Album Description

There is a wonderful new world of sounds for dogs to discover - classical music blended with nature sounds - a calming combination that will soothe and delight dogs and their owners. The Mozart CD will entertain and relax dogs while they are at home and reduce their separation anxiety and hyperactivity while their owners are away. We've carefully designed our products to improve a dog's quality of life - and their owner's life as well.

Did you know that classical music has healing benefits not only for adults, but for dogs as well? A 2002 study published in the journal Animal Welfare detailed the reactions of dogs to different types of music. The results were clear. Dogs overwhelmingly spend more time in a relaxed state when exposed to classical music: they rest more, bark less, and are calmer when people come to visit.

There are also sounds in nature - babbling brooks, ocean waves, rainfall, songbirds and tranquil night sounds - that naturally soothe dogs. Our CDs skillfully blend these soothing sounds with superb classical compositions. The result? Dogs get the maximum healing benefit when their owners play one of our CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Great for babies too!.......2006-06-24

We listened to Dog Gone Classical Music the other day with our 11 month-old baby and he just loved it. The nature sounds were so soothing that he almost fell asleep. The bird calls and running water are particularly relaxing; I think most babies - and adults, too! - would love this CD, along with dogs, of course. And we all know that classical music is good for babies' brains. Recommended, even if you don't have a dog!

5 out of 5 stars DOG GONE IT.... Love it!.......2006-06-09

And so does my dog! Not only is the music calming for my dog, but the nature sounds bring the great outdoors - inside - for my dog to enjoy. It's a winner!

5 out of 5 stars A Turning Point.......2006-07-27

This album was responsible for turning me into jazz music. By 1968 I was a teenager and I used only to listen to Rock and Roll music, specially Beatles albums. The first time I listened to the vinyl record, I knew that a new world was opening to me. The Ramsey Lewis jazz arrangements with his typical swinging are extremely captivating. I hope it will become available for purchase again.

5 out of 5 stars Intense and Grandiose.......2006-04-09

I have over 2200 Beatles covers so far and none match the intensity and grandiose arrangements of Ramsey Lewis' Mother Nature's Son. Ramsey Lewis really understood the Beatles music and was able to successfully translate to a jazz setting without losing the original songs' lyricism.

Doing sections from "The White Album" is somewhat novel in itself but these versions have bite. It seems that everybody's done "Yesterday", "In My Life" or "Norwegian Wood" but, how many have done "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey?" Every instrument is thrown into the mix: guitar, strings, piano, bass, drums and even a Moog.

This is a must have for Jazz and Beatles lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2005-05-27

Ramsey Lewis is an American Jazz treasure!. I have been searching for this album for years. It is a "must have" for any collector of Jazz. I could never understand why it was not put on CD and released in the USA.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!.......2004-03-20

Ramsey Lewis' 'Mother Nature's Son' is one of the most important albums of all times. Pianist and arranger Ramsey Lewis plays exclusively themes from the Beatles' 'White Album', and does is magnifically. The orchestral arrangements and conduction by Charles Stepney are incredibly creative. It was recorded in 1968, but will be at least a forever and remarkable work-of-art.

5 out of 5 stars A classic on vinyl is a classic on CD.......2003-04-01

As a collector of vinyl and ardent Beatles fan, I was always on the lookout for interesting cover versions and then I found this one. I was a fan of Ramsey Lewis too but this album came as a surprise.

It was an interesting Beatles choice to begin with -- so many artists had covered the Beatles early/mid-career stuff that seemed tailor made for 'easy listening' orchestrations (think: Yesterday, Michelle, Something). I was astounded then to hear the White Album covered. The interpretations here were absolutely unique and not just replicas of the originals. Everything seems to work. The key here is in the arrangements -- and Beatles music lends itself so well to exploring new arenas.

I'm sure it wasn't an easy choice deciding which tracks to cover (others come to mind) but the results are nothing less than exceptional. Ramsey Lewis takes each song and keeps a running thread that's instantly recognizable and puts his own spin on it.

I won't go into detail on each track, they really are all worthy. Though my only quibble are with 'Goodnight' and 'Julia' -- pleasant tracks which could or should have been replaced with more upbeat numbers. I could think of any number of songs... Savoy Truffle, Revolution, Happiness Is a Warm Gun and Birthday -- each would have been amazing in Ramsey Lewis's hands.

Concerning the CD itself, the sound is truly astounding. My vinyl copy was in excellent condition but was played on a very basic player but the CD was like hearing something totally new. I've no idea what a '24-bit remastered version' really is, as opposed to any other remastering but it sounded incredible on my 10-year old machine through top-notch headphones. Great clarity and detail. Rich, full sound.

The foldout booklet, of course, is in Japanese and may have had some interesting liner notes but that's a minor issue. The one thing that did concern me was track 2, 'Rocky Racoon' -- it sounds as though it's been faded out too early. I'm sure it couldn't have been for time restraints so will have to check back with the vinyl version to see if I'm wrong!

Four of these tracks (Mother Nature's Son, Julia, Good Night, Dear Prudence) appear on the Ramsey Lewis CD, Maiden Voyage but completists will probably go the extra mile for this. All in all, a truly welcome and long-overdue release for a wonderful album. Congrats to MCA for this. Nice classy packaging.

As a final note, there is another version of Everybodys Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey by Fats Domino -- who I didn't even realize was still recording in '68. It was available on one of those old Warner Bros. double compilations highlighting their artists -- another great interpretation of an unlikely choice.

Though American, Barbara Bonney has spent most of her career in Europe and, up until recently, never saw the need to sing in English. But this collection is entirely in English, featuring the title piece written for her by Previn--sort of a tone poem for voice, nice but not great--plus Samuel Barber's more familiar Hermit Songs, Dominick Argento's Six Elizabethan Songs and Aaron Copland's Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson. It's one of her best recordings and a big step in the gradual evolution of an artist who began as another pretty-voiced soprano and is becoming one of the most memorable recitalists of her generation. --David Patrick Stearns

This collection of songs is very helpful for sopranos--all of you will need to know these pieces at some point!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent album, with some minor quibbles.......2005-08-13

One of my first experiences as an accompanist was to play the Argento Elizabethan songs, and ever since I've had a special affinity for them. That alone was my reason for purchasing this particular disc, and the fact that the Barber Hermit Songs were here was a major bonus!

Bonney does a beautiful job with all the sets presented here, and Previn delivers a perfectly complimentary accompaniment to Bonney's soaring tone.

One thing I found interesting about Bonney was her frequent use of straight tone. I can't verify if she's chosen to do so for interpretive reasons, but there are occasions in all the sets (esp. the Barber and Argento) where I find that it sticks out. In general, her tone is always beautiful, and the lack of vibrancy doesn't affect the pitch or flow of the line. It's a very minor issue, but I feel compelled to mention it for those who may not be expecting this stylistic detail.

At any rate, the repertoire is amazing, and I think this disc is almost essential as the Rubinstein disc I reviewed elsewhere on Amazon. I'm not letting my issue with Bonney's vibrancy take away from the 5-star rating. :)

4 out of 5 stars I like it!.......2002-03-04

I bought this cd a while ago. The reason I bought it is because Barbara Bonney is my favourite artist. I think she sings beautifully in this cd. But for the repetoire, I think it's a litte bit too contemparory for me and I am not really into that. Still, I think she did an excellent job in this recording! It's really worth buying!

5 out of 5 stars International, and yet local.......2001-02-20

Mrs. Bonney, born in America but with several years in Europe is able to give us the best of the two worlds.

The CD is a masterpiece of fantastic singing and with heart and the freedom that Mr. Previn adds to his piano playing.

I bought the CD based in the recommendation of the Gramophone magazine, and again they are right.

Previos review gives a good overall picture of the performance

Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Bonney Changes Course.......1999-09-13

This recording marks a new high for Bonney. While her silvery tone and lyricism have always been more than suffcient to captivate her listeners, Bonney takes risks on this disc like never before. She has a maturity and depth to her sound that makes one realize that her older recordings were more shallow in retrospect. Not only is she willing to step out of the box so many sopranos fall into: of wanting to sound "pretty" all the time; she is aggressive and surprisingly edgy in her interpretations of the Barber set, shockingly frank in the Argento, and convincingly ominous in the closing Previn vocalise. With this disc, Bonney has truly established herself as a force in vocal music, and as the definitive American singer today.

5 out of 5 stars A Spectrum of Romance in American Musical Composition.......2006-01-15

Often American music is thought to be jaunty, combative, or tragic in content, especially when it comes to songs/lieder for the classical repertoire. This engaging CD takes umbrage with that misconception and in presenting some twenty-eight songs by various composers clearly identifies the romantic side of American composers.

Here are songs well known and not so well known by familiar and not so familiar composers, and in the hands of tenor Robert White and pianist Samuel Sanders they all come across as important. Included are rarities by composers such as Amy Beach, Theodor Chanler, Isabelle Firestone, Eric Ewazen, Albert Hay Malotte, Marc Marder, John Musto and Richard Hageman, with popular composers Rudolf Friml and Sigmund Romberg, along with the greats: Ives, Schuman, Hindemith, Barber, Thomson, Korngold, Copland. Rorem, Bolcom, Corigliano, and Griffes. It is a huge spectrum of work and while some are less successful than other, they all are given respectful and loving renditions by White and Sanders. It is great fun to hear Firestone's famous 'If I could tell you' that opened the Voice of Firestone for so many years along side Samuel Barber's gorgeous 'Sure on this shining night' and Aaron Copland's settings of Emily Dickinson's poems.

This a rare treat for connoisseurs of lieder and for lovers of beautiful songs. Recommended. Grady Harp, January 06

    3 out of 5 stars a rare gem of a CD.......2002-07-08

Sure On This Shining Night is not my usual musical cup of tea...yet, it has become one of my favorite CDs. This collection of American Romantic songs has burrowed its way into my heart.

There is a universality to the longing involved in Romanticism. These songs capture this feeling perfectly. From the first song to the last, these songs do one thing perfectly: evoke an emotional response.

This is due in no short measure to the wonderful performance Robert White gives. Rather than being merely technically accurate, White actually gives each of these songs a life of their own. He achieves this effect by getting inside not only the words, but the feelings involved.

Some of the highlights for me are: the lovely and memorable "Rose Marie," Ewazen's setting of Blake's "The Tiger," a moving version of "The Lord's Prayer" and the haunting "Never More Will the Wind."

Samuel Sanders is a worthy musical companion to White. His playing is reciprocally lovely and introspective. The notes are extensive and informative as well.

Even though it may be an acquired taste in our postmodern age, I give Sure On This Shining Night my full recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Jon Lucien takes his time with this lush, romantic CD.......1999-03-17

Lucien's voice has never been better, and whether singing an original (Title Track)or a standard ("But Beautiful"), he takes the high road, making romance seem noble, rather than sappy or selfish. He sings with a graciousness that give his songs strength, and his rich baritone voice is endlessly easy on the ears. His tribute to Oprah Winfrey on "How About You" is playful and sweet, and if you don't lose at least one tear when listening to "But Beautiful", then you need help in the romance department.

Jon Lucien's voice is so rich, so resonant, he could bring tears to your eyes singing the phone book. This album is like a "best of" compilation, each song will be your favorite, until you hear the next. Not one track is wasted.

If you like lush, sensous jazz vocals, you must give this disk a listen. You will become addicted as did I.

    5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2006-11-11

I got this for my grand daughter and decided to open it un and listen it to it before I sent it to her. I loved it so much that I kept this copy for myself and bought another one for her. I also bought one to give as a baby shower gift! The songs and music on these CD's are just so nice! I find them VERY relaxing and peaceful. I think this should be a must for every baby. My grand daughter loves it. It immediately calms down a fussy baby. You can't put a price on that!

5 out of 5 stars Calming and Soothing for your little love.......2005-05-19

I love this CD collection. My son loves to cuddle and listen to soothing and dulcet tones of the author reading the story. By the second track he is getting drowsy and by 5th one, the eyes are closed. It's the only CD that keeps him entertained till he falls asleep in the crib. The other CD's are great at stopping cranky moods. I don't know what it is about this collection but it's just made for little ears!

    4 out of 5 stars A Different Cast.......2006-04-03

Cast's 1st effot, "All Change" has a number of singles on it, including "Alright" which was a radio darling, and even got play in the United States, which says something. Mother Nature Calls, though not offering a charting single, is a great listen, and a necessary purchase if you like britpop or rock/pop. The reviewer who related this album to Oasis' "Heathen Chemistry" is right on track. Great mix of ringing electric guitars and smooth acoustic melodies.

Note: Lead singer is John Power, not Tom.

4 out of 5 stars cast if you like oasis.......2004-10-07

this album is a great peice of rock n roll and sounds verry much like their fellow brit rockers oasis do on the albums standing on the shoulders of giants and heathen chemistry though was released 7 years ago

vocalist tom powers is a dead ringer for later day liam gallagher

the first song youl swear is an oasis song the next adds variety and the third song

im so lonely is an istantly adictable peice of pop with mellow acoustics and a zeplinesque guitar solo

on the whole the first half of the album sounds amazeing though the second half does disapoint as the band move more toward pink floyd style grand opera but just dont have the style to pull it off

however the first 3 songs alone are worth the paying price absoloutley a must have if you like bands like oasis

if you liked oasis last 2 albums youl love this one it fits in nicely with those two

and amazeingly was released several years before them

    amazeing

    5 out of 5 stars amazing.......1999-02-06

5 out of 5 stars "CAST" Our only hope of reaching Beatles excellence........1998-12-18

This album proclaims yet more excellent put forth via John Powers and is another mile stone for his new British pop band "CAST". He has advanced yet another level in his amazing pop writing abilities. John, good work, and don't mind being in the mainstream of all our American garbashi at this time, keep your eyes on your music, continue to write the best material that you can, and the American media will have no choice, but to let this cat out of the bag....again. What I'm trying to say is that CAST is all we have left in this world that has any possible chance of reaching the level of excellence in pop music that their forfather the did "The BEATLES". No other group besides HERMANS HERMITS has even come close. Yes, even OASIS is far from the scope of BEATLES quality, they always blow it with thier ending - Laim Liam, and they only sing paralell harmonies. So please John, keep those hits rollin, don't look back, and remember that you are truely loved by Americans who know what true excellence is. Your very good friend, and one of your many number one fans. John Duggan Jamestown, RI The United States

5 out of 5 stars The Works of Two American Giants.......2006-01-16

This very fine recording is one that has strangely disappeared from the available list of CDs and for those fortunate to find it will wonder, as I do, why it is no longer in ready circulation. The recital honors the parallel lives of Aaron Copland (1900 - 1990) and Samuel Barber (1910 - 1981) and with the selections included demonstrates that despite their stylistic differences, each of these composers cared deeply about communication.

And the communication could be in few finer hands than those of Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the London Symphony Orchestra and of Barbara Hendricks, whose voice in the song cycles was at its prime in 1995 when the recording was made. The recital opens with Copland's 'Quiet City' in as moody and atmospheric performance as any on record. Tilson Thomas does not rush this work but allows it to breathe. The first chair solo work by Trumpet Maurice Murphy and English Horn Christine Pendrill are particularly fine. Following a period of grateful silence thanks to the engineers, the next 'set' is Copland's setting of 'Eight Poems by Emily Dickinson'. Hendricks' voice is rich and pliant and the moods of the poems come across well. She often sacrifices enunciation for open vowel production, but it matters little: the poems are lovely.

Samuel Barber's often performed and used 'Adagio for Strings' follows in an oddly restrained reading by Tilson Thomas. The angst is still present but the spectacular power of the final ascending climax doesn't tear at the heart. But in many ways this straightforward reading makes the familiar piece more clearly a classic than an emotional button. Hendricks then collaborates with two of Barber's 'Four Songs', and her 'Sure on this shining night' is so focused and delicate that she surpasses most of her fellow colleague's versions. Likewise the final masterful 'Knoxville: Summer of 1915' is lyrical and finds all aspects of Agee's poetic story equally important. Tilson Thomas' support is some of the finest on this record.

Recommendation: look for this recording and buy when you find it. It is a treasure trove that desperately deserves re-mastering. Grady Harp, January 06

    5 out of 5 stars A Sleeper.......2003-09-26

This CD offers a creative approach in programming: a major orchestral and vocal work by each of two American major composers - Copland and Barber. While they were contemporaries whose music was deemed accessible, they were vastly different: Copland virtually invented an American sound, while Barber's was firmly rooted in European tradition. So this is an album of contrast and diversity. What is consistent is the excellence of the interpretaion and performance. While the orchestral works are very satisfying (but who can compete with Schippers 'Adagio'?), the real distinction is in the vocal contributions of Barbara Hendricks. The Dickenson poems are full of vitality as they should be. The Barber 'Nocturne'is particularly haunting. But the masterpiece is the 'Knoxville'; Leontyne Price is considered to 'own' this piece, and there are other hightly regarded performances, but this one gives them real competition. Much depends on voice preferences, but I don't think you can go wrong with this CD and I recommend it highly.
