"Fell on Black Days," indeed. Seattle sludge slingers Soundgarden made a living out of cathartic, woe-is-me wailing (we're talking the banshee vocals of Chris Cornell and the crypt-creaking guitar of Kim Thayil), but this wallowing in grim depression ironically proved to be the band's most uplifting career effort. When the reclusive Cornell ventures out of his shy-guy shell, it's typically via a primal scream of cathartic emotion--he might camp it up with a sophomoric "Spoon Man," but most of this vicious disc leaps straight for your jugular. Generations in the post-millennial future will one day refer to this record to discover exactly how 1990s rock & roll was done. --Tom Lanham

Album Description

European pressing of the 1994 album. Soundgarden's finest hour, Superunknown is a sprawling, 70-minute magnum opus that pushes beyond any previous boundaries. Soundgarden had always loved replicating Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath riffs, but Superunknown's debt is more to mid-period Zep's layered arrangements and sweeping epics. Their earlier punk influences are rarely detectable, replaced by surprisingly effective appropriations of pop and psychedelia. This pressing features the bonus track 'She Likes Surprises'. Sony. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Reign of new rock.......2007-08-03

Soundgarden's "Superunknown" album was a blast for me in the Summer months of 1994. Sonic, dark rockers like Black Hole Sun and My Wave were all over the metal stations. The pop fun of "Spoon Man" was also a part of this great, great album. Beyond what was on the radio was still accessible and it gave hope for me that some new band had hit the charts that might actually be worth sticking with. Metallica had been riding black album royalties for a good few years by then, and with up and coming bands like Faith No More and Spin Doctors suddenly spiraling into retirement, the rock scene needed some boost. Oh sure everyone loved Nirvana and Pearl Jam, even Alice in Chains was making some waves as hard core newcomers. This album was fun because it featured a 15 songs that all brought a lot of listening pleasure to the table. Also be sure to check out the songs called The day I tried to live and Limo Wreck. I do not live in the past but if there was a time when I was excited about rock music it was when I was listening to Superunknown.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT ALBUM OF SONGS.......2007-07-28

IF YOU LOVED LISTENING TO BADMOTORFINGER BY SOUNDGARDEN YOU'LL LOVE THIS ALBUM TOO! SUPERUNKNOWN RUNS NECK AND NECK WITH BADMOTORFINGER AS FAR AS FAVORITE SONGS, BUT YOU BE THE JUDGE. IF YOU LOVE HARD ROCK BUY 'EM BOTH!

5 out of 5 stars Am I the only one who hears a strong 80s gothic influence in this album?.......2007-07-09

Having just come out of a major recycling of my old 80s gothic favorites (well, not really out of it!) I am now hitting my 90s favorites. This album is in my top 5. It truly amazes me that Soundgarden was so overshadowed by Pearl Jam and Nirvana. They were so much more complex and rich. It dawned on me today listening to it that there is surprisingly a strong 80s gothic feel to the album, one that may not be apparent at first. I hear Bauhaus, March Violets, Cult (early) , Comsat Angels and even Joy Division echoes in such songs as "Just Like Suicide",
"Mailman" and even in the timeless "Black Hole Sun" I hear a subtle trace of Peter Murphy in Cornell's voice when he sings "Black hole sun won't you come." If anyone else hears this, give your feedback.

5 out of 5 stars Tied with Badmotorfinger as Best Soundgarden Album.......2007-06-30

This album, along with Badmotorfinger, is perfect in every way. I believe neither surpasses each other because they are two completely different styles , which also proves that Soundgarden was not only one of the greatest bands ever, but also one of the most creative and progressive. Badmotorfinger was more heavy in your face rock, while this album has a darker mood with great melody and songs you will never forget. What makes this album so great is how perfectly all of the band members work so perfectly together to create such harmony. Containing the must-have songs Fell on Black Days, Black Hole Sun, Like Suicide, 4th of July and Limo Wreck, you simply must have this album or you are missing out on musical perfection.

5 out of 5 stars A gem of the grunge era.......2007-06-26

The 90s was probably the best time for rock all along. Nirvana's appearance early in the decade brought the end to the tiring hair metal scene and brought in the era of alternative rock. Nirvana's success led to more grunge bands hitting it big like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden led by lead singer Chris Cornell and guitarist Kim Thayil.

Superunknown is the 4th studio album by Soundgarden. Many consider Superunknown to be one of the last gems of the grunge era. I recently amplified the tracks to the album that I ripped as the sound quality was not that great. 13 years after it's release, it's still standing tall compared to the current emo/Nickelback-clone/indie scenes.

Here's a runthrough of the songs:

1. Let Me Drown - a good opener to the album. The opening riff is the strong part of the song and a good chorus. A good rock-out song. 8.5/10
2. My Wave - The first of the 6 radio singles. The follow up is one of my favorites. Little faster, tempo-wise. 10/10
3. Fell On Black Days - Popular song that can be heard on your radio station at times. The song is dark, probably about jailtime. More of a laid-back track than a rockout party. 9.3/10
4. Mailman - an ok track, not really one of my favorites though. 7/10
5. Superunknown - oh yeah, a real rocker, would make a good guitar hero track. The title track was a radio single, but not as popular as others like Black Days, Black Hole Sun, and Spoonman. An easy favorite. 9.8/10
6. Head Down - The track is kind of like a transition from Superunknown. You may hear a part of the ending of Superunknown on the beginning of the track before hearing a few chords. Takes some time to build up. This track is also more of a relaxing tune. 9/10
7. Black Hole Sun - Ah yes, by-far, their most popular song ever, and perhaps one of the most popular rock songs of all time. This was considered the last major grunge hit and was accompanied by a crazy and iconic music video. Instant favorite. This song won the grammy for best hard rock performance that year. 10/10
8. Spoonman - ironically, Spoonman won the best metal performance that same year. Not really a metal, but a very catchy song that was parodied on Bill Nye the Science Guy. You can hear the sound of spoons tapping each other in the background. Also to note is the bass beats in the song, especially the long stretch in the middle of the song where the song appears to be on a different rhythm scale. Great song to dance around to. 10/10
9. Limo Wreck - a nice little triple meter grunge tune. Note the lyricism in the song. 9.4/10
10. The Day I Tried To Live - ah yes, another popular radio single and one of Soundgarden's best songs. 10/10
11. Kickstand - it may sound more like a punk song. This is a short fast-paced song, possibly about sex...8.9/10
12. Fresh Tendrils - another standard grunge song. 9.0/10
13. 4th Of July - Ah yes...the song starts out with a few distorted noisy chords which makes up the base of the song. Another of my favorites on the album. 9.7/10
14. Half - a 2-minute middle-eastern styled instrumental with some blurred vocals in the background. Sets the stage for the closer. 9.3/10
15. Like Suicide - yes, a killer and lengthy solo. Once again, the song is probably about sex. The song has a nice guitar solo in the middle and really is one of the best closers on an album ever. 10/10

Final rating...perfect 5 out of 5. This is quite possibly one of the great rock albums of our time. If you are new to the grunge scene, this is a good album to start with. This is also an essential 90s rock album, so if you're building a collection of great rock of the 90s, make sure you got this album in your library.

5 out of 5 stars Bonus Track on this EP is a MUST.......2007-07-22

I've Been a Soundgarden fan for many years. It's very difficult to pick a favorite song, but "Kyle Petty, Son of Richard" is one of the strongest B-Sides I have ever heard. It's as good or better than "Bleed Together" from the 'A-Sides' greatest hits compilation. It could have easily been included on 'Superunknown'.

If you like Soundgarden or Audioslave and haven't heard this song, this CD is worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars THE BEST ''seattle'' ALBUM EVER MADE???.......2005-12-14

Well I dont know bout that(because there is also DEATH and BLACK metal from Seattle..N.M.E(early 80's!),INFESTER,DRAWN AND QUARTERED..etc) but the song's on here are top notch and DARK!! This CRUSHE's anything ''nirvana'' ever did, those limp wrist's!!

Chris Cornell was a talented guy, both guitar and vokill's were awesome, his lyric's how ever are just HAUNTING on this album, let it be known Mr. Cornell is not a big fan of the KOSHER or new world order..he might even be GERMAN himself I am not sure!!

''4TH OF JULY'' is the highlight by far and rather uneasy in it's dreadful feeling, all the rest are cool as well!!

This is def a classic 90's album..well in the more general rock sense of course!!

Hear this..

''The fire is spreading
And no one wants to speak about it
Down in the hole
Jesus tries to crack a smile
Beneath another shovel load ''-4th of july!!(4th of JOO lie!!)

4 out of 5 stars Soundgarden's Superunknown Extras.......2006-07-05

A generous four stars for this good EP. Superunknown is Soundgarden's magnum opus and is perhaps the greatest album from the "post-grunge" era. Soundgarden were definitely inspired by Black Sabbath, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, etc. and brought the best of these influences to the core of their songs. On this EP, "Superunknown" and "Fell On Black Days" are similar to the album versions. "Jerry Garcia's Finger" is trippy enough and funny for a couple of spins. This one is worth buying for "She Likes Surprises" from the International LP version and the excellent stripped-down acoustic version of "Like Suicide". If you like Chris Cornell singing and strumming on "Like Suicide", check out his rendition of "Black Hole Sun" on Audislave's DVD "Live in Cuba".

5 out of 5 stars great companion to superunknown.......2002-12-04

Soundgarden's superunknown stands out as one of the best albums of the 1990s. The Superunknown single is a great companion to superunknown mainly because it contains songs that should have been contained on superunkown such as she likes suprises available on the international version of superunkown and the acoustic version of like suicide. There is also the video version of fell on black days and jerry garcia's fingers which are also good.

5 out of 5 stars good soundgarden rarities.......2002-01-24

The Superunkown single is good ebcause is provides some rarities from soundgarden like the acoustic version of Like Suicide and She likes suprises. It's a good comapanion disk to superunknowon.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS CD!.......2001-12-24

This single, which serves as the soundtrack to the CD-ROM Alive in the Superunknown (now out of print and difficult to track down), is 25 minutes of rock heaven. Seriously. Minute for minute, its just as good as Superunknown. The title track, "Superunknown", is a revelation, one of my favorite songs off of Superunknown. Not only that, but its nice to have a version that doesn't fade straight into "Head Down", which is nice when assembling a comp CD...hehe.

The rest of the CD is a treat for any Soundgarden fan. You get the outstanding video version of "Fell On Black Days", which is even better than the album version-seriously. "She Likes Surprises" is from the international version of Superunknown, and is a nice treat. Its a rocking tune with more great riffs that didn't really fit on Superunknown. Nevertheless, its Soundgarden at their best; complex guitar work, Chris Cornell vascillating between a croon and a scream, and Kim Thayil soloing away.

The acoustic version of "Like Suicide" is wonderful...beautiful even. This rendition is Chris Cornell only, singing and playing his 12-string acoustic guitar. It adds an added dimension to the already great studio version, and presents a fragility rarely found in Soundgarden's music. The final track, "Jerry Garcia's Finger", is a spacey instrumental derived from a longer jam (which is split up into numerous parts on the CD-ROM). Great stuff...it may take awhile to sink in, but the song is among the most remarkable Soundgarden ever recorded.

Buy this CD while you still can; you will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Like visiting heaven..........1999-10-04

When I bought this album I was in a very low point in my life.Kurt Cobain had just died and I was quetioning the meaning of it all. This album , along with Vs. from Pearl Jam, showed my true music and gave me hope and strength to carry on . This music is otherworldly soul, spacey and etheral.Passionate , honest and heavenly. The best album and music ever made...forever.

Coming from a long-time Soundgarden fan, this had to be their best cd! "Like Suicide" display a twisted, but soothing sound, while "Kick Stand" is an up beat song that basically gets the adrenaline going. Not to forget the classics "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman". But don't get me wrong, all songs but "Half" are excellent songs. This has got to be the best cd i have ever listened to. It offers the best guitar riffs ever heard of, and the voice of Chris Cornell is as always, unbelievable! Buy this cd now!
