Skid Row distinguished themselves from the legions of pop-metal bands of the late '80s and early '90s chiefly by their attitude, which was closer to Guns N' Roses than to Bon Jovi. They're also distinctive these days, mainly because they're still around. Though their debut is the most radio-friendly and least musically mature of their albums, it does have some excellent songs on it, including the slow but edgy "18 and Life" and the anthem (every metal album must have one) "Youth Gone Wild". Musical talent and vocalist Sebastian Bach's over-the-top delivery made this band stand out from the crowd, although these days the material on this album does sound dated. -- Genevieve WilliamsCustomer Reviews:

One tasty slab of hot air.......2007-04-18
Going into specifics is beside the point. This is an album that should be taken in it's entirety and as such it represents a hell of a party. Motormouth frontman Bach is in fine fettle, his infectious personality and blazing set of pipes cutting a swathe through the solid rawk rock provided by the guys.
Some critics did point out that much of this product was fairly, well, full of hot air. And that's tru to a certain extent. But compare this to stuff like Ratt, another dependable act of the time, or Warrant even? In relation to Ratt, this disc has huge 'X' factor that commands attention with it's great hooks and personality. Regarding the latter named hair band, well the full bodied attack and the full on assault and the psychologically haunting aspects of this album like the lyrics to 18 and Life means that posers like Warrant are blown away. This album scored five stars in Metal hammer upon it's release by then editor Chris Welch, who was nobodies fool.
My honest advice is that while this is not a flawless record it is a fine, fine hard rock record with weight and delicious sneer. So pick it up - heck it's cheap enough so why not take the plunge!

Respekt.......2007-04-11
rather than go through a track by track synopsis for this release I'll cherry pick a few tracks and discuss them.
Monkey business - Excellent metal, excellent. From a brooding intro to a blazing metalfest led by a visceral Bach this is top notch metal no matter what era you grew up in.
Slave to the Grind - Probably the heaviest musical track recorded by Skid Row. Not my cup of tea but certainly a heavy duty attack. Add silly grunt/gargled vocals and you've got a metalcore song!
Quicksand Jesus - One of the three disturbing ballads on display here. Playing this track followed by In A Darkened Room and Wasted Time in an unlit room is something only to be done by experts. Just make sure you don't have any sharp objects close to hand...
Get the **** Out - The only really whimsical track here and a welcome relief. The only track here that could easily be imagined slotting onto the debut. Which makes sense as it was first played live at the Hordern Pavilion, Sydney Australia on the bands tour to promote the debut, so was perhaps the first tune written for this album.
Mudkicker - After Monkey Business this is probably my favourite of the metallic tunes, psychologically driven along a regular theme with the passion of the bands attack.
This album is a classin and the fact that it's not regarded as such appears to be due to the way the band are preceived in hindsight due to their breakup/disintegration. And perhaps because of hte bands image prior to this release. But if your not sure about buying a disc by Skid Row then ditch your worries and pick this up now.
Greatest Album Ever.......2006-10-05
Bachs voice is extraordinary and he really unleashes his full fury on this album. This ain't "hair-metal", its heavy metal, and if you love heavy metal, then you'll love this album.
Rocks with controlled abandon.......2006-06-29
If this doesn't get you moving, check your pulse..........2006-05-14
Guns n' Roses and Skid Row were by far and away my two favorite bands during the late 80s/early 90s. In truth, Skid was a distant second, but second nontheless. They toured together in the summer of 1992 and I got the chance to see them when they came to my hometown. Wow! What a show. I had their first one and was expecting more "18 and life", and "I remember you" type stuff. "In a Darkened Room", "Quicksand Jesus", and "Wasted Time" are in that same mold. But, the rest of this disc is heavy metal at its absolute finest.
"Monkey Business", "Slave to the Grind", "Living on a Chain Gang", and "Mudkicker" are some of the heaviest and best songs ever recorded. Heavy doesn't always make it good. Hard rocking doesn't always make it heavy. But it all comes together - completely together - on Slave to the Grind. What these guys did on this disc is absolutely amazing. This is no doubt a timeless classic.
Definitely NOT 'WASTED TIME'.......2006-04-27
Solid second effort from the guys - can't miss it!

Will have you Beating Yourself Blind!.......2007-06-24
1. Youth Gone Wild - This is how to begin an album! Heavy guitars, powerful vocals, and a message that being a youth is all in your heart and you CAN stay young forever! A true rocking anthem that will have you banging your head with madness! 5/5
2. 18 and Life - many people may know this song very well. One of the bands biggest and best hits. A great song with a great, dark and sad story. Seems to be a bit of Ricky inside us all! 4/5
3. Piece of Me - Right back into the heavy rocking non-stop action that we know Skid Row for. I wasn't a big fan of this song at first but it does grow on you. Great song when performed live as well. 4/5
4. I Remember You - This is usually the song that everyone knows and associates Skid Row with. The ballad of the album, the band, and perhaps even the ballad of the decade! The vocals are strong yet peaceful, and the guitar work is perfectly matched with the harmony of the tune as well. 4.5/5
5. The Threat - This song I find to be very much like "Piece of Me." Again this is a song that didn't grab me right away but has grown on me with time. Hard and heavy hitting off the heels of the ballad. 4/5
6. Psycho Love - Again, might take a couple of listens to really enjoy, but this definetly is a pretty rocking song! Powerful vocals and awesome guitar work by the man Rachael Bolan! In the linear notes the band states they are still waiting for a movie to be made from this song! Pretty cool idea! 4/5
7. Monkey Business - One of my favorite tracks on the album! Starts slow and soft, then picks up very hard and heavy when you least expect it. Very powerful and strong vocals here! Saw it performed live at a concert, and live on SNL before and each time it rocked the house. So much energy here its undeniable. 5/5
8. Quicksand Jesus - I would catergorize this song as a semi-ballad. Stars slow and soft, picks up to slightly heavy, then fluctuates between the two. Awesome song that shows the raw emotion the band members were feeling at the time. Good message with a good hook. 5/5
9. Slave To The Grind - The hit single that many remember Skid Row for; besides "I Remeber You." The song itself has the basic hook, basic guitar playing, and even basic vocals. One thing though, it has an undeniable message much like "Youth Gone Wild." Overall, this song deserved to be the hit it was. 4.5/5
10. Into Another {Remix} - A pretty cool version of this song. Again on the semi-soft side, but it shows that the band does have emotions. Excellent harmonizing in the song as well with stand-out drum work. 4/5
11. Frozen (Demo 1994) - In my opinion, the weakest song on the album. That of course isn't saying much as it was a demo version. Had potential, but seemed a bit cluttered and out of place on this album. 3/5
12. My Enemy {Remix} - After a few listens, this song is pretty rocking. Not to heavy, but definetly not soft. Excellent guitar work, and Sebastian doesn't over-do the vocals at all. 4/5
13. Breakin' Down {Remix} - In my opinion this is the lost gem, not only on this album, but compared to thier other ballad, this one stands well on its own! Yes, its a ballad, but an awesome one at that. Again, one can hear the true emotions going into the song and that makes it all the more real. Do not under-estimate this song! 5/5
14. Beat Yourself Blind [Live] - This song picks the tempo right back up! A classic raw, live performance that truly shows the energy that the entire band has. It doesn't however do any justice in showing just how insane Sebastian Bach is on stage! Awesome rock anthem! 5/5
15. Forever {1988 Previously UnReleased} - This is another song that shouldn't be under-estimated. A song that was previously unreleased but I am glad it was put on this album! It shows the early days and early beginnings of this hard rocking band. 4/5
16. Fire In The Hole (Demo 1991) - Another rocking jam that was previously unreleased. Just a pure rocking track and a great way to end a rocking album! Hard and heavy with the quintessential Skid Row attitude! 4.5/5
Overall, this album is great for the casual fan that wants to get to know the band back in their prime! Worth the price and will get you hooked to one of the best hard rock bands of the late 80's and early 90's.

Album Description
The twelve new songs on Revolutions Per Minute see Skid Row pulling out all the stops. Bolan, Hill and Sabo play their guitars with a vengeance, firing off power chords by the second, turning their amps to the max and apparently knowing but one direction: straight ahead! Whether on the hook-oriented opener, Disease, the aggressive Another Dick In The System, the catchy White Trash or the programmatic Shut Up Baby, I Love You - their unadulterated vitality seems to practically jump at the listener. The two string magicians expertly throw the bait to vocalist Johnny Solinger, who skilfully elaborates on the theme, refining the material further. Like his predecessor, Solinger pulls all the compositional strings, the material is constructed around him, he is at the epicentre of a soundquake that comes at the audience with full force. It is the power of a track named Strength that marks Skid Row in general and Revolutions Per Minute in particular. And it is the close attachment of the five band members to their home country that continues to shine through and that Skid Row express on their country rock number, You Lie.Customer Reviews:
Still skid row.......2007-08-02
Definetely Different.......2007-07-01
Nice!.......2007-05-15
ehh- not bad, not great.......2007-05-12
Skid Row's debut album with Singer Johnny Solinger "Thickskin" (2003) may not have been a great album, but it was a decent enough effort. While Bolan's songwriting wasn't bad, the bands attempt to modernize their sound left something to be desired, as the band sounded more like the Goo Goo Dolls than Skid Row. And as if an 80s metal band trying to sound like a mid 90s alternative-pop band wasn't bad enough, newcomer Solinger came off as faceless and bland, a far cry from the charismatic Sebastian Bach.
Returning three years later, Skid Row's second offering with Solinger is about as good as the first; which means that "Revolutions Per Minute" (2006) is an okay-but-not great album. The good news is the band rocks a little harder and sounds a little tighter. The Goo Goo Dolls type alt.rock has been left behind in favor of a more rocking album. Solinger, perhaps more confident, has stepped out of Bach's shadow a bit, as he comes across as less generic than he did on "Thickskin."
The bad news, however, is that the album just isn't that great. It doesn't suck; it's mostly enjoyable and listenable, but great songs, like "Monkey Business" and "I Remember You" just aren't there. Most of the songs, like "Disease," "Another Dick in the System," "Love is Dead," etc. are very average. You can listen to them once and enjoy them, but you soon forget them. Ironically, and sadly, the band sounds best when they are trend-hopping. The two standouts, the pop-punky "Strength" and "Nothing," seriously border Good Charlotte/Blink 182 territory, but are well-written and memorable none-the-less. Unfortunately, the album is weighed down by the awful "White Trash" and the rock-a-billy "You Lie." Imagine Larry the Cable Guy fronting a rock band on a bad SNL skit, and that's what you get.
To be blunt, Bolan may write the songs, but the band needs Bach. It's Bach's signature voice and strong melodies that helped make vintage Skid Row great, and without him Skid Row has limped-on ever since. Plus, there is no-way that Bach would have sang on most of these songs as he is smart enough to know mediocrity when he hears it. Bach's solo material (heard on his recent tour as well as 1998's "Bring `Em Bach Alive") blows Solinger-era Skid Row out of the water.
The Bach-factor aside, the band just isn't as good musically as they once were. The totally underrated "Subhuman Race" (1995) saw some real creativity and solid songwriting. By contrast, Skid Row's last two albums have seen a once promising band digress, half rehashing past glories and half embracing trends that are already five-years passé. I guess by 2012 it will be time for Skid Row to make an emo album.
If you are a big fan of Skid Row, check "Revolutions Per Minute" out; as there are a few stand-out songs and the album, overall, is an enjoyable, if unmemorable listen. That said, the album is far from the band's best work and casual fans are advised to stick with the band's first three Bach-era albums.
Skid Row going down fast!!!!.......2007-04-16
They used to have an anthem songs and hits like "I remember you", "Youth Gone Wild", "Slave to the Grind", "Monkey Business", "My enemy", "Into another", "Breakin' Down", and so many more... but all gone now.
Solinger is nothing compared to Bach, and if you listen carefully to most of the songs, it was like that Solinger trying so hard to sound like Bach. The drummer also poor, very poor, the guy playing (I don't even remember his name) looks like a junkie with no spirit to live. Rob's playing is much better than you, man!!
Only 1 song that a little bit worth hearing is "Disease". The rest is like the band trying to be badboys with dirty lyrics, but that's not the Skid Row I used to know. My advice for the band management is recruit back Bach

Boosters of Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach may not find this 1998 CD to be a truly objective best-of Skid Row. The 16-song disc, compiled by bassist Rachel Bolan after Bach's departure from the band, leans toward Bolan-penned hits, leaving out a couple of the band's best in the Bach tunes "Wasted Time" and "In a Darkened Room." For a casual fan, though, the expected trademark anthems, including "Youth Gone Wild," "18 and Life," and the bass-heavy "Piece of Me," are there, as are the beautifully produced power ballad "I Remember You" and requisite rockers "Monkey Business" and "Slave to the Grind." A demo, remixes, and a live track included here may be interesting to the faithful, though they also highlight the biases that color the song selections. The previously unreleased 1988 rocker "Forever," however, is a rarity worth having. --Katherine TurmanCustomer Reviews:
Half of an awesome record.......2007-04-11
But the release of what purports to be the hard rock cum metallers most killer cuts is effectively hobbled by the track listing. The first ten tracks rip righteously. Youth Gone Wild, Monkey Business, Slave to the Grind etc are all present and accounted for. But criminally none of the towering tryptich of disturbing ballads of the Slave to the Grind album are here - no Wasted Time, In A Darkened Room or Quicksand Jesus. It's not like these were obscure tracks - they were singles with videos done for them - you'd expect a bands singles to be on their 'best of' wouldn't you?!?
The other major problem found herein is the seven odds 'n' sods tracks. There are uneventful/rubbish remix or demo versions of songs plus a live take of Been Yourself Blind from the Subhuman Race album. Now it's pretty good, by why not put stuff like that onto the Jap EP Subhuman Beings on tour EP and make a full live album? Of course we get a couple of unreleased toons - a demo from the Slave to the Grind sessions pluse a number from '88 - Forever. The point is nothing here adds anything to the story of Skid Row and takes up the room that should of been given to their actual great tracks.
This album scores three stars for the first 9 tracks (OK - the unreleased Forever is pretty cool in a numbskull teenyrocker way) but what frustrates me is how awesom this collection could of been if it was a genuine best of. Which this band so thoroughly deserve. Now 16 tracks of their best numbers - THAT collection would score five stars with no dramas at all.

In the three years between Skid Row's rarities compilation B-Sides Ourselves--four years if you're counting from their last real studio album, 1991's Slave to the Grind--and Subhuman Race, the world turned its attention away from hair metal and toward hip-hop, grunge, and a harder, faster, louder brand of thrash metal. Which is too bad, because Subhuman Race is the best album of the group's career, forgoing the pop-metal sheen of earlier hits such as "18 and Life" and "I Remember You" in favor of a tougher sound that matches the tenor of the times. Tracks such as "Bonehead," "Beat Yourself Blind," and the title track mix razor-sharp guitar lines, grinding rhythms, and Sebastian Bach's stinging shriek, keeping the emphasis squarely on the music, as opposed to Bach's once-misanthropic ways. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:
Solid, if forgotten, metal blast.......2007-04-11
But bugger the mainstream - this rocked! A mature slice of corporate metal still with Bachs trademark pipes soaring and growling their way through tunes that had more in common with Slave to the Grind than the debut. Which is as you'd expect. Heavy rockers abound here as hard riffing is the order of the day, personal faves bein the lead cut My Enemy, the title track and Medicine Jar. That's not to deny the impassioned Bach efforts on Frozen or Beat Yourself Blind. And the band weren't above a few gimmicks, such as the single Breakin' Down being issued in two versions, effectively trying to double sales for the single. But hey, Maiden relentlessly issue all sorts of versions of everything to siphon the last cent (or pence) from their fans wallets and let's not even start on KISS! So I can forgive 'em and really this solid metal outing should of sufficed to silence critics and to ensure the bands survival.
Other tidbits you may find helpful in making your choice would be A) bob Rock production, B) nifty foldout packaging on the initial pressing and C) a defiant will to win. Though to be fair, reasons not to buy this would be A) not quite the kill factor of Slave to the Grind, B) knowing the band were disintegrating from within - yeah it's a downer and C) the absence of chilling slower numbers - there is nothing approaching In A Darkened Room, Wasted Time or Quicksand Jesus.
Still, recommended metal.

In my humble opinion, this album could go toe to toe with any of Metallica's releases in recent times and even thrash them out of the water while reminding Metallica that the term "Heavy Metal" starts with the word "HEAVY".
In my opinion, after this album; it is truly unfair to continue to describe Skid Row using bands such as Warrant, Mr. Big, Poison or other `80s hair or glam bands as references.
