After riding the coattails of their local heroes Entombed for the first half of the 1990s, Gothenburg, Sweden's groovy At the Gates hit full racing power in 1995. For a brief while, the Slaughter of the Soul release almost single-handedly supported the flagging death metal scene, ushering in a second wave of metal energy that lives today in bands like the Haunted, which features ex-members of At the Gates. While respectful of the religious intensity of labelmates Morbid Angel and Carcass, At the Gates was a slightly more domesticated beast. Weaving melodic textures into its assault, the band slowed its tempo to something less diabolical, winning over large audiences who craved metallic intensity but were turned off by the Satanism and blood worship of the outfit's contemporaries. Sadly, the band broke up in 1996, but its deeply infused union of death metal, melody, and boogie remain distinctive several years later, even overshadowing the sparser but similar efforts by the Haunted. Six bonus tracks on this reissue of Slaughter of the Soul--including frantic 1995 demo tracks and cover songs from Slaughter Lord and Slayer--sweeten the pot while presenting At the Gates at its pinnacle. --Ian Christe

5 out of 5 stars The epitome of melodeath?.......2006-07-23

If you consider yourself a melodeath metal fan, or if you're a newcomer, it is absolutely mandatory that you're familiar with the following four words: "Slaughter Of The Soul." If there ever was a classic in this genre, this album, the fifth studio release and fourth full length from At The Gates, is it. This record did the same thing for melodeath that "Reign In Blood" did for thrash. It's often thought of as being the epitome of the genre, because of its importance. It almost single handedly created and established the Gothenburg metal sound. It has influenced almost everybody-from In Flames (who are also a highly influential melodeath group), to nine-out-of-ten modern American metalcore bands (Shadows Fall, for example).

"Slaughter" was also probably the heaviest melodic metal album to be released in the 1990's. Every song on here is very scorching and infectious, and loaded with propulsive, attacking the jugular rhythms, fiery, bludgeoning riffs, catchy, ferocious guitar leads, fast, thumping (at times pounding) drum patterns, winding, careening (albeit brief and un-complex) guitar solos, and high-pitched, black metal influenced, almost Death or Kreator-esque vocals from frontman Tomas Lindberg.

The pounding, blistering, lead-off track, "Blinded By Fear", is one of the album's highlights, but every track is essential listening. "Suicide Nation" is a good representation of the disc as a whole, since it's one of many brutal songs on here with a breakneck tempo, blowtorch riffs, blinding guitar leads, and a wild guitar solo to cap it all off. The title cut is fueled by scorching, propulsive guitar shredding; "Cold" boasts a brutal, surging guitar and pounding drum attack, including a brief, skillful drum solo and a melodic guitar break around two minutes in; and "Into The Dead Sky" is a slow, serene instrumental interlude with clean guitar strums and whooshing background noise (bands like Killswitch Engage probably got the idea for an acoustic interlude from this song.) And, lastly, "Unto Others" is a particularly attention-grabbing, memorable, and infectious song, because it includes a somewhat pretty flamenco guitar interlude.

If you buy the reissue (which you definitely should, and probably will because the original version of this C.D. is very hard to find), you'll get six extra songs which make for a great listen and are essential for your collection. These songs are "Legion" (a Slaughterlord cover), "The Dying" (an unreleased track from the "Slaughter Of The Soul" recording sessions), a Slayer cover of "Captor Of Sin", two 1995 demos (one is of "Unto Others" and the other is "Suicide Nation"), and "Bister Verklighet," a song originally done by the band No Security.

If one had to find fault with this album (aside from that the guitar solos are nothing really special), it would be that it sounds a little dated by now. It has aged very well, but if you're already initiated with melodic death metal, or if you've been listening to metalcore for the past several years, "Slaughter Of The Soul" may have a very small initial "wow factor" on you. But this isn't At The Gates' fault-how were they to know that a countless number of other bands were going to cop their sound? In fact, if you listen closely to a metalcore album, you should be able to hear that some of the riffs on that album have been lifted wholesale from "Slaughter Of The Soul". Thus, this record might take a little while to grow on you, but you still need to own it. If nothing else, at least buy it so you know where melodeath began, and so you can say you have a complete collection. And if you're new to the genre, there's no better place to start than right here.

5 out of 5 stars Best. Sellout Album. Ever........2006-03-15

Okay, the previous (negative) reviewers have all pointed out how this album is not as technical or as original as their earlier work. Having recently acquired the progressive With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness, I'll agree that Slaughter of the Soul's monolithic tempo, repeated riffs and conventional rock song structure don't match up to the weird, almost hiccupy changes in tempo, odd song structures, constantly changing guitar riffs and moments of shear silence on the previous album. There's nothing as blazingly original here as "Raped by the Light of Christ" or "Non Divine." Indeed these guys just don't -do- as much in three minutes as they did before.

But what this album lacks in technicality and progressiveness (proginess?) I'd argue that it makes up for in its sheer melodic/harmonic catchiness, a catchiness that leaves At The Gates' brutality untouched. It's an achievement that I can think of only one other band achieving in metal history, one that, like At the Gates, flirted with mainstream success but never quite made it: Testament, with their first album, The Legacy. No, At The Gates don't sound like Testament, but the combination of catchy melodic/harmonic hooks and aggression is what made The Legacy so great (along with Alex Skolnic's guitar solos, of course).

As with the Legacy, the fairly monolithic pace of Slaughter of the Soul makes it unrelenting in its assault. Far from making it less brutal, the catchiness of this album even enhances the brutality by boring the dark riffs and relentless rhythm into your subconscious. This, the wonderfully agonized vocals and the just-fuzzy-enough production make the album quite atmospheric, evoking inklings of some combination of despair and homicidal frenzy. It's not nearly as claustrophobic, frenzied or despairing as the greats of Black or Doom metal like Esoteric and Weakling, but the songs are catchier and more accessible and thus the atmosphere rubs off on you more easily. But then you'd hope it'd be brutal by as much as looking at the track list.
Speaking of which, if you don't want to read about the album in detail, skip to the end of this review. When I say something is `great' or awesome, I mean it simply sounds good. As I admitted before, this is not a very technical album.

Standout Tracks
"Blinded by Fear" is as wonderful an opening track as you can ask of this album. After a suitably ominous electronic fuzz and spoken-word clip it establishes the driving rhythm of the album and its dark atmosphere with great guitar riffing. There's a very brief bridge/solo in the last minutes, but it's extremely brief and doesn't make this song any 'slower' or more subtle while giving it a melodic edge that such a blunt instrument would normally lack. 5 stars

"Slaughter of the Soul" starts off with a very short, heavy intro section before going into the song proper. This is every other song on the album in a nutshell. Things are always changing enough that you don't get bored, but not so much you can't follow them. There's a really great interplay between the two guitars so that they compliment each other rather than dueling in total over-the-top metal fashion. 4 stars

"Cold" features a great solo and more fabulous guitar work, to the point it stands above the other excellent material on the album. 5 stars
"Into the Dead Sky" is a nice quiet instrumental interlude between musical blows to the face. It's not great and of itself but it fits perfectly. 4 stars

"Need" is in my opinion the best song of the album. Nice and varied, going from melody to melody on brutal guitar riffs until it fades out, almost serenely, into a single glockenspiel over silence.

So yeah. 11 catchy, brutal tracks together make one of the most accessible and most influential albums of the 90's. In addition to their Gothenburg contemporaries and successors it had a massive impact on metalcore-listen the Darkest Hour's The Mark of the Judas and you can't hope but hear the shadow of this album. In terms of making serious metal accessible, this album knows few peers save The Legacy by Testament and The Sham Mirrors by Arcturus. Indeed, I'd say that with this album At the Gates invented pop death metal, which is no mean feat.

I don't recommend this if you require your metal to be extremely technical (Opeth) or experimental (Ephel Duath) nor if you prefer it so raw that it sounds like it was recorded in bear's cave in some Scandinavian forest (Burzum, Leviathan) or so brutal that it makes you're eardrums bleed (Pig Destroyer). But if you like metal and you like good conventional rock songwriting, this is a treat.

4 out of 5 stars Death Metal Classic .......2005-12-17

On their final album At The Gates sound a bit more polished and slicker than on previous albums. I don't know whether they were aiming for a larger mainstream audience, but don't expect the hideous betrayal that Slayer and Metallica made. Slaughter Of The Soul, although a bit more polished, still pulverises almost anything in the 90s metal scene. This is one of the finest death metal albums ever made. Surprisingly they quit after this album, but the fact that they only released 4 albums really contributes to their legend. They never released a poor album! There aren't many bands that can say the same. Instead of the boring atonal, dissonant American death (Morbid Angel, Deicide), At The Gates boasts a very rich melodic sound, inspired by classical music. The highlights on this album are the awesome first 4 tracks, but the quality remains high all the way through. Production is good; very clear sound. All in all, one of the best death metal albums I have ever heard, although I still prefer With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness and Terminal Spirit Disease over this one.

Hadn't really heard of this band till recently. Don't get me wrong, I love In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, but I'd been looking for somthing more brutal and fast while still retaining a melodic quality. This is it!!!! Addictively melodic riffs and crushing brutality galore!! Vocals are piercing and emotional. On occasion the drums are repetitive, but that's hardly noticable when everything else is this insane! Not many other albums can even compare these days, although Dimension Zero's: Silent Night Fever comes close. If you dont already have it, go and buy this album right now.

3 out of 5 stars A piece of history.......2006-06-03

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

1 out of 5 stars A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Classic now.......2007-07-18

If you bought this in 1995 when it came out and listened to it, your jaw would have dropped. The bands in the last decade you refer too based their music off these guys, Dark Tranquility and others.. If you hear this today, you will say what was said. That is why this is a classic. Start with Grotesque and listen to the At the Gates alblums all in order and hear them progress and learn together. The two brothers play together rather well and the drums are very innovative for the time it was recorded. Vocals still remain modern and relevant 15+ years later.

5 out of 5 stars Come on now Rob.......2007-03-18

Judging from your review is sounds as though you think ATG took after Soilwork and CoB. You must know that this album was released two years Before Soilwork's: Steelbath Suicide and CoB's: Something Wild. ATG paved the way for bands like Soilwork, and continue to have an impact on extreme metal more than 10 years they disbanded.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing I've never heard before........2007-01-05

I bought this on a whim. I had no real expectations so naturally im not dissapointed. Its not horrible and it is worthy of entering my music library. I just wasent that impressed with it. To me it sounds similar to the latest Children of Bodom album and some of the earlier works of Soilwork.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Melodeath Album!.......2006-08-28

If you've ever been interested in the genre of melodic death metal, then this is the album that you really have to look into. This band, along with In Flames, are the fathers of the genre and "Slaughter Of The Soul" is their finest hour. It makes one wonder why the band broke up after creating one of the most influential pieces of heavy metal ever. Just about every metalcore band is ripping off these songs. There isn't a single weak song on here.

5 out of 5 stars The band that most metalcore bands try to be........2006-07-22

The majority of metalcore bands stole their sound from this CD. This CD is a classic in the field of melodic death metal. The guitar solos are nice and technical, the riffs are killer, and the vocals are awesome. Too bad most of the metalcore bands stole their sound and made it all mainstream. This band broke up before the metalcore surge. If you want metal that is fast yet melodic, this CD is for you.

Black Caesar is good but this soundtrack is MUCH better! "Brother Rapp," "Slaughter's Theme," and "People Get Up..." are all excellent. The instrumentals are all equally good. This has the horn heavy sound that is the trademark of 70's JB's. Two songs, "Happy for the Poor" and "Straight Ahead" can be found on other cds albeit in different versions. The instrumental "Straight Ahead" is the same as "Someone" from the "Hell" cd. All killer no filler. Highly recommended.

Fila Phil's 2nd album "Da Hustla Returns" is what got me into rap music! I was asked by a then good friend to recover his CDs from his cousin, so I picked them up and throw what I then called ("Rap-Crap") into the CD changer and I fell in love with the energy that was coming off "Da Hustla Returns". Great music, I actually own both the 1994 and 1996 CDs (Original). Incidently, my then friend needed me to recover his CDs because he had been thrown into Juvi for, YOU GUEESED IT, Kickin' in doors! I imagine he took Fila Phil's music literally. lol

This is a bounce cd the came out in the early 90's and was a hit with because of the song where my hutlas at? The rest of the cd isntt to bad.He has a flow which is a singing and rapping style that sounds like nelly. "were my huslas at?"s the only reason i brought the cd. That song is super crunk. Down load it off the internet or somthing. You have to hear it. Also the cd is about 7 or 8 songs, it could of been longer and some of the songs sound a lil dated now.

So here we have it once more the notorious "Slaughter of the soul". Beeing one of the most defining albums of swedish death metal, this album is kind of a must have for any metalhead worth the respect. When i first heard this album(that beeing the original version) i was amazed about the effect, of the songs beeing so short and intense. The second thing hat surprized me was when i first got through the album, i was as eager as ever to hear it once more. Because all the way through it it NEVER had one dull second. It was simply a killer album, that blew me away. The album variation was very good with some mood enhancing interludes mixed in between the songs. In all the original album was made of the finest of the rwaw intense and brutality you would expect from only the finest within the genre.
Years passed and one day i stumbled across the album once more(i really wonder what keept me from buying it all this time) in a limited edition version with these 6 bonus tracks. Consisting of the amazingly extreme "captor of sin"(Slayer cover), the nice litle "Bister verkligheit"(No Security cover). 2 demo tracks(Unto otheres and sicide nation) beeing even faster and even more furious than the album versions, adding a good deal more to the allready great album. Then again we have an outtake from the album sessions named "the dying", beeing a classic At the Gates track it also adds some more flavour along with the last bonustrack called Legion.
the only thing standing between this expanded version and the ultimate rating is that, allthough good the bonustracks simply ruins the big picture of the original album. Making it allmost impossible tho listen trough the album ande the bonus tracks.
In my opinion the bonustracks would benefit more on a seperate disc.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Fred Wesley / JB Soundtrack Collaboration.......2000-10-22

Issac Hayes had SHAFT, Curtis had SUPERFLY, Edwin Starr got HELL UP IN HARLEM, JB got BLACK CEASAR (Hell Up In Harlem, Pt. 1) and Slaughter's Big Rip Off.

If you like Fred Wesley and The JBs and James Brown's albums circa THE PAYBACK this album is a must have. The film ain't too bad either (if you're into Black Action films). Brother Rapp, the Jazzy Transmogripfication prominantly featuring Fred Wesley and People Get Up And Drive Your Funky soul are JB classics ! Lyn Collins "The Female Preacher" (of "It Takes Two To Make A Thing Go Right" fame) is also in it.

Check out the James Brown's FUNKY PEOPLE (1, 2 and 3) series if you like this stuff ! Also check out REALITY and HELL, two other classic JB albums of that particular era, plus FRED WESLEY AND THE J.B.'s Breakin' Bread !
