At his best, as exemplified by his 1999 megahit "How Do You Like Me Now?!" Keith is simple and direct in the tradition of Hank Williams Jr.--aware of his limitations, able to thrive within them. "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" struck a chord, though it differed little from the fist-shaking morale-boosters of previous wars. On the downside, Keith's formulaic tendencies can become tiresome, as it did on "My List," a generic celebration of life's mundane treasures. Sales notwithstanding, "Beer for My Horses" was no artistic landmark for Keith or duet partner Willie Nelson. By contrast, he and daughter Krystal have fun with the 1963 Inez and Charlie Foxx R&B hit "Mockingbird" (first revived by James Taylor and Carly Simon). "Go With Her" injects a different spin into the time-honored breakup song, wittiness absent on the gimmicky "Stays in Mexico." Raucous live performances of "You Ain't Much Fun" and his debut hit, "Should've Been a Cowboy," reflect his ability to rouse the faithful into the obligatory singalong. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars Toby Keith's Greatest Hits 2.......2007-05-07

This one is my favorite Toby Keith CD. I like the others as well but I find I play Greatest Hits 2 more often.

5 out of 5 stars Keep them coming...Keith.......2007-04-16

I bought this Greatest Hits 2 because it has a lot of my favorite songs on it. My favorites are: "How Do You Like Me Now"; "I'm Just Talkin' About Tonight"; "I Wanna Talk About Me"; "Beer For My Horses" duet with Willie Nelson; "Mockingbird" duet with Krystal; "You Ain't Much Fun"; and "Should've Been a Cowboy". I also like "Stays in Mexico". I had to buy another CD to get my very favorite "Big Blue Note". All in all this CD was well worth the money. By the way, I am a 67 year old grandma that loves country western music.

Received CD in new, perfect condition. Received item before expected! Thank you so much!

5 out of 5 stars this man can sing his butt off........2007-03-08

with him mellow voice all the songs Toby sings; gives this woman the chrills; he is very nice looking. I think he is an easy going type guy; with the most wonderful voice...

5 out of 5 stars Now, I do like you good!!!.......2007-02-24

Smashing. A top-notch selection of up-to-date hits (How do you like me now?, Who's your daddy?), a memory trip with "Should've been a cowboy", some food for thought (My List), duets with Krystal and Willie Nelson (real duets and not just them singing in the back) and plain good old country pieces where Toby Keith gets to display his wry humor, raising that knowing smile that echoes better than a guffaw. In sum, if you were considering to get it, don't hesitate any longer. Do it! You will definitely not regret it. There are no weak spots in this CD.

These new recordings of mostly recent Gill compositions are the culmination of a project aimed at recording four distinct albums: rock, romance, vintage honky-tonk, and acoustic. The Rockin' Record, virtually perfect from start to finish, begins with "Workin' on a Big Chill," its swampy groove straight out of John Fogerty and a showcase for Gill's guitar virtuosity--a groove he resumes on "Cowboy Up," with cameo harmonies from Gretchen Wilson. "Sweet Thing" and a duet with Rodney Crowell on "Nothin' for a Broken Heart" pulsate with Chuck Berry intensity that contrasts with the solid, '60s Memphis groove of "Bet It All on You." The Reason Why showcases Gill's legendary ease with ballads, several of them enhanced by creative string arrangements by David Campbell (Beck's father), including "What You Don't Say" with LeAnn Rimes and "The Memory of You" with Trisha Yearwood. The stunning "Faint of Heart," a remarkably sultry jazz duet with Diana Krall, could become a standard. Some Things Never Get Old revisits classic fiddle-steel honky-tonk, music Gill has long reverenced and referenced. "This New Heartache" is straight out of Ray Price. Gill and Patty Loveless tear up "Out of My Mind" and Allison Krauss and Dan Tyminski join in for the waltz "I Can't Let Go." "Don't Pretend with Me" honors Ernest Tubb's honky-tonk primitivism. Little Brother, all-acoustic and often bluegrass-flavored, shines from beginning to end. Along with "Molly Brown," a stark cautionary about racial violence, Gill sings both "Cold Gray Light of Dawn" and "Give Me the Highway" with the Del McCoury Band. He and Guy Clark close it out with "Almost Home." Despite outstanding past efforts, Gill--one of the top hitmakers of the '90s--hasn't had a Top Ten single since 2000. No matter. His talents and the heart he puts into his writing, singing, and picking remain at their peak. This stellar collection proves it--four times over. --Rich Kienzle

Album Description

In an unmatched outpouring of virtuosity and energy, Vince Gill has created a 4-CD set of 43 new and original songs that MCA Records will release Oct. 17 under the title These Days. The collection is an artistic tour de force that displays Gill's mastery of lyrics and musical styles, ranging from traditional country and bluegrass to jazz and rock.

"I started looking at all these songs I had," the amiable superstar explains, "and going, `Shoot, I want to record that song, and I want to record that song.' I just kept checking with the other musicians to see if they were available. I had no deadlines, no rules or anything like that. So I just kept trying songs."

To accompany him on this ambitious undertaking, Gill turned both to artists he knew and had worked with before and to those whose music he admired at a distance. "I never try to fill up my records with famous people," Gill says. "I try to fill them up with the most talented people I can find on the face of the earth." By the time the project was completed, that group included Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Rodney Crowell, Phil Everly, the Del McCoury Band, Emmylou Harris, John Anderson, Lee Ann Womack, Jenny Gill, Amy Grant, LeAnn Rimes, Gretchen Wilson, Guy Clark, Trisha Yearwood, Bekka Bramlett, Michael McDonald, steel-guitar master Buddy Emmons and many other musical standouts.

Initially, Gill planned to pare down the songs he'd recorded to a single album. Then, in one of the studios he used, he spotted some Beatles memorabilia and recalled that the Fab Four had routinely released multiple albums within the same year.

Gill took the idea to Luke Lewis, Universal Music Group Nashville Co-Chairman, who totally supported his notion of multiple releases. In fact, Lewis came up with an even more radical strategy: he told Vince to go and record more songs that explore his passion for acoustic sounds and release a 4-CD set. And that's exactly what happened.

Gill co-produced These Days with famed keyboardist John Hobbs and sound engineering whiz Justin Niebank.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, what a collection of work.......2007-07-29

Prior to a few weeks ago I didn't know anything about Vince Gill's music beyond the few hits that I had heard on the radio. Then, my wife and I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert. Wow! I went out the next day and bought "These Days" and just about the only time I get disk 2 out of my CD player is to insert #3 or #4 (disk #1 is OK, but not so much my cup of tea). If you have any tinge of liking for country type music I don't see how you could not love this set. If you are already a fan of Vince you will not be dissapointed, and if you are a new fan like me you will wonder how you missed Vince for all this time. You will probably end up buying all of his earlier work as I am now doing. GREAT work and this guy is not just getting older, he is getting better.

4 out of 5 stars These Days ~ Vince Gill.......2007-07-07

A lot of the songs are vintage Vince Gill. His guitar playing is nothing short of spectacular. The duets are wonderful. His guest singers blend well with Vince's, oh so sweet, tenor. I love the album, but give it only four stars because so many of the songs are featured on albums I already own.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired by negative reviews.......2007-05-21

Before ordering this CD set, I read most of the reviews on Amazon. A couple of them were very negative. However, I just couldn't believe in a "bad" recording session from Vince Gill. Especially with the great stars who collaborated as guests on many of the cuts.

Well, the good news is the negative reports were just wrong. I like these CD's, there are four in the box set, more every time I listen to them. An excellent product and a great addition to any music collection that loves ballads, country, bluegrass, and yes: Vince!!

5 out of 5 stars These Days by Vince Gill.......2007-05-13

This item is a must buy for all Vince Gill fans. We purchased it after seeing in Vince in concert. The concert was great, but you can't have that all the time. His range as a musician is evident throughout this 4 CD set. Plus, the musicians he surrounds himself with make this a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Vince Gill - These Days.......2007-05-13

I'm a long time fan of Vince Gill but this album is his best. A must have for any Vince Gill fan!!

As a survey of Toby Keith's first four recordings (not including the seasonal Christmas to Christmas), this set turns in some strong singles, making the case for the Okie singer-songwriter as one of the more traditionally minded of the '90s hat acts. Keith rarely devastates as a singer, but he never overreaches, and there's more than a bit of grit in his delivery of "Should've Been a Cowboy" and "He Ain't Worth Missing." His emotional triumph remains the obsessive "Who's That Man," in which Keith sees another man living the life he threw away. Keith also includes two songs not available elsewhere, complementing an appealing mainstream country set. --Roy Kasten

it's a TOBY KEITH greatest hits; no reason but that to buy it; we love Toby

5 out of 5 stars It made me a fan.......2006-08-08

I puchased this Toby Keith album because I was given tickets to see him in concert and didn't know even one of his songs. I became a fan of Toby's soon after listening to this CD. Although he talks through a lot of "Getcha Some", it's become of my favorites out of the fourteen tracks. "You Ain't Much Fun" is an awesome song, even if the message isn't very considerate. This album is a great collection of country!

This is just a small sample of what he is capable of. There are a lot of great hits on this including "Dream Walkin" and "Should have been a cowboy". My favorite is "A little less talk and a lot more action". Definitely put this in your collection. It's worth it.

While Louisiana Hayride star Johnny Horton's 1956 Top 10 debut "Honky Tonk Man" strode the line between rockabilly and honky-tonk minimalism, he found his niche in 1959 with a short-lived phenomenon known as the saga song: newly penned tunes, based on or inspired by historical events. The song that rendered Horton immortal? A rousing rendition of folksinger Jimmie Driftwood's War of 1812 number "The Battle of New Orleans," which topped both the country and pop charts for weeks. Riding a winner, Horton kept the momentum going with the Civil War-themed "Johnny Reb," and "Sink the Bismarck," based on a World War II naval battle. He died in a Texas car crash in early November 1960, days before his next single, "North to Alaska" (from the John Wayne film of the same name), hit the charts. While saga tunes understandably dominate this collection, it also includes "Honky Tonk Man" and the ballads "Whispering Pines" and "The Mansion You Stole." There's no better introduction to Horton's seminal recordings. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars LIberal Democrat the Loves Real Country.......2007-05-21

The current generation probably doesn't realize that real country was anti-establishment. I loved Johnny Horton and Jimmey Dean (Remember his song PT-109 about "commie-pinko" Jack Kennedy, who acutally FOUGHT in a war?) when I was a kid. Songs about people with gumption-- not mindless clones whose goal in life is to be a religious/corporate lackeys. You have no idea what it is to be an American... although you think you do.

When I was younger, my father had a cassette with all of these songs on them, but my mother sold it in a garage sale. Of course I was upset when I looked for it years later, and I was so excited to find this CD! I remembered all the songs and still listen to it frequently. I couldn't be more satisfied.

How do you drum up interest in a Jerry Lee Lewis record, since the Ferriday Fireball is 71 and hasn't put out an album since 1996? First, you pair him with 22 of the biggest stars of rock (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards), country (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard), and blues (Buddy Guy, B.B. King), to show how he put his stamp on nearly every genre. Then, you hire the dean of music chroniclers, Peter Guralnick, to give the liner notes heft. And--oh, yes, you also make sure the piano-pounding pioneer displays the best finger form he's shown in 25 years. Throughout, the Killer crows, struts, and self-mythologizes with the brio of youth, and who could resist him? At times, one may question the wisdom of turning an obvious guitar tune (Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll") into a piano-dominated performance, just as it seems odd to not make the best use of such guests as Toby Keith or Delaney Bramlett. But Lewis never yields the throne for a second, even surrounded by the likes of Robbie Robertson, Neil Young, and Eric Clapton. For that reason, most of these aren't true duets--the star instrumentalists take their solos, and the harmonies of some of the most legendary vocalists (Don Henley, Little Richard) stay too far in the background. But when things really work--as they do with Bruce Springsteen (the rave-up "Pink Cadillac"), Neil Young (a crackling rendition of "You Don't Have To Go"), Kid Rock (an even blacker "Honky Tonk Woman"), George Jones (the novelty-framed "Don't Be Ashamed of Your Age"), and Kris Kristofferson (an especially poignant take on "The Pilgrim: Chapter 33"), the rock of ages cleaves for thee and me. Last Man Standing refers to the famous cover of Million Dollar Quartet, on which he's pictured with fellow Sun artists Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins, all now jamming in the great beyond. Yet in a spoken-word reprise at the end of the Kristofferson song--"From the rocking of the cradle / To the rolling of the hearse / The going up was worth the coming down"--the Last Man seems to suggest his own fine epitaph. It's hard to argue with a hellraiser extraordinaire. --Alanna Nash

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Man, that just blew my mind!.......2007-07-01

About 50 years ago, Sun Records was at the forefront of the beginning of rock and roll, with performers like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. The title of this CD refers to the fact that Jerry Lee Lewis is "the last man standing" among these Sun Records legends, which is pretty amazing when you consider that he probably led the wildest life of all of them. For this album, the 70something year old Killer performs duets with a bunch of other record stars. "Duets" is not quite an accurate description, though, since some guests just perform instruments and some guests sing what amounts to background vocals. But the real star here is of course Jerry Lee himself, who proves that he can still sing and pump the piano better than just about anybody. He handles rock, country and blues songs equally well. The duet partners were probably added to make the album more commercial, but they do manage to add something to the mix, since it gives the album more variety. I suspect that their presence also pushed Jerry Lee to do his best, since he wouldn't want to be outshined on his own album. The Killer can frequently be heard joking around with them, which adds to the fun of the album. This is probably the greatest rock and roll album every recorded by a senior citizen, and it puts to rest the lie that rock music is strictly for young people.

5 out of 5 stars It's about time!.......2007-05-28

Jerry Lee is one of the last surviving rock and roll pioneers and it is about time he rec'd some quality attention. I've seen him live, and man, oh, man, is he for real. The production on this project is good, the performances are good, the packaging is good, the song selection is good; this will definitely be a project that will add to his legacy. As with all of us, Father Time is catching up with the Killer, and my personal wish is that whoever was responsible for this project would have done it 10-15 years ago. It seems so many of the early rock and roll pioneers die without really having quality documentation (there is a good special featuring Carl Perkins, which shamefully had to be made in England because he was apparently appreciated more there, and of course Chuck Berry's "Hail, Hail, Rock and Rock" should be in every music lover's home). Now if we could only get new projects from Chuck Berry, or Little Richard, or Fats Domino!

This guy is an immortal. Some people are great forever. He is one.

4 out of 5 stars Age is Showing.......2007-05-15

It is painfully obvious that Jerry Lee isn't the "Killer" anymore, but I am still happy I have added this latest work to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2007-05-06

This is a great CD if you like the boogie woogie style paino. So many wonderful voices have paired up with Jerry for this one, you can't help but like some of the songs, and fortunately I liked them all. Perhaps my favorite is he with B.B. King--a wonderful piece. This is not a perfectly orchestrated CD, and the "soul" comes through.

    Album Description

The Derailers came along in the 90's with a hybrid of Bakersfield country and 60's rock and roll with the end results being astonishing. Big guitars and great songs made them stand out to both country and rock fans. This is music with grit and polish at the same time. Their albums should be essential listening to any music fan but the real treat is seeing them live. The Derailers take you to another dimension where you, the band and their music become one...they are that good!- Terry Currier, Music Millennium.

A former oil field worker, Toby Keith has always known how to capture the passions of blue-collar men and women, desperate to blow off steam at the end of the day. As such, he's stocked his latest album with themes designed to push all the right emotional buttons--patriotism, Jesus, buddy love, fast women, and reality altering substances. "I Love This Bar," the first single, offers a kinder, gentler Keith than the boot-shoving redneck of "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American)." But as he segues to "American Soldier," a song so gung-ho and puffed up that it could be a musical recruitment poster, you know he's gearing up for a scud missile of a payoff. Sure enough. By the time he gets to "The Taliban Song," a comedic and cartoonish skewering of The Enemy, recorded in concert, it's hard to remember that he once wrote well-crafted ballads of romantic infatuation. Now it's all grandstanding, baby, even the best-written song, a jazzy, talking blues which fillets his critics. If he's not exactly "Shock'n Y'All" as the title suggests, he's certainly putting his "Baddest Boots" forward. --Alanna Nash

This one of my favorite albums that Toby has released. I love all the tracks on here they are fabulous. My favorite are Whiskey Girl & American Soldier. A must for Toby fans that haven't added it to their collection or someone that isn't a fan yet but is interested in buying an album that showcases Toby's style as well as this album does.

MR toby kieth got it right again . He brings accross a good voice and a message that is right on . And it is a breath of fresh air to hear an artist think before he opens up in voice . HIS views are so right .Not as on target and red white and blue . THAT should have been number one song of the yr. But very good .

If people don't like this genre then why bother reviewing? If you want fruit for breakfast don't go for the eggs and bacon then complain it's too heavy. This is simply great hard edged country from a man who says what he feels. America would be safer if more people like Toby spoke out. Only slight criticism, please do more ballads Toby!

Hank 101. Country 101. After 27 years in print as 24 Greatest Hits, Mercury kindly reduced it to 20 Greatest Hits. It's still excellent value, and it's still sobering to realize that Hank recorded just 66 songs during his lifetime, almost all of them essential. Here are those that serve as a working definition of country music, and as an admonition to artists who try to get too wordy or try to lose themselves in minor keys. "Your Cheatin' Heart," "Honky-Tonk Blues," "Cold, Cold Heart," "Lovesick Blues," "You Win Again," "I Can't Help It," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," and the rest. Fifty years later, they still have the power to move, and the power to shape modern country music. --Colin Escott

Listening to this CD brought back a lot of memories of some great songs. I had forgotten how many songs Hank wrote. The quality of the recording is pretty decent, considering that some of the music was originally recorded a long time ago. There's quite a number of songs that have been recorded by others later, but Hank was the guy who wrote them...

I remember Hank. He could not write a bad song if he tried. The majority of his songs were about life, love and living. Often I saw myself in his songs.

This is what rockin' country is supposed to sound like. Shelton Hank Williams, grandson of the country music icon, shows everything he's got on "I Don't Know," his debut's opening track: breakneck fiddle; fancy picking, equal parts Nashville and Macon; flexible rhythm section; wounded, piercing vocals; and unforgiving songs of rage, recklessness, and rejection. He then spends the rest of the CD refining it, song by song. As a writer, he has a real flair for imagery and the sturdy hook, and he also has good taste in remakes. Yes, there is some posturing; occasionally it feels like his nose for trouble, sense of despair, and wild eyes spring from listening to all the right records rather than out of anyone's real life. But for the most part, Hank III seems to come by these things the old-fashioned way: he earns them. Already. If he doesn't earn too much, he's going to do great things. --John Morthland

    5 out of 5 stars That's Entertainment!.......2007-07-17

I love it when Hank III plays country (not so into his thrash side). Anyway, this is my personal favorite as "Lovesick Broke & Driftin'" is a tad weak and "Straight To Hell" seems a little too scattered and self-indulgent. This one just makes me wanna drink beer and have a good time! He's not the best songwriter, but it's that magic twang in his voice and the classic honky tonk sound that gets me going. As an aside, it's really annoying to me when all these former rock music guys proclaim stuff like this to be "Real Country". You people have no clue what real country is! It sure as hell isn't your little elitist/romanticized version where a rock beat, murder ballads and songs about partying are about all thats allowed to pass the hipster PC court. Country music gives comfort to working class people in rural communities. And if that means Faith Hill and Brad Paisley, so what! Real country people don't give a damn about you tattooed suburban posers trying to dictate what's "real". Hank III is no more "real" than any of that other "alternative" country crap that will be passe soon enough. He's just doing retro-flavored stuff to make a little money. I don't care. Enjoy your next fad!

Hank III has done nothing but prove what a whiner he is by trashing other artists. I have not heard one song on here that suggests any artistic ability. This guy needs to clean up his mouth and worry about himself instead of trashing others.

5 out of 5 stars Pass this up and you are just plain Jack Ass through and through........2006-01-09

If you've never bought a Country CD in your life, Make this your first. It is haunting. I defy anyone to play this just once. I always repeat it at least 3 times.

The Man is the most potent proof that one can reveal the age of one's soul through his music. As flat & shallow as the most electronically plumped pop crap on the so called country charts today, is Hank Williams III deep. Next to III, His Father may as well be a fat drunk in a seedy karaoke bar. This young man does his Grandpa proud & them some. He seems possessed of the spirit without having to struggle to invent an identity of his own like his father before him to step out of big Hank's shadow. III steps into the shadow and lights it up like a state fair on the 4th of July. It is all there. It has skipped a generation but it is in the marrow of his bones. In fact he's a damn good living argument for re-incarnation if you ask me. Haunting is a word that is in my mind every time I play my copy of one of his albums. But this isn't for someone looking for a fair impression of Grandpa as his father once did. I myself find myself listening to III then putting on a bit of Grandpa & after a few songs I'm hungry for this all together new phenomenon. The dimensions he reveals & the music he creates in doing so. It's not old fashioned country, nor rockabilly, punk, rock or anything that I think can be pigeon holed. It is as new a form as the bop with which Charlie Parker once rocked the Jazz world. Hank III's versatility is beyond description. Surrounding himself with a posse of daredevil side men who are as hot, versatile & inventive as he, Hank III will have you banging on the Internet for more discs & cursing his woebegone label for holding him back. So talented & so obviously deep a well of humanity is this young man that it would come as no surprise to me if someone, someday mined a great acting ability from that well. The distant mournful look in his eyes within the innocent childlike face belies any image of less to which any reviewer of poorer soul may point.

He is at once, dark, mournful, childishly cocky, sexy, raw & miscieveouly playful. He has a facet for every emotion a listener can possibly need expressed through music. You will put him on when you're blue and end up cheered, you will put him on for a good time & end up haunted long after the album has reached it's end. He comes across as the kind of guy with whom any fun loving man would like to roll one, go out & get plastered & any woman would want to hole up for a stormy few days in shack with a guitar & couple of bottles of J.D.

I pray he can get by & be happy without ever selling out to the industry & falling into the same crap mold of all the big Nashville/Hollywood stars who pass for country artists today. Listen to this Boy & every country record, tape or cd you own that isn't his, his Grandfather's or Patsy Cline's will gather a thick layer of dust before you put them in a giveaway box where they belong.
He will surely leave you with an allergy to sequins sharp black suits and Grammy winning, bleached white teeth.

There was Hank Williams & There is HANK WILLIAMS III. Don't need nobody else & if ya do, you must have a tin ear, shallow life, black heart and a deep dark hole where your soul oughtta be.

Hank Williams JR. -- Do yourself a favor old man & retire. He has come -- no thanks to you!

5 out of 5 stars the album i've been waiting for.......2005-03-29

This album is the epitome of honkytonk country. I have been waiting damn near all my life for this album. Many have tried but none have come this close to the real thing. I can listen to this for days and not get tired of it. It may not be for everyone but this is as good as it gets for the genre. His father may have left a few things to be desired but Hank III picks up right where his grandfather left off and brings a modern edge to this music. If I could rate this as six stars I would. A classic in music almost forgotten.

Her mother was 16 when she had her, and her father moved on when she was two. By the age of 15, with a double-barrel shotgun always at the ready, she was managing a kicker bar in rural Illinois where the corn fields meet the pig farms. That gave Gretchen Wilson something to sing about, with attitude in spades. "You might think I'm trashy, a little too hardcore," she admits on the smash single "Redneck Woman," "but in my neck of the woods I'm just the girl next door." Wilson, already the toast of Nashville before this full-length debut hit the shelves, isn't just putting the trailer park back into country music--she's the antidote to Shania and Faith. Nothing here sounds manufactured or studied, and the best songs are those she wrote. If most of those spotlight the fightin' side that has made "Redneck Woman" an anthem with blue-collar babes, she lets her vulnerability show on her choice of covers, particularly Leslie Satcher's gospel-rap of "Chariot" and the marital weeper "The Bed." Whatever you think of Wilson, who packs a hint of Sammi Smith and Allison Moorer--and even Janis Joplin--into her double-fisted delivery, you won't forget her. Move over, Loretta. Make way, Tanya. Here's another good ol' honky-tonk girl. --Alanna Nash

    5 out of 5 stars Debut Smash.......2007-08-03

Here for the Party is a great debut album from Gretchen Wilson. It probably grates on the nerves of country purists, but whatever, I like it a lot. It is brash and rowdy quite often, with attitude, but not so as to be off-putting. Gretchen bills this as reveling in the kind of trashy side, and lives up to the billing. Her voice is perfect for what this album purports to be. Teh album starts very strong with 4 excellent songs:

Here for the Party - rowdy party anthem
Redneck Woman - celebration of a subculture
When I Think About Cheatin' - good, reflective slower tune. Gretchen can
put real feeling into a ballad tune
Homewrecker - warning to a cookie to stay away from singer's man

The album gets kind of slower in teh middle. Then it gets faster with "When it Rains," which is a good honkytonk tune. The album closes with "Pocahontas" which is a good tune saluting her home town.

    Excellent start by Gretchen.

Even though this is her first it is well worth it she sings well and has old traditional country music not like ms.twain who went for the pop country Gretchen keeps her music downhome and I like it and you need to listen to the whole thing to see her influences not just the title cuts there is more to be heard from her and I'll buy that

I don't listen to country very often, but Gretchen Wilson speaks to the country girl in me, and I love it. It takes me back to my childhood, and all of the wonderful people that I grew up with in the Midwest that cultured folk would call rednecks. I've got to say that Victoria's Secret buying high class broads are dull. The whole CD takes me back and her voice is beautiful too.
