5 out of 5 stars A daring debut.......2006-08-03

In the mid seventies jazz-fusion was at it's peak and there was no shortage of quality records being released. For me, one of the fusion bands that stood out was Brand X. Their music was captivating, all band members were tremendous talents, but most importantly, they had an original sound. Thirty years after it's release, this debut disc still is amazing and would be a great introduction to this band. John Goodsall shreds with the best of them but his soothing guitar work is just as striking. The chirping tones that Percy Jones creates on his fretless bass are unmistakable. Robin Lumley enhances it all by playing the perfect keyboard riff at the right time, and Phil Collins, on a break from Genesis, laid down some exciting drumming, maybe some of the best he has ever done. Enjoy.

For those of us who thought Phil Collins was to be lost in the mass pop culture, think again... that was back in the early 80s when I heard this.. it is mastery distilled

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Debuet.......2005-06-30

This is one of the best albums by an obsured group, and hey Brand X never made a lousy album all terrific.I would call this on of the best fusion supergroups of all time but I don't know who Robin Lumley played for. The album starts with Nuclear Burn and when you hear that opening bass runs you know this group is going to be good. This song also shows Phil Collins shine on the drums who would aspect that. The acostic Waltz is more slow in tempo and the middle is good. The funk-filled Born Ugly is pure energy with a twisted rift, but it goes to this short of ambient state and builds with some nice Godsall guitar work. Smacks of Euthoria is alittle short but has got a rift that leaves on impression. The ticktock drums of Unorthodox Behavior features a building rift call back respone which is fun and goes into a groove. Running in Three is the most tightest track ecspecially at the end which just keeps and keeps starting up. Touch Wood is a great orient influence track with Goodsall running up and down the neckboard,Percy Jones also gives some good rifts on the double bass and uncreditied sax player also jions the fun. This album is great fun to listen and the album was probably fun to make for Brand X. Highly recommended for anyone of any music style.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Jazz/Rock Fusion...And Phil Collins Too.......2004-01-03

Brand X is the progressive jazz/rock fusion group that Phil Collins played drums for in the late 70's during his breaks from Genesis. Although there's no question about Phil's awesome drumming with Genesis, Brand X allowed Phil to *really* cut loose on the drumkit, free-form style. In fact, Phil felt that he had so much freedom playing with Brand X, that he momentarily considered leaving Genesis. As Phil himself put it, "Genesis was the wife, and Brand X was the mistress, and I just wanted to take my clothes off and live a bit!" However, Genesis started to loosen up musically around the late 70's, toning down their art-rock leanings and going more towards the rock mainstream, which ultimately convinced Phil to stay with the wife and say goodbye to the mistress. But Phil did record four studio albums (plus a live album) with Brand X between 1976 and 1980, and he also toured with the band in 1979 (though Brand X would carry on, off and on, through 1997). The group's first album, "Unorthodox Behaviour," is a stunning debut disc. Phil, guitarist John Goodsall, bassist Percy Jones, and keyboardist Robin Lumley have musical chemistry that's simply explosive. "Nuclear Burn" is just as barnburning as it's title suggests, "Euthanasia Waltz" is a sparkling laid-back jam, and "Born Ugly" is funky with a capital F. Also groovy are "Smacks Of Euphoric Hysteria" & "Running On Three," the title track is a steady, assured rocker, and the closing "Touch Wood" is a samba-flavored beauty. Goodsall delivers some fiery guitarwork, Jones is a monster on the bass, Lumley's keyboard-playing is superb, and, of course, what needs to be said about Phil's drumming---he's fantastic. I wish more people knew about Phil's work with this outstanding fusion band. Like I've always said, Phil Collins is first and foremost a *drummer*, and if Genesis and Phil's solo work can't convince his detractors of this, then his astonishing playing with Brand X most certainly can. Not only that, but Brand X---Goodsall, Jones, Lumley, and Collins---were simply an awesome band. "Unorthodox Behaviour" is a terrific debut album from one of music's best-kept-secret groups. Definitely start your Brand X collection with this one!

5 out of 5 stars Raw, Heavy, and Powerful.......2004-12-15

Dan Swano, despite his success with the Purgatory Afterglow and Crimson albums with Edge of Sanity, has said many times that his favourite EOS album has always been Unorthodox. I guess I can see why. First of all, those who call Edge of Sanity a melodic Death Metal band are wrong. EOS has never been merely a 'melodic' Death band to begin with; it's just that they stressed melody and the structure of their songs had powerful hooks that grab listeners by their balls. If you go back to the roots of this amazing band, you'll discover that their first three albums are the epitome of old school Death Metal with a proggressive approach.

Unorthodox is the 1992 release of EOS, but most of the songs were written between 1989 and 1991. The music presented on this record is very raw in style, crushingly heavy and incredibly powerful. All aspects of Death Metal are served here and they are also enhanced by proggy overtones (remember Dan Swano is one of the biggest progheads ever). Added to the mold of the songcraft are non-metal elements such as piano, keyboards, violin and even cello. Make no mistake though, none of these instruments are used to overpower, but they are utilised to add colour and texture as well as immense variety. As "Enigma" kicks off after the short instrumental track, we are faced with strangely accessible time signatures that continue to shift, change and redefine themselves. Right after Dan Swano's clean vocals (also the only clean vocals on the entire album) the intense rhythm work played by Sami Nerberg (and Dan Swano himself) abounds with so much energy that it is hard stay unresponsive to the magic that shines through. "Enigma" consists of three 'psalms', namely "The Blessing", "Celestial Dissension" and "The Loss of Hallowed Life". The cerebral lyrical theme is utilised in a call-and-response kind of vocal delivery and with each passing second the riff architecture is further developed. It finally explodes into a chaotic wall of sound. While I happen to like "Enigma" best on this record, the rest of songs are far from filler. On "In the Veins" and "Darker Than Black", Dan's vocals are particularly raw, but not as refined as they are on the later EOS albums. However these vocals seem to fit the music a lot better. Keep in mind that Dan Swano was only 18 when he recorded this album and his vocals are somewhat in the vein of the earliest Doom-Death bands: slow, tortured, yet heavily brutal!

"Everlasting" sees the band experimenting with various textures and the busy interplay during the main passage is stunning. The song structures are tremendously unorthodox (as the title itself suggests) and way ahead of their time. It's a shame this band got overlooked amongst the metal fans. I could name at least 50 Death Metal bands that came ten years after EOS and became a lot more popular. Similarly "After Afterlife" is a direct, speedy piece on the non-melodic spectrum of the genre. This sounds like a musical incarnation of entropic nihilism. The rhythm guitar pattern once again destroys (there are plenty of awesome RIFFS to be found here!) and pleases. The slow, seeping atmosphere is built upon wild drumming and throbbing bass figures as Nerberg and Swano experiment with delicate macrohythms to create a tapestry around the composition. Unorthodox is no doubt a different animal. This isn't as progressive as Crimson or as melodic as Purgatory Afterglow, but it's EOS's testament to creativity and originality from way back, the year 1992.

4 out of 5 stars a classic........2000-04-26

Unorthodox is a great death metal album of it's time. I recommend it to anyone who likes classic Swedish death metal (early entombed, etc.). See the beginnings of a musical genius, Dan Swano.

5 out of 5 stars Great Swedish death metal.......1999-09-07

Sure, this cd sounds a little like Entombed's Left Hand Path, but what band from Sweden doesn't sound like that? This cd blows away Dismember, Grave, Unleashed, and even Entombed. (maybe not Left Hand Path) Pure good wholesome brutality with a little harmony mixed in. This is even better than Wilson Phillips. I recommend this cd to any fans of Entombed, Yes, Anal Cunt, and The Spice Girls.

5 out of 5 stars Holy spaceballs batwoman.......2005-10-04

This record rips. I can listen to it over and over and over. I simply love the words and the music. The music is probably the best straight up chug chug hardcore around. Yes there are bands that do it with a more modern sound these days, but this stuff just levels everything Norma Jean ever tried to execute. The lyrics are really what do it for me though. I love the words on this record. Really heartfelt truths. I relate and feel the words on this record moreso than just about any record I own. It's one of THOSE records for me. Just simply amazing. All of their stuff is good so, definitely give this one a try.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best i own.......2004-10-19

Dorks, this CD absolutely rocks. I underestimated it at first because the production is kinda weak, but after listening to it a few times, this is one of the best hardcore CDs I've heard in a while. Every song has beatdown parts that make me cannonball my own wall.

      5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......2002-04-17

This CD blew me away. I'd known that Indecision was a good band for a long time and I enjoyed their more recent 7inch work, but Unorthodox is one of the best records of the 90s. The vocalist here, Tom, is actually better (I think) than Artie. This record is definitely one of the more unique and memorable hardcore offerings; no generic, flat songs here. Full of memorable lyrics. After you hear this, you'll only want to hear it again, and again, and so on. Best of all is 83 tracks featuring the band members and various people talking about anything and everything while on tour, laying around at home, etc. including a very interesting grind/death joke song towards the end. You WILL enjoy this.

Devil's Whorehouse was started by 2 ex Marduk members and 2 local musicians in January 2000. They started out as a MiSFiTS and Samhain cover band but after 2 rehersals they started to do their own material. Devils Whorehouse doesn`t claim to be the most original band but that isn`t the purpose of this band Death rock,Horror rock, call it what you like. Creating music for the dark at heart!!!

If You like Misfits Samhain or Danzig or any of their work this album is for you. Sounds closer to Danzig than the misfits but who cares.

      Long live the FiTS.

        Product Description

What I Like About Jew is the acclaimed NYC rock duo of Sean Altman and Rob Tannenbaum, who've been called "the Bart Simpsons of the Yeshiva" by Time Out New York and "the Simon & Garfunkel of ethnic gag songs" by the Boston Globe .

The duo was featured in a Time Out NY cover story on "The New Super Jews," and has been hailed in the New Yorker, the New York Times, The Onion and Philadelphia Weekly , which said: "Nothing compares to the bawdy borscht-belt comedy of Altman and Tannenbaum, who take Catskills seltzer-bottle humor to a dirty new low, with lyrics that make Lenny Bruce look like a choirboy."

Unfortunately the creators of Unorthodox have gone separate ways but continue to perform the songs from this funny and edgy CD. Sean Altman and Rob Tannenbaum are enormously talented and snarky. Those of us in middle age love this material although my family members in their final laps find this stuff a bit over the top and my adult kids find it a bit tame.

5 out of 5 stars what I like about what I like about jew.......2006-08-09

Having just had my Bar Mitzvah, I found this CD hilarious to listen to. My favorite song is "They tried to kill us we survived, lets eat". When we drove to camp this summer, my friends and I fought over who would get to be in the car with the CD... This is a great CD for any preteen or teenager, or anybody that likes to laugh.

5 out of 5 stars YAY keeps my mom HAPPY!.......2006-07-26

I bought this CD for my mom after she heard about it on the radio. She talked about it for weeks and weeks and hinted, well not really hinted more like DEMANDED, that I get her that cd NOW! so I finally got around to it and I get to hear about it EVERYDAY! Oh and if I ever go ANYWHERE in her car even just to the convenience store she HAS to crank up the volume all the way!!! and sing along to the AWESOME songs!!! they're sooo funny and having my mom karaoke along is the best! She JUST LOVES THIS CD! its the only one she listens to now. seriously. its getting worn out so fast it has started to SKIP! I'm gonna have to stock up on unorthodox cds and gear just to keep her happy. It is one of the most entertaining things to her. I even caught her sitting in her car just so she could listen to "What I like about Jew" I recommend that everyone buy several as gifts and for themselves and if their mom's anything like mine buy her 20 copies! oh and also the caps! the caps rock. My mom also wears her "what i like about jew" cap EVERYWHERE, EVERDAY!!!!!! seriously. :-D

5 out of 5 stars Stays with you.......2006-07-25

Loved this cd. Bought it for my 17 year old son. We are half and half, not religious in any way. The whole family loves listening to it. Brings smiles all around. Great for road trips.
So glad something like this is out there. Bring on some more!

5 out of 5 stars Hamish, yet on the edge.......2006-07-25

Great stuff -- I esepecially enjoyed "They Tried To Kill Us (We Survived, Let's Eat". But then I always enjoy music with a witty satirical subtext (hmmmm, subtext).

Obviously, the CD for the semidiotic (er, semiotic) analyst. Or perhaps not.
