3 out of 5 stars Worst Flotsam & Jetsam album ever.....but it is still worth a listen.......2006-12-19

After two member changes and somewhat of a let down album('High') F&J release 'Unnatural Selection'. The best word to describe this album would be mediocre. With a new drummer and guitarist on board (who truly don't do a bad job) the album seems unfocused and boring at times. The arrangements are lacking and some of the pieces just don't fit. If you are expecting some masterpiece the guys are far from it. But there is certainly some good songs. Probably the best on the album that could remind fans of there earlier work would be the song 'Promise Keepers' a well put together song. Then there is 'F**kers' which has an interesting feel to it and 'Brain Dead' which I also enjoy. The rest just seem a bit generic and uninteresting. With that being said fans should leave this for last. And after owning there whole catalog this is by far there worst album but is still worth a listen or two.

4 out of 5 stars I'm not a F&J fan, but I like this album.......2003-01-05

I suppose this would be like a non-metallica fan saying that the new Reload cd is brilliant, so keep in mind I'm not trying to come off like that. I like this cd ok, it's not a favorite, but it's got some cool stuff. My favorite on the cd is Welcome To The Bottom. It's got a good blend of acoustic and electric guitars, setting the mood for the song quite well. I wish there was more of this on this particular cd. There's a funny song on here called F**kers, too. They have some cool heavy guitar riffs on here, and the drums sound the way Vinnie Paul's do in my car stereo - not the drummers, just the mixing. I suggest downloading a few songs to sample the cd, you may or may not like it. But if you do like it, help support us musicians, and buy the cd.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Change.......2001-01-27

I just recently started listening to Flotsam and Jetsam. I love their old stuff but I really like this CD the best. This album is definatly underated.

2 out of 5 stars Not their best stuff.......2000-07-28

I never really understood why F&J never get the recognition they deserve. They have got to be one of the most underrated bands around. This cd is not the greatest they have created. It definitely lacks the heavy grooves from their previous efforts of "No Place For Disgrace" and "When The Storm Comes Down." It appears to me they were trying to capture a power metal sound on "Unnatural selection." If you are new to F&J, get "No Place For Disgrace", "When The Storm Comes Down," "cuatro", "Drift'" or "High." All these cds shows what kind of awesome music can be created.

2 out of 5 stars Worst Flots album yet..........1999-07-23

Wow. I can't believe how disappointed I was to finally hear this record. The new drummer isn't bad, but the band and new guitarist were trying for something a little TOO different, and didn't succeed. I miss songs like "I Live, You Die", "Blindside" and "Monster". Bring back the heavy groove, guys.

5 out of 5 stars say, it's not too shabby..........2002-10-22

when i first heard evolution, it was on the radio and i didn't KNOW it. barry jamieson (1/2 of the duo) was playing at the Spundane in chicago, and his mix included most of 'solina' and some other really good song that i still don't know. then i looked him and his group up and found this cd. TRUE STORY! anyway, this cd is really good, you willn't be disappointed. from the ambience of the first couple minutes of 'numb' to the pounding rhythm of 'walkingonfire,' and the cool stuff of 'solina,' this is such a great tech album, so get it! everyone! even you who are skeptical on if it isn't good, it really is. bye

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed with this "Selection".......2002-10-04

I was anxiously anticipating the long-awaited release from one of progressive houses inimitable production duos, Evolution, as I have been a fan of their work for some time now.

Evolution won me over in 99' with their smoldering pot boiler of a rework in the X-Cabs "Infectious." From then on I was constantly amazed at their stellar soundscapes and finely tuned prodution skills on tracks like Cass/Slide's "Opera" and more recently "The Energy" from Salt Tank.

But with the just released long player "Unnatural Selection", I am shockingly surprised the album only includes 6 original/contemporary tracks (of which one is a remix)and ultimately disappointed in the fact that of the remaining 5 cuts, 4 of those are dated 1996 & on. (I hadn't realized Evolution had been so lazy in composing tracks for a much anticipated artist album) I would expect QUITE a bit more originalty and creativity from Evolution and a COMPLETE album of brand new tracks recorded at LEAST within the last two years! Evolution indeed...

This "debut" album should have been marketed as a "greatest hits package with bonus cuts!" instead of what the listener is left with. The annoyingly monotonous bleeping of "Better House Music" and 1996's outdated "Blaster" (replete with antiquated vocoder effects, no less) are two tracks the album could have done without entirely. They act as nothing more than sonic train wrecks in what otherwise might be regarded as a journey of sorts.

Make no mistake, it's no "Airdrawndagger" and not without merit but I find that after 3 forced listens to this album, I've come to like it best when I program the above mentioned tracks out of the albums mix completely. It's a much smoother, more bearable ride.

"Unnatural Selection" is not entirely without its strong points, either. The much lauded "Walking on Fire" is one of the best progressive singles of the year. And With those ever present, deep, swirling bass synths that fuel nearly all of Evolution's compositions is the driving trance menace of "Crocodile man." "Solina" (also from the Evolution back catalogue) provides for a moment of ambient chill which switches the LP suddenly to a gentle, grooving beat. The other new stunning Jayn Hanna track, "Making Sense",(which should have closed the album) sounds strangely out of place with it's balearic infused production which contrasts sharply with the albums other more electro-trance elements but is ultimately a more brilliant effort - just ill advised for this type of album. Also, the fact that the ambient mix of "Walking on Fire" follows the track as the albums closer is yet another stroke of confusion.

When and if Evolution choose to release a follow up to this disjointed trance morass, one can hope they generate an entirely new body of material and polish it with a better sense of direction and overall cohesion.

    5. There's Just One Thing You Need to Know w/Daniel Koppelman on piano

    Product Description

Music by Christopher Dobrian for piano, often a Yamaha Disklavier, in which most of the composition and performance is done by computer programs, sometimes with help by Daniel Koppelman, pianist. As Dobrian writes, "The intention is not for the programs to emulate traditional musical behavior, but rather to explore new musical possibilities implicit in certain paradigms of computation or computer decision-making." The compositions are 'Entropy', 'Unnatural Selection', 'Line/Phase Minutiae', 'Degueudoudeloupe', and 'There's Just One Thing You Need to Know'. Each composition is based on a different algorithm. And the results are often fascinating because the algorithms clearly have thought of things that humans would not have thought of. The results are also impressive in that Dobrian has extended the piano to the limits of what the instrument itself can play. If you're interested in experimental approaches to music, this CD is a must!
