PJ Harvey does her best work naked. For all the tantalizing changes in direction over the past 15 years, it was the British songwriter's barebones disc, Rid of Me (and its raw companion piece, 4-Track Demos), that made the greatest impression. These recordings from the late John Peel's celebrated BBC Radio show see her returning time and again to her basic blues roots, offering delightfully bruised takes on both early classics like "Sheela-Na-Gig," from her first performance on the show, through "You Come Through," a track that was recorded at a tribute shortly after Peel's passing. Along the way, there are plenty of rarities, stylistic diversions, and traces of dark humor to make Harvey fans wish the package could have been twice as long. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars interesting.......2007-05-26

PJ Harvey has been one of the most interesting musicians of the past 15 years. The records have been hit or miss. But there have always been great songs. John Peel was an early enthusiast. Remember when Polly Harvey came on the scene, we were recovering from heavy metal, rap, and rave, and just at the beginning of grunge. This is probably the greatest female music done after Patti Smith and The Pretenders. There are early bits like "Oh My Love" and "Victory" from 1991. Some stuff she did with John Parrish. Not a lot of hits here. A few cover songs. One by Willie Dixon. PJ Harvey has a lot of records out there. This is another one for the pile. More a tribute to John Peel than a showcase for rare tracks. Pretty good anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Great addition for PJ fan........2007-01-09

While most of the songs on the disc are available on PJ's back catalog, this collection gives you a nice sample of live developement of her work. The standouts for me were the somewhat rare tracks like "Naked Cousin" and "That Was My Veil." Not to mention a really cool version of Willie Dixon's "Wang Dang Doodle." Most of these songs should be well known to devoted fans but for you newbies, it's a good selection of her art and poetry. Always great!

5 out of 5 stars In All Her Glory.......2007-01-02

The waif with the mouth that roars, P.J. Harvey is both the thinking person's feminist, and a smash-mouth rock and roller. In my book, that makes her one of the most exhilarating performers on the planet.

This cd nicely recaps P.J.'s career, with tracks from her debut, "Dry"and most of her projects since then, with the exception of "To Bring You My Love" and "Is This Desire?". All songs were drawn from performances produced by John Peel for the BBC, which gives them a slightly different luster, and a rock solid punch.

P.J.'s songs can be described as little expressionist dramas writ large in black and white, and wonderful balancing acts of dynamics and minimalist sound. She sometimes combines huge shards of grunge rock with absurdist lyrics. Check out "Naked Cousin" , an off-the-wall ditty that paints a picture of a Bacchanalian madman running through the fields in abandon. Sounds weird? Well, it ROCKS like crazy. Her Rainer Ptacek cover, "Losing Ground" is another delight, matching switchblade edginess with Captain Beefheart dissonance. The best track from "Dance Hall at Louse Point"--"That Was My Veil" , is here, along with the prettiest song from "Stories From the City..."("Beautiful Feeling") . The album closes with "You Come Through" done beautifully and sincerely as a tribute to the late John Peel.

This cd is sure to please longtime P.J. fans, and it's a good sampler for the uninitiated.

Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars From Then To Now........2006-11-16

Fantastic collection of songs from her back catalogue. You can get all the sessions through trawling the web, but this distills all the songs in a nice neat package. If you enjoy her, you'll enjoy this. A great tribute for PJ Harvey and John Peel.

5 out of 5 stars Quite good.......2006-11-13

If you like PJ Harvey, this is quite an essential collection of sessions she did with the late John Peel between 1991 and 2004.The Cd is very simlpy packaged with a hand-written note by PJ Harvey on the inside that is quite nice as a tribute to the man Peel.Musically it is also quite exceptional. The spound quality is of course very good with that slightly rough quality that all these radio session records have. There is also that typical live-in the studio feel that has a little bit of everything to it and PJ Harvey' s style is quite suited to it.

3 out of 5 stars for completeists only.......2005-09-30

Of the two (soon to be 3) LPs and 3 EPs BOC has released, this is probably the last album of theirs you'd want to pick up. Why? every song on it is also on Music has the Right to Children. That's not to say this EP doesn't have has merit; two of the three songs on here are different from their LP selves.

Aquarius [Version 3] is a suberb song, but it isn't much different from the original version on 'Music has the Right'. They've added and subtracted a few layers here and there and the result is a version I'd say slightly edges out the original. The differences are really quite minimal though. Happy Cycling isn't one of my favorite songs of theirs. It rambles on a bit too long before finally collecting itself at the end. In any case, this version is identical to the one on 'Music has the Right'. Olson [Version 3] is where this EP earns its salt. The original was a really pretty 1 1/2 minute lead-in, which had been streched out by a minute and fleshed out into an actual song. It's easily the best track of the three, since it's essentially been reworked into a whole new piece.

If you have 'Music the Right to Children' you're basically spending $12 for a Olson ver 3 and a slightly better version of Aquarius. If you don't have it, spending a couple more bucks on MHTRTC will net you a version of every song on this EP plus 15 more tracks.

    4 out of 5 stars Tricky........2005-08-31

Short, yes, but very, very re-listenable. BoC are very easy to experience again and again, and nothing's different about this disc.

Aquarius almost(almost!) disappointed me. It seems to be reoughly the same thing (though this is to be expected from a Peel Session) having taken a step backwards and a step forwards. The added drums remove much of the ambiance of the piece, although they add their own "crunchy" flavor. A subtle reinterpretation of a great song, made for a different mood.

Olson is, always has been, and always will be incredible. They took a simple piece and completely changed the feeling. More Geogaddi like, calming and yet unnerving at the same time. Perhaps the best "new" thing on the CD.

Happy Cycling is the reason Olson is only the best "new" thing on the CD. It's one of the best things BoC has ever made, but if you've listened to Music has the Right, which most who buy this album will have, it won't seem new. It's the same thing.

XYZ, not listed on the tracklisting on Amazon for whatever reason, doesn't sound like you'd expect BoC to sound like. Very progressive, very drummy. Quite good. Worth a listen.

If you like BoC at all you should grab it. It has a little bit of everything they do.

5 out of 5 stars A complete masterpiece. The greatest Peel session ever........2004-11-27

This is undisputably the best John Peel session ever recorded. Words cannot express the sheer beuty of 'Aqaurius'. A sound akin to a quireboy on MDMA. Breathtakingly awesome stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Worth more then you might think.......2003-08-28

I have everything B of C have done and this is one of the best. They are at their most happy-sounding, almost giddy, with the first two tracks and then a meloncholy, gorgeous third track. The tracks flow together perfectly and it's impossible to listen to this and not feel slightly happier and in a better mood. It's minimal - short and sweet, if they put any more on it would ruin the effect.

You may not think it's worth it, but this is a really special record.
ok, this is a single with 3 tracks:
-Aquarius - a different and MUCH better version then on 'Music has the Right...'

-Happy Cycling - already on the american release of 'Music has the Right...'

-Olsen - see Aquarius. Almost a completely different track. Extremely beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars The best thing they've yet done.......2002-05-28

I really love this release. Short, yes, but it is very VERY good, the one CD of theirs which I play the most.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you John........2006-11-29

I think this double album is not only worthy for Pulp fans, but for anyone who loves music. Its value isn`t just musical, it`s also a tribute for beloved John Peel. The inner notes tell us how Jarvis will be eternally grateful with John for introducing him to music he might as well have never got to hear if it weren`t for his amazing contribution to music culture not only in the UK, but worldwide. As for the sessions...well, what can i say, i will obviously get carried away for my immense love for Pulp and Mr.Cocker`s amazing writing skills. One of the most important singers and songwriters of all time, paying homage to one of the greatest music personalities of all time.
And thanks John, cause if it wasn`t for you, maybe Jarv wouldn`t have been in touch with all these huge amount of great music, and inspiration would`ve eventually faded away.
    Thanks for everything.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars good EP.......2006-08-20

As others have noted, 2 of the 3 tracks are available elsewhere- Siva is on Gish, and Girl Named Sandoz is on Pisces Iscariot. Smiley is only available on this release (unless you can track down the Hut compilation "Year of the Spectacle"). However, since the whole CD is a "live studio" release recorded for the John Peel radio show, the version of Siva is different than the one on Gish (in some ways it's better than the Gish version), and can only be found on this disc. Not recommended for a first-time TSP buyer, but a definite must for any hardcore fan.

4 out of 5 stars If you own Pisces Iscariot not worth it........2006-01-04

Even though this is a great EP it isn't worth the price unless you must own every CD the Pumpkins have put out. All these songs & more are on full length & comparitively less expensive albums like Pisces Iscariot & Gish. Unless you must have it the differences are small.

5 out of 5 stars no, i'm not a kid, this is easier than logging in........2005-09-27

This is an outstanding 3-song ep comprising of the tracks the Smashing Pumpkins recorded for the John Peel radio show. Girl Named Sandoz was later added to the b-sides collection Pisces Iscariot, which is a must-by. But the real reason to buy this is the outstanding version of Siva and the otherwise unreleased Smiley. This version of Siva is rockin' and far eclipses the Gish version. It's tighter, heavier, and full of distortion. Billy's vocals are even a step up. So there you have it. If you are a dedicated Pumpkins fan, I highly suggest you get this. A superb addition to any Pumpkins collection.

      4 out of 5 stars smashing!.......2001-05-30

This is the tight set the Pumpkins played for John Peel's radio show. Awesome, plus you get "Smiley", unavailable anywhere else. Great song. If you find this anywhere, buy it. You won't be sorry, I promise.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for Smiley!.......1999-11-05

This CD will leave you wanting more, but for most Pumpkins fans who've already got Pisces and Gish, the only reason to buy it is Smiley - It's worth it. If you're not a hard-core Pumpkins fan and don't have Gish yet, buy Gish before this.

      5 out of 5 stars One-of-a-kind songwriting talent.......2005-05-17

I think I picked this up because I heard Sting realy liked Kevin Coyne. Anyway this record was the first Kevin Coyne record I encountered and I have implicitly trusted John Peel for years anyway (RIP). It became a strange soundtrack to some strange days in my life. I don't think that will translate into much interest for anyone else, but there are some well constructed and unique qualities to this music. It is eerie in places and bouyant in others; but there is a bouyancy to the eeriness and eeriness to the bouyancy. He just isn't doing something others have done. These songs can be noone elses.

I had long ago left th' faith healers for dead. All of their original catalog is out of print in the US. No sordid tales of addiction or bad behavior have made it to VH-1 or People magazine. Depressing.

So, news of the release of Peel Sessions immediately caught my eye. Finally, some "new" material from one of the best bands of the early 90's! I think they got a little lost in all the hype surrounding their Too Pure labelmates PJ Harvey and Stereolab and never got the attention they deserved.

This album contains four sessions recorded during 1992-1994. The band is in fine form and the sound quality is excellent. Overall, it's a little less drony than the albums--but the vocals are much more edgy and in-your-face. You even get some cool band pix and witty liner notes, written by singer Roxanne Stephen, in the booklet.

If you're new to TFH, this disc provides a good overview of their career. Completists will dig this for the two covers (Abba and Nilsson/Badfinger) and a big helping of unreleased songs.

All in all, very much worth picking up if you have any interest in TFH. One star deducted for leaving off their first Peel Session (part of the Too Pure Peel Sessions album).

5 out of 5 stars Most complete Peel Sessions package.......2007-05-24

This is the most complete package I've seen for any band that had sessions with John Peel. Grab it while there are still copies available, even if you have all of the other TWP Peel Session CDs. The live stuff is a fantastic way to round out the 6-CD set.

5 out of 5 stars I would never resent such a perfect Present........2007-04-03

I'm a huge fan of Peel Sessions. I have copies of Peel Sessions from everyone from The Smiths to Sonic Youth to The Field Mice to Motorcycle Boy. When I heard The Wedding Present was releasing their complete Peel Sessions recordings, I became ecstatic. Not only is some band putting out a comprehensive collection of their Peel Sessions, but it's a band I really like and already have one session of with the great John Peel, celebrating his 50th birthday on August 29, 1989.

This boxset is everything I expected from it. Great recordings that document an extensive history of a legendary band. Spanning over 95 tracks and 12 complete sessions, this is a must have for any fan of The Wedding Present and a perfect starting point for someone stumbling across this while searching for John Peel. Author Ken Garner provides great liner notes that will keep you entertained.

I only wish more bands would release their complete Peel Sessions much like The Wedding Present has.
