5 out of 5 stars magic.......2007-06-21

the only songs u dont want to listen to is sky pup and the final 2 songs
everything is awesome. you can tell from this album how much kurt cobain and nirvana took from the melvins.

5 out of 5 stars a landmark album in the Melvins' twisted discography.......2006-05-18

this is the Melvins' major label debut. back in the early 90's, the big grunge boom of the northwest was going on, and major record labels were busy signing bands left & right that sounded even remotely similiar to Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden. when Atlantic signed the Melvins, they didn't know what they were getting into. I don't think they were meant to be a big multi-million dollar phenomenon. nevertheless, Houdini was a kick-ass, weird, demented, rock album and is probably the best of their career (next to their self-titled album). in my opinion, this is probably one of the best rock albums that came out that year. when I think of my favorite albums of '93 I think of: Tool - Undertow, Tad - Inhaler, and Melvins - Houdini.

5 out of 5 stars "a fantastic release".......2006-04-27

i am not new to the melvins by any means, but this is only the third album that i have purchased by them. and i deffinatly have to say that "houdini" is my favorite out of the three that i own.
i was expecting alot more then what i got.. when i purchased "stonerwitch" even though it was a great album i think it is far from their best, next i bought "gluey porch treatments" which was awsome, but the other day when i got "houdini" i couldnt quit smiling it was exactly the type of melvins album that i had been searching for. it is full of heavy dirge groove riffs in songs such as "hooch" and "nightgoat" but then it also has heavy fast insane hook songs like "honeybucket"
so in my opinion this is the melvins best album....

5 out of 5 stars Primo Melvins.......2006-04-17

Wow. All I can truly say is that this album is something to behold. Melvins purists may knock it slightly due to it being a major label album (their first), but hands down, this is their tightest and most face-eating accomplishment. If Boris, Zodiac and Your Blessened were on this album, it would be the greatest album of all time - and in fact there would be no more need to make music. Ever again.

The entire album rocks steadily. (Ironically, the worst track on the album is Sky Pup, in which Kurt Cobain lends his crappy guitar talent).

Standout tracks and my personal favourites are: Lizzy, Going Blind, Honey Bucket and best of all Joan Of Arc. If I were a boxer or ultimate fighter, Joan Of Arc would be my entrance music. In fact, this song is so [...], that I'd by default be ahead of my opponent on the judge's scorecards.

If you like head-nodding, sludgey riffage at its finest then you must own this. An album no Melvins fan, or metal fan should be without.

Hail to the Melvins.

2 out of 5 stars Begining of the end - I was wrong - 5 stars!!.......2006-03-14

Like my title suggests, this album,I believe was the begining of the end for such a great, revolutionary metal group.Melvins practically invented a whole genre of metal - sludge metal, with many bands in this genre tipping their hats to them.Don't get me wrong - this album is not bad.But by early Melvin standards,Houdini is downright dissapointing. Those expecting the insane heaviness of the Ozma,Gluey Porch,Bullhead,ect.. period will have to look elsewhere. It's weird, some songs seem like holdovers from Bullhead(Nightgoat,Hag Me - one of their greatest, hardest songs) and other songs make no sense whatsoever (Sky Pup,Spread Eagle). You could sense the begining of the experimentation that they can't seem to stop now.I'm all for experimenting, some people feel they can't do the same thing all the time - but in the Melvin's case,if it ain't broke don't fix it.It's like they abandoned a genre they created.I've heard some of their later offerings, and let me tell you, don't bother-it's all pedestrian now.I hope Buzz is reading this - get back to your roots and make the sound that makes you feel like you are drowing in tar,slowly.PLEASE!(Update)5/4/06 - Okay, I admit I was a bit harsh in my previous review and I apologize. After more listens I now really appreciate this album.Yeah,it may not be as hard as previous offerings and yeah,it was their first major label release, but let me tell you this album is great. This album was better than most of the other music released during it's time,s*&t,its better than most of the music released now.I don't really know how to describe it-this is a crazy, loud, insane listen. And yes, there are other excellent songs apart from Nightgoat and Hag Me.Include the phsycotic opening track Hooch, the insane tranquility of Lizzy, the war cry Joan of Arc and ect.And one of the best tracks is Going Blind, a Kiss cover. The Melvins have actually done what I thought was impossible with me - because of this cover I actually got put on to some Kiss.Unbelievable!(The Melvins did an awesome cover God of Thunder also - you can find it on the internet.)Anyway,I give it 5 stars now in the present time.I still can't get into Sky Pup and it still is not as good as their previous albums, but the strength of the songs puts it to a 5.So disregard my old review, and Buzz,I'm sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Wahoo for Mr. Buzz.......2007-04-04

This album, OH MAN THIS ALBUM!!!

I bought this CD because it had two of my favorite songs on it (i.e. "Sweet Willie Rollbar" and "Revolve")

it is a good CD, don't get me wrong, but there are like two tracks with no music on it (like the last track) which kind of pistons me off when a band will do that, put ambient noise on an album and title it as if it were a song!

4 out of 5 stars A good dose of lunatic rock intermixed with ambient music from Hell.......2006-11-23

On the excellent "Stoner Witch" the Melvins churn through song after song with a dense primordial energy--think neutron star emissions--buffered with excursions into the darker recesses of imagination. The band is not content to lock in to one particular vibe and often zags when you thing they are about to zig.

It took some guts to concoct this work, and it will take some fortitude to listen intently and loudly. Expect to do so alone if friends, like many of mine, cannot range far from the safe and sure when it comes to music. There's none of that to be found here.

If you enjoy a good dose of lunatic rock, that is distorted guitars, sludge drenched bass, and map cap percussion, intermixed with ambient music from Hell, then Stone Witch awaits.

4 out of 5 stars Hail the King (Buzzo), baby. .......2006-10-09

Pacific Northwest rock shamans the Melvins are among the innovators of '80s and '90s "grunge," though they easily defied this simple categorization with every release. For every churning bucket 'o' sludge like Bullhead they released some off-the-wall album of ambient noodling like Ambient Noise Takeover or Honky. Stoner Witch, one part of the trio released during the Atlantic era (the other two are Houdini and Stag), combines both sides of the Melvins' sound into a surprisingly coherent whole while adding a small dose of commercial hard rock sensibility for good measure.

However, don't be mislead into thinking this is some pallid sellout effort, 'cause it's anything but. If anything, the fact that this band ever got signed to a major is a mystery to me (and I mean that in a positive way, of course).

The first four songs kick Stoner Witch off with a bang, with one-minute opener Skweetis (I wish it were longer--Dale Crover's legendary drumming kicks arse on this one), insidiously catchy stomper Queen, balls-to-the-wall speed of Sweet Willy Rollbar, and the excellent Revolve, a minor hit which stands as one of the most accessible and catchy entries in their catalog. King Buzzo's gruff howl and guitar playing is in fine form here.

Then it starts getting weird. You've got nice chilled slow burns like Goose Freight Train and the dreamy 6-minute Shevil; a dark evil dirge titled At The Stake that would've fit right in on their earlier albums; and Roadbull and Magic Pig Detective, which screw with expectations in some entertaining ways--the former starts like one of the earlier, more accessible tracks before turning into a marching tune complete with whistling, and the latter starts with a wall of noise then suddenly drops in a bit of rock to make it go down easy.

The best two songs, however, are saved for last. June Bug is a great little instrumental with excellent dynamics and melody that cries for a longer run time. The album closes with Lividity, a 9-minute creeping ambient drone that somehow manages to be driven mostly by a handful of REALLY HEAVY bass notes and sporadic Dale hits seemingly placed just right to make you jump. Fans of Earth, Sunn0)))) and the like (all Melvins-influenced, natch) will love this one.

All in all, Stoner Witch is one of the most interesting and varied "major label" albums ever. If you're going to start with any Melvins record, make it this one. Chase that with a round of Houdini then the sonic extremity of Bullhead and Ozma/Gluey Porch Treatments. If you're not singing the Buzzo's praises by then consider yourself lame.

5 out of 5 stars livinliveinitlovinit.......2006-10-06

lets get one thing straight: Melvins are one of the greatest hard rock bands in metal/punk/alt. history, hands down. they're not only one of the heaviest, they're also one of the loudest and most expressive, and most experimental, never becoming predictable or boring. with each album the band takes one step beyond what you'd expect, but is always--ALWAYS y'hear?--remarkably similar to themselves. in every track on this glorious CD, one of their least hard 'n' heavy, the band takes early 90s Grunge to fantastic new levels of Sludge and dire weirdness, the standouts (to me) being BULLHEAD and MAGIC PIG DETECTIVE. If you want the sameole MTV, corporate radio, emo andor Nu Metal filth thats acting as a plague to modern music, then go away. you won't like this because, quite frankly, your brain has bee shrinked to a level so small as you can never understand what is so special about this music. Melvins use both ambience and talent to pump out one of the strangest and most entertaining bunch of songs ever recorded, and this is, in my ohsohumble opinion a PERFECT companion piece to HOUDINI. if you like these two, move forward and get THE CRYBABY and HOSTILE AMBIENT TAKEOVER before checking out their earlier works. If you don't like it, besides being a musical retarded, you won't like much of this band's legend. 'nuff said...

but thats just my opinion. i could be wrong.

1 out of 5 stars Music For the Most Committed.......2006-09-07

After a driving four song opening sequence, concluding with the monster jam "Revolve", the Melvins decide to delve into ambient noise, destroying the momentum and stopping the cd dead. I'm all for experimenting, but for God sakes know what works and what should stay in the can! The Melvins idea of experimenting is starting a song (if you can call it that) in one style, then ending it in a radically different tone, failing to fuse the two together. If you think it's great to crank up your speaker to hear this electronic noodling, then get blown away when they suddenly decide to play a metal riff...then buy this cd. To me this is old and sounds like the Melvins got into really bad King Crimson. This is not the Melvin's accessible, it's their most difficult. If you like heavy stuff, get Bullhead. Houdini is also very good, though the last song falls into the Stoner Witch mode.

5 out of 5 stars gotta love it.......2007-08-02

i first heard the melvins in the early 90's and was instantly attracted to the slow, creepy sound and i thought buzzo's voice was all time. he could outscream anyone! this particular album i used to own on tape when it was called lysol and i wore it out. then of course, tapes became obsolete and i just haven't gotten around to buying it again on some other format. however, i do own about 7 or 8 melvins discs and i must disagree with anyone who thinks they went downhill after this album. the crybaby, bootlicker, and the maggot series were a lot better than the credit they've been given. houdini, also really good. stoner witch...fantastic, and bluesy! and like any true melvins fan knows...it's always a gamble buying a melvins cd. you might end up with an hour of noise with a song hidden somewhere in there or you might get something like (a) senile animal, which is some of the heaviest and grooviest melvins ever produced. i mean...two drummers! dale crover always had that off beat heavy sound, and this new guy keeps right up with him. then again, it is cody from the murder city devils. so right there you gotta think...hmm...this could be really good! which it is. but it's always hard for bands to top their early material.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-05-02

If you are going to buy one melvins album make it this one. It is truly their best. It starts off with about ten minutes of very earth inspired droneing feedback. I realize that this may initially sound like kind of a turn off but its really not at all, its almost soothing. Then it bursts into what is probably the most epic of all melvins tracks. ever. Next is a cover of the flipper track sacrifice, which sound incredible sung by buzz. The only let down from this album is the fairly mediocre With Teeth. This is the only melvins song that I would really concider grunge. But fortunatly it ends before it gets annoying.

p.s. Beware of any melvins album after this if you dont like generic hard rock

5 out of 5 stars truly ahead of it's time............2006-11-29

Indeed, the Melvins as a band where ahead of the times playing super heavy, chugging riffs winking at heavy metal conventions. This album in particular,in my opinion, predates much of the current stoner/drone/ambient stuff currently in fashion : SunnO))) Boris,Sleep, etc. I think this even predates Earth 2,which many consider the benchmark on which a lot of drone-metal is measured by - not saying this is drone, but has some of those elements (heavy use of feedback, long extended running times, repetitive guitar riffs,etc.). If you are a worshiper of heavy, few match this great release.

3 out of 5 stars 31:20 Min. of Very Slow Sludge.......2006-09-30

This is for hard-core Melvinites only...and I say Melvinites because it takes alot of discipline to sit through one long track that begins with an eight minute sequence of guitar feedback, culminating with some tribal drumming and distant vocal chanting. The Melvins can rock harder than anyone else, yet they choose to perform such simple stuff. Art? Okay, let's give the Melvins the benefit of the doubt and consider them rock/anti-rock artists. One second they'll bash out a driving jam that's going somewhere at the speed of light (none of this cd), the next second, they'll do a stagnant piece that goes nowhere and takes for ever doing it. The latter just doesn't move me. So let's just get to the final conclusion...you've got to be stoned to like alot of the Melvins tunes. "Lysol" is a slow brooding disc that pretends to be building to a climax, then suddenly bails out on the last tune. King Buzzo is/was one of rock musics great singers, his vocal delivery strangulated and powerful while also being funny and dramatic, starts to finally kick it out on "With Teeth", and then the cd's over. Strange but interesting, promising but unfulfilled.

5 out of 5 stars one of the Melvins best... (not that they ever made a bad one).......2006-04-21

this one came out in '91. its one of the very few albums that included the almighty Joe Preston on bass. one of the great things about this CD is that all the songs are all on one track. so it forces you to listen to this long, winding, sludgefest in its entirety. as most Melvins fans know, this (along with Houdini) was the pinacle of their musical career. after this, they made some great albums and some good ones, but never better than their self-titled album (previously titled "Lysol", but they decided to change it once they were threatened with a lawsuit). it would be ultra-cool if Ipecac records would give this album a deluxe re-issue treatment. it definitely deserves it.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Moley, this is good!.......2007-02-10

Wow... Damn, this is a "heavy" album. Excellent music, play it LOUD! "Boris" is one of the greatest songs ever recorded, and it consists of like 3 or 4 chords played over and over and over in a truly grinding, sludgy, back prickling fashion, yet it works! Man, I like this album a lot, and that drummer... awesome. (Fairly) Modern metal at it's best.
BTW, I also own a couple of other Melvin's albums, and this one is DEFINITELY the place to start for the uninitiated.

5 out of 5 stars This album saved my life.......2006-10-11

Well...not really, but it definitely enriched my life and the lives of many of my close associates throughout the utter confusion and soul searching that was the early '90s. The is the desert island Melvins pick. There's not one crap track on it. It's pretty much all business from beginning to end. I've been listening to it for almost 15 years now and it just gets better. How many albums from that era still hold up today? Even my old Nirvana and Soundgarden records don't get as much time in my headphones as this one does...but I was always more of a metal kid anyway. There are some truly original moments on this massively influential record. Heck, there's even a band named after the opening track. Buy, beg, borrow or steal a copy. If you are into heavy music at all, you can't go wrong here. Seriously. A more solid recommendation I cannot give.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars, actually. Although - THIS IS THE HEAVIEST ALBUM I HAVE EVER HEARD.......2005-11-04

Oh my. This album is the heaviest album I have ever heard. The whole album sounds like this - imagine having your feet glued to the ground and a giant 8 ton rock is slowly crushing your body. Pretty damn heavy, right? This album makes Black Sabbath sound like The Beatles. And I LOVE Black Sabbath!

But seriously, folks. You have to get your hands on this album. And I HIGHLY RECOMMEND LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM IN A ROOM AS DARK AS YOU CAN GET IT. Turn it way up. Wayyy up. The experience might frighten you, but it is soo great. There were times during the album when I just had to shake my head in disbelief - this is TOO heavy. How can people make music like this?

Let's take Boris. Massively heavy riff repeating throughout the song. And Dale Crover's drums is basically one big fill. You actually cannot tap your foot or bang your head to this because of the magnificent Crover. Just try to, then give up, frustrated.

Other brilliant tunes include Anaconda and Ligature - just BRUTALLY heavy. It's Shoved has the same riff as Nirvana's "Milk It", except theirs has pauses in the riff, this one is just walking. This album came out 2 years before they did Milk It, so... Zodiac and Your Blessened are good. Buzz does some good tortured vocals on one of these tunes (can't remember actually, too busy drooling over the heavy guitar and bass). If I Had an Exorcism might be the tortured vocals one, actually. I THINK IT IS. That one is short, I believe. Your Blessened is good. They all are. Cow is one of the standouts - one of the best drum solos I've ever heard. However, 'Toad' and 'Moby Dick' are better (even though they both are the exact same thing - hooky pop riff, really long drum solo, hooky pop riff.) This thing is just massive pile of sludge riff and awesome drum solo. Dale Crover is not a fast, extremely technical drummer like Neil Peart (wanker). Frankly, Crover could kill him. Dale is just wailing on the drums. He's like a heavy handed brute who's been given a drum set and some sticks.

Brilliant album. If you like music that's so powerful you might get scared, buy this. Hell, if you have ears, buy this. Or download it, or get it burned from one of your friends, I don't care. ACQUIRE THIS ALBUM.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2005-02-22

this is one of the best melvins album ever..from the start of boris till the end of cow,,,BY THE WAY THIS IS GRUNGE NOT METAL...youll get hooked onto this album more after each listening

5 out of 5 stars holy cow!.......2003-06-19

the melvins are quite possibly the heaviest band in the world. These are the guys who invented sludge rock. From start to finish this album is a definite head ripper offer. it all starts with "boris" which is a 9 minute massacre of supreme sludge. And it ends with "cow" which features a 4 minute awesome drum solo from mr. dale crover. The highlighs in between are "anaconda","it's shoved", and "zodiac". Which really make you remember a cross between the stooges and black sabbath. and if you like the melvins you will love acid king.

5 out of 5 stars The Melvins Converted My Wife!.......2007-06-27

I've been a fan of the Melvins for quite sometime now and while my wife and I share a love for alot of the same music she was never a big fan of the Melvins.....until she heard "A Senile Animal". I forget where we were going but I remember we were in the car and "Civilized Worm" had just finished playing. My wife looked at me and said "Play that again, that was a good song." From then on she's been a fan, we even had tickets to see the Melvins, it would've been a first for both of us, but due to unfortunate circumstances, we missed the show....something I will never live down.
As far as album content goes "A Senile Animal" will rock your socks off. Buzzo's guitar and vocals are in top form, Jared has a mean bass sound and both Dale and Coady are amazing with a dual drum sound that is unrivaled. Not to deviate from the point but back in 2001 I saw Tool perform at the Forum in Los Angeles and toward the end of the set Dale Crover came out and played drums along with Danny Carey, it was great and I remember thinking "What would the Melvins sound like with two drummers?".....and five years later what do you know? I can't think of one negative thing to say about this album. If you are a first timer to the Melvins this is as good a place to start as any....either here or "Colossus of Destiny".......

5 out of 5 stars Best Melvins yet.......2007-06-12

This is their best effort since the 1999 Trilogy (The Bootlicker, The Maggot, The Crybaby). In my opinion, this one is better than those. At first I was skeptical of the dual drums from Dale and Coady but it sounds REALLY good, and its amazing how tight these guys are. Jared Warren provides a good Bass compliment to the bands overall sound. Buzzo is the king of riffs, as usual. The band uses a lot of 3 part harmonies in a good portion of the tracks on this album.

If you don't have this Melvins album, you need to get it. It's chock full of the heavy goodness that Melvins fans love. Buzzo even uses real words in this album.

5 out of 5 stars In Their Finest Hour . . ........2007-05-03

i will most assuredly state this is at least one of the best Melvins'
releases hands down. Jared and Coady join from Big Business to round
out the line up of Buzz and Dale that is the Melvins. heavy and harmonic,
this will not disappoint. there have been some not-so-great releases
(dare i say) over the past few years. but trust me on this one, these
guys have it right this time . . .enjoy loud and have fun . . .rock out !!

5 out of 5 stars quite good!.......2007-04-05

brings me back to the days of "stoner witch"! some of their most accessable stuff in years!

3 out of 5 stars Eh.......2007-03-20

With this much hype it's virtually impossible to avoid disappointment. I do like the record, but it's really just not as great as it's being made out to be. The drumming is indeed impressive and there's not a song on here that doesn't make all those scarf wearing pantywaist myspace bands that dominate the radio look like the cowering scum they are in comparison, but it really just didn't gel (not that I would have expected it to with two brand new members making their debut appearances). I loved Hostile Ambient Takeover, though, so interpret that however you will.

Stag is adulterated Melvins, which is a good thing. Yes, Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and their bass player of the moment (Mark Deutrom) still pound away to wake the devil. But the trademark metal chuggers frequently give way to surprisingly musical moments. Sitar, trombone, slide guitar, keyboards, and scratches soften the edges of the music. "Lacrimosa" is ambient chopped apart by power chords. Despite its Satanic subject matter, "Black Bock," sounds less like Black Sabbath than the Archies Stag is most appealing when the Melvins betray their roots, and that's about half the time. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Quirky Melvins Classic.......2007-01-04

"Stag" marks the last major label Melvins release, following their two most accessible (and therefore popular) albums of the time, "Houdini" and "Stoner Witch". Those two albums offered very sludgy, dirgy post-grunge type outings, all the time incorporating strong melody and solid structures. With "Stag" the band took a more experimental route, often throwing conventional song structures out of the window, leaving an album that is confusing, yet utterly compelling.

The album starts with a bang, "The Bit" is classic Melvins, full of powerful riffs and contrasts between brooding eerie verses and huge choruses. The album then takes its experimental turn, as from "Hide" to "Cottonmouth" it is difficult to make out any songs with standard structuring. Examples of this include "The Bloat" which starts with some old school slide guitar, then strips down to a sumptuous melodic bass line and some rather contrasting angry vocals. "Black Bock" starts almost like a kindergarten song, but then erupts into a swirling psychedelic closing section, full of lush vocal harmonies and trippy guitars. "Buck Owens" is another confusing song, with twisting rhythm and timing changes, almost like the band is experimenting with a warped take on prog metal. Fans of the Melvins' dirge will not be disappointed here, especially with "Goggles", a thunderous snail-paced tour-de-force of Buzzo's riffing.

Overall if you like grunge/post-grunge/stoner stuff, this album should appeal to you. If you like your music with a deal of experimentation it will definitely be worth your time, but for others who want something a little more straight laced, you'll be best to stick with the more accessible Melvins work, such as "Bullhead", "Houdini" and "Stoner Witch".

4 out of 5 stars Melvins is my friend.......2006-01-20

I know Melvins personally, they are my very good friends.

I came up to Buzz at a show, and I said "You are my friend." to which Buzz replied "I concur. We are very, very good friends.". He then proceeded to tell me how the next album would be dedicated to me alone, his very, very, very good friend.

This is that album.

All you Melvins out there have me to thank for this album. My fraternal bond with Melvins provided them with the inspiration needed to produce riffs. When I hear these friendly riffs I think only of how good of friends I am with Melvins, and how our friendship could possibly equate to a highly successful sitcom about friends and how friendly they all are (toward each other).

5 out of 5 stars crap!it's already oop!.......2005-11-21

i'm glad mine is still in good condition if this thing's selling for $25 used!well worth that much though, tracks like "the bit","goggles",and "bar x..."don't come along every day.this is my 3rd fav of the melvs's stuff!

5 out of 5 stars The best from the Atlantic years.......2005-07-23

This is probably the best album of Melvins' fairly brief career as major label recording artists. The riffs are heavy, but bright and bouncy rather than mired in sludge, and the 'experimental' elements are always hitched to great hooks. 'Bar-X the Rocking M' has a killer trombone solo, 'Skin Horse' is both hilarious and oddly touching, and 'Black Bock' is probably the most surprising track in Melvins' catalogue.

Less radio-friendly than 'Houdini' or 'Stoner Witch', but not nearly so weird as some other reviewers think. If you want Melvins at their most adventurous, try the excellent 'Honky' -- the next record they made after Atlantic dumped them for not selling as many records as Nirvana -- or the legendary 'Lysol' (also known just as 'Melvins' -- the one with the horserider on the front), the only full album featuring Joe Preston (Earth, Thrones). But there's no Melvins record that's not worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This USED!.......2004-05-12

Don't buy from an american seller on amazon.com; they charge insane amounts of money! as you may notice! I don't know why this important piece of the Melvins catalogue is currently unavailable in America, but you can get it at a reasonable price at amazon.co.uk -- do it!

first off, if you dont already love the melvins, then dont buy this album. Buy houdini first. this is a fan favorite album. This is what melvins fans wanna listen to.
Great album. sudden stops and heavy drunk sounding music is what i like.

only buy this album if your a fan of the melvins already

5 out of 5 stars Good to go back.......2006-01-30

I started getting into Melvins after seeing the video for Hooch on Headbanger's Ball. I got Stag and then Stoner Witch, and liked them all, except for some of the experimental tracks on them. After reading the reveiws I decided to get some of their older material, and I am glad I did. Nothing experimental here, and all good tracks. I recently purchased several CD's, so I haven't given it much play yet, but I know I will.

5 out of 5 stars Oppressive but good..........2004-11-18

I must say having heard of these guys for years, it was about time I checked their music. And where better to start than their first 2 albums helpfully combined on this one disc. Note: Ozma is actually the band's 2nd album, and Gluey... the first.

This album(s) are not going to be to everyone's taste, very murky, sludgy punk-metal, in the vein of latter day Black Flag, with touches of Black Sabbath and St. Vitus. It is very hard to listen to at times as it is oppressively slow, but have patience and you will find it a very rewarding listen. I would highly reccomend it to anyone with an open mind.

4 out of 5 stars pure and refreshing.......2004-10-11

It's a lot of fun to hear music that wasn't created with the burden of any inhibitions, and that is why I have nothing but good things to say about the Melvins and this particular album (actually 2 albums). Like the majority of us outside the Pacific Northwest, I was turned on to the Melvins courtesy of Kurt Cobain in the early nineties and I bought Houdini. Houdini is good, but this would have been a more appropriate introduction to their music and I'm glad to finally hear their music from the ground up.

5 out of 5 stars when you know you know.......2004-01-26

i've been studying these songs for years and still getting more from them, the parts, the grooves, the performances. straight from the heart and balls these songs lay down depth and reality of expression that any other committed artists of any medium strive to achieve but don't realize that they aren't even worthy and can't possibly understand or grasp the power and directness. this is purity of expression in music that is so bold it'll pass you by unless you are also worthy. in 100 years there will still be those who know about it, and there will still be few who can take it or understand it. as it's said in this compilation, "are you ready for your tenure? ... take your time to unleash."

My wife bought me this one for Chistmas just a few days ago (it's called Eggnog after all!). It's one of a handful of Melvins albums I haven't had the pleasure of owning yet. Naturally, it does not disappoint. I was just listening to the final song "Charmicarmicat" just a few minutes ago. It's a masterpiece of painfull and glorious doom, on par with "Boris" from their Bullhead album. About ten minutes of blood & guts oozing from the bowels of your speakers. It's like listening to a steamroller stuck in slow gear plowing over a mountain of screaming puppies. As I was listening, I looked up at the TV on the other end of the room and noticed that Saddam had just been hanged. It got me thinking...I wonder what music he was listening to on his long, cold elevator ride down to hell.

I bet he was listening to this song.

Ahhh blastitude: I too was at that fateful Oly, WA outdoor show. A wedding was letting out across the street. Can U imagine the reception?? Thought the AMPS were busted. Check out recording on "International Pop Underground" live compilation, vinyl version only. Tru magick, son. Abstracted Dada metal? Naw, these guys were into some serious spellcasting and here tis, their sorcerous quest come to a screaming collision, fuel fumes a million miles wide. This was the first cd I wore out. Yes, it can happen.

5 out of 5 stars Bastards.......2000-03-06

So, my best friend is away at college right now. He shares a house with three complete morons who listen to techno, indie rock and noise; and buy Aphex Twin mousepads on Ebay. These people get incredibly annoying really fast. Whenever my friend wants some time to himself, he throws a Melvins album on the turntable and those three roommates are practically out of the state before the needle hits the groove. I think Eggnog is one of the better Melvins albums to throw on that will make you, the listener, feel completely satisfied and make those idiots down the hall run for cover. The Melvins are the smartest, heaviest and most original bands around. If this isn't a good enough recommendation then you probably own a Squarepusher nightlight.

4 out of 5 stars ...I don't feel so good..........1999-12-23

"Wispy" is one of the best Melvins songs ever. It begins with pounding drums that blast into a frenzy of feedback and insanity. Then drums and bass pound out a jerky rhythm while Buzzo moans about being boiled alive or something. Then a bizarre scream erupts and you get the feeling that he's either going to die or.....well, die. The bass and drums rock out behind this for a few seconds, then...ah! a return to the pounding drums from the beginning. Then it's all over. If this sounds intriguing to you, then pick this cd up. Then listen to all four songs, which are all really good, and buy every other Melvins album that you can get your paws on. Then you will know the true meaning of Rock.

5 out of 5 stars MELVINS.......1999-08-29

This is pretty intense, even by the Melvins' standards. Charmicarmicat might be their slowest, most doom-filled song ever. They played it while opening for Nirvana, and you should have seen the crowd's faces. They were stunned! it was great to see these little kids who came to see Nirvana being exposed to something a little more...no, a lot more...good.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good.......2005-10-16

This album caught me by surprise. I've always liked Biafra's work, and had a bit of interest in the Melvins, but never expected something like this to work so well.

Both work really well together, the lyrics compliment the sound better than any of these collaborations (well, maybe besides his album with Mojo Nixon) they are hilarious, strange, and disturbing, and usually on target.

I just never really expected Biafra to be a part of another really great studio album.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best "Jello Biafa and..." discs.......2005-07-02

First let me say, I've been a fan of Jello Biafra's music starting with the Dead Kennedys, loved most of his 'Jello Biafra and ...' one-off discs, and really dug most of Lard (being also a Ministry fan).

Jello Biafa and the Melvins' "Never Breath What You Can't See" is probably tied for my favorite 'Jello Biafa and...' disc, along with EP Jello Biafra and D.O.A.'s "Last Scream of the Missing Neighbors". I wasn't a huge Melvins fan (more due to lack of exposure to them than outright dislike) but after listening to "Never Breath...", I'll definitely be checking out more of their catalog. The combo of the Melvins and Jello on several songs evoke a bit of the Dead Kennedys best disc "Frankenchrist".

"Plethysmograph" has quickly become probably my favorite post-DK Jello song. . "Yuppie Caddillac" seems like an updated nod to the DK song "Winnebego Warrior". I also liked "McGruff..." and "Enchanted Thoughtfist". The other songs are pretty standard Jello rant tunes, but they rise above the stuff on the other 'Jello and...' discs because of the Melvins' playing.

My only real complaint - and its minor - is that the song topics focus a ~bit~ much on Islam/9-11 stuff, though its not too surprising given the times.

If you're a Jello fan, I highly recommend this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Best Since DK?.......2005-03-11

I got turned on to DK in the late 80's, and never got to see them live, but they've always been my favorite punk band. I didn't get into Lard much, and lost touch with Biafra's output since then. I love the Melvyns, though, so I got this - it completely rocks.

It sounds more like Biafra's album than the Melvyns, but the Melvyn's are so muscular (Rutmanis on bass has been and continues to be a huge addition to the band) that they really bring the songs to a very high quality level, and Biafra's vocals are to Punk what Easy E's were to RAP.

Great album.

1 out of 5 stars not so good.......2005-02-21

Melvins are rock stars and have been since the early 90s , alas they dont really have it anymore . Jello is well , a spoken word artist these days . This record here falls short of anything great . It is very generic and there is really nothing special here . Just stick with your old DK records or some of the post industrial stuff he did . As for the MELVINS go no further than BULLHEAD ,OZMA,or GLUEY PORCH TREEATMENTS .

The final release in the Melvins' 1999-2000 trilogy, The Crybaby is a work of punk art, albeit one that's eclipsed by the majestic The Bootlicker, the second title of the trilogy. Where The Bootlicker is a sprawling yet cohesive aural experiment, The Crybaby is an unapologetic-nay, proud-mutant of an album. Which Melvin is responsible for brain-farting the brilliant idea of having '70s teen idol Leif Garrett sing along to the Melvins' raucous cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? Which Melvin persuaded Hank Williams III (Hank Jr.'s son!) to warble his way through "Ramblin' Man" and "Okie from Muskogee"? Jesus Lizard's David Yow and Mr. Bungle's Michael Patton are a good fit; their respective tracks take the Melvins' heavy sound to new heights. The jagged and raw rhythms of "Spineless," featuring members of Skeleton Key, are infectious and biting, but Tool's 15-minute opus, "Divorce," is sleep-inducing. Bliss Blood of Pain Teens conjures spirits with her funereal "The Man with the Laughing Hand is Dead," a bleak and spare treatment graced by a somber Melvins arrangement. The disc fades away with the arty and somewhat industrial "Moon Pie," featuring Kevin Sharp of Brutal Truth. This collection won't make the Melvins a household name, but it should propel Leif Garrett back into the rock arena. He sounds great! --Lorry Fleming

4 out of 5 stars collaborative rock.......2005-11-03

Crybaby puts an interesting spin on the collaborative approach. Working with a slew of musicians from the wider metal and punk world, the Melvins hold an invitational to their thick sludgy freak rock fest. The results are a rollercoaster of songs that run through tempos from slow to savage. "Dry Drunk" is one of the more unhinged things I've heard recently. What is going on in the background with that lamb? And what just happened in the middle with that dialog and saxophone snippet!? It's a recent favorite.

Not to be missed is the inspired "Smell's Like Teen Spirit" duet. But there's much more to this album than a great cover.

The Melvins give experimental metal a good name.

4 out of 5 stars A good Melvins driving album.......2004-05-24

Very interesting, to say the least. This albums songs are not very typically Melvins sounding due to them collaborating with a variety of other artist like Hank Williams III, TOOL, Skeleton Key, whats-his-drunk-face from Jesus Lizard and others. This album makes for a big variety of sounds: the Hank III collaborations are pretty cool - and I LOATH COUNTRY!
Fortunately, the Melvins didn't do any songs with any "Hip-hop / urban" bands....as Hip-Hop is trendy and ultimately talentless music made for idiots by idiot "urban types" "if you know what I'm bligity, bligity bling-dawg sayin'...word!" Anyway, none of that ghetto BS here....just good music, so get in your car, drive down to your local "hood" and blare this album as loud as you can next to some bruvaz Chevy Caprice soley to anger some hood-rats...this albums is great for that.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed bag........2003-09-23

This disc has a mixture of different artists and styles that doesn't go too far beyond experimental. The two best tracks are SKELETON KEY's SPINELESS and TOOL's DIVORCED. The latter is a long instrumental jam that any fan of TOOL should have a copy of even though MAYNARD is nowhere to be found. All artists on this disc share the songwriting with THE MELVINS (except for TEEN SPIRIT of course) so the sound is raw if not MELVINesque. Worth having for the TOOL tune if you're a fan.

You have to give the Melvins credit, they've managed to stick around for well over a decade, and after all this time, they seem to only get weirder, as if that were possible! Leif Garrett singing "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Hank Williams III singing "Ramblin" Man" and the Melvins all on the same cd. What other band would have done this, I ask you? Ladies and Gentleman, we need the Melvins, if for no other reason than just an outlet for bizarre behavior!! I own the whole Trilogy, all 3 cds are worth having for different reasons-The Maggot will tear you a new hole, the Bootlicker is like a cool underground finger snapper, and then the Crybaby is sort of like some weird recipe your mom cooked up one day while watching soap operas, drinking martinis and taking prozac and morphine. I rate it a 4 because, lets be honest, it is not for everyone, and it is very up and down and occasionally drags on way too much, but like I said, who else but the Melvins!!!!! I have alot of Man-Love for these Gents!

OK, so the only Melvins CD I owned prior to this was Ozma which I thought was OK, but this blew me away! Something for even the most fussy listener - Grunge for the Nirvana-heads, C&W for the Jerry Reeds, add in noise, ambient, rock, punk, all genres present and correct. Just check out the Patton track "GI Joe", or the Tool collaboration, or the Skeleton Key track....I could go on. Buy this now cuz I'm off to buy the other two in the trilogy...
