Poor volumn control.......2005-09-21

The music is wonderfull, especially the real thunder. Unfortunately the sound is either too low or too high and the volumn control has to be adjusted constantly to hear the whole CD properly.

THE GRAND CANYON SUITE - An American Classic.......2003-11-26

This is an abolutely masterful rendition of The Grand Canyon Suite! By far the best I've ever heard. Erich Kunsel is to be highly praised for this masterpiece. The recording quality is magnificent and it comes with two versions of the thunderstorm movement; a traditional one with instruments only and an utterly fantastic one with actual thunderstorm recordings which is extremely well done. What a wonderful American classic! I venture to say that anyone listening to this performance could not help but develop a much greater appreciation of Ferde Grofe and the musical heritage he left this country.

(I bought the album for the Suite alone, but the Porgy and Bess is no less skillfully performed and it makes a noteworthy coupling.)

I have been looking for this CD for some time, since I damaged the tape which I bought brand new. It is a very good Reggae album, and I highly recommend it for purchase still, yes, even after all these years!! Actually, it is my favorite from Aswad.

crossover favorite.......2000-09-19

"Distant Thunder" is only distinguishable in that the crossover hit "Don't Turn Around" (later covered by the inane Ace of Base)is on it.

In terms of a pure reggae album, this lp by no means qualifies. Indeed, the funk/soul elements that now dominate Aswad's music are front and center on this album, though reggae elements permeate the album, as well as some of its messages on tracks like the powerful "Set Them Free."

Fans of more traditional reggae will likely cringe at this album, as I did when I first heard it. Fret not- Aswad made credible reggae lps. Look out for their "Hulet" and "To the Top" lps for a better look at their reggae material.

As a crossover lp, this cd comes recommended, but fans of more pure reggae should look elsewhere for their fix.

Distant Thunder.......1999-11-19

I would recommend this album to anyone, who is in the market for some good reagge music. I was once the proud owner of this album many years ago when it first came out, since then I have upgraded my Aswad collection to their Anthology and other albums. This is definetly the album that put Aswad on the map.I personally think this album brought out the personal best of Aswad, with such songs as "Don't turn around & Feelings". I have been a fan of the group for many years, and I still continue to support them and their efforts. Personally, I think that they are one of the best bands to come out of Great Britain, along with UB40 & of course International Singer Maxi Priest. Because of Aswad & UB40 they paved the way for other groups and singers (Musical Youth). Thank you for all your years of music,that you have so generously given to us throughout the years. Good Luck! In "Life on the Mississippi," Mark Twain said, "I scratch my head with the lightning and purr myself to sleep with the thunder!" Thunder, the sound made from filling the vacuum created by streaks of lightning, is a miraculous noise. It signals the coming of rain. Its origin helps form the chemical soup that becomes the source of so much life on the planet. It is a reminder that we are humbly at the whim of wildness, after all. Aside from creature voices, it is one of the most reassuring sounds I know of.

DISTANT THUNDER was recorded in Belize during a gentle passing of cumulous weather cells some distance away. Never loud or intrusive, the event lasted a little more than an hour, the rain and mild rumbling nearly lulled me to sleep it was so calming and even reassuring. It was clearly Nature's way of showing a mild face.

Very Relaxing.......2004-02-24

This CD puts me to sleep every single time I play it. It's very relaxing. It's so convincing, that sometimes I even believe I can smell the rain. The thunder is rumbling so there are no very loud sudden claps to startle you. On the downside, there is a bird that gets on my nerves a little bit, especially in the first part of the CD. The loud chirping does die down eventually. After a little while what few birds you do hear are far enough in the background where you really don't notice them too much and can focus on relaxing. But I absolutely love the thunderstorm and think this CD deserves 4 stars (although I'm still on a quest to find a thunderstorm without ANY birds).

Noted for both tight composition and lush instrumentation, the team of S. John Archer and Ron Satterfield have been nominated for the Grammy award four times. For the most part they have an exuberant rhythmic style that lays down a groove and then hauls the listener down the road with them. While they are not the only musicians to approach contemporary instrumental music in this fashion, they are one of the most talented pairings in the business.

Distant Thunder, dated 1987, was their big break into popularity. The works vary in style from the celebratory vibrations of Spring Dance to the quieter, more contemplative After the Rain and Woodland Cathedral. But rarely does Checkfield's work come anywhere close to somnolent dreaminess. There is a certain purposefulness to the compositions - a clear sense of development and direction.

Another thing that sets Checkfield apart is their willingness to include scat and other vocal instrumentation in their work. When they do it is rarely center stage, but arises so easily that one second, you don't hear it, and the next you are riding along side. And then, just as easily, it disappears. Satterfield has a natural voice for this (listen to Spring Dance) and I with there was more of it. Close listening reveals even more unexpected depth.

Very, Very good. Nosferatu still better........2002-10-26

If you have Nosferatu, get this. You will thank yourself later. An excellent Classically inspired speed metal band of unmatching fury and skill. Nosferatu, i feel, is a better album, but this one is a VERY close second. If your a fan of Helstar, get this ... it's a must have. If you never had a Helstar CD, i would recommend Nosferatu first, then this one. I think Nosferatu is a little more polished. Distant Thuder still rocks completely, so don't get me wrong. I just had to give it 4 stars because i feel Nosferatu is PERFECTION! Distant Thunder still kicks immense explitive! Enjoy!

Helstar : Most Under-rated Heavy Metal Band Ever??.......2002-09-04

How I, among countless others, overlooked Helstar back in the late 80's is beyond me. Helstar is awesome old school Heavy Metal. It's fast, very melodic, and at the same time very complex. These guys are all very talented musicians, and deserve to acknowledged. I love this CD, and since I've bought it, I can't get it out of my CD player....

I'm a huge Iron Maiden/Fates Warning fan, and have been since the early 80's. Helstar is a great mix of both. If you haven't heard Helstar yet, don't wait another day, but this now!!!!

I like "A Distant Thunder" more than "Nosferatu", but these guys are without question, one of the most underrated Heavy Metal bands of their time....

Texas Old School.......2000-08-31

What can I say, I guess I have to disclaim that I went to high school with these guys. That won't stop me from saying that they are one of the best, hardest rocking, old-school metal bands around. From the pumping drive of 'The King is Dead' to the lyrical genious of 'Abandon Ship' and on to the comical value of 'He's a Woman, She's a Man', this CD will become one of your regular listens. I only wish I could go back to the day and see this band in the small clubs I used to. This CD is a must buy for any serious metal fan.

This CD is pretty cool. Jaz from Unity Klan breaks off and does her own thing with style. There are so few good female rappers, much less Christian rappers, that the good ones simply shine with brilliance. Jaz knows what she's doing and her words are God filled and uplifting. My favorite song from this CD is "No Doubt" featuring Jah Word. The peppy beat keeps my feet moving and keeps a smile on my face.

This CD is great for helping relax young children at night, as well as adults. Makes great background music for dinner parties, or romantic moments. Very calming, melodic and beautiful, also good for yoga. I give this CD to all my friends and relatives having babies as a shower gift, and everyone loves it!

The Indianapolis based group is comprised of Clinton Hughey, the melodic-indiedream-rock guitarist of Manners For Husbands, Karl Hofstetter, the deafening and horrifying drummer of Melk the G6-49, and scarecrow-skinny old-testament prophet Daniel Paquette on bass. Hughey's hypnopompic melodies, Paquette's clairvoyant lyrics, and Hofstetter's idiot-savant drumming all add up to grind-folk/sleep-soaked/mystic-schizophrenic-post-monastic-trance-rock album of the year. Paquette's lyrics have a childish intelligence, a juvenile sensitivity to the perilous exigencies of the human conditions.
