2 out of 5 stars WHAT THE F#*K HAPPENED!!!.......2007-08-03

I don't know what happened to these guys ,but they got lost making this CD. Influenced by someone or something that took this one in a whole different direction. There are shades of old,but only a bit here and there. If you liked Asylum Of The Human Predator, don't buy this one. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is some of the drums and guitar are still good. BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME...

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-05-17

I've been a devoted Hell Within fan since "Asylum of the Human Predator." I've seen them twice in concert, hung out with them after the shows, and even took a few Jager shots with Matt McChesney (after watching him jump off the stage and [...]. It's easy to imagine the anticipation with which I was overcome upon learning of the new album's release date. After purchasing it, I eagerly popped it into my car's CD player and waited to be blown away.

And I waited.

And waited.

And waited.

Nine tracks later, my reaction to the album was "Eh."

This entire CD comes off like it was put together by a committee. It's as though they put together a focus group who couldn't decide if they wanted the band to sound like Slayer or Avenged Sevenfold so they just opted for some twisted amalgamation of both. There are two or three standout tracks, but on the whole the rest of the album feels like they just can't get on the same page rhythmically, vocally, or melodically. I have to hand it to Matt for trying more clean vocals on this go-around, but it seems like his range is pretty limited and it detracts from what is an overall brutal musical approach.

All I can say is that I am disappointed. I've been listening to the album repeatedly to find something I like, and I just can't. They had a good thing going and now they've gone off in a direction that I'm not sure I can follow. Don't get me wrong -- I think bands should evolve and I don't think they should necessarily stick with the same tired old formula.

I do think, however, that they should avoid the focus groups the next time and just do what comes naturally.

    Album Description

John Langstaff, now 83 years of age, is the founder and director emeritus of Revels, the non-profit performing arts company that produces Revels Records as well as 'The Christmas Revels' annual winter solstice celebrations in 12 cities across the country. This is the complete collection of Langstaff's disc, featuring all four acclaimed previously re-released CDs originally recorded in England. The recordings have been digitally re-mastered at London's famed Abbey Road Studios. Included are many traditional British and American folk songs and ballads, most with simple, art song settings. Legendary pianists Sir Gerald Moore, Sam Mason and John Powell, as well as guitarist Martin Best, are featured.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to Explain.......2005-08-10

This band is hard to explain. It is metal and rock done with a raw emotion that comes through in the vocal delivery. The songs are very memorable and catchy. They were definitely an under-appreciated band.

4 out of 5 stars VERY gloomy but rockin'.......2001-05-16

It's really an injustice to rate this a mere 4 stars. But man, the lyrics on almost every song are depresso to the extreme. I expected some hazy gloom n' doom when I first listened to it, but instead it is overt and continuous anguish. Still well worth buying, though, because of the pure rocking craftmanship. Sudden time changes and tempo variations, whisper-to-slight grindcore vocals, and not to mention some of the catchiest, fist-pumping riffs from the land of the Vikes. If you can tune out the total negativity of the songs' themes, or if that is your mood, and you're ready to rock to it, buy this album ASAP! Matthias Lodmalm spells g-e-n-i-u-s.
