3 out of 5 stars CD had a scratch down the middle.......2007-06-14

Very quick shipping but the CD had a scratch that made it not play correctly on some of my various players, but it did play on the better ones, so I'm not complaining, just alerting the seller to double check products closely.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Sophmore Effort.......2006-12-07

The Alice Cooper Band's second album sees the band still recording for Frank Zappa's label. The music starts to turn in the direction of the material that would later make them famous. No real macabre stuff yet, but the album is definitely a progression from their first one. The album was produced by David Brigs who is probably best known for working with Neal Young. The opening track, "Mr. And Misdemeanor" has always been a favorite of mine and a great example of Alice's talent for playing on words. "Shoe Salesman", "Below Your Means", "Return Of The Spiders", and the short but cool "Refrigerator Heaven" are all good tunes. The finale of "Beautiful Flyaway" and "Lay Down And Die, Goodbye" is also a great way to end things. The Alice Cooper band would be signed to Capitol and hit the big time with their next release. "Easy Action" would be a strong stepping stone to get to that point.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Album.......2006-08-16

Easy Action is one of the highest underrated albums I've ever heard in my love for classic rock music. It is my personal favorite of the first seven Alice Cooper albums consisting of the original band members. I strongly recommend this album to anyone who is a die-hard Alice Cooper fan, or to anyone who enjoys "feel music." There are lyrics in this album which would later re-appear in future albums.

5 out of 5 stars alice for president.......2005-11-29

I stumbled across this album,(and it's predecessor,"pretties for you") sort of by mistake-(the best mistake I ever made). As a young teen, I had heard "I'm Eighteen" and "Ballad Of Dwight Fry" on the radio and I was IMMEDIATELY hooked. I just HAD to have the album these two songs came from. Not knowing the name of the album those two songs were from, I started to randomly buy Alice Cooper records. First I bought this one, then pretties for you. Though I didn't get the two songs I was looking for, I was NOT disappointed. Alice became my NUMBER ONE FAVORITE rocker instantly!! The heavy guitar work is what did it for me,(at the time, I was just starting to learn to play guitar). The guitar work on those two albums topped ANY guitar work I had heard before. It was not only excellent, it was so different than what everyone else was doing at the time,(the style, the sound, the raw grittyness, etc.), Not to mention the powerful vocals Alice belted out. Together with Dennis' bass and Neil's drums, this WAS a band to be reckoned with! Oh yea, I eventually found out which album "Eighteen" and "Dwight fry" were on and bought it too, along with every other album Alice would ever make!!

4 out of 5 stars Alice Cooper - 'Easy Action' (Capitol).......2005-09-27

Originally released in 1970,as this was the original band's second lp.About as good as the first effort 'Pretties For You'(see my review). As I remember,BOTH albums were pretty much a stiff UNTIL 'Billion Dollar Babies' became a million seller. After the Alice Cooper Group had become world known, that's when fans became interested in their early works such as 'Easy Action'.You can hear their Zappa influence. As for myself,I've never been that much of a Frank Zappa fan. Also felt the band's first two records showed just how much Alice&crew were,in fact ahead of their time.'Easy Action' is like part weird psychedelic and part hard rock.Tunes here I thought were impressive include "Mr.&Misdemeanor","Below Your Means","Return Of The Spiders"(dedicated to Gene Vincent)and "Lay Down And Die Goodbye".One of Cooper's lesser known gems.Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Gets Better with Every Listen..........2007-05-29

If you are a fan of blues-based, dirty garage-rockin' Detroit R&B flavored Rock & Roll, this is it! Members of a couple legendary bands (and a couple lesser-knowns) got together and made some great music...for a little while, anyways.

If you are lookin' for soundboard-quality, perfect-fidelity live footage, you ain't gonna find it here. These recordings are definitely low-fi, but they sound fantastic. Some of these shows have circulated on bootleg tapes for some time, but here we have a few of 'em all together in a great lookin' box and extensive history/liner-notes. Fred was the reason the band never really moved beyond "local" status. According to the liner notes, it appears he got sorta bored and wanted to move on. After the band broke up, he and wife Patti Smith both went on hiatus for a fair amount of time.

Is it worth $70? Well, that's debatable. What is NOT debatable is that you have hours of listening enjoyment supplied by the drum-crushing beats that Rock Action Asheton provides (always underappreciated), Fred 'Sonic' Smith's chainsaw riffs, and Scott Morgan's soulful crooning. This is definitely a piece of Detroit history and if you like that style of balls-out garage rock, you found a real gem.

NOTE: The band minus Sonic Smith backed up Iggy on his '78 tour of Europe. Some of those shows are floating around the internet...

5 out of 5 stars This is Rock n Roll.......2007-05-11

Amazing is pretty much all I can say about this box set, American Rock n Roll at it's finest, Just enough of that Detroit dirt & sleaze that we all know and love, But also the technical musicianship of Fred "Sonic" Smith that gives it the seriousness & power that cannot be duplicated. It has been said that City Slang is the perfect rock n roll song, I'd have to agree.

5 out of 5 stars A No-Brainer.......2007-04-23

If you love rock and roll, this is a no-brainer.

If you loved the MC5, this is a no-brainer.

If you listen to Fred Sonic Smith and hear one of the greatest guitarists in the history of rock and roll, this is a no-brainer.

The Second Chance show (disc 4) is worth the cost of the boxset alone.

CITY SLANG from the Second Chance show is worth the cost of the boxset alone.

Can you see where I'm going with this?

How these guys flew under the radar for so long is beyond me.

After I listened to this, I wanted to throw away most of my CD collection, cuz it paled in comparison.

I didn't, of course, but...

In a perfect world, I'd make copies of this and give one to every teenager out there and tell him/her..."This is what rock and roll is all about. You can thank me later."

Think about it...Sonic Smith and Scott Morgan on guitars, Gary Rasmussen on bass, and if that ain't enough, Scott "Rock Action" Ashton on drums.

Turn it up and turn it loose...this is rock and roll at its best!

4 out of 5 stars Classic Detroit Rock from the crypt.......2007-01-09

Before you buy this box set, be sure that you have all of the classic Stooges/Iggy Pop, MC5, Mitch Ryder, and any other favorite Detroit recordings. Now if you are still hungry for that hard gritty urban sound BUY THIS BOX. Four live shows and two discs of various studio pieces all add up to a lost treasure. Like most treasure some pieces are more polished than others but this is a find for fans of the Motor City sound.
The earlier recordings sound fine in the car and the later live shows pass audiophile muster. I have to pay careful attention not to turn it up so loud that I fry my Vandersteens.

5 out of 5 stars Straight Forward Rock!.......2007-01-03

I was a little sceptical of a box set w/ mostly live performances b/c I never really got into "Live" too much but this blew me away. Unlike many bootleg type material (particularly lots of Iggy stuff out there thats not worth it) the sound quality is great. The production all around is A+ and if you like good balls to the wall rocknroll you cannot go wrong w/ this CD.

    4 out of 5 stars A Valuable Historical Documentary.......2007-05-16

Yes, this box set does start off with an entire disc devoted to the complete recording sessions of "I've Got A Right" and "Gimme Some Skin" along with a couple of one-offs. Boring? Depends on your point of view. Many regard Rhino's complete Fun House recording sessions to be an invaluable document of the development of that album despite the fact that a whopping 24 versions of "TV Eye" are included there. Even though "I've Got A Right" was never officially released on an album, the same interest should apply here. For those who routinely collect The Stooges, this disc is essential. For the rest, it is a valuable historical document of the band at work... a documentary.

The rest of the material in this box features material that has been released before, but generally as (semi) bootlegs. Excepting the second disc, which also features high quality studio rehearsal sessions, the remainder of live recordings are indeed lower than hoped for. However, any true fan of Iggy and The Stooges should have been aware of this fact before spending the big money.

With that in mind, the inclusion of this material in a cohesive boxed set should not be considered a minus. Instead, this set is representative of what The Stooges sounded like shortly before (disc one) and after (the remainder) the release of Raw Power... again, a documentary from the early 1970s. Regarding this package as such, one should be able to overlook the sound quality and consider the historical value instead.

Hey! These live recordings were the best available... none of the live recordings of Iggy and The Stooges from that time period were magnificent, sound quality wise. Still, complete shows are provided here and if one can get used to the less than desirable sound (as should be the case for any true fan of this band who collected the bootlegs), there is plenty of material here to keep those of us who cannot get enough of the original Stooges quite happy (especially considering the fact that the bootlegs are now difficult to find). This slick packaging is also a plus.

Would I recommend this as a starting point to those just coming to Iggy and The Stooges? No! Certainly, beginners need to start with the official releases. But for those who are beyond this point, this set is essential.

2 out of 5 stars Buyer beware, this is for uber fans ONLY.......2006-03-15

On the face of it this collection should merit at least five stars. Studio outtakes from the Raw Power sessions coupled with live Stooges shows, should be an incredible collection right? Well... no. The studio stuff while fairly well recorded compared to the live stuff anyway, contains an inordinate amount of filler including 13 takes of "I Got A Right". Come on, I don't give a stooges back side for that many alternate recordings, instumental versions, false starts and mistakes of any song no matter how good it is. That level of geekdom is just ridiculous. So, a little repetitive in the studio department, well the live stuff should save it right? Er... no. The live material is below average 1970's era bootleg quality, and while the performances are decent, the recording is so AWFUL the experience is ruined for me. In fact it's so bad that I couldn't listen to any of the shows all the way through even once. Thank god I borrowed this CD from a friend before plunking down my money. If you're an Iggy completist you may find value in Heavy Liquid, as for myself I found the experience severely lacking and very frustrating. Ah... what might have been.

4 out of 5 stars Buyer beware of quality.......2005-11-12

I feel bad doing this becuase I love Iggy and the stooges but the quality on this set is pretty bad. All the live recordings are worth listening to and probably owning but the quality is very rough and can get frustrating. It's like the first Beatles Anthology set: the material is amazing but the quality is bad. On the plus side the studio outtakes are decent quality wise and amazing content wise. The packaging is also very nice. I just though I'd share this information before you drop all the money on the set. If you are a Stooges fan don't hesitate purchase now but if this is your introduction you should probably wait.

4 out of 5 stars For Fans Only - But Worth It.......2005-08-28

I bought this mainly for the outrageous packaging. As someone lucky enough to have acquired the Funhouse box several years back, this was a must-have companion to that set for me. I groaned when I saw the track listing for Disc 1: 13 takes of "I Got a Right?" Who in their right mind could sift through this stuff?

Here's the deal: If you love the "Raw Power" album, then you need to get this. It's a true sign of Iggy and co.'s genius that those 13 "I Got a Right" takes are not only listenable, but intriguing. Hardcore fans will marvel at the painstaking process the band goes through to get the song down, each increasing try with more fury and intensity than the last.

Once you get through the song duplication of the first disc, the rest of the box showcases show rehearsals and incredible (but lo-fi) live recordings. If anything, these discs present a band as disciplined as any other, and are a real treat for James Williamson fans. For me, he, as much as Iggy, is the real heart of the "Raw Power" album.

Two beautiful booklets, jammed with unseen photos, essays, and vintage article repritnts, plus two stickers make this box a delight for true Stooges freaks. As the previous reviewer said, buy it now before it's gone. You know you need it!

4 out of 5 stars Great rare Iggy.......2005-08-01

If you missed out on Rhino's Fun House sessions box set, get this one, which chronicles the Stooges final years. Some of the live stuff is less than hi fi (but not awful sounding I should note), but that is no matter the performances are incendiary. Sure, it's expensive, but if you really like the Stooges, it's a must have, and you'll only be kicking yourself when it goes out-of-print. It also has tons of photos of Ig in action by Mick Rock that I've never seen anywhere else. Those guys must have put on a heck of a show. Nobody makes music like this any more. -- Hank

5 out of 5 stars The 3rd Box Set in the "Easy Action" Bolan Series.......2007-06-03

Upon hearing that Easy Action was getting ready to release this 3rd Box Set, I pre-order it right away. It arrived in this weeks mail. It is a mountain of music to go through, so I will only touch on a few things.

The Box contains 6 Discs, 5 Music and 1 DVD. I have not made it through them all, but I will say having listened to the 2 Demos Discs I was impressed, and delighted. These tapes somehow had escaped the hands of bootlegers over the years. It is wonderful to hear the songs from "Electric Warrior" and "Slider" being worked out acoustically. I will dip into the live stuff next...If you order this CD direct from Easy Action they send you a bonus disc that fits in the box. That disc is the 1971 Weeley Festival Concert recording.

The quality of the product that Easy Action releases is outstanding. The booklets, the photos. Amazon carries all the Easy Action Records releases. Check out the "Total T.Rex 1971-1972" Box, and the amazing "A Whole Zinc Of Finches" Box, which is filled with ultra-rare Tyrannosaurus Rex recordings. If you are not hip to the Tyrannosaurus Rex stuff, you should be, start with "Unicorn" or "Beard of Stars", get the remasters. It is not "Electric Warrior" it is a horse of another colour to be sure, completely impossible to classify. More acousticaly orientated.

While these releases are not cheap, they are indeed worth every penny. Treat yourself, and support this record label. Amazon has all their releases. Check out their website. It is wonderful that there is still a label with an obvious love for the music they release, and the stewardship they show for this body of Marc Bolan's work that was left behind should be commended. The task could not be in better hands.

I'm not sure what's going on here... I found this here on Amazon for around 7.50... I thought maybe I'd get just one of the discs, but no, my broke a** wound up getting the full six disc set, and it is a Stone Cold Monster!! Everything a 5 fan has been waiting for and more! If you run across this, it's worth whatever they're asking for it..!!!

4 out of 5 stars back to detroit.......2006-06-30

A lot of material to wade through. Some good, some not so good. Electra Records showcased the band in my humble opinion, in a way they were never really able to achive again with the Atlantic label. "Kick Out The Jams" IS the legacy of the MC5. Period. It defined the entire music scene in '69 and enabled a lot of other great local bands to find their way into the record racks. Unfortunately, the MC5's window of greatness was rather dimunitive and it's the legend that remains the biggest attraction today. I still remember my dissapointment spinning "Back In The USA" for the first time with Jon Landau from Atlantic at the helm. Teeny bop nonsense pressed from a blown out master. Twenty years later I bothered listening to "High Times". Still, the mystique remains. A White Panther button instead of the two lame stickers included with the box would have brought a knowing smile to anyone who had been there.

        5 out of 5 stars Moving Music.......2005-06-21

This is the best so called punk music I have ever heard. It touches something inside me the power and rawness and brilliance of these recordings. The mc5 have been called the fathers of punk. I believe they are the fathers of modern rock and alternitive music as well. They are 100 times better than the sex pistols, new york dolls, etc they don't come close. this group ROCKS check them out.

4 out of 5 stars Great, But Not Without Flaws.......2005-06-05

Purity Accuracy takes the cake as far as bringing together the best of the Total Energy cd releases from the 90's and puts them into one convenient package for the MC5 fan. Although some lack of care in the tracking and tracklisting of some of the discs is evident.

The first disk is sonically superior to all others for the material previously issued (Babes in Arms, Total Energy releases.) The rehearsals are not exactly that, its more like some different mixes and vocal takes to go with the usual songs, although theer are quite a few rehearsal sounding items, especially the Back in the USA era stuff. The High Time era tracks are excellent, no missteps with any of these, including the interesting although short "Over and Over" demo. The following pre-HT demos of Skunk and Sister Anne, both pretty interesting as well. The Back in the USA material gets a bit dicey however. Yes the bass is slightly more audible, but the boxey sound of most of the stuff can be a turn off. Also, there are far too many straight ahead instrumentals on the disk, adding nothing to understanding their process of the recording of the album. Tonight sounds a billion times better with the intro they had for it and the Human Being Lawnmower it still one of their very best, although its hard to see how it sounds very different from the album version.

Disk 2 is the pre-Kick Out the Lams material and for the most part is extremely excellent. The early singles on the disk sound great, finally remastered as good as they can be. The other demo stuff still sounds as good as it does on the '66 Breakout cd. Adding the bonus rare live cuts is a good touch to round it out. The early versions of Looking at You and Black to Comm from their high school gig are bloozey-great. The Looking at You instrumental is again a fairly uneccessary addition.

Disk 3 is the 1970 gig at the Saginaw center. The most annoying thing about the box set is the fact that this show was simply duped onto the cd, containing the annoying 3 second breaks between the songs on the original "Teenage Lust" version of the cd. The other complete show on the disk do not have the breaks. Very annoying when you're listening to concert in it's entirely like this one. The concert itself is pretty good with some rare covers. The professional nature of the band does lack the energy given by the pre-1969 concerts, although once you get used to the style, you don't mind it so much. The mix gets better as the concert goes on, achieveing the best mix on the james brown cover. The concert does lack in vocals for most of the time. However, the end meddly is excellent, with a great version of Black to Comm. Teenage Lust is not played again in the meddly, it is a misprint.

Disk 4 is odds and ends from the 1968 Grande Ballroom Days. The quality of the 30/31 date material is excellent, and its great to hear "motor City is Burning" with even more vengance. The alternate Rama Lama FaFaFa is excellent sounding but a little tamer compared to the KOTJ version. Those are easily the highlights along with I Belioeve to my Soul. The Ice Pick Slim and Mad Like Eldridge Cleaver suffer from poorer fidelity, although ae pretty listenable for those in a free-form mood. Black to Comm sounds pretty good on this one too.

Disk 5 is a Great soundboard(?) show from earlier 1968. Great set with a fuller version of how they actually sounded live. The quality takes a while to get used to, a little muddy, but the mix is pretty good. Great vocals throughout by Tyner. Come Together and Revolutionary Blues are an excellent combo. Also the Black to Comm is rock hard.

Disk 6 is a 4 song single form the reunion gig. It's ok, the DVD Sonic Revolution has all these songs on there already, so it's a little redundant. The band still has it, but their age does show.
But you can't go wrong with Lemmy singing Sister Anne.

Overall, this is a great Box Set after you fall in love with the bands 3 original albums. The shows and outtakes fill in the gaps on their masterful and flawed albums. The packaging and book are also pretty damn fine, with a full bio/history of the band complete with pictures and interviews. Very coool cardboard cases for everything too.

However, if you get this for around $50, make sure to pick up Thunder Express, which is a cd of an in-studio set from 1972, great sound on that one, especailly with the funk drum breakdown on RAma LAma. This is the only rarity not on the box set, but would have been great if they had swapped it for the reunion gig.

5 out of 5 stars Anything Less Than 5 Stars Is Blasphemy............2005-03-21

Longtime fans are familiar with these recordings which have appeared in various forms over the last 25 years plus. Yes, you're familiar with them, but you have never heard them sound so dang great. No doubt the highest generation masters were used on this set. For sound quality alone, this is a must have for any MC5 fan. Yes, some of the live recordings are good to very good bootleg quality at best; but they are quite listenable and do demand repeated listenings, unlike dreadful versions of these same recordings available elsewhere. I was hesitant to order this because of the price and lack of information on the sound quality. My advice to you...do not hesitate! You can get this box for a reasonable fee here on zShops as well as eBay. And this box contains the best sounding versions of these recordings to date. The only caveat of this 6 cd set is the last cd, the 100 Club show. Superbly recorded, but only containing 4 tracks. Kramer's guitar is like a sharpened razor & has not lost it's edge whatsoever. However, the 6th disc logs in at just over 20 minutes? Why the whole show was not included is beyond me. Let's hope the entire 100 Club show will be available soon.
Finally, If you're a newcomer the MC5, I strongly suggest entering "The Big Bang: The Best of the MC5" in your search box & begin your initiation to this great band there. The sonic quality of these recording may discourage you from investigating the MC5 legacy any further. When you do find "Big Bang" ain't enough for you, then this box is the logical next step (along with all the legitimate studio releases). So be part of the solution and buy this set NOW!

5 out of 5 stars How Sad That I'm The First.......2007-02-07

... review this collection of Syl's Greatest Non-Hits. This collection holds the best of Sylvain Mizrahi's solo efforts, and some testimonials to his work with his co-horts in the N.Y. Dolls. Included are some of the tunes he penned with David Johansen - "Trash," and "Frenchette." Others covering Johnny Thunders, like "Your Society Makes Me Sad." Others remember fallen comrades - "Sleep Baby Doll" and "Kids Are Back." Syl shouldn't be remembered as an asterisk, however. He was the glue that held the Dolls together - the muscular rhythmn guitar beneath Johnny's flights of fantasy. Listen close to "Jet Boy" or "Subway Train" and you'll hear who made the Dolls run. Listen to this collection to a true Rock & Roll heart - "14th Street", "Rockin' Good Time," "I Love a Little Pussy," "Cops Are Coming." Syl always had the inside track on old fashioned rock & roll tunesmithery - did then, does now. Buy this disc & then pick up the Dolls' latest "One Day It'll Please Us..."
