Although the 2 CD set Deadly Sting: The Mercury Years starts with the Scorpions' fifth studio album Lovedrive, it effectively traces and relives most of the German outfit's development from buzz band to rock stars. Beginning with their Billboard debut Lovedrive, which featured "Loving You Sunday Morning" and "Holiday" (contained here), the first disc follows the band through the platinum success of Blackout and the mind-blowing popularity of Love at First Sting. Included are the guitar-buzzing, pulse-pounding cuts "The Zoo," "No One Like You," "Rock You Like a Hurricane," and "Still Loving You." But with the second disc, Deadly Sting unabashedly captures a star-dazed band on the way down. Four cuts from the sappy, mediocre Savage Amusement are included, as well as numbers from the equally unimpressive Crazy World and the comeback-of-sorts Face the Heat. Although only the first CD is essential, it's the entire package that reveals the complete picture. --Jon Wiederhorn

4 out of 5 stars They Still Sting After All These Years.......2007-03-17

I was never a huge Scorpions fan when I was growing up. I was familiar with all of their radio releases, but not much else. When "Deadly Sting: The Mercury Years" was released, I decided that it would be worth the price to gather up the bulk of the Scorpions' most popular tunes. I actually bought this double disc set when it was originally released (well in the wake of the Grunge revolution that killed 80's hard rock and hair metal). The album is definitely worth your consideration if you enjoy hair and hard rock bands from the 80's/early 90's.

Most people will be able to recognize songs like "Wind of Change," the anthemic "Rock You Like A Hurricane," "No One Like You," and "Still Loving You." A few more, like myself, can recall songs like "The Zoo" and "Tease Me, Please Me." One really nice treat on this album is "I Can't Explain," from the "Make A Difference: Stairway To Heaven/Highway To Hell" album. It's the Scorpions' take on The Who's popular tune. Also included are gems like "Big City Nights" and "Loving You Sunday Morning."

As a whole, this is the perfect collection for casual fans like myself. I found quite a few songs on here that I was unaware of and really enjoyed them. I can't speak for the diehard fans, but I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to have a sizeable portion of Scorpions tunes without having to muddle through each and every album out there.

5 out of 5 stars this one has all your favorites.......2006-04-17

It has been really hard to find a cd that has ALL of the really great songs by The Scorpions. This is it. It will really rock you like a hurricane.

2 out of 5 stars Great Liner Notes, Packaging, Good Track Selection, Pity about the Sound Quality!.......2005-09-22

On the face of it, except that the Mercury years would exclude any Michael Schenker and/or Uli Roth contributions, this would probably be the best Scorpions compilation out there. The cd liner notes are excellent, the overall packaging is quite good and the track selections cover a very representative amount of their material to date.

Unfortunately, the recording isn't remastered or even mastered well for that matter. The volume levels are very low and the sound is very poor given what's out there today. I have unremastered discs that were released pre-1997 that sound a lot better than these discs do. I haven't yet heard the latest one disc offering, "Bad For Good" but given that it's released recently, perhaps the sound is mastered better over there and you're better off going for that one.

Maybe if they keep everything else and do a proper digital remastering of this, it would be worth the money. I regret getting this version for the very poor sound quality and if I could do it over, I'd probably chance it with "Bad For Good" and get truly well remastered versions of "Lovedrive" and "In Trance/Virgin Killer" and I'd have the best that the Scorpions have ever done.

And that's my recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars SCORPIONS at their very...Best!.......2005-08-21

This Double cd is an excellent and complete collection of all of the best songs by Metal band "The Scorpions".

CD1 includes 16 great Scorpions Classics such as...Holiday, The Zoo, Black-out, No-one like u, still loving you and Rock you like a Hurricane (Just to mention a few).

CD2 includes: Rhytm of love, believe in love, wind of change and many more (17 in total). I could still listen to this Mega group and remember the days when Heavy Metal ruled the music industry. Whatever happened to good all Heavy Metal by bands such as Scorpions, Ozzy, Mottley,AC/DC,Dio, etc?

This CD is a most have for any Heavy Metal music fan!
A complete compilation of one of the best bands ever...SCORPIONS!

5 out of 5 stars Scorpion's best Greatest Hits CD........2004-03-24

I actually got this CD for Christmas and this is a really good CD and I encourage that all of the Scorpions fans to buy this CD, whether you're a hardcore fan or a casual fan and beware that this CD costs about $27-$35 and if you're on a budget then I would recommend Bad For Good: The Best of the Scorpions which contains 18 songs while this CD contains 33 songs from the 1979-95 period and this is about all of the songs you need if you're a casual fan.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - their best retrospective to date.......2004-04-12

The Scorpions are the finest rock band to ever emerge from Germany, and easily one of the finest ones of all time. For many years they have been together, creating excellent rockers and ballads that you'd have to be a fool not to love. In the early-mid nineties, this dual-disc hits compilation was released. How does it measure up? Read on for my review of Deadly Sting - The Mercury Years.

PROS:
-If you're a casual fan of the Scorpions, but you want more than a single-disc hits compilation will give you, you've come to the right place. All the big hits are here - including Loving You Sunday Morning, The Zoo, Blackout, No One Like You, Big City Nights, Still Loving You, and many others.
-In addition, you get tons of underrated masterpieces. It's about time they put Don't Stop At The Top on a Scorpions hits compilation! Another underrated masterpiece is their cover of The Who's classic I Can't Explain.
-Unlike just about every other Scorpions hits compilation in existance, THIS ONE ORGANIZES THE TRACKS IN CHRONOLOGICAL RELEASE ORDER!
-In terms of the number of tracks this gives you, this is the band's finest compilation to date.

CONS:
-The biggest con with this compilation is the same one that most other Scorpions hits compilations have - it only covers the MERCURY YEARS. That means no tracks featuring Michael Schenker or Ulrich Jon Roth. Accordingly, Lonesome Crow, Fly To The Rainbow, In Trance, Virgin Killer, and Taken By Force get zero representation here.

-Two discs means a higher price.

OVERALL:
Despite some minor shortcomings, Deadly Sting stands as The Scorpions' best hits compilation to date. If you don't plan on buying anything else by the band, this will do great. However, if you're just seeking an introduction to the band and are considering making future purchases, get the single-disc Bad For Good compilation, since it's more affordable.

5 out of 5 stars reminder of greatnesxs.......2001-04-15

this two cd set contains the classic songs like "rock you like a hurricane" to "no one like you" and two previously unrealeased songs.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2000-08-31

If you like the more recent hits of the Scorpions like Rhythm of Love and Wind of Change, then this CD is worth the money. However, if you are buying this CD for the songs on disk 1, then I might suggest looking at World Wide Live. WWL has more energy and excitement. It feels like you are really at a Scorpions concert.

4 out of 5 stars GERMAN ROCKERS BEST.......1999-05-20

This is a very complete package filled with some of the best material ever recorded by this double guitar based band. These tunes remind us of a time when hair and drive-in kisses were the norm. Well worth the price!!!!
