Solid, lovely to listen to (yes, I said "lovely").......2007-06-09

I can see planets moving in the cosmos when I listen to James McMurtry. This is an album full of great tracks. I've got other recordings of some of them, and I wouldn't prioritize any over others, because James McMurtry is so emotive that ...any particular day, even if you get a different sound, it's a good one. But for a good set of recordings on a single CD you can leave in the player or take on a trip, this is nice. I am enjoying it time and time again, and will most likely listen more to this album than my older ones, unless I'm on a huge James kick, and want to hear more of a range.

Guy Clark: The quintessential Singer/songwriter.......2007-03-24

Guy Clark is a national treasure. Simply put a gifted songwriter who capture's the essence of every day life. His rugged voice, wonderful lyrics and catchy melodies never fail to entertain and illuminate. He deals with our inner angst with humor and insight in his songs. He captures the moody moments of growing up in America during the last half century. His humor, his meticulously crafted metaphor make him one of our best songwriters. Since I heard his first album OLD NO. 1 back in the seventies he has been at the top of my list with Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, John Prine and Leonard Cohen.

This new CD American Masters Series: Best of the Sugar Hill Years will not be available until Tuesday but it contains fresh material not available on Guy's most prominent Albums. Songs in the Clark Arsenal include classics such as LA Freeway, Desperado's Waiting for a Train, Texas 1947, The Last Gunfighter Ballad, One Paper Kid, Better Days, Home Grown Tomatoes, Watermelon Dream, Immigrant Eyes, The Cape and the wonderful Randall Knife. They are part of the fabric of our culture. Those along with a hundred others songs with iconic lyrics and touching melodies are now part of his and our musical heritage. If even one of the songs on the new CD is half as good as any of these songs it will be worth the price of admission.

In short he is the quintessential singer-songwriter of his day. I always look forward to the newest Guy Clark CD and can not wait to hear this new record.

Dreamy Progressive with a hint of Funky.......2006-03-06

Hernan does a great job at bringing the best elements from the lost art of progressive and blending it with contemporary, tribal, atmospheric finesse. Each CD brings its own mood to the table and executes it with precision. The first CD is a little funkier and chill with the second CD a relentless deep progressive experience. All the while it gives some consistency with hints and accents of dreamy atmospherics that truly distinguish Cattaneo as a Renaissance Master. The first CD favs are 2, 5, and the progressive tribal luciousness of track 6. Track 3 on disc 2 is an emotive wonder as well as midway through 5. An excellent purchase that I am 100% involved with now.

This is what I believe to be Hernan at his best. Some of the best progressive I have ever heard. He is one of the best in the world and he proves it here. Both CDs are amazing. There are very few CDs that I can listen to in there entirety. Both of these CDs are included in that select group.

If you like deep progressive sound, this one is essential pick.

This album is a clear evidence why Mr.Cattaneo is so regarded in

If you're like me, bored with progressive house DJs trying to break new grounds with material that is maybe 20% danceable, relieve yourself - get this CD. Both mixing and track selection are on par with Dave Seaman's very best releases, and the style is similar. At last, here's again THAT intelligent, rich, mind-blowing, stomach-twirling house that keeps dancefloor crazy for the whole night and haunts you for weeks. Would love the guy come to Moscow more that any other DJ in the World.

The Sweethearts Of The Blues.......2007-08-06

The above caption was hung on this young duo from New Orleans - Shirley Goodman (age 14) and Leonard Lee (age 15)- the minute they cut I'm Gone b/w Sweethearts in late 1952 for the Aladdin label. Backed by Dave Bartholomew & His Orchestra (legendary bandleader for Fats Domino, The Spiders, Lloyd Price, and Bobby Mitchell and a member of the R&R Hall of Fame) this was an instant success in the R&B market, going to # 2 early in 1953.

But then, shackled with the caption, they were handed one boy-meets-girl song after another and it wasn't until 1955 that they hit it big again with Feel So Good which, b/w You'd Be Thinking Of Me, also rose to # 2 R&B and, staying there for two weeks, chalked up 25 weeks on the charts (Johnny Preston would have a # 14 Hot 100 hit with the A-side in 1960, calling it Feel So Fine).

The next year they cut the classic Let The Good Times Roll, which Lee wrote, and b/w Do You Mean To Hurt Me So it not only hit # 1 R&B but put a pretty good dent in the Billboard Top 100 charts going to # 20 that October. In December I Feel Good b/w Now That It's Over hit # 3 R&B and # 38 Top 100.

Their final hit on Aladdin came in 1957 with When I Saw You b/w That's What I Want To Do which reached # 14 R&B in the spring. Not long after the label folded and the duo hooked up with Warwick and then Imperial into the early 1960s before splitting up.

Listening to Shirley on cuts like Why Did I? and Confessin' it evokes visions of the great Little Esther Phillips, and the influence of the Fats Domino-style is clearly evident.

After a long absence from the singles charts Shirley came back with a bang in the mid-Seventies as Shirley (And Company) to take Shame, Shame, Shame to # 1 R&B and # 12 Billboard Hot 100 in 1975, followed by Cry Cry Cry (# 38 R&B and # 91 Hot 100) and, in 1976, I Like To Dance (Shirley And Company Featuring Peppi Marchand) which topped out at # 91 R&B - all on the Vibration label.

Two very influential artists and a worthy addition to your collection.

Even though the sound quality is good, there is only 8 track on the cd, which by my standards, isn't many!

Am I glad I bought this one! A previously unreleased rare gem by the great Loleatta Holloway, "I May Not Be There" in a glorious 10:21 minutes. Besides that cut, 4 others were either previously unavailable or unissued. And as the CD title says, in their 12" format. A must have!

the second collection was better than the first. the second cd has better songs on it plus it had unissued tracks. these three sets are basibally thev same as origional salsoul classics 1-4. in my opinion, the best on this set are: when your x wanrts you back, block party, i mat not be there and hold your horses.
