Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Needs to be reissued..........2007-07-11

This one, along with "Wild America" really need to be reissued together in a double disc 2-for set. Although Surprise is probably the stronger album of the two, they are both worth having for hard rockin' southern tinged boogie. These guys along with bands like Every Mothers Nightmare, Dangerous Toys, and perhaps Junkyard were just raw hard rock with for lack of a better term a "southern style"... and to me anyway Tora Tora stands up to anything today that rocks in this vein. These guys of course came out when the market was just oversaturated with hair bands as explained, and GNR was around by then making waves of their own, keeping it real when it was becoming comical and stale. Overlooked bands like Dangerous Toys, and Tora Tora needed to be heard, perhaps they just had the bad timing and it might be revived with a reissue perhaps...not sure, hopefully a new generation of rock kids will find this one enjoyable.

This Cd contains not one dud track that I can find, it flows from track to track, riffing and roaring along all the way, occasionally shifting a bit to a more bluesy feel on a song like "Hard Times", and a couple excellent ballads like "Phantom Rider", and "Being There" keep it from sounding alike from track to track. The big songs back in the Mtv days were "Guilty" and "Walkin' Shoes", 2 very rocking songs that put them on the crowded map, but this one is truly a great debut to not have any filler to speak of. You can put this on and just let it play out. It even manages to pick up momentun on the latter half of the Cd with "Riverside Drive" (very rockin'), "She's Good, She's Bad", and "One For The Road"...which is of course a dated song, not sure that one would be accepted today, even in the hard rock world drinking and driving is not something you want to glorify; it's just wrong...but it rocks nonetheless. This was 1989, things have changed a whole lot, but what hasn't changed is that when you put in a Tora Tora CD, you are gonna wanna hit repeat also.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-07-05

Tora Tora is a great hard rock band. Both of their albums are great but Surprise Attack is the best. I wish this album wasent so hard to find.If you collect 80's hard rock albums this is a must to add to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Tora Tora's Big Surprise.......2006-06-30

One of the great overlooked bands of the late 80's. Every song is awesome and memorable. I just played this the other day and it still rocks. Stand out songs are Phantom Rider, Loves a [...] and Walking Shoes. Pick this up and you won't be dissappointed. Loud and Raw, just the way to listen to heavy metal.

4 out of 5 stars This band should have been huge.......2005-08-24

The sad thing about this band is that so few people I talk to have even heard of them. I agree with another reviewer that if this CD had just been released a few years earlier, Tora Tora would have been huge instead of forgotten. There is not a bad song on this CD. Great melodies, and excellent guitar work. Some of the best blues-rock you will ever hear. 28 days and Walkin' Blues are favorites of mine, but you can't go wrong with any part of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!!.......2004-01-04

Buy this! Forget about "Wild America"! It sucked anyway. This is the one to buy!!!
