Converge duck all the rules of hardcore and heavy metal and out of a loophole comes a new beginning. These guys live on a sonic continent near the street screech of Candiria and the fluttering high-speed precision of Dillinger Escape Plan, sounding something like Slayer backed by armies of curb-cracking skateboarders instead of hell's minions. Their uptempo doom is shaded with downbeat indie-rock tones instead of infernal majesty, and there's even a hint of British-style shoe gazing on the slow five or six seconds of this CD. Mostly what you get from this 10-year anniversary release is a frightening debacle of giant objects hurtling over your head, while impassioned but utterly distorted vocals fend off certain destruction with little pleas for humanity. It's an unpredictable and elegant triumph, softened to offer catharsis rather than total brutal assault. --Ian Christe --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars A Review of Converge's Album - JANE DOE.......2007-01-08

Can brutality be beautiful? Converge doesn't stammer to answer this question. Their response is an insanely fast and intense as hell conglomeration of metal, poetry, spirituality, and splendor. If music could somehow be an infusion of words, notes, and volatility, the end result for this band would seemingly be an incineration of sound. Converge has been together since late 1990 and within months of that, recorded their first demos. Ever since then, they've been putting out unyielding albums and don't show any signs of letting up. Sometimes dark, elegiac, cryptic, and despair-ridden, Converge writes some of the most eloquent tunes in music today. No stranger to addressing contemporary issues as well, they are one of the most underrated bands to grace this industry. Recommended Songs: "Minnesota," "My Unsaid Everything," "Albatross," "Heaven In Her Arms," and "Concubine."

5 out of 5 stars The noise-core blueprint........2006-12-30

This disc has everything. As far as hardcore goes, it gets no harder. Seriously an inspired musical feat that challenges the listener. Now, if you are into Hatebreed-esque hardcore, this ain't it. This is in the same ball park as Dillinger Escape Plan, Botch, etc... No other band can touch this release, however. Amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2006-10-24

This album is beautiful, epic, and tragic. It really is a masterpiece for people like me who enjoy big, arranged, thematic, concept albums, but I'm not sure if someone who likes metal would be into this.

Fav songs - Fault and Fracture, homewrecker, broken vow, JANE DOE (one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard). Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Here we go..........2006-08-17

I've been avoiding writing a review for this album for some time now, in fear of not being able to convey the wonder it is. How can you put a mind-altering masterpiece like this into words? A number of wildly different adjectives can be used to describe this album, such as frightening, beautiful, horrific, majestic, chaotic, etc. One undeniable word for it; passionate. Every last note of this record is shrieked, pounded, and hammered as though it is the bandmembers' last chance in this world to truly express themselves. The conviction of this band is astonishing, unlike any other band I've heard in my 27 years. I can say with absolute certainty that this album with never leave my personal top 10, all genres included. I never really gave hardcore music a chance until listening to this album, and since then, few in the genre have lived up to my first impression. Every fan of heavy music should at least hear this album. I'm almost too personally attached to this record to give it an honest review, but music has always been a subjective topic. The title track alone is worth stacks of inferior CDs...

everyone seems to think that this is a REALLY good metal album. i may not be giving it enough of a chance or something, but in my opinion this album is just irritating. they seem to have no concept sync and rythm. the vocalist sounds like he's stuck in a large metal tube that makes his voice both grating and hollow. amazon went as far as comparing this band to Slayer, but this band isn't good enough to lick the sweat from Kerry King's butt cheak. If you like Slayer, and you hate crap, then you won't like this cd either.
