5 out of 5 stars Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

After decades of shoe-gazing angst and angry young musicians raging against one thing or another, it's often hard to remember that the original punk/new wave explosion of the late '70s was fueled as much by innocent abandon as anger. How much affection New York indie power-poppers Too Much Joy have for the likes of the Dickies, Circle Jerks, or Rezillos is debatable, but their flail versus wail quotient remains promising. This live album (recorded in Washington, D.C. in '97, and handpicked by the band as a representative favorite) takes more than its cheeky design cue from the Who's mock-bootleg Live at Leeds; it's filled with boundless energy, careening musical inertia, and a self-mocking irony that's as snotty as it is endearing--and they don't treat "Happy Jack" too shabbily, either. And if the oft loony 'tude of songs like the commercial mockeries "You Will" or "King of Beers," and deep ruminations like "I Believe in Something" or "The Kids Don't Understand" lie somewhere mid-south of They Might Be Giants' and Barenaked Ladies' furrowed brows, perhaps it's because TMJ realize big brains only hurt worse when you treat your head this carelessly. And how can you not like a band whose finale is an uplifting take of its own "Theme Song"? --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars horrible sound quality.......2004-01-16

i was a big fan of TMJ back in the day. still own the original "son of sam i am" and "cereal killers" cd's. but the sound quality on "live at least" is horrible. to equate, put in your favorite cd in your home stereo, turn up the volume to above average, and now put your hands over your ears. that's pretty much how this cd sounds... instruments are very muffled and flat, vocals do nothing but echo like they were performing in the grand canyon. this cd isn't worth $4.99, let alone $14.99. i wouldn't even recommend it to a hardcore TMJ fan.

5 out of 5 stars Wow........2003-02-02

I never heard of Too Much Joy. My roommate gave me the CD after he bought it by accident (trying to buy Live At Leeds! Idiot.). Anyway, he did me a major solid. It's simply amazing. Now I want to know all about them. And I wish they were still playing live. This Cd is just more fun than just about anything else that lives in my car. On the other hand, don't waste your money on the Wonderlick CD that comes paired with it. But Too Much Joy rocks bigtime.

4 out of 5 stars Joyful Chaos.......2002-04-01

While not as polished as their studio recordings, and not as polished as many other bands' live offerings, Too Much Joy's "Live At Least" captures the essence that made them great and woefully underrated. Amid the self-conscious stage patter, the missed cues and sometimes random sound mix, this recording offers some of the best of their insightful and playful lyrics, smart melodies and creative arrangements. Plus, it's about the only place left to get any versions at all of many of the songs, since the albums they originally appeared on have gone out of print.

If you have no Too Much Joy at all, buy "Finally," first. But once you've got that one, buy "Live At Least" to keep it company.

5 out of 5 stars As rocking as I remember them.......2002-01-05

Finally a Too Much Joy CD that captures the band the way I remember seeing them live. I only saw them once when someone dragged me along to see another band they were playing with that we've both long since stopped caring about but I was totally blown away. It's hard to put into words what was so amazing, they just were. It went beyond the playing and the singing and even the stage antics. It was like being a part of something special and secret. Unfortunately secret. Once we "discovered' them I naturally went back and found the records. I liked ...Finally the best but they all had something great. But nothing like what I saw that day. Naturally I had to buy their video but honestly that was really dissapointing. Thanks to Live At Least I at least now know it wasn't all in my head. They were at least sometimes the best band ever. This can't hope to be as amazing as being there but it's damn close. Even if this is your only introduction to TMJ you won't be disappointed. The only down side is it has me longing again to see them come to my town soon.

5 out of 5 stars Kicking yourself for never having seen them live??.......2001-12-20

As anyone who is a Too Much Joy fan will tell you, their live shows are something to see, and many times better (if that's possible) than what you get on any recorded medium. If you've seen their video, Dante's Disco Inferno (available at their sayhername website), and seen the live concert footage, then you know that this album is not to be missed. And if you haven't, then you must. Really. Would I lie? No. Not to you. Especially since the quality is crystal clear on this baby!

The essence of TMJ lies in the wit and intelligence of their lyrics, and the reflection in their music. This is heard in the banter between songs (well, maybe not intelligence), and presentation of their music. Especially when you get to hear covers and non-standards, such as Kicking, which I was delighted to find here.

So, if you somehow missed hearing TMJ live during their brilliant touring career, don't deny yourself the opportunity to catch one of the best shows I ever saw. The Bayou in Washington, DC (may it rest in peace) was a venue that highlighted TMJ at their finest. The size was perfect, the sound system pretty good, and the shows almost always sold to capacity. This show, as well as the show where the Secret Service showed up (due to an Ambassador's attendance), rank up there with the best ever. It was long, it was loud, and it was Too Much Joy.

I waited a long time to hear this show again in all it's unedited glory, and it was well worth it.
