5 out of 5 stars Mr. Should Have Been Big.......2006-01-03

The band Mr. Big is full of some very talented musicians. Paul Gilbert of Racer X fame is one of the greatest (and fastest) guitar players of all time. Billy Sheehan, is considered the greatest bass player ever. The vocalist, Eric Martin, is a huge rock star in Japan. This album is full of 80s rock with amazing solos, cathcy lyrics, and power drills. Fans of Firehouse and Extreme will enjoy this excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Mr. Big.......2005-09-04

I would never picture how good this one sounds before I bought it. No crappy song in this CD, if you're a classic 90' rock digger.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect hard rock album.......2005-03-04

This is the perfect hard rock album. Seriously. There's something for everyone on this CD: love ballads that can be either depressing (Just Take My Heart) or hopeful (To Be With You); rock songs with pop influences (CDFF-Lucky This Time, Green-Tinted Sixties Mind); full-force hard rock tunes (Daddy, Brother, Lover...) - some of which have a bluesy edge to them (Alive and Kickin').

I'm going to comment on some of my favorite songs on the album:

Alive and Kickin' - this is probably my favorite song on the album. It's got a bluesy drive, although the emphasis is clearly on hard rock. It starts out with a short bluesy guitar solo that sets the tone for the song, and quickly progresses into the main riff, which remains dominant thru-out the majority of the song. In other words, this song keeps it simple and to the point.

CDFF-Lucky This Time - I am a big hard rock fan, so I will love anything that... rocks hard. This song mixes pop and rock very well - it reminds me a lot of Bon Jovi. Great vocal work by Eric Martin.

My Kinda Woman - guitarist Paul Gilbert originally wrote this riff for his rock / metal band, Racer X, but he let Mr. Big record it first. The song has a chugging riff that carries it along smoothly, and has a seemingly somber tone. The original title for this song (when it was written for Racer X) was Mad at the World, so that explains its musical mood.

Just Take My Heart - this song is about a relationship break-up. "Just take my heart when you go, I don't have a need for it anymore." As the lyrics suggest, the song has a sad tone, but it is captivating enough to hold your attention. As with Alive and Kickin', the tune starts with a guitar intro that sets the tone for the song and stays consistent to the end.

These are the songs that I feel best represent the album as a whole. An honerable mention goes to Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy. This song stays fast from top to bottom, and features Paul Gilbert on guitar and Billy Sheehan on bass playing their instruments in harmony with electric drills. You can't miss it.

4 out of 5 stars GUITAR LICKS for CHICKS.......2003-12-13

If you took away the hair and the posturing, Mr. Big would still be left with great instrumental and vocal skills. Their ability to write memorable pop/rock tunes is an added bonus. Due to that ability, this CD has probably managed to find it's way into the homes of the teenaged girls and the guitar freaks...WOW!

Bottom line for this album is great playing and singing coupled with some fairly strong songs.

Enjoy

3 out of 5 stars This one will do.......2003-02-10

If you have decided to get only one Mr. Big album (which is in fact a good decision since one is enough), this is the one to get.

It's decent hard rock typical for the time of its release. Many people seem to think Eric Martin is a great singer, well I don't... I even think he has a tendency to be boring in the long run and after hearing more than one Mr. Big album in a row you might even begin to hate the guy's voice... At least I tend to do!

4 out of 5 stars This album rocks.......2006-12-29

This album is straight ahead hard, sorta pop rock. Yes, a standard run of the mill review, but it's Eric Martin's unique voice that will grab you. Newer guitarist Richie Kotzen is surprisingly good. Definitely their best since 1993's Bump Ahead (BA would have been better with a better mix). Richie Zito (The Cult) probably had a lot to do with this album being well produced.

    1 out of 5 stars very disappointing.......2005-08-02

Promo says recorded by "Big Movie Orchestra" but it sounds more like a couple of synthesizers. The "strings" are OK but anything on brass or wind sounds AWFUL. Some tracks are not even on pitch. Seller would not refund, either - adding insult to injury! Now it's a handsome coaster for my desk!

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of songs from the underrated Mr. Big.......2005-03-24

Mr. Big is rock and pop at it's finest. This "Greatest Hits" package covers their best songs and all of those that made it to the FM airwaves. Why Mr. Big never hit the main-stream remains a mystery to me. Perhaps that is part of their appeal - Mr. Big was never overplayed - thus you never got tired of them or a particular song of theirs. Eric Martin (vocals), Paul Gilbert (original guitarist), Ritchie Kotzen (replacement guitarist), Billy Sheehan (bass), and Pat Torpey (drums)... these guys are all master craftsman with their instruments. Might I also add that Sheehan is a modern day God with the bass guitar. The band enjoyed some scattered hits (never a top 10 hit tho) and some moderate airplay on the hard rock FM airwaves. 16 tracks here with half of these tracks coming from their first two releases. Mr. Big's debut (1989) was raw and filled with energy - the opening cut, "Addicted To That Rush", is still one of my favorite rockers. Their 2nd release from 1991 ("Lean Into It") is easily their successful best and most complete album. 5 songs are taken from "Lean Into it" here including "Green Tinted Sixties Mind", "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy" and "Alive & Kickin'". "Bump Ahead" (1993) is probably their 3rd best album - with 3 songs featured here including the rocking in-yer-face "Colorado Bulldog". Only gripes with this "Greatest Hits" is that they included the sad remake of Cat Stevens' "Wild World", and a few personal favorites that are missing ("Electrified", "Rock & Roll", "Trapped In Toyland", "Lost In America", "Static"). Mr. Big started out much stronger and heavier in the early years of their career and then tailed off toward more radio friendly rock and power ballads. Overall a great package from Rhino from a sadly underrated rock band. If you own nothing from Mr. Big, this "Greatest Hits" package is a great place start... or with their best studio release "Lean Into It".

5 out of 5 stars Their best album!!!!.......2003-07-09

I remember first hearing about Paul Gilbert from a friend of mine way back in 1988 who had just been selected to attend GIT. Paul Gilbert was one of their prodigies and my friend Mike was anxious to get out there and make his mark. I remember hearing Mr Big for the first time on MTV's Hard 30 for all you metalheads out there and they ROCKED!!! Addicted to that rush was so much different from anything anybody was doing at the time except maybe for Damn Yankees, but those guys were already established musicians. Anyway I digress, Bump Ahead really showed me that these guys were more than just a flash in the pan. Sure "To Be With You" was a mega-hit, but Lean Into It had so much more going for it, especially the underrated "Voodoo Kiss" and "Green Tinted Sixties Mind". O especially loved the liner note on that one where the question was asked have you ever noticed how movies from the 60's have a greenish tint to them?
Bump Ahead has more depth and sincerity in the music, the singing, the playing and they finally let Billy Sheehan off his leash! Great album. I consider this to be their best effort. I wish the original lineup was still together making music because these guys were special. Ritchie Kotzen is a talented guitar player, but there just something between Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan that just fit perfectly.

    5 out of 5 stars Underrated--album and band.......2002-05-12

The problem with pop music--even when it comes to quality bands like this one--is that artists get defined by one big hit song. For Mr. Big, it was the ballad "To Be With You" off their previous album to this one. While that is a great song and album, this effort is about equally as good. The band stayed true to their sound while adding a few nice twists.

This band is not just a ballad band. Take the opening track on the album, the hard-rocking "Colorado Bulldog". Catchy, with a prominent bass line done by the great Billy Sheehan, this song kicks. Nearly as impressive is the next track--the uptempo, melodic "Price You Gotta Pay". The third track is the first ballad--the lovely "Promise Her The Moon", but that is followed by another mid-tempo rocker, the attitude-laced "What's It Gonna Be".

Next comes a cover that on the surface doesn't seem to fit but is actually very nicely done--"Wild World". The emotional way in which Eric Martin delivers it here brings a nice new twist to an old song. This was also the only top 40 charter on this album. Following is a mid-tempo but also melodic track--"Mr. Gone", which is followed by another true rocker in "The Whole World's Gonna Know".

Out of the final four tracks, two of them are ballads. "Nothing But Love" is pretty good, but "Ain't Seen Love Like That", which I remember getting a little radio airplay, is a bit better. The former is the track that gives me my one slight criticism of this album: the "one too many ballads syndrome". Both are still quality songs, though, and they are broken up by the catchy "Tempermental". The last track is another rocker of sorts, "Mr. Big". Further proof that these guys excel on more than ballads.

No one was giving these guys the time of day back when this album came out, as the Pearl Jams and Nirvanas of the world overshadowed all else. Nonetheless, this is a strongly-recommended listen for melodic rock fans and fans of '80s rock. Brief popularity aside, this band is far better than average musically--something that this album demonstrates.

    4 out of 5 stars Mr. Biggest?.......2000-12-09

As I said in my review of Aerosmith's "Pump", I always try to be a bit different to everyone else. For this reason, I am trying to find a reason to prefer this to Mr. Big's probable number 1 album, "Lean Into It". You know, I might just be able to find more than one.

Where Lean Into It perfected the sound the band started on their first album, Bump Ahead shows more progression. The sounds are beefier and fatter, with Billy Sheehan's bass playing taking more of a dominant role -- no bad thing when we are talking about the greatest rock bassist on the scene. The whole thing's heavier than "Lean Into It", and where that album seemed dominated by commercial AOR numbers, this one has its fair share of rockers. The ballads, and I love ballads, are of the usual high standard, and this is everything we've come to expect of Mr. Big -- non-stop quality. What else do you expect from such a flawless collection of musicians? They don't come much better than the afore-mentioned Sheehan and Paul Gilbert.

It's nice when a band isn't afraid to move forward. It's nice, too, when that forward motion leaves the fans pleased. Success for Mr. Big! Standout tracks... well, Colorado Bulldog, Mr. Gone, The Whole Word's Gonna Know, and Nothing But Love spring to mind, but I have to recommend this whole CD to you unreservedly.

So... just one question remains: Is it better than "Lean Into It"? Hmmm... I don't know... probably on a par. Different, but the better for it.

5 out of 5 stars Another Terribly Underrated Band.......2000-07-10

It's nice to see Mr. Big has released a new album with guitarist Ritchie Kotzen. It's called Get Over It, check it out here at amazon.com. If you like good melodious music written and performed by talented artists like Mr. Big, you will like it a lot.

As for 'Bump Ahead', it has everything. As another reviewer said, there is simply no one word to describe it. It's musical diversity really shows off the vast musical talent of the band and the wide vocal range of Eric Martin. It's kind of upsetting though, that this band never really got the respect they deserved. But now that some of the real bands from rock's golden era, the 1980's, have come back onto the scene with new albums (Poison, Motley Crue, Slaughter, etc.), maybe that injustice will finally be rectified.

    4 out of 5 stars Staying big..........2000-04-18

More speed, aggression, but also more melody, and even two covers showcase the full range of musical abilities of Paul Gilbert,Eric Martin,Billy Sheehan, and Pat Torpey. On the Free cover,'Mr.Big',Sheehan emerges as a very busy and upfront bass player-and this applies to most of the tracks on this album, revealing that the Mr.Big formula has more in common with the seventies as a musical approach, rather than the guitar driven eighties.

    I've got the original music (including v2 and v3), the books (the best is Heitland's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Book; still in print);
the 22 VHS tapes issued in the early 1990's (a haphazard collection issued in no particular order of episodes that boasted famous guest stars). Can I please get the whole series on DVD? I have not seen Mother Fear toying with Illya (The Children's Day Affair) in over 40 years.

5 out of 5 stars At LAST the complete series ORIGINAL soundtrack, the wait is over!.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

4 out of 5 stars Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

3 out of 5 stars It builds from here........2006-11-06

Looking over the other reviews caused me to think something is missing from the perspective. All the reviewers have different expectations from what I had when I first heard it. Supposedly the Mr.Big foursome were all hard rock demigods, but as a kid I had never heard of Racer X or David Lee Roth--I didn't know who Mr.Big was either! I've learned since then, but my first impression remains. My first impression was their album "Lean Into It."

If that sounds like you too, listen up.

I went back for this album after "Lean Into It" and "Bump Ahead." I couldn't get enough Mr.Big. You might say I was "Addicted to that Rush," and couldn't wait for the next one to come out, so I went in reverse. If you're thinking about buying this now, you're looking at this CD the same way I was.

The meat of this album is in the middle. 3-4-5-6 are what you've come to expect from Mr.Big. Merciless (the hot girl.) Had Enough (end of the line ballad--Eric is amazing!) Blame It... (devilmaycare rock&roll) Take a Walk (signature funky punch--awesome rhythm!)

Other than that, the leadoff song is a GREAT start...so aptly named for kicking off the Mr.Big career. #9 is very Eric Martenesque...an almost too slow ballad, but still hangs in there on a lonely night. Honestly, as much as I love this band, you can flush the rest of the CD.

If you're a fan, stop reading this review and buy the CD--this is not a debate when it costs less than $10!!! Otherwise, do what I did: start with the "train" and the "stoplight." If you're addicted then, come back for this one. You'll appreciate it more after you've acquired the taste.

4 out of 5 stars Great talent, good songs by Mr. Big.......2003-11-15

Mr. Big is a metal band that had the perfect recipe for success, rather than mere failure. Made up of 4 great musicians including vocalist Eric Martin, bassist Billy Sheehan, and axe master Paul Gilbert, this hair band never got quite as "big" as their name. It's a mystery why, because once you hear their songs, you'll think the same thing.

This album consists of some great songs including "Had Enough", a slow rocker with great musicianship overall. The ballad "Anything For You" targets your soul with the right blend of everything. And arguably the best track on this album "How Can You Do What You Do" is a heavy hitter with a great beat, and very similar to their other great song "Shadows" (not on this album). Mr. Big is all about magnificent guitar work, beat, bass, and of course incredible singing from E. Martin, which comes together to form a great array of songs in all their sets.

Mr Big is worth a listen. If you like bands such as Ratt, Def Leppard, Motley Crue etc. You'll love Mr Big.

3 out of 5 stars Didn't really care for it.......2003-11-10

Sorry, I didn't see what the big deal is. Seems sort of dated and second rate. Just personal preference - you may like it & that's ok.

5 out of 5 stars this is it.......2003-06-13

in '89 these guys came out with all guns blazing.a minimal of ballads(2)more chops here than a butcher shop.check out the out solo on "rock and roll over".the last great 80's band.after this they put out too many ballads.the talent here is undeniable.billy sheehan is from david lee roth's band and talas and whatever planet he comes from, they all play bass there.paul gilbert is probably the most underrated guitarists around and played in racer x.

    4 out of 5 stars Big enough..........2000-04-18

The expectations were great when the four superstars comprising this group united for their first album, yet they've failed to disappoint, creating something extremely musical, sounding big,a la Van Halen, even striking the right balance between virtuosity and accessibility, without sacrificing either. This first Mr.Big album is probably the heaviest of them all, leaving the listener thirsty for more.

    5 out of 5 stars The Great Gatsby's Music.......2007-05-05

Dean Mora and his group are a great favorite whenever they play downtown at the annual L.A. Conservancy's Grand Theater series every summer. You can just imagine what they must have heard at one time in these 1920's theaters. I have several of this group's CD's, and they set the mood when you want something different both at a party or in the background while driving long distances. My dad gave out half a dozen copies to his friends and they really liked it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band Performing Great Selections.......2002-02-26

Mora's Modern Rhymists have done a superb job with their presentation in this CD. The group is true to genre and top notch in quality and arrangement. This CD highlights that unique era when the hot jazz of the 1920's was evolving into Swing of the latter thirties. As a result, the selections include 20's elements like muted cornet/trumpet solos and Swing rhythms and instrument combinations. The result is a CD that will please fans of both eras. As one who generally prefers the music of the 20's to Swing, I thoroughly enjoyed this collection.

The musicians obviously had fun with the "almost" title track of the CD, "Mr. Ghost Goes To Town." The band does its best to imitate ghostly vocals. What a blast.

Kayre Morrison's vocals shine on the mellow, "Smoke Rings" as well as on the upbeat, "Aint'cha Got Music?" Jim Ziegler's vocals really do convince us that he is, "The Mayor of Alabam" and, "Four or Five Times" is a real treat. The eleven piece orchestra sounds very much together and full. Instrumental solos are exceptional. This group has it together. Go for it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Dancers.......2001-09-15

Mora's Modern Rhythmists play great music from the 1930s. I like this CD better than their first - not sure why. This CD is perfect for Balboa and Collegiate Shag dancers.

Please note that the list of songs on the Amazon.com website is incorrect. One of the other reviews mentions a number of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars The Rhythmists have got rhythm!.......2000-06-21

21 tracks of fabulous Hot Jazz/Swing! I hadn't hear the majority of these tunes and they really inspire me to explore the Jazz of the early 30's. I particularly enjoyed the bands take on Earl Hines' Cavernism. A bit slower that the original, but still full of energy! I also like 'King Of Swing' which was terrific fun. Georgia Jubilee is rather fast and full of pep. This band is really fast and energetic. Some lindy hoppers may have a little trouble keeping up, but the music really swings, so they won't care too much! It would be great to hear originals from this band in the future, in the spirit of the tunes on their current playlist. Fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Band Gets Even Better.......1999-06-29

Mora's Modern Rhythmists are back, with the second of their two CDs, "Mr. Rhythmist Goes to Town." If you thought that there was slim chance of this top-flight band besting their previous efforts on "My Favorite Band," get ready for a treat. These boys step lively on their new offering, serving up some of the most delectable pre-swing hot jazz ever put to record. And there's a plus: The addition of the fabulous Kayre Morrison, whose lilting, disciplined voice would have had Ulysses begging to be untied from the mast so he could succumb to his fate in sheerest ecstasy. More on this little lovely anon; now for a few words about the CD itself. The first thing to grab you is the cover graphics. They are superb. The grinning, bowler-hatted Mr. Rhythmist rising over the deco night skyline captures what this band exudes best: a sense of time-warped fun. Popular music in this country has been overweight with navel-gazing ponderousness for too, too long. (Editorial over.) By contrast, the gents in Dean Mora's crew are obviously enjoying themselves. The ghost noises on "Mr. Ghost Goes to Town" are strictly nuts, and Dean's exhortation at the end for the boys to break it up captures this band's well-rounded cohesiveness. This esprit de corps is more than refreshing. It's exhilarating. Very few attempts to revive this kind of music actually improve on the original. This band offers the rare exception. Several cuts are actually cleaner, tighter executions of the densely packed, complex arrangements than the surviving '30s recordings. An example is the band's romp through "Cavernism." The Alex Hill arrangement of this Earl Hines-Jimmy Mundy tune is taken at a less frenetic tempo than the original, and gives the soloists plenty of room. The tenor sax solo-presumably by Phil Krawzak-has a delightfully romping quality that suits the band beautifully. Equally successful is the band's easy swing through "Chant of the Weed." The seldom-heard Spud Murphy opus, "Dancing with a Debutante," streams down the road like a Chrysler Airflow (or flows like a Chrysler Airstream), propelled forward by some superb scoring for the sax section, with muted brass punctuation along the way. (You may find yourself wishing from time to time that there were a second trombone and a fourth sax to give section and ensemble passages greater richness, but this is mere caviling. And it wouldn't suit much of the band's book.) Bert Ambrose himself would have marveled at this band's take on "Night Ride." (Note to the Rhythmists: Record a version of "Hors d' Oeuvres" next!) The evergreen "Sweet Sue" gets a nice Pee Wee Hunt-ish vocal by Jim Zeigler, and thoughtfully sensitive treatment, something the band did well with "Night Wind" on their last CD. This latter would have been a perfect showcase for the vocal talents of Kayre Morrison, whose style deserves more than passing mention. Ms. Morrison is equally at home on up-tempo numbers and dreamy ballads if this CD is any hint. You will hear overtones of Broadway assurance in this lady's voice, with hints of Ramona Davies, Edythe Wright, and the great Elsie Carlisle. She possesses a fantastic vibrato, excellent range, and her phrasing on "Smoke Rings" could not be better. Unfortunately, this is the only ballad that she sings on this CD. It's too bad, because she has a voice that is sweet, clear, and even touching. Add to this her evidently excellent musical judgment and good taste, and it the result is a vocalist who can make strong men sob and write bad poetry. Whether this is her aim-or the band's-I am not informed. But I eagerly await this band's next CD so I can hear more of her. Somewhere out there, Joe Haymes, Gene Kardos, Ray Noble, Fred Rich, Glen Gray and Ozzie Nelson are smiling. Withal, this CD is a must-buy if you have any feeling for pre-swing '30s jazz.
