 2 previous independent releases but from what I hear this album is a revamped version of "The Blood Splat Rating System" for major label release. Powerman were definitely at their prime opening for the likes of Ozzfest 97, Primus and Limp Bizkit before taking over headlining duties once "Tonight The Stars Revolt!" was released. If you were to start listening to this band, I would think the time has passed since most of their career gave way to commercial pressure. They were shooting for radio fame instead of continuing this style. I guess the genre was kind of exhausted and Powerman probably needed the "Transform"ation sound-wise. Enjoy the early years, they were great.

4 out of 5 stars The Beginning.......2006-05-21

I'm sure this album will come as a shock to fans of the Powerman 5000 who released Anyone for Doomsday and Tonight the Stars Revolt, but this album is a pretty good funk/rap metal album. I think many of these songs appeared in better forms on earlier releases, but this is still a good album, and worth looking into as long as you aren't expecting post-industrial rock with a space aesthetic.

This aesthetics of this album are totally different from the ones that would make them famous. Not only is there only one guitarist on this album, but there are also two percussionists, who would go on to become 2/3 of the Blue Man Group. Because of this, there's a lot more percussion with bongos, shakers, and various other instruments besides the drum set. The bass lines are also the focus of many songs, whereas they aren't even memorable on many of TtSR's songs. Spider's vocals are also different from what you might expect, so it might as well be a different band.

The best songs here are Organizized, Standing 8, and Neckbone, all of which feature strong bass lines and percussion. Some others that I like a lot are 20 Miles to Texas, 20 Miles to Hell, Tokyo Vigilante, and Even Superman Shot Himself. The rest ranges from good to forgettable, but none of the songs are really bad.

If you like Incubus, Rage Against the Machine, and other bands that mix funk with hard rock, then I think you'll like this. It's not as good as either of those groups, but it is a fun album, which I still play from time to time.

3 out of 5 stars Powerman 5000 - 'Mega!! Kung Fu Radio' (Dreamworks).......2006-01-09

This is basically more or less a remix of 'The Blood Splat Rating System',with the addition of two new tracks.Must admit this CD is quite a diverse project.'Mega!!Kung...' fuses the elements of rap,hip hop, hardcore and metal to somewhat take a life form of it's very own.Not exactly my cup of tea,but it was decent enough to hold my full attention.See how you like it.

4 out of 5 stars KICKIN A** FROM BOSTON MA**.......2005-09-23

It aint the greatest thing to come out of Mass ever, but they should be noted. These guys had a couple hits in 2001. They were better though before that when they had this album...

MEGA!! KUNG FU RADIO... I bought this album strictly based on the title. If you listen to STARS REVOLT and you see that the same band had an album called MEGA KUNG FU RADIO you will know without listening to it that its going to be COMPLETLEY different. THIS IS GOOD THOUGH, cuz I like KUNG FU RADIO... I like it a lot.
Its a solid metal band goofin' off, but still making solid tracks. Apparently this never really took off. I don't remember ever hearing about these guys in '97, of course, I don't really hear about them now either so....

ANYWAY, if you like funky, rap-ish, metal stuff that sometimes is just fun (even if by fun you mean gettin' in a fight) Then this is the way to go.

The follow up is not this way, although that doesn't make it a bad album, that time around they took it a little more serious.

BEST: car crash, 20 miles to texas..., standing 8

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Like "Tonight The Stars Revolt", But Still A Classic.......2005-02-13

Powerman 5000's major label debut, "Mega!! Kung Fu Radio", is a solid album. Rob Zombie's brother, Spider, leads the band. This disc may involve rap lyrics, but they aren't as terrible as Fred Durst's lyrics. My favorite song is "Car Crash", which is a definite classic. "Organizized" has a great beat to it, a little to the rap side, but this is the closest to rap I listen to. The music is just great in this song. "Tokyo Vigilante #1" sounds a lot like rap, but do I care? Not as long as this is a solid debut. Spider's lyrics are original on this album, especially on "Car Crash". He loves singing about kung-fu a lot...

This doesn't sound like "Tonight The Stars Revolt", as it says in the title. Why? Because it doesn't have the industrial elements that Marilyn Manson and Orgy use in their songs yet. It's still a great album as well.

Anyways, buy this album in any condition. Used or new would be fine, or via Napster or any other online music store.
