Album Description
There is a wonderful new world of sounds for dogs to discover - classical music blended with nature sounds - a calming combination that will soothe and delight dogs and their owners. The Mozart CD will entertain and relax dogs while they are at home and reduce their separation anxiety and hyperactivity while their owners are away. We've carefully designed our products to improve a dog's quality of life - and their owner's life as well.Did you know that classical music has healing benefits not only for adults, but for dogs as well? A 2002 study published in the journal Animal Welfare detailed the reactions of dogs to different types of music. The results were clear. Dogs overwhelmingly spend more time in a relaxed state when exposed to classical music: they rest more, bark less, and are calmer when people come to visit.
There are also sounds in nature - babbling brooks, ocean waves, rainfall, songbirds and tranquil night sounds - that naturally soothe dogs. Our CDs skillfully blend these soothing sounds with superb classical compositions. The result? Dogs get the maximum healing benefit when their owners play one of our CDs.

Intense and Grandiose.......2006-04-09
Doing sections from "The White Album" is somewhat novel in itself but these versions have bite. It seems that everybody's done "Yesterday", "In My Life" or "Norwegian Wood" but, how many have done "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey?" Every instrument is thrown into the mix: guitar, strings, piano, bass, drums and even a Moog.
This is a must have for Jazz and Beatles lovers.

A classic on vinyl is a classic on CD.......2003-04-01
It was an interesting Beatles choice to begin with -- so many artists had covered the Beatles early/mid-career stuff that seemed tailor made for 'easy listening' orchestrations (think: Yesterday, Michelle, Something). I was astounded then to hear the White Album covered. The interpretations here were absolutely unique and not just replicas of the originals. Everything seems to work. The key here is in the arrangements -- and Beatles music lends itself so well to exploring new arenas.
I'm sure it wasn't an easy choice deciding which tracks to cover (others come to mind) but the results are nothing less than exceptional. Ramsey Lewis takes each song and keeps a running thread that's instantly recognizable and puts his own spin on it.
I won't go into detail on each track, they really are all worthy. Though my only quibble are with 'Goodnight' and 'Julia' -- pleasant tracks which could or should have been replaced with more upbeat numbers. I could think of any number of songs... Savoy Truffle, Revolution, Happiness Is a Warm Gun and Birthday -- each would have been amazing in Ramsey Lewis's hands.
Concerning the CD itself, the sound is truly astounding. My vinyl copy was in excellent condition but was played on a very basic player but the CD was like hearing something totally new. I've no idea what a '24-bit remastered version' really is, as opposed to any other remastering but it sounded incredible on my 10-year old machine through top-notch headphones. Great clarity and detail. Rich, full sound.
The foldout booklet, of course, is in Japanese and may have had some interesting liner notes but that's a minor issue. The one thing that did concern me was track 2, 'Rocky Racoon' -- it sounds as though it's been faded out too early. I'm sure it couldn't have been for time restraints so will have to check back with the vinyl version to see if I'm wrong!
Four of these tracks (Mother Nature's Son, Julia, Good Night, Dear Prudence) appear on the Ramsey Lewis CD, Maiden Voyage but completists will probably go the extra mile for this. All in all, a truly welcome and long-overdue release for a wonderful album. Congrats to MCA for this. Nice classy packaging.
As a final note, there is another version of Everybodys Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey by Fats Domino -- who I didn't even realize was still recording in '68. It was available on one of those old Warner Bros. double compilations highlighting their artists -- another great interpretation of an unlikely choice.

Though American, Barbara Bonney has spent most of her career in Europe and, up until recently, never saw the need to sing in English. But this collection is entirely in English, featuring the title piece written for her by Previn--sort of a tone poem for voice, nice but not great--plus Samuel Barber's more familiar Hermit Songs, Dominick Argento's Six Elizabethan Songs and Aaron Copland's Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson. It's one of her best recordings and a big step in the gradual evolution of an artist who began as another pretty-voiced soprano and is becoming one of the most memorable recitalists of her generation. --David Patrick StearnsCustomer Reviews:
A soprano must!.......2007-01-08
Excellent album, with some minor quibbles.......2005-08-13
Bonney does a beautiful job with all the sets presented here, and Previn delivers a perfectly complimentary accompaniment to Bonney's soaring tone.
One thing I found interesting about Bonney was her frequent use of straight tone. I can't verify if she's chosen to do so for interpretive reasons, but there are occasions in all the sets (esp. the Barber and Argento) where I find that it sticks out. In general, her tone is always beautiful, and the lack of vibrancy doesn't affect the pitch or flow of the line. It's a very minor issue, but I feel compelled to mention it for those who may not be expecting this stylistic detail.
At any rate, the repertoire is amazing, and I think this disc is almost essential as the Rubinstein disc I reviewed elsewhere on Amazon. I'm not letting my issue with Bonney's vibrancy take away from the 5-star rating. :)

A Spectrum of Romance in American Musical Composition.......2006-01-15
Here are songs well known and not so well known by familiar and not so familiar composers, and in the hands of tenor Robert White and pianist Samuel Sanders they all come across as important. Included are rarities by composers such as Amy Beach, Theodor Chanler, Isabelle Firestone, Eric Ewazen, Albert Hay Malotte, Marc Marder, John Musto and Richard Hageman, with popular composers Rudolf Friml and Sigmund Romberg, along with the greats: Ives, Schuman, Hindemith, Barber, Thomson, Korngold, Copland. Rorem, Bolcom, Corigliano, and Griffes. It is a huge spectrum of work and while some are less successful than other, they all are given respectful and loving renditions by White and Sanders. It is great fun to hear Firestone's famous 'If I could tell you' that opened the Voice of Firestone for so many years along side Samuel Barber's gorgeous 'Sure on this shining night' and Aaron Copland's settings of Emily Dickinson's poems.
This a rare treat for connoisseurs of lieder and for lovers of beautiful songs. Recommended. Grady Harp, January 06
a rare gem of a CD.......2002-07-08
There is a universality to the longing involved in Romanticism. These songs capture this feeling perfectly. From the first song to the last, these songs do one thing perfectly: evoke an emotional response.
This is due in no short measure to the wonderful performance Robert White gives. Rather than being merely technically accurate, White actually gives each of these songs a life of their own. He achieves this effect by getting inside not only the words, but the feelings involved.
Some of the highlights for me are: the lovely and memorable "Rose Marie," Ewazen's setting of Blake's "The Tiger," a moving version of "The Lord's Prayer" and the haunting "Never More Will the Wind."
Samuel Sanders is a worthy musical companion to White. His playing is reciprocally lovely and introspective. The notes are extensive and informative as well.
Even though it may be an acquired taste in our postmodern age, I give Sure On This Shining Night my full recommendation.

vocalist tom powers is a dead ringer for later day liam gallagher
the first song youl swear is an oasis song the next adds variety and the third song
im so lonely is an istantly adictable peice of pop with mellow acoustics and a zeplinesque guitar solo
on the whole the first half of the album sounds amazeing though the second half does disapoint as the band move more toward pink floyd style grand opera but just dont have the style to pull it off
however the first 3 songs alone are worth the paying price absoloutley a must have if you like bands like oasis
if you liked oasis last 2 albums youl love this one it fits in nicely with those two
and amazeingly was released several years before them

The Works of Two American Giants.......2006-01-16
And the communication could be in few finer hands than those of Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the London Symphony Orchestra and of Barbara Hendricks, whose voice in the song cycles was at its prime in 1995 when the recording was made. The recital opens with Copland's 'Quiet City' in as moody and atmospheric performance as any on record. Tilson Thomas does not rush this work but allows it to breathe. The first chair solo work by Trumpet Maurice Murphy and English Horn Christine Pendrill are particularly fine. Following a period of grateful silence thanks to the engineers, the next 'set' is Copland's setting of 'Eight Poems by Emily Dickinson'. Hendricks' voice is rich and pliant and the moods of the poems come across well. She often sacrifices enunciation for open vowel production, but it matters little: the poems are lovely.
Samuel Barber's often performed and used 'Adagio for Strings' follows in an oddly restrained reading by Tilson Thomas. The angst is still present but the spectacular power of the final ascending climax doesn't tear at the heart. But in many ways this straightforward reading makes the familiar piece more clearly a classic than an emotional button. Hendricks then collaborates with two of Barber's 'Four Songs', and her 'Sure on this shining night' is so focused and delicate that she surpasses most of her fellow colleague's versions. Likewise the final masterful 'Knoxville: Summer of 1915' is lyrical and finds all aspects of Agee's poetic story equally important. Tilson Thomas' support is some of the finest on this record.
Recommendation: look for this recording and buy when you find it. It is a treasure trove that desperately deserves re-mastering. Grady Harp, January 06
