5 out of 5 stars The ugly, clumsy and brutish hardcore cousin to "Reign in Blood".......2006-12-21

Ok, why compare it at all to "Reign in Blood?" I'll tell you why...Carnivore's second album "Retaliation" was released on the heels of Slayer's undisputed classic in 1987. while the material here sounds nothing like Slayer's razor sharp, hyper speed riffage, it equals its brutality in the way it just GETS TO YOU! Carnivore have always meddled in the genre once known as "crossover" which basically marries hardcore with thrash metal. And even though Carnivore was affiliated with the NYHC ( New York Hardcore ) scene they tended to be more metal sounding but not just any metal, POUNDING, LOUD, HEAD SPLITTINGLY LOVELY BROOKLYN NOO YAWK METAL! I can honestly say that when I first heard this album, shortly after it came out, it was the only album up until that point and probably still that gave me the same feeling that "Reign" did. Again, this is more stripped down and hardcore sounding but nobody and I mean NOBODY can equal the pain and anguish in Pete Steeles's voice, not even Tom Araya kiddies. I recall seeing this on cassette in NY's J&R Records and just looking at the cover art, YES this I must own! I didn't know squat about Carnivore at that time, having never heard of them or their music. But truly, it was one of the best blind choices I ever made in buying music! Taking it home and being obliterated with "Jack Daniels and Pizza" is a thrill I will always remember! Seeing the re-united Carnivore this year was awesome( R.I.P. Keith Alexander aka Bonnano ) but nothing will ever come close to 1986-88 era Carnivore. They epitomized anger and release to me, they still rock, but seriously will Slayer, Sepultura, or Bad Brains ever retain their heyday glory? I higly doubt that. And again, they were not officially "NYHC" but this album just Doc Marten stomps over just about every NYHC album, with the exception of "The Age of Quarrel" by Cro-Mags and maybe "Victim in Pain" by Agnsotic Front. There is not a bad cut on this album, and I can recommend this to die hard fans of Slayer, Agnostic Front, Biohazard (early), Sepultura, Napalm Death and Cro Mags. chances are, if you listen to any of those bands this is already in your collection. but if not, trust me, it gets no harder, no angrier no BETTER than this. I can truly use the saying "they don't make em like this anymore!!" I haven't been interested in "metal" in over 12 years at least. Why? It all SUCKS!! Metal today, don't get me started! I'd like to see 6'6 Pete Steele slap up any poser who thinks they "shred." And of course, Carnivore went on to become the excellant Type O Negative who still record and gig, but those were the days!!! Carnivore's 1985 self titled debut is amazing as well, but for the real Brooklyn meat and potatoes don't think Biohazard, think a Wilkensen razor, I think!! So all in all, though I abhor labels, this must go in the top 10 metal albums of all time...and that includes the classics from Black
Sabbath, Metallica and Slayer!!!

4 out of 5 stars there was life before Type O..........2006-04-21

this was Pete Steele's band in the 80's before Type O Negative were around. as a matter of fact, their first album Slow Deep And Hard unofficially, was actually supposed to be Carnivore's third album. anyway, Carnivore only put out 2 albums. their self-titled debut was ok, but this 2nd album was far superior. in fact, I think Retaliation is probably one of the most under-rated albums that came out on Roadrunner records in the late-80's. pure early crossover NYC thrash/punk. its right up there with albums by The Accused, Crumbsuckers, DRI, and Gang Green.

5 out of 5 stars A Different kind of Metal.......2006-03-14

This is a very unique album. It will not appeal to all. It has a very different "metal" sound, slightly on the thrash side, with a touch of goth. It is a shame that Peter Steele did not continue with this project. His type o negative work is good, just not as cool as this stuff.

4 out of 5 stars hidden treasure, 1987 crossover!.......2006-03-10

whoa, blast from the past! i remember being a kid hanging out with these skaters back in 1988 and they would blast S.M.D. on their boombox while skating around and causing trouble. I remember this vividly. Elderly couple walks up to us. "Turn that radio off! Move it out of our way!" Skater presses stop on the boom box, moves the boom box an inch. turns volume to full, presses play, blasts music, and gives the elderly couple the finger and laughs.

well then, this music is rebelious, in yer face, funny, and disturbing. it kinda is a Suicidal Tendencies for the east coast but a lot (i mean a lot) more crass and obnoxious!

This is a pretty important album for thrash. It has a heavy NYC Hardcore influence (Nuclear Assualt Handle w/Care, Agnostic Front, Biohazard) and its just great. Type O was horrible but this, pure classic crass metal. Get it, laugh at it, crack some skulls with it!

5 out of 5 stars Maybe not as good as the first..but still.........2006-01-27

Yeah I think I like the first CARNIVORE a little better, MORE DOOM!!

But this is still no slouch..infact you could say this is THE hardcore and or CROSS OVER album ,make's D.R.I. sound like madona!!

The lyric's are funny because..well hey they all came true, which is why you may be a tad worried..because the WORLD may end as well soon!!

JESUS HITLER..man they are all here!!!

SING ALONG to them naughty wordzz my brotherzz!!! enjoy it while ya can!!

Album Description

Simon Dawes is a band, named after no one. Though they're mostly just creaking into being twenty-one, you could play their new record for anyone and tell the most insane lies about it: re-issue of some lost psych-folk-rock artifact, unknown bootleg side project with one Beatle, Kink, Floyd, and Who member that never came out for legal reasons, the album The Strokes tried to copy except they couldn't figure out the guitar parts...and they would all be believed. Produced by Tony Berg (Aimee Mann, X, The Replacements).

5 out of 5 stars Buy This Album........2006-11-14

Simon Dawes is bringing back real music. This album is amazing all the way through. You won't take it out of your cd player... Trust me. They are going to be huge. If they don't become an epic new band, then there is something wrong with the world. Their music is a flashback to the Stones and Bowie, to name a few of their great influences. Buy this album, you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars great band.......2006-10-17

there is more talent in this band than in most of the new acts combined. great songwriting, awesome vocals, and really original guitar playing. the lead guitarist can use a slide like no one i've ever seen before. i think they are potentially one of the great bands of our time.

4 out of 5 stars Talented.......2006-09-14

I just saw these guys live. First, the product description of this album is poor. The person that wrote it obviously never heard them live. They have great vocals with lyrics that are well thought out, deep with experience for such a young age, and executed with enough intensity to capture the attention of people sitting 75 yards away from the stage in the back of a dark room. The guitarist is downright gifted. He and the lead singer also played with Band of Horses (the headliner). They added several meaningful dimensions to their music that wasn't captured in the album, "Everything All the Time". This band will become important after a couple of more tours. All the indie subpop kids will start hearing the name "Simon Dawes" but unfortunately, an appreciation of non-repetitive structures and different time signatures other than the boring old "4/4" will only be afterthoughts of why this band is so talented.

5 out of 5 stars A classic in its finest form.......2006-09-25

If anybody associates themselves with 80's thrash or hardcore, they had to have crossed paths with Carnivore. Take it or leave it, Carnivore were innovators of crossover thrash, and unlike many other crossover bands, Carnivore get the formula correct.

The debut album, Carnivore, is a lot doomier and thrashier than "Retaliation", but this is probably for the better because "Carnivore" is a vastly more solid release.

This albums is a classic in every way. Almost every song is memorable and you do, indeed, remember it. A common trademark of Peter Steele's music, especially this album, is the burning sense of humor. All the lyrics are clever and exceptional, and reading the liner notes/lyrics is a treat in itself.

Some noteworthy tracks: Predator, Carnivore, Legion of Doom, Armageddon, World Wars III and IV.

This remastered edition is a major plus, the 3 demo tracks are a really handy bonus to have and give a good primitive sound to some off their later tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Pullin' broads and guzzelin buds!!!.......2006-03-03

Carnivore is one of the most unique bands ever. No other bands out there sounds like Carnivore. They take thrash metal and combine it with Black Sabbath riffs and a heavy New York Hardcore influence. There is also a Black Flag influence here too. There is so much anger and cynicism in Peter Steels voice, just like Henry Rollins, that adds so much to the vibe of the album and it makes it very relatable to metal heads. Carnivore is fun album with lyrics about nuclear holocaust, armageddon, being a man, drinking beer, riding motorcycles and terrorizing people in a post apocalyptic wasteland. With lyrics like these how can you not love them?

5 out of 5 stars They'll eat you raw and spit you out.......2004-12-22

This 1985 landmark debut still ranks among the top of my metal collection. Together of course with it's successor 'Retaliation' (1987), the second and final Carnivore instalment. What would have been the third, 'None More Negative', later became 'Slow, deep and hard' , the debut album from singer / writer / bass player Peter Steele's new band Type O Negative.

Carnivore, the band, is brutal, pounding, sawing and grinding, but also surprisingly chique and top notch hardcore metal. Trash, but with a mind behind it. That, and ten gallons of pure blood squirting anger.
The lyrics are 'multi interpretable' at least and 'red-neck tough talk' at most, even more on the 'Retaliation' album. But in his growing 'more mainstream' Type O-carreer Peter Steele apologised numerous times for all the right-winged negativeness in his early, small minded interviews, and as such, the two albums of hatecore, can be seen more as the outings of a frustrated adolescent, than any serious attempt to make political statements.

So the final judgement: Carnivore in the new century gets the benefit of the doubt. The album "Carnivore" here has 'survival of the fitest' as main theme, one would guess. Male supremacy combined with the exploitation of a suggested World War III (and even IV) and such devestating disasters as a thermonucleair holocaust.
'God is dead' is the title of one of the songs, but the message is that he was killed by mankind, and not some 'outer worldly, diabolical force'. The song 'Armageddon' preceeds as does 'Legion of doom', in which a post-world-war gang of barbarian motorcyclists rule the face of the earth, being meat eaters in every way they can.

The title track is a homage to the oral sexual act on a woman, but it's the male who really benefits from the entire ordeal. The opening song 'Predator' with it's electronically sampled sounds of war and mayhem, combines the themes of both sex and survival.
Domination is the key word here, but 'survival' is the driving force behind it. I guess Mr. Steele was or is in his personal life a loner and a survavalist as well. One man who rules all and takes no prisoner, deeply scared he'd be some one's prisonner himself one day.

The enitre Carnivore act itself was pretty dominating as well at that time. The three angry young trashers ruled the stage, wrapped in animal fur and ice hockey gear, and frontman Peter Steele (then selfproclaimed Lord Peterus T. Steele) standing tall at a mere 2 meters, hovering over the audience, taking no sh*t from no one and being a menace all of his own.

5 out of 5 stars Type O before they were Type O..........2003-10-15

Good heavy cd...very memorable..but yeah musically doesn't compare with the likes of Slayer or Metallica...but this is way worth your money for tracks like "Predator, Carnivore, God Is Dead, and WW 3 and 4"....a definite must for any fan of Peter Steele..or any metal lover in particular...worth your money.

3 out of 5 stars When preparing for Armageddon.............2003-10-01

When comparing Carnivore to Peter Steele's latter band, Type O Negative, it is easy to note a vast progression both musically and lyrically. However, die hard fans will find some valuable rarities within this little collection. Carnivore has the thrashy and somewhat melodic punk sound that was temporarily adopted on Type O Negative's first release, slow deep and hard. The song God Is Dead is the stand with its chaotic verses and sudden calm and melodic chorus, that is reminicent of Too Late.

There is no question about it, this is nothing to take seriously. Carnivore is essentially a testosterone driven piece of chaos with little musical ambition and profoundly stupid lyrics.

The perception of future and its expansive chain of inconsistency, topics explored here and shaped by technical playing, forgotten and yet superior to a band that have similar lyrical views but inferior musicianship or within the nu-metal mold, I'm reffering to Fear Factory, just think of the level they would never reach.
Also this album is the least consistent of their career, yet it manages to be superior to the so-called masterpiece Demanufacture. That makes it clear, and be blown away by "From this Day Forward", "NEMESIS", "Cybervoid" and of course "Carnivore Mothermouth".

2 out of 5 stars boring release from a great band.......2004-02-29

Only one other review for this album-- sad! Not because this album is great, which it isn't, but because the band itself is great, one of the greatest. If you are impressed by this album, I envy you, because their other albums should completely blow you away. This one is very boring and uninspired by comparison. The unique Obliveon sound is there, but the riffs and arrangements are overly simplistic and go nowhere. I hate to make this accusation, since it gets made all over the place by anyone who doesn't like something, but this is obviously a commercial effort. After years of laboring in undeserved obscurity, they were probably looking for a wider audience-- I don't blame them, but I wish the results were a little more engaging. Or maybe they were running out of inspiration, since they split up not long after this was released

Oblivion have been around since the 80's but this CD is as new and fresh as any New metal on the market today! They rank right in there with Fear Factory and Static-X. I had come across this band's new material from a cd in a metal mag, and instantly fell in love with the first track on this CD "Technocarnivore Mothermouth". I bought this CD the day after heard this tune, and the entire CD is a 10++ in my extensive collection of metal CD's.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant big band bash.......2001-09-21

The end of the big bands was for me hastened by the introduction of free jazz. Instead of a bunch of musicians being whipped in to shape by a leader like Basie, Ellington, Shaw etc with a few featured soloists, we got a free-for-all with everyone on stage expecting to be able to do his thing as and when he wanted. With a small group this might have been justifiable but in large numbers all I heard was chaos and anarchy. As a result I tended to steer away from `modern' large groups. Until I heard this album. What a revelation! The discipline, professionalism and arrangements of older-style bands is present, but with modern melodies, harmonies and musical styles. The title track is particularly impressive. Commisioned from Carla Bley to mark the 10th anniversary of Ellington's death, it is something I think wouldn't have sounded out of place in his own later suites. The invention of composition by Bley and skill of execution by some splendid musicians (Lew Soloff and Andy Sheppard are particularly strong) made me feel as if I was hearing an old favourite on the very first listening. All the tracks show exactly what power a large group can have, and how the emotions it can stir are quite different from listening to small intimate quartets etc. If this is what big band music has become, I'm delighted. The album is a live recording and the level of audience and background noise is, for me, just right to give the atmosphere without detracting from the music in any way. On the basis of this one album you can call me a convert - I will certainly try other Carla Bley recordings now to see how they measure up!

5 out of 5 stars Carla Bley Strikes Back!.......2000-07-28

This is one of the greatest big band masterpieces. Carla Bley composes and arranges with an astounding sense of maturity (some may consider uncharacteristic of her) but still retaining that quirky storytelling and self-mocking charm she is known and loved for. The soloists on this album are spectacular.

Fleur Carnivore, a dedication to Duke Ellington, is beautiful and unpredictably ferocious as the name would connote, and the great sound quality makes the horns' animalistic pounces even more exciting. Some of the tightest playing I've heard.

Song of...Canute is a pulsing unsettling latin tune with a great solo by the characteristically overblowing Christof Lauer.

Ups and Downs is an excellent light hearted swing, with a melodic line that truly goes up and down. Swallow's walking support is to die for.

The Girl Who Cried Champagne is an engaging and humorous suite-story handing a main theme over to many terrific solos, including Karen Mantler's one-too-many-glasses solo.

Finally, Carla always ends up with something down to earth soulful, as is Healing Power, a "get-well" song she wrote for a sick friend. The band struts with emotion as this tremendously classic album comes to a close.

5 out of 5 stars there was no band like them before or after their existence!.......1999-06-27

in the days before type "o"carnivore was an up front truth or rude in your face band.any song you pull out of their two albums are sung with force aggression and emotion.very few songwriters have the talent to write and perform what they've written with the way they want their art expressed the way pete steele can.he has written many songsfor other bands including agnostic front.he is definitely a pioneer of hardcore and well respected in that arena.the songs on their two albums are the most real original stylistic pieces that cant be compared to any band anyone has ever heard.a definite must have for any hardcore/metal fan.i am proud to say growing up in the n.y. area to have been blessed to see and hear them live on various occasions and will never forget the intensity of their shows.especially negative night at lamour w/sheer terror and biohazard singing their 1st albums.

          3 out of 5 stars Pretty well-written for thrash/hardcore........1999-05-10

Pete actually gets occasionally pensive on a few of the songs in this double EP. Steele whips out his Wildean wit on more than half the tunes given here; making "Retaliation" a better read than listen. And listen I did. Peter puts his often (unintentionally or not) comical lyrics through his grating thrash machine. Best read's "SMD" and "Sex and Violence." Hey, it's even funnier than any of "Tank's" recordings!

5 out of 5 stars Angry, New York City, Metal/Hardcore music........1999-04-13

This split cd might not have all of the songs originally recorded on the individual albums. But it is definitly worth buying. Not to mention, finding the individual albums is next to impossible these days. If you like some of Peter Steele's earlier work with Type O Negative, then you'll love Carnivore.
