How NOT to do a hits compilation.......2005-06-16
One of the most wrongly-ridiculed bands of the eighties was Twisted Sister. Due to the band's cross-dressing and long hair image, they were dubbed a glam metal band by many, despite the fact that this claim was far from the truth. While the band had the glam image, their music was much harder, heavier, and raw-edged than that of the actual glam bands - Dee Snider and the guys had a sound more similar to the likes of Motorhead than Poison. The band released five studio albums and assorted compilations over the years. Read on for my review of one of the band's hits compilations, The Essentials.
This compilation epitomizes beautifully why I DO NOT like hits compilations. You've got sixteen tracks and many of the band's big hits, including We're Not Gonna Take It, I Wanna Rock, Under The Blade, and You Can't Stop Rock And Roll. It also gives you some underrated songs as well as some previously unreleased live stuff. That's where the good points of this collection end. Of the sixteen songs, SIX are previously-unreleased live tracks. A hits compilation should always have a rare/new track or two as a bonus incentive for buying the package in question, BUT THIS IS OVERKILL! That space easily could have been filled with plenty of other Twisted Sister classics. And while we're on the subject, this set has some pretty startling omissions. No Burn In Hell? No Leader Of The Pack? No Stay Hungry? UNFORGIVABLE. The fact that the songs aren't in chronological order doesn't help things, either. I LOVE Twisted Sister. They are one of my favorite bands. The music here is five-star music, but the compilation itself fares considerably lower than that. The Stay Hungry album is a MUCH better introduction to the band than this mediocre hits package.
This compilation is the most readily available Twisted Sister compilation on the market, as well as the band's official one. It's a shame THIS is the most readily available one, because the harder to find Essentials and We're Not Gonna Take It And Other Hits (actually a BUDGET compilation) are better packages than this. Stay Hungry, the band's classic third album, is ALSO readily available, so why not buy it and get the proper introduction to the band?
And there you have it. Twisted Sister rules, but this compilation blows. You'll be doing yourself a huge favor if you opt to start with the Stay Hungry album, and later on get the other four classic eighties albums. The guys are long overdue for a career-spanning, chronologic dual-disc compilation. When will the record company ever give us one? Until then, steer clear of this package. Start with Stay Hungry instead.
