Killer thrash metal around Viking themes.......2007-05-28
Not as good as "Hammerheart" by a long shot, but still very, very good. This was my first purchase from Bathory and I was impressed on the first listen. Bathory has their roots in Black Metal and some of that comes out on this record. But, this one is also the first of a trilogy of Viking-themed recordings including "Hammerheart" and "Twilight of the Gods." I was so impressed with what I've heard on this record and "Hammerheart" that I immediately ordered five of Bathory's other albums.
This RULES.......2006-12-24
The bridge between "Hell Awaits" and "De Mysteriis dom Satanas" - listen to this and awaken to the dawn of black metal.
I Once.........2006-12-18
Read an interview with Quorthon in "Lucifer Rising" Gavin BaddeLey's book..He said he was inspired by Comics since he was too young for sex..I found this so sweet that I give him a five on one of his albums and say, hey it's a shame that you had a heart attack at 39. May you live..I will review a little more at a time when I have a fuller knowledge of the wonders of Bathory.Make sure to buy thE tribute cd..
Classic.......2006-05-08
not much to say about this aside from its a great album and you need it
Ageless Piece of Metal.......2006-02-25
I am 32 old years now, and I remember I hear this album for the first time when I was in high school... I can tell you I have not stopped listening 'til now. This is the best Black Metal Album so far. The atmosphere is unbelievable from the first intro and the classic anthem A FINE DAY TO DIE, then the records takes you to a journey of speed, really fantastic, a lesson on how to play fast and heavy but with endless variants, special mention to GOLDEN WALLS OF HEAVEN amd PACE TIL DEATH that will make you sweat just by listening... and the journey ends with another masterpiece of melancholic roughness with BLOOD FIRE DEATH that ends as the record begins, so by the time it ends, you start feeling addicted to speed and will push play again and again and again. The album is consistent and intense, hard to pick just one song, definitely you have to listen the journey from the beginning to the end every time you play it.

4.6 Their (his) best.......2006-12-13
The best Bathory cd... Classics. 13 candles, Equimanthorn, Massacre, Call from the grave. Classics! Quorthon stepped it up big time on this release after the haunting "the Return". This is still the best sounding Bathory disc and it slays from start to finish. Also great cover art.. Better now than ever.. RIP quorthon..
Split-your-head-open harsh!.......2006-08-21
I am a newcomer to Bathory. I rank 5 stars here for honestly being one of the nastiest, skull-splitting brutal, clanking loud pieces of recorded music I have ever heard. The vocals are just plain scary. The music sounds like welded steel slaughter house machinery caked in dried blood and running on top gear. This album is that freakish weird insect under the rock that you picked up playing as a kid. It startles you initially and then you want to go back and look at it carefully again and again. At a loud volume this album rattles dental work and revisits ice hockey concussions. It's like being checked on the ice without a helmet by Cromagnon Man.
(damn)
Bathory? does it need any more reviews?.......2006-08-20
I believe that lots of people have been reviewing Bathory's works for years, and I believe that everyone who enjoys metal music knows how great and important Bathory is. So, in case you don't know it yet, or you don't like it....well too bad for you!
Classic Old School Black Metal.......2006-04-15
This is what pure Black Metal is. This cd is is just killer and any Metal fan would really enjoy this. Ace was a true pioneer in this form of metal. Even though Venom and Celtic Frost were very influential to Black Metal Bathory was the very first 100% Black Metal Band. Come to think of it Venom and Bathory music wise have simularities but Ace was the first to use the Black Metal Vocals (aka Linda Blair Shrieks) and the guitar white noise feed back which is commonly used in Black Metal.
I own the first 3 Bathory albums but this by far my favorite and in my opinion Bathory's best.
If you are just getting into Bathory or Black Metal this album is a great starting place.
R.I.P
Quorthon
Now the life you have lived have comed to light and unfold is your perversity........2005-11-30
Think of your favorite Black metal vocalist, album or band. There is a very good chance that Bathory inspired them. This was one of the first "real" Black Metal album's and so many years later, it is still one of the best. Between Quorthon's dark lyrics and throat ripping (incredible as well) vocals. That alone would make the album worth a BM fan's purchase. The drums are what you would exspect from Bathory, having ok production on them but keeping a really raw sound to them. The guitar work is also raw but a little more technical than the BM that would be released in the few years followed. The type of song range from the truly dark "Woman of Dark Desires" and "Enter the Eternal Fire" to songs which are short amounts of chaos "Chariots of Fire" and songs like "Equimanthorn" which has elements of both. All in all, this a great classic Black Metal album. It is my second favorite Bathory album behind only "Blood, Fire Death" Enjoy.

It grows on you.......2005-03-15
When I first heard this album I wanted to trade it in/throw it out! The music is so great, some of the best Bathory(Quorthon) has ever done, but man...those vocals. After I calmed down and listened to it again remembering that Bathory's vocals have never been that great anyway, I kind of liked it. There is some fine(out of tune) guitar work in there to hear, if you can get past the awful singing. If you are just getting into Bathory don't buy this one! get one of the older ones man! "The Return" is my personal favorite. If you want to hear "Viking metal" buy an Unleashed album, if you want to hear "Epic Bathory", buy this one.
Killer Viking metal! Twilight of the Gods!.......2003-11-07
Damn this is one awesome metal album! This is a one man album, that being the mighty Quorthon who plays guitar bass and sings. The drums on this album are a drum machine but it sounds excellent. Quorthon's clean vocals sound nice and refreshing rather than the screeches of earlier Bathory, but all Bathory is good. There's a nice classical influence that compliments this album. Each song is at least 7 minutes long, which is a good thing. Of all the Bathory albums I think this one has the best production and sound quality. It's a wonderful metal album that everyone should own. I don't know what is wrong with that John Holton punk(he must be g@Y), he says the album is dissapointing, he must be a lame slipknot fan...anyway this album is a masterpiece, I think it's one of the better Bathory albums in their catalog, I recommend this to anyone who likes real metal. Peace!
Disappointing.......2001-09-17
A fairly poor album. Quorthon's guitar is noticeably (and painfully) out of tune in several acoustic passages, and his attempts at clean vocals (as opposed to the harsh guttural vocals of earlier albums) are almost laughable; he is almost unable to carry a tune. The songs are rather monotonous musically, though the lyrics are interesting. The last track (with music from Gustav Holst's "The Planets") is not a very good blending of metal and classical (if you like that mix, listen to Therion). Overall, this was a disappointment after being introduced to Bathory with "Under the Sign of the Black Mark".
Enchanting.......2001-08-12
Twilight of the Gods was my first Bathory cd after hearing so much about them. I like sorts of black metal offshoots. This is Viking metal. There is also some Nietzsche thrown in- a quote and the title track, Twilight of the Gods, which I think is the high point. There is a classical influence. This is very heavy and slower with clean vocals and chanting. This is the last of the Asatru trilogy by Bathory. Truely, an enchanting album is Twilight of the Gods.
JUST ESSENTIAL ATMOSPHERIC MUSIC!!!.......2001-01-14
This is a essential atmospheric epic-progressive metal, with Quorthon's sung vocals (not screamed), with beautiful melodies and good lyrics. This late Bathroy's work (1991), together with "Blood on Ice", are the last good stuff of this swedish group. I think Quorthon has done himself everything at this album, but I am not sure, as my version just shows the lyrics and not so much about the credits... Don't expect to hear trendy black metal of the 90's here... Quorthon does what he wants and "Twilight..." is very well done... Just light a bit of incenses and get into this trip... It's very nice!!!

Hammerheart = Epic Masterpiece.......2007-07-23
I listened to this album a few years ago so I should spread the word...
This album is full of heart it's also raw, heavy and epic. The production is terrible but I don't think it is a bad thing when it comes to this piece of art. I have never heard anything like this in my life and I don't think I ever will again. So if you have an open mind about music and especially metal pick this up. If you dont like it thats a shame, this album has a very special place in my heart. RIP Quorthon
Hammerheart hammers away..........2007-05-28
This album is a nearly perfect metal record. It is thunderous, haunting, furious. If you are a fan of powerful metal sound then you cannot pass this one up. I think it is even better than Metallica's Master of Puppets. The theme centers around Norse concepts but that doesn't detract at all from the content of the songs, all of which are very good, important contributions to this record. Buy this one immediately if you don't already have it!
#1 of the EPIC Viking Metal Trilogy.......2007-02-23
Actually, all three of his Viking albums are excellent! With Hammerheart we are treated to a wonderful array of acoustic, symphonic, bombastic, and metal delights. What Quorthon did with the Viking metal is immeasurable. To take the heritage and meld it with the various musical elements this album became a tribute to OUR ancestors. If I can use one word to describe this album it would be SINCERE, and the workmanship of the music and the journey this album takes you on is proof of Quorthon's desire to present us with something worth treasuring. With Bathory's prior release: Blood Fire Death, there is more of the old black metal influences, and subsequently after Hammerheart, Twilight of the Gods presents us with more of an overt ambient quality. This is why I recommend to YOU, the reader that you go with Hammerheart first if you're not sure which album to choose. However, if you're like me you'll love each one for it's attributes and get all three. If you don't "get" Viking Metal, you never will, and this music is not for you. If you enjoy black metal influences combined with a cultural/ethnic/Heathen elements you'll enjoy this wonderful album for the rest of your life.
Perhaps the BEST Metal Recording of All Time!.......2007-02-05
Make no mistake, Bathory's "Hammerheart" is one of the best metal recordings EVER! When I first heard "Hammerheart" it utterly blew me away. I bought a copy for a friend and didn't see him again for four months; he said he listened to it EVERY DAY of those four months -- it's that good! This recording is simply the quintessential realization of metal's potential.
Bathory is, for the most part, a one-man "band" masterminded by 'Quorthon', a pseudonym for Thomas Forsberg from Scandanavia. Forsberg released a total of 12 legitimate Bathory albums and a handful of Bathory compilations (as well as two hard rock recodings under the name 'Quorthon'). The music on these recordings ranged from black/speed/punk metal to epic/moody/doom/power metal, obviously depending upon Forsberg's mood. "Hammerheart" is definitely his magnum opus. Please DO NOT judge this album by his other works like the first two satanic/horror/speed platters or the one-dimensional "Octagon" (which was Slayeresque but with lousy production and non-memorable ditties). Trust me, "Hammerheart" stands alone.
The songlist includes:
(1.) "Shores in Flames," a blow-by-blow account of a savage Viking village-raid.
(2.) "Vahalla" which shares the basics of Norse mythology in an epic way.
(3.) "Baptised in Fire and Ice" which features fitting punkish-styled verse vocals and a brilliantly implemented low-tuned bridge.
(4.) "Father to Son" which starts out calm enough until a startling and crushing metal guitar riff speedily kicks in.
(5.) "Song to Hall Up High," the debut Bathory ballad; Quorthon can't sing, of course, but all his vocals strangely fit the music, passionately and naturally.
(6.) "Home of Once Brave" an emotional slow-paced juggernaut marred only be Forsberg's inexplicable rip-off at the end of the song of the closing riff for "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (still, I admit, it totally fits!).
(7.) lastly, there's the hallowed "One Rode to Asa Bay" a potent historical relating of how Christianity was introduced to the Viking culture, which was the death-knell of fantastical Norse religion.
"One Rode to Asa Bay" is a long but simple song; it's also one of my favorite metal pieces, a masterpiece, in fact. It stands up there with the very best metal songs you can possibly cite (e.g. "Hallowed Be Thy Name," "A Dangerous Meeting," "Crown of Sympathy," "The Cry of Mankind," "A Celebration for the Death of Man/In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion," "Wings of Time," etc.).
The production isn't the greatest; in fact, it was literally recorded in a garage in suburban Stockholm (the so-called "Heaven's Shore Studio" -- yeah, right); but it in no way mars this work of genius.
I strongly encourage fans of all styles of metal to add "Hammerheart" to your listening arsenal, unless of course you only prefer bands like Poison and Warrant (giggle).
Personally, I won't even take calls from people that don't own "Hammerheart" and hold it dear.
Hammerheart.......2006-12-12
First and foremost, I must address the fact that I was almost retired from writing reviews for this site. The only thing that stopped me from doing so was this album, plain and simple. It's very important that if a piece of music exists that is, well, this important, then it is your absolute duty as a listener to help make others aware! This album is honestly that good. Those of you that have heard very little of Bathory's work probably know that Bathory was, at first, a black metal project. Their self-titled debut showcased great talent and basically gave birth to the black metal style (shreiking vocals, thundering drums, tremolo guitar picking, etc.). As many have noted, throughout releases Quorothon progressed as a songwriter and eventually took a huge turn in his songwriting. This is most noted with "Blood Fire Death", an album that has been noted as the very first "Viking Metal" album. Though "Blood Fire Death" was epic in its own right, I still feel it had the "black metal" feel that was presented most notably in previously albums. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying "Blood Fire Death" was a black metal album, I'm simply saying that he was still a little early in the transitional period. After "Blood Fire Death" comes "Hammerheart". I can't say enough good things about this album. Most of the vocals are done clean and sound magnificent. I'm not saying that Quorothon is a great singer. As a matter of fact, he's actually a little below average with his range, but the fact remains that he puts so much passion in what he's saying, you'll barely notice the lacking vocals. All instruments play their parts perfectly. I believe that there is only one word that can do justice to the songwriting in this album, that word is epic. Another element that sets this album apart from many many others, past, present and future, is the lyrics. The lyrics are absolutely stunning and are included in the booklet. I could go on and on about how great this album is, but I highly doubt any of you fellow shoppers have the time to read about it. Basically, I'm just going to say that if you're lucky enough to be looking at this page and don't own this album, do yourself a favor and pick it up!

This one's for thrashers.......2003-03-15
Now before you go off on me and saying how i dont know anything about Bathory consider the fact that Bathory has something to offer to fans of nearly all genre's of metal and personally, I love nearly all their albums.I've heard people remark that this album is "...not worth bathory worship", meaning tributes or cover songs, but thats just bs and those people know nothing about thrash. This album is a full on thrashing deathfest, with that old metal attitude that we all love. The riffs are very catchy and it all works because the music is not watered down at all. My only complaint is that i would like to see more lead guitar. Otherwise if youre into thrash or even death metal along the lines of Vader and Vomitory this album is a great buy.
it's so-so.......2001-03-18
well, here is a completally different bathory album. the 3 first bathory albuns are BLACK METAL, and all the others are viking metal. but this one is DEATH METAL. for sure, the heaviest one. there are some very good songs, but if you listen to it for a so long time you might get annoyed. some songs are equal. but some are VERY good, like the title song , REQUIEM.

Triumphant.......2005-12-26
This is, with Nordland II, the best piece of "Viking Metal" available (at least that I'm aware of). They're also two of my favorite albums, only held back by Lost Horizon's "AFTTGB" and Virgin Steele's "Invictus".
These albums are chocked full of raw, well, what better words could I use than "POWER", "EPICNESS", "SPIRIT", and "DEVOTION". Bathory has always been more than noteworthy for their excellence in their rythmic black/thrash metal hybrid, but these albums are off the wall!
If I only get two hours of sleep, either Nordland should fix me up (true). My body is killing me from my relentless strength training, either Nordland should push me beyond limits I never knew I had (true). Need something to play for an amazing sexual experience? You got it, Nordland(I/II) (true). Need to call Quorthon back from the Golden Halls of Valhalla? That's right, Nordland. Well, OK, I've never tried that last one. But it's not a magic I'd put beyond this music. Excellent way to finish off the musical career of black/thrash/viking metal's finest act. Burnin' Leather!
Heaviest Metal On Earth.......2005-05-29
The first Bathory song I ever heard was "Mother Earth Father Thunder". I was blown away. This is without a doubt, the *heaviest* metal song I've ever heard in my life. It's epic and powerful. It grabs you where it counts and kicks your ass. You'll never hear metal the same after this song.
Some of Bathory's stuff is too thrashy/black metal for me (never did like 300bpm songs with indecipherable screaming), but the viking metal stuff he did was outstanding.
RIP.......2004-07-19
Rest in peace, modern day viking and inspirational musician.
Let's go to Nordland!.......2003-11-02
I am a new fan of Bathory. This was the first Bathory album that I purchased. I listened to the sound clips and they sounded pretty cool so I decided to get the CD. When I listened to the Cd for the first time I was just BLOWN AWAY! I have never heard anything with so much power and beauty as this CD other than the greatest band ever(DEATH). This CD is full of memorable guitar riffs and vocals. The whole album is perfect, every song is great. I recommend this album to anyone who listens to real metal.
Simply Excellent.......2003-01-31
This is an album of great power, majesty, and beauty. I just heard a little clip of the title track and thought I'd give it a shot - the whole album is excellent. High production values, and a wide range of styles make this a fantastic buy. I guess it's no longer black metal - but great Nordic metal.

An amazing epic adventure.......2006-08-06
I don't know where to start. Well, don't listen to this before part 1 ofcourse. This is as amazing as it gets, I mean it, it is pure EPIC. It gives me goosebumps non-stop. The atmosphere of this cd is something else. The only word to describe this cd is "WOW"! It opens up a portal to a world of beautiful vast landscapes, mystical theories and viking battles. Nordland part 1 and 2 are a really amazing cd set to own. The fidelity of the overall sound quality is so out of this world, yet it makes the listener feel so at home.
IF YOU ARE INTO EPIC TALES, DRAGONS, VAST MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPES, THEN BUY THIS AND PART 1, IT WILL BE YOUR FAVOURITE CD'S FOR A VERY LONG TIME, I PROMISE. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO ANYONE WITH A TASTE FOR REAL MUSIC.

Album Description
Bathory's rediscovered love for power & brutality continued onto this album from 1995. A first in that it deals with modern topics. It's a crossover styled release offering a brutal yet clean cut of that jugular vein. Black Mark.

A Thrashed Bathory........2006-12-22
If you listen to classics like, the first Bathory or The Return and then throw on Octagon, it doesn't sound like the same band. The most wicked one man band strayed away from the early sound that made Bathory a must in any Black Metal freak's collection. On this one you still have that shrewd Bathory guitar sound, the drumming is like old school thrash and speed metal, the singing reminds me of something like old Sacred Reich. Basically, it's not like the early stuff, but still good enough to listen to. I wouldn't listen to this one time and then chuck it: come on, it's Bathory! I gave it 3 stars as a decent thrash outing; an extra star for four because it's Bathory man!
QUORTHON 'S LAST FULL THRASH ALBUM........2006-11-13
IT MUST BE NOTED THAT THIS ALBUM FOLLOWED REQUIEM WHICH WAS ONLY 33.25 MINUTES LONG AND OCTAGON COMES IN AT 39.51 MINUTES.MY POINT IS THESE TWO ALBUMS COULD HAVE BEEN SOLD AS ONE ALBUM AS THEY ARE BOTH SIMILAR AND THE LAST OF THIS TYPE OF MUSIC BEFORE QUORTHON WENT ON HIS NORDIC ADVENTURE WITH BLOOD ON ICE.DESTROYER OF WORLDS AND NORDLAND 1& 2.OVERALL THIS ALBUM IS VERY POWERFUL WITH SOME STAND OUT SONGS LIKE BORN TO DIE(MY FAVOURITE)GREY.CENTURY.33 SOMETHING.WAR SUPPLY BEING THE BEST.BELIEVE IT OR NOT THERE
IS EVEN A KISS COVER CALLED DEUCE ON THIS ALBUM.OVERALL AN EXCELLENT PRODUCTION. R.I.P BROTHER QUORTHON.
it jams.......2005-01-07
i bought jubileum 3 (a bathory compilation) at a flea market after hearing the first track "33 something" i had never hrard bathory.after hearing the whole thing i was a little disappointed w/ most the songs , except for the tracks off requiem & octagon . since then i've bought these two albums & octagon is my favorite of the two . its raw & sloppy like like fresh clevered flesh topped off w/ a sleazy sounding cover of kisses deuce . this is not a band trying to sound like pantera or anyone else ,least not on this album.
hmmm.......2001-03-18
Well, this is probably the most unliked bathory album in forever. nobody likes it. personally, i think it's not bad , and not good. the production is not so bad as everyone says, but the songs are not well composed. it's kinda the same style. there is a very good song called born to die on it. but anyway, i like to listen to it.
ok.......1999-12-30
After trailblazing through black metal, death metal, and viking metal, Bathory for the first time takes on an already established style - Pantera-style aggro metal. Unfortunately, Bathory doesn't get a good enough production job to pull it off. A weak drum sound and awkward sounding vocals just make this seem like a watered down version of Pantera. Quorthon can scream, and he's even proved that he can sing, but he's not too good at the hardcore-style shout. The underlying songs aren't too bad, but they just don't come across.
