Some fantastic singles.......2007-06-27

This is the only Death Cab album I like, but it's an amazing one. If you're new to the band, start here!

I'll follow You into the Dark!.......2007-05-16

My wife and I heard the tract "I'll Follow You Into the Dark" on Jay Leno and since August is our 44th Anniversary we thought it would be the perfect song to play at the renewing of our vows. Suprisingly the entire CD was as awesome as the one song we had heard and we've enjoyed every one on it. It's a little different than what we've always listened to, things like Steppenwolf and Led Zepplin, but we've become fans of "Death Cab For Cutie!"

Hoping to pull this up to 4.5 stars..........2007-04-11

I would actually give Plans 4.5 stars, but I am rating it a 5 to help pull the overall rating to a 4.5.

This was my introduction to Death Cab For Cutie by a friend. She made me listen to "Soul Meets Body", and I was in love with that song. I purchased the album, and to my surprise, there were a few tracks I liked more than "Soul Meets Body". There are a couple of tracks that don't work well ("Brothers on a Hotel Bed", for instance), but when it does work well, it's a mellow and beautiful listen.

Standout tracks: "Marching Bands of Manhattan", "I Will Follow You Into the Dark", "Crooked Teeth", "Soul Meets Body", "Summer Skin", "Your Heart is an Empty Room".

IT'S ALL GOOD.......2007-03-23

I bought this CD after hearing "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" and "Crooked Teeth." The whole CD is quite good, and some of it is relaxing, too. We actually listened to it during dinner. It was good straight through. Haven't heard much of "Death Cab For Cutie" other than this CD, but would definitely check them out more now!

Pleasantly Surprised!.......2007-03-11

Somewhere I heard their track "Follow me into the dark" and the accoustic guitar caught my attention. I don't listen to the radio that much since I don't have a long commute - kitchen to office type thing. The other day I heard it again and this time I caught the name of the album - I'm notorious for not knowing the names of bands and this one zipped by me too. I know what I like and I know good music when I hear it. Frequently when I've bought a CD for one track I'm disappointed by the tone or quality of the rest ... but, not in this case. They have the quality of many of the bands from the 60s, but they are original and thoughtful in their writing. This record is relatively mellow, but it has as pleasant energy about it. Similar to another review here on Amazon, I'm interested in looking into their previous work and will look for new releases from them. If someones doesn't talk them out of their own style and will let them alone to continue to develop it, they'll be around for a long time I'm quite certain.

Amazing.......2007-07-29

This is my first Behemoth album and I love it. This is the best Blackend Death Metal cd/band ever. All the songs flow together and the musicianship is amazing. My favorite song are Slaying The Prophets Ov Isa, Prometherion, At The Left Hand Ov God, Be Without Fear, Arcana Heritcae, Libertheme, and Christgrinding Avenue. I just got this today (July 29) and i'm already recommending it. I can't wait to see these guys at Ozzfest.

Worthy Follow-Up to Demigod!!.......2007-07-26

Truthfully, I was afraid that Behemoth couldn't follow up to their 2005 masterpiece, Demigod. Then, I saw Nergal on the cover of Decibel magazine growling at me to stop worrying and buy the album. So I did. And I was not disappointed. Though all the tracks are good, "At the Left Hand of God" is outstandingly creepy, thanks to the choir and the acoustic guitars. Also, I think Behemoth gets the award for coolest album closer title with "Christgrinding Avenue." With songs about Babylonian demons and ancient Rome, you can't go wrong.

Behemoth does it again!.......2007-07-17

Once again... Behemoth delivers a spectacular album... and continues to surprise the listeners with new elements. I really love the chants and soprano vocals among all the other 'middle eastern' sounding instruments... it adds a lot to the music. The guitar work and drumming still draws from the vein of Demigod, but it lookes like they drew a little bit from their Zaios Kon Kultos album *forgive me all you deadly serious fans if I spelled it wrong*. The vocals aren't as blended together like they were in Demigod, but still have that excellent growl that lets you knew 'yep... this be Nergal and crew....' I pretty much can't name a favorite here because every track is good... no let downs so far.

The Black Halo is consistently one of my favorite albums. I was expecting to be let down by their next work. It's a bit different than their last album, but after several spins it has grown on me. I'll leave it to more capable reviewers to detail and contrast the albums. If you liked The Black Halo, then pick this up.

Kamelot has created their own Metal Genre!.......2007-07-27

Ghost Opera takes the band another step forward and now it seems with massive touring and videos that set a new standard the band is finally getting the recognition they so long have deserved. The new album experiments with several new ideas but somehow they never lose or abandoned their sound. The band has really created their own Genre since they sound like noone else!!

I have been a fan of Kamelot for five years now and this is far from thier best work. Don't get me wrong, the cd does grow on you the more you listen just like most of thier work. If you want to hear this band at the top of thier game i would suggest the forth legacy or karma.

Missed their mark!.......2007-07-26

Songs seem very repetitive. Also, has some rip-off "Phantom" music to create the ghostly effect. Khan needs to stop with the attempt at soft singing. His vibrato kills all of the ballad style singing and his voice sounds way over trained. I am all about great vocals and this album does a poor job of showcasing them. Khan can sing better than this. Lose the heavy vibrato. I am a Kamelot fan but the album left me wanting more. Maybe next time guys.

Well worth the money!!! Bogus DVD or not!.......2007-07-23

I REALLY like this album and am glad to see that Kamelot is continuing to evolve and mature. So many bands of this genre begin to get stagnant and eventually stale after every album begins to sound the same.

But I'm kind of conflicted as well due to one simple fact. I can think of many, many cases where a certain album by a band is a better album overall than it's predecessor, but that predecessor just happens to have that one single song that is better than anything on the newer release. Of course this is all personal opinion but two genre examples that quickly come to mind are Ozzy and Maiden.

I feel that Diary of a Madman is better overall than Blizzard of Oz though nothing on Diary quite equals the one-two punch of "Revelation (Mother Earth)" and "Steal Away the Night". And while I think Piece of Mind is superior to Number of the Beast overall, it doesn't have anything that tops the magnificent "Hallowed Be Thy name".

Ghost Opera is like this; while I think it's (slightly) better overall, I haven't heard anything that tops Black Halo's "March of Mephisto". But, reading the reviews, I see that many fans like Halo better overall anyway.

In any case, I really like "Rule the World", "Love you to Death", "Up Thru the Ashes", "Edenecho" and the bonus track "The Pendulous Fall". And, if the band continues to evolve in this way...I can't wait for the next one!! But I have to say the "bonus" DVD wasn't worth it, only 2 videos and one was a making of..., but, then again I haven't seen one yet that didn't come with the DVD so I wonder how much cheaper it would have been?

Now if they'd just come to Atlanta (or anywhere closer than a 10 hr drive) so I can go see them!!!! Because, judging by the "One Cold Winter's Night" DVD and what I'm hearing on Ghost Opera..... I'd sure like to!!!

Great album!.......2007-08-03

I'll start off by saying that i am not usually a big fan of death metal. i've heard of these guys before but just never got into them. then for some reason one day i wanted to hear something from them so i downloaded a few songs. at first listen i wasn't too impressed, i said to myself just another growling death metal band blah blah blah....that was until i gave it a few more listens and it just kept growing on me. so i went out and bought this cd along with annihilation of the wicked and they havent left my cd player since. i love the egyptian theme and the great musicianship. these guys rock and i plan on buying more of their albums. this is in your face death metal at its finest, worth every penny.

new songs are good live..........2007-07-26

I just saw Nile last night at a small club in Albuquerque between ozzfest shows and it was amazing. I picked up the new cd as well, and its good, though not all that much different than the last two albums. Black seeds... is still the best in my opinion. The new songs came off great live even before I had heard them recorded, these guys certainly are not slowing down. While a lot of the stuff is not immediately catchy, the utter weirdness of many of the guitar parts makes it worth repeated listening. The major downside to the new album is the lack of explanations for the lyrics. I always look forward to reading Karl's essays and they are not here...
I think the best part of the live show (besides the band), was this dude standing next to me who after every song yelled, in his best death metal growl, "Nile!! f*** yeah!!!" for like an hour...

Pretty good album but..........2007-07-26

One day Nile is going to wake up & realize they've made a whole bunch of egyptian metal albums. These guys have got to have other interests. Even Fear Factory realized you cant have a whole career around singing about robots. Maybe Nile should make an album about egyptian robots or just sing about satan like every other death metal band...lol

Not their best............2007-07-25

Need some cliff-notes on the natures of Cthulhu or Azathoth? Got a corpse lying around that you need to animate and torture forbidden secrets from? On the lookout for a good curse or incantation? Then, this album is for you.

With that said, if you're like me and bought this for the music, then you might not be blown away. Granted, the production is first-rate, the musicianship is top-notch, and the lyrics are *beautiful*; but, song hooks that are more prevalent in earlier Nile albums are few and far in between on this one. Even the more memorable tracks, such as As He Creates.... and Even the Gods Must Die.... leave a tepid feeling at best.

The bottom line? If you're a dyed-in-the-mummy-wrappings Nile fan with every album and in the pit every time the band comes to town, buy it. If you're looking to get into Nile, I'd recommend going with one of their earlier albums, such as Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka.

I loved Nile's Last 2 albums to Death, but this one seems alot less happening? like The riffs aren't as ripping, i find it more boring but maybe thats just me...Some stand out tracks but in comparison to there last album its sorta lackluster.

I've listened through the CD a few times now, and I must say that there's not a track I dont like here. Way of the Fist is a pure adrenaline ride from start to finish. I can easily recomend this to any metalhead, though if your skeptical, you can check videos for the songs "Ashes", "Salvation", and "The Bleeding" on youtube to get a good idea what they're like.

Whoa this c.d. is sick. If you like Motograter and Ghost Machine this c.d. will blow you away. Every song is catchy, melodic and fast paced. Easily one of the best metal c.d.'s of the year. Go pick up this c.d. if you like bands like Devildriver, All that Remains and such. It would be major if they could add a bit more weird sounds like the Ghost Machine albums but nonetheless this c.d. still rocks HARD!!

Another great metal cd of 2007........2007-08-01

I here mix reviews of these guys on chat forums. I don't understand why? They have a great sound. Ivan Moody or "Ghost" as some of you may also know him as is a great vocalist. I like his schizophrenic singing. If you liked Motogrator and Ghost Machine then this definitely is a must have. They are on the Family Values Tour with Korn and Hell Yeah this year. Go and check them out!

One of the greatest metal albums out there!!.......2007-07-31

ffdp is one of the hardest bands out there that actually has a rythm(think i spelled it correct) and meaning to the vocals and sounds. Ivan has one of the greatest voices in metal. He blends it with the music and has some pretty awesome growls he creates in his songs. PICK UP THIS ALBUM!!!!

Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert Levine

Is it bad to say I like this better than the original soundtrack?.......2007-06-02

I never thought Yo-Yo Ma would do Gabriel's Oboe (Track 1) from THE MISSION justice, but I was wrong. There's a pureness to this version that makes it easier casual listening than the version(s) on the soundtrack CD itself. So no matter how much I love the theatrical "largeness" of the Original Soundtrack (not to mention the full choir), this is the version I grab for the CD player/iPod/whatever.

My two other recommendations are Main Theme from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (Track 11) and Ecstasy of Gold from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (Track 12). I suggest playing these consecutively as a single medley. Track 11 *WILL* bring tears to the manliest among us --particularly if you remember in the movie where Sergio Leone pulls the camera up to reveal the town rising.

I get the feeling "hardcore" classical fans would dismiss movie scores as commercial work. I truly believe Ennio Morricone transcends that. Even moreso than, say, John Williams, and on a different plane than a Danny Elfman. And I can't say more about the emotion Yo-Yo Ma brings to the table than what's already been discussed.

The combination of Morricone and Ma is pure perfection. This CD fills my heart with so much joy that I could just cry. I listen to it almost daily and have given it away as a gift to my loved ones. I am captivated by their incredible talents, and I know you will be too.

Yo Yo Ma and the Maestro Marvelous!!!.......2007-05-13

Having recently succumbed to Yo Yo Ma after a longtime love of Ennio Marricone I was excited to get this CD from Amazon. It is superb! All of the songs had to be recrafted by Morricone to suit Yo Yo Ma but it is a great listen as you sonically travel down memory lane through some of Maestro Moricone's musical marvels. "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission" now becomes "Gabriel's Cello." I laugh as Yo Yo Ma bows his brains out on the "Ecstacy of Gold' from "The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly." I recommend this to all Yo Yo Ma and Morricone fans...a great listen. Soothing after a hard day!

With songs equal to those on We Have the Facts and a lush, brilliant production that continues what The Photo Album started, Transatlanticism is easily Death Cab's best record to date. Much attention has duly been focused on doe-eyed singer/lyricist Ben Gibbard, co-star of the Postal Service phenomenon, and Ben's voice is as strange, beautiful, and as strong as ever on these songs, which deal with the difficulties of long-distance relationships. But guitarist/producer Chris Walla once again proves himself to be the band's secret weapon, layering subtle sonic touches throughout Transatlanticism, which is most definitely a "headphone record." This Seattle quartet is one of the only bands to really have picked up the intelligent, emotionally resonant, and guitar-driven indie-pop torch that Built to Spill briefly lit in the mid-1990s (before themselves heading off to the stoner-rock territory). Seattle should be proud........2007-08-05

This is one of those bands I'd heard of for awhile (catchy band name), and a buddy of mine just turned me on to this disc and PLANS about a month ago, along with 2 of their bootleg concerts. I'm impressed. PLANS has been in my car CD player for a few weeks now, and this one has been in my bedside CD radio, which makes for pleasant waking up in the morning. As the guy from San Francisco mentioned in his Aprill 22, 2006 review, I'm also in my 50's and have loved most contemporary rock from the mid-60's up to today. If this is truly an "emo" band (which comes off as kind of a derogatory term), then sign me up. I like this one a little better than PLANS and won't go into individual reviews of each song (all of which I like), but for me the high point of the disc is the title track. The way the song starts out on a low-key narration and builds to its astounding climax with the chorus of "I need you so much closer/So come on..." just blows me away. Beautiful. I hope to have the good fortune of seeing these guys in concert soon. If you haven't heard their stuff yet and are considering it, I couldn't recommend this CD more as a primer.

It's okay. A friend of mine gave me a mix one time that had Title and Registration on it. I bought it because thats one of my favorite songs and I was hoping that all the songs on the album would be that good. Theres a couple other good ones on there but I am not a hardcore Death Cab fan either so I'm sure all you hardcore Death Cab fans will scoff at me for not falling head over heals for Transatlanticism. Its an okay album but not one of my favorites.

Passenger Seat and Lightness are my favorite songs. If you have to buy one album this year buy this one. It is a great album. This is not shouting junk like nu-metal. This music is fun and it is easy going so you can listen when you are relaxing. it is good with lyrics that are thoughtful. I dont know but I was thinking this might be the best album I have heard all year besides the Babel soundtrack. I would really like to see this band in concert. I think this style of music can be enjoyed by many people whether they like folk, alternative or blues. This album may not grab you right off the bat but I myself find the more I listen to it the more I love it!

I'm fairly new to Death Cab for Cutie. My first exposure to them was Plans, which I love. Saw them live with OK Go last year and really enjoyed it. I got this disc and went into it expecting to think "okay, it's pretty good" because Plans is so familiar and comfortable. However, I listened to it for the first time today and it's phenomenal.

Really.

I was drawn in right from the start with "The New Year", and I'm not going to rate each song, but the entire disc held my attention effortlessly, all the way through to the end. Right now, I like it as much as Plans. Once I become more familiar with it, I'll like it even more.

You either like DCFC or you don't...or if you like Postal Service you should automatically like DCFC.(Same lead singer.) The added attraction to this album (if you needed one) is that the title track was used in the closing scene for a recent CSI:Miami. On second thought, maybe that's not necessarily an added attraction.

Directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez spent $53 million to pay loving tribute to the vintage hundred-thousand-dollar exploitation fare that inspired Grindhouse's two-movies-for-the-price-of-one thrill ride. Tarantino's half of the exercise (which also includes Robert Rodriguez's self-scored Planet Terror) features another effusive slice of the director's eclectic musical sensibility to underscore its manic tale of stuntman/psycho-killer Kurt Russell and his muscle-car-fueled exploits. Tarantino works from a familiar formula that variously mixes evocative, semi-obscure Italian film cues from Morricone and Dinaggio, contrasting slices of '60s catalog from the great Jack Nitzsche and Brit Invasion also-rans DDDBM&T and some '70s fodder from both ends of the Top 40 via Smith and T. Rex, also stirring in a savory mid-disc run of R&B that stretches from PG&E's upbeat read of "Stagger Lee" through more familiar fare from Joe Tex, Eddie Floyd, and the Coasters. The director also serves up a couple of those deliciously off-kilter obscurities that have come to be his musical trademark as a coda: Eddie Beram's thumping "Riot in Thunder Alley" and April March's infectious ditz-pop take on Serge Gainsbourg's loopy "Chick Habit." --Jerry McCulley

Well, I can't say this is the best Tarantino soundtrack, the assembly of songs is not very homogeneous, and I don't like them all. Some are quite good though like the one from Ennio Morricone, and the Coasters.

don't really appreciate the fact that 3 tracks are dialogs.
i own all tarantino soundtracks and before this one i never really minded the dialogs.. on this one, however, they seem a little out of place.
other than that, i agree with other reviewers who cannot believe the music tarantino digs out for his films! why isn't any of this music the matter of general knowledge? it's great!
been listening to the CD on the way to the coast and back, some 10 times over, and i haven't gotten tired of it yet.
for rest, listen to sampler here on amazon. my favs are track 10 and 16.

Coasters question.......2007-05-31

Another entertaining soundtrack by Tarantino - well worth having. I'm curious about the version of the Coasters' "Down In Mexico" though. It's very different from the one on "Very Best of the Coasters." I can't tell if it's just remixed or another version entirely. I hope some R&B expert can comment on that. Finally, though, another great collection of very diverse sounds.

Good overall CD, with some issues.......2007-07-29

After 2005's astonishing Undoing Ruin, Darkest Hour had a lot to live up to with this album. Rather than doing a rehash of UR, it seems as though they tried out some new stuff on this album in an effort to expand their sound. Overall, they come out ahead, but there are also a few missteps present.

My main problem with the album is the usage of clean vocals. While clean were used (albeit more sparingly) on Undoing Ruin, they aren't done nearly as tastefully on this album. An example of this is on the second track, "Sanctuary," where clean vocals are used in a very random part of the song. This isn't to say all usage of clean vocals is bad (the choruses of lead single "Demon(s)" and "A Paradox With Flies" are actually quite catchy) it's just that it feels like they use clean vocals randomly, without regard for the effect they have on the song. "Tunguska," in particular, would have been a better song if they had just screamed the chorus.

Another qualm I have with this album is that it lacks the frantic, heavy edge previous albums had. It feels like John Henry slowed down his vocal pace in this album. While this does make the lyrics more coherent, few of these songs feel as fast or thrashy as songs on previous albums. Because of this, this album lacks the quick, memorable guitar riffs of past CDs. There are exceptions, however, as the title track illustrates, which starts off with a great riff and just builds into an amazing song from there.

With all the negatives out of the way, I must say that this is still a pretty good CD. Despite the changes, there are still plenty of songs on here that are sure to please fans of the previous albums, such as the opener "Doomsayer", "Fire In The Skies", and the closing title track, which in my opinion is one of the best songs they have ever done. Songs like "Demon(s)" and "A Paradox With Flies" use the clean vocals quite well, while others like "Tunguska" seem to perfectly blend their old and new styles, with a quick pace and an epic feel. The guitar riffs may not be as memorable, but the guitars just feel a lot more epic on this album. In addition, the solos have improved quite a bit.

Overall, this isn't a bad album at all. It feels like with Deliver Us, Darkest Hour was trying to appeal to more people, while still pleasing their hardcore fans. In that respect, they succeed, as there are some truly killer tracks here. However, I just can't shake the feeling that for every good song on here, there's one I don't really care for. If you're just getting into this band, this would be a good place to start, and if you're a returning fan, I doubt you'll be dissapointed.

Believe Me, It's Still Darkest Hour.......2007-07-25

Darkest Hour's fifth full-length, "Deliver Us", is yet another strong album by this band. Devin Townsend did a nice job producing this album, I must say, but let's get to the music.

"Deliver Us" is a melodic metal album that shows definite progression for the band. The guitars give out more of an epic feel, but are still very similar in the vein of their previous days. John Henry still stands out as a vocalist, and even with singing vocals (which he uses sparingly), he's still intense and stands out well. The best element of "Deliver Us" is the guitar work. Tracks such as "An Ethereal Drain" and "Doomsayer" demonstrate the excellence of guitarists Kris Norris and Mike Scheliebaum that they still carry on. "Stand and Receive Your Judgment" and "Sanctuary" are songs that won't disappoint for those who liked their more speed-oriented "Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation" days. "Demon(s)", the first single, has a catchy chorus and guitar riff. "Tunguska" is a perfect example of a more "epic" track. This CD is able to keep its variety, yet it doesn't disappoint.

Check this out if you're into melodic metal. If you're a Darkest Hour fan, you may notice the change, but listen to it a few times and it'll grow on you. Darkest Hour has progressed well during their years as a band, and "Deliver Us" is proof.

DH has yet to dissapoint me........2007-07-24

I commend Darkest Hour for growing on every album while still maintaining a signature sound of harsh screams and thrashy-melodic guitar work. Some more clean vocals have been added to the mix, less as an experiment this time around than on Undoing Ruin. While some reviewers here complain about this new addition, I feel that they are blended seamlessly into the mix and actually add more intensity to the overall effect. While some bands seem to be making huge changes on their latest albums (Poison The Well, Slipknot), DH has managed to change just enough to keep each album unique without disappointing their fans with a complete overhaul. I feel that this is probably the best album to date (although Mark of Judas will probably always be my favorite). In fact, this is one of the better metal albums I've heard this year.

Horrible........2007-07-24

This CD is horrible, it sickens me to witness people enjoying it. If you were expecting the guitar genius of Sound the Surrender, turn the other way.

The watered-down, generalized singing makes the CD almost unbearable, while the EXTREMELY predictable guitar solos and breakdowns make it downright disappointing.

Also, Darkest Hour sucks live. Sorry guys.

Listen to some Sleep Terror instead. The word most accurately describing this album is "predictable."

Another strong album. Definitely worth buying........2007-07-16

This is Darkest Hour's second album produced by Devin Townsend. He did an amazing job with the experimentation of "Undoing Ruin". What they learned working together on that album really comes out in "Deliver Us". Its almost a masterpiece. The guitar playing stands out the most. Townsend really focused on Kris Norris and Mike Scheliebaum. Amazing solos are all over the place. The drumming and bass is as expected of Darkest Hour -excellent time changes. Together they pulled off an atmosphere that will make this a classic metal album.
Now here is where musicianship comes in. Darkest Hour has grown a lot since "So Sedated.." and they are able to pull off a more epic sound. John Henry had to EVOLVE his vocals to fit. His screams and growls still dominate the album. He has only added another element to his vocals. Kinda like what Matt Heafy had to do with Trivium when they put out the Crusade, except not nearly as extreme.

IN RESPONSE TO OTHER REVIEWS:

There are always those "original" fans that cling on to the old school and reject the new. Yet they fail to make any comparisons between the two sounds. Darkest Hour has been playing this style of metal since they were kids. "Deliver Us" is a progression of that style -the band did not take on a new sound. If I did not follow this band I would assume that "Deliver Us" came before "Undoing Ruin", as it actually ties "..Sadist Nation" and "Undoing Ruin" together. If you loved either one of those albums then you will like this one.

When I first listened to the album and the song Demons came on i thought "what? is john trying to sing?". I was really bored by the chorus on that track. The assumption by the so-called old schoolers is that Darkest Hour is selling out, going main stream, blah blah whine poop mommy whyyyy -But if they were a little more opened minded about the new album instead of expecting the band cover something that was already done ten years ago, they would realize that John is only syncing himself in with the atmosphere Townsend was trying to create. And despite watering down the track Demons, he did an excellent job on the rest of the album. There are parts where growling just would not work. The track A Paradox With Flies is a good example of this.

Stand And Receive Your Judgment is the strongest track on this album for those who like the earlier stuff.
Tungusta is the best example of their evolution for those who were more in to their last two albums.

Happy is the composer who has an advocate as passionate and talented as Leonard Bernstein. These Copland performances have been the preferred versions since they were first issued--better even than the composer's own, later recordings. Originally they were spread over two discs, but thanks to the extended playing time of the compact disc, you can now get all three great Copland ballets together, along with the ever popular Fanfare for the Common Man. Bernstein brings to this music the right sharpness of rhythm but also a typically open-hearted warmth. He coaxes a virtuoso response from the New York Philharmonic, which knows this music as well (or better) than anyone. Self- recommending. --David Hurwitz

What more could one ask for?.......2007-06-27

Aaron Copland's masterful works are here interpreted by Bernstein. Nothing says the American sound like Copland, and there is no better interpreter than Bernstein. This recording is one of the best in my collection. I would recommend this to anyone (even non-classical music fans).

Definitive Is Right.......2007-02-27

I have the SACD version of these recordings (except for the "Fanfare" which, in this case, is the version taken from Bernstein's recording of Copland's Third Symphony) and I must agree with others here that the performances are definitive. The "Rodeo" has more energy than any other recording I know of, in fact it can almost go over the top! "Billy the Kid" is quiet and tender, dramatic and bold and "Appalachian Spring" is dead-on. The last section of this ballet is one of my very favorite pieces of music and Bernstein's tempo and phrasing here could well be called perfect.

Definitive Recordings of Copland's Popular Ballet Scores From Bernstein, NYPO.......2007-02-11

Without question, this splendid CD is my favorite recording of some of Aaron Copland's most popular orchestral ballet scores. In Leonard Bernstein he had both a good friend and a devout ally, who successfully championed Copland's music, helping to ensure his reputation as one of the greatest - if not the greatest - 20th Century American composer. Sony has done a superb job in digitally remastering this recording, offering some of the best sound I've heard from a vintage Leonard Bernstein/New York Philharmonic recording. But more importantly than the recording's superb sonic quality is the quality of these performances of Copland's scores. Bernstein leads in New York Philharmonic in these virtuoso performances, replete with lush, vibrant playing from the winds, horns and strings. His warm, truly heart-felt interpretation of "Applachian Spring" is truly mesmerizing, and the best I have heard from a recording. And yet, I am am just as impressed with his conducting of both "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid"; the latter replete with superb solos from the orchestra's timpanist. An elegant performance of "Fanfare for the Common Man" closes out this CD recording. Fans of Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra shouldn't hesitate in acquiring this superb CD.

American Music at its Highest .......2007-02-04

If I was forced to recommend one CD of American music, I would feel very safe in backing this one. These interpretations have yet to be surpassed, and not even Copland himself could muster the same type of perfection that Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic did in this recording. Bernstein's way with Rodeo is unbelievable, and this alone is worth the price of the disc. The music on this recording has a lot to do with why, as Americans, we can all be proud of our place in the history of western music.

With 39 reviews under me, I will dispense with the adjectives to try and describe each interpretation of each piece on this disc, and simply say that these performances have been recommended by almost everyone (professional critics included of course) since they appeared; get it and find out why.
