this cd set is definately worth the money spent. i haven't heard some of the music before but was willing to give it a try.

Beautiful music perfect for feeling patriotic. Received CD promptly and in great condition.
A good choice of tunes with good quality.......2005-06-30
If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.
Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11
I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.
Best Patriotic Music I've Found.......2001-09-20
Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

Definitely Listenable.......2007-06-05
I'd say that this is an above average CD. I must say that it seems more like groovecore than hardcore to me, though I'd be the first to admit that such labels are very subjective and debatable. The songs have some good riffage, and the yelling/singing has a nice melodic tone to it at times. Some of the riffs sound similar to ones you've already heard, though there is nothing so repetitive that you start to get bored. I personally liked there moderately-paced follow-up, Road Less Traveled, a bit more, but Struggle is also a good one.
First album of its kind .......2005-10-29
The Focused album "Bow" predates Struggle by a year, but in my mind, this is the first Christian hardcore album of any note. (The Crucified had been thrashing since the mid/late 80's, but their hardcore/thrash hybrid was more akin to crossover bands like D.R.I.) Words cannot describe how this album shaped my musical mind. As a christian teenager in the early 90's in a very dry time for any good "non-CCM" (Tooth & Nail had only just gotten off the ground) I discovered this album. Although this is not the best hardcore album I've ever heard, it was light years ahead of its time, and it is still just as affecting when I spun it today as it was nearly 12 years ago. It just hit me at a very impressionable time in my life - lyrically, musically, aesthetically. Struggle was heard by far too few people before R.E.X.(home also to Living Sacrifice and Sixpence None the Richer) screwed all their bands by going under. For those who have not heard this record, imagine a really slow, groove laden Pantera/East Coast Hardcore mix. The message is solid - Myk Porter pulls no lyrical punches about his Christianity. An absolutely essential album for understanding the roots of the Christian hard music scene.
Origonal HARDCORE with an AWSOME message!!.......2003-08-17
One of the BEST albulms ever produced.(Production wise) Clear HARD thundering riffs, with an UNBELIEVIABLE percussion session. Lead singer REALLY gets his point across!!

Marian Anderson's rich contralto tinged with sadness touched the hearts of many and made her one of the most-loved American singers. She's probably best known for her spirituals on recordings made in the twilight of her career. In these good transfers, she sings an ample selection of those favorites made in her prime, the late 1930s; they're no less touching and made even more compelling by the freshness of her voice, which is just as fresh in the Handel and Bach arias from the Messiah, St. Matthew Passion, and more. - -Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
In a class of her own.......2007-07-21
Dignified, lovable and instantly recognisable Marian Anderson is much beloved first afro-american singer to achieve world-wide recognition, together with Paul Robeson she represents almost biblical royal couple from whom later generations sprung and followed.True, she certainly had to fight with unjustice, prejudice and obstacles (curiously enough, she was instantly recognised as artist of highest calibre in Europe while they troubled her back home) but all those events are far now,as I am writting this in Summer 2007 and what is the most important is her musical legacy.Contrary to liner notes on this CD where they suggest her singing might be old fashioned by todays standards,I found her singing simply stunning, serious, deeply moving and sincere. In fact,of all "Prima Voce" compilations, this is the one I believe has not aged or became museum relic, this is a pure masterpiece that can be cherished forever and time cannot erase or diminish art like this.
CELEBRATE Marian Anderson's powerful, liberated voice with JOY!.......2006-03-25
On April 9, 1939, the voice of Marian Anderson shook my whole being unforgettably. She began her concert by singing our nation's hymn, "Our Country 'Tis of Thee, Sweet Land of Liberty,"
a prayer for all to give voice to.
Two events that took place on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., had a profound effect on my life. In a minister's family any political discussion was usually 'careful'. But when the Daughters of the American Revolution ruled that Marian Anderson could not give a concert in their Constitution Hall my parents spoke passionately about Anderson's rebuff, and then praised First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to the skies for her immediate response which was to invite Marian Anderson to sing at the Lincoln Memorial.
What happened had charged the air with electricity. The hush was palpable. To listen we were limited to the radio, but we would see the newsreel before many days.
All this is an introduction to this CD which shows the power and range of Marian Anderson's talents. Among these offerings are several from cantatas, and some 'spirituals' - - and I mention the familiar because they make me feel as though I am truly in her presence once more: The 23rd Psalm; "He shall feed his flock like a shepherd"; "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child"; "Deep River"; and "My soul's been anchored in the Lord."
The latter could be said to describe both Marian Anderson and Martin Luther King. I have felt the unshakeable presence of each, Marian with her glorious contralto, Martin with his baritone. Noone could miss the reality of justice & faith overcoming hate & ignorance. Reviewer mcHAIKU can still feel the impact, and their influences on my life have been part of me for decades.
Timeless performances.......2005-12-08
Marian Anderson suffered from several circumstances, but always endured them, it appeared, with grace and dignity. She suffered from being black at a time when black persons were not taken seriously as classical artists, and she was simply not allowed to sing in many venues. She was forbidden the stage of the Metropolitan Opera until past her prime (1955). After she became an icon of the civil rights movement, her reputation as a singer became overshadowed. Miss Anderson's treatment by her own countrymen for much of her life was an abomination, but it had nothing to do with music. Modest as she was about all aspects of her life, I don't think she would want her artistry relegated to a footnote in social history!
This is a fine collection of Marian Anderson's singing in oratorio and spirituals. None of her wonderful opera arias or lieder are here, and those call for a separate volume. Miss Anderson stood out from many great singers in her fine understanding of the subtle differences among all of these genres. She used different tone colors and types of vocal production for each of them, as appropriate, a nicety seldom enough observed today. In other words, she was no "belter." We have singers nowadays making millions for yelling at the top of their lungs, and sometimes making multi-millions for trying to out-yell their colleagues in giant arena events closely simulating cattle-call competitions. Perhaps one needs to meditate quietly for an hour or so before attempting to share the more inward and spiritual artistry of Marian Anderson.
From the first selection here (out of over 72 minutes of music included), "Jesus schläft, was soll ich hoffen" from Bach's Cantata No. 81, one can only marvel at the tonal beauty, depth of feeling, immediacy of communication, and technical accomplishment of the great contralto. In this aria, the long-held word "schläft" is not just thrilling as a piece of vocalism, but does just what Bach meant it to: express the gentle, timeless, cosmic-yet in this case ominous-slumber of the Savior. Seldom, outside of Miss Anderson's singing, have these Bach arias so risen above the "sewing-machine" school of performance. Her style is freer and warmer in the spirituals, which no one but Paul Robeson sang as impressively. There are eleven of them here, though not her most famous, "He's got the whole world in his hands." That too must be acquired elsewhere, as is easily done. There are no cheap shots in this anthology, just great performances of great music with no playing to the grandstands.
My favorite singer.......2005-09-27
This is a great CD. Despite the obvious technical limitations at the time of original recording, the sound quality on this CD is really good. I love Marian Anderson (as a contralto myself,I strive to be like her)and I think this CD does her justice. It's great to hear the range of her vocal talent. The combination of opera and spirituals is wonderful. The songs also vary in vocal range. I was happy to hear a collection of songs that showcased the strength of her voice at its lower and upper ends. Overall, I'd say this was an excellent CD.
Honest Transfer of Great Material from 78s.......2001-03-24
There are eleven spirituals on this CD, but it opens with a stunning traversal of seven sacred selections from the Baroque era, six selections of Bach and one of Handel. Ms. Anderson's sweetness, sincerity and artistry are complemented nicely by a young Robert Shaw conducting the RCA Symphony Orchestra (you can clearly hear the later Shaw of the Bach B Minor Mass in places, and the selection from the St. Matthew Passion is a haunting reminder that Shaw was never able to commit a complete Matthew to disc for posterity, though it was his favorite work and its recording a goal in his life - but I stray). What the Baroque selections lack in the latest in musicological authenticity they more than make up for in heartfelt simplicity and directness. It's Baroque music for the ages, and it may move you to tears.
The eleven spirituals, on the other hand, are accompanied only by an unidentified pianist, one who is certainly quite accomplished and gives Ms. Anderson a superb level of support. The question will need to be asked, I suppose, "Is there perhaps more inspiration present in the singing of the spirituals than in the Baroque selections?" Not at all; the artistry in both is equal. Indeed, modern audiences, used to hyped-up versions of these spirituals, may be slightly disappointed at the plainness of these renditions. I wasn't; I was enchanted.

Album Description
Produced by Ms. Montgomery and issued on her own record label, Little Sunflower features nine tantalizing songs, many of them written by the songstress and her longtime pianist and co-writer, Barry Sames, as well as covers of Freddie Hubbard and Duke Pearson tunes with Ms. Montgomery's appendant lyrics. Two songs, "Armando's Rhumba" and "You're Always in My Space" hearken back to Ms. Montgomery's previous album, Dakini Land, a tribute to her friendship and the music of master keyboardist Chick Corea and his wordsmith Neville Potter. The latter song is a premier of a never before recorded work of Mr. Corea's; the former includes lyrics written at the request of Ms. Montgomery and recorded for the first time as well. Ms. Montgomery assembled an empathetic group of musicians and let them stretch out, the result being that the songs seems to fully and organically developed to the point of luxuriation. Tenor saxophonist Chris Farr and hornman John Swana provide the perfect complements to Ms. Montgomery's strong, protean singing and their ample solo spaces are packed with smart harmonic inventions and infectious phrasings. Sames, a sparkling pianist, not only energizes the rhythm section, he also supplies a broad, knowing acccompaniment to Ms. Montgomerythat allows her to confidently ride the groove. Her vocals show that she is an acute expositor of the language of power, coercion, and, ultimately, love. Whether it be with husky declarations or soaring sanctifications, Ms. Montgomery's exquisite vocal gifts and unerring attentivness to a song's dynamics come together here on Little Sunflower. Bluesy, shrewd, seductive, gracious, sentimental--few singers around today can color a song like Barbara Montgomery.

Pre-grunge grunge........2006-06-19
Yet another grunge comp, this one however puts only six bands on display. These were the Seattle groups that supposedly began the genre. As this was originally released on vinyl in the mid/late 80's, these are all fairly raw, yet good. The Green River songs are decent, but that band sounded much better when it eventually became Mudhoney/Mother Love Bone/Pearl Jam. I assumed the Soundgarden tracks were the versions heard on "Ultramega OK" and the "Pump Up The Volume" soundtrack, but in fact they are all near-demo quality, yet nice to hear at the same time. The rest I like, but not enough to make this essential. Overall I'd say a must for the grungiest fans. Others can stick with the "Singles" soundtrack.
I Could Live With This Record Alone for the Rest of My Life.......2004-08-11
I'm not freaking kidding you, as a fairly hardcore grunger I found this to be the definitive grunge album. Its sludgy, heavy, absurd, wild, angry, loud, varied (look at With Yo' Heart Not Yo' Hands and then The Birds), paranoid, and most of all grungy. Stand out tracks include With Yo' Heart Not Yo' Hands (Malfunkshun), Heretic (Soundgarden), All Your Lies (Soundgarden), 10,000 Things (Green River), Grinding Process (Melvins), The Birds (Skin Yard), and They (U-Men). Goddamnit man, go buy this album now if you are a fan or are interested in grunge in general.
great grunge.......2003-05-26
I got this album on cd after waiting seven years to find it on vinyl, and it was just as good as i thought it would be.Deep six was originally realeased in 1986 on vinyl on C/Z records. After the breahthrough of grunge in 91-92, it was re-released on cd by A&M records in 1994. Deep six features six seattle bands: Soundgarden, Green river,Melvins,Malfunkshun,U-men and Skin yard.Except for the U-men,these were all the bands first ever recordings. The music is good, with the bands sounding muddy but great.Green rivers 10.000 things is probably the best song, but Soundgardens three contributions are the most interesting with the band sounding nothing like their later efforts. The album stands as one of the best and most interesting documents of the eighties seattle grunge scene. Deep six is probably of most value to collectors, but any fan of Seattle(and eighties underground)-rock should consider getting this.

Customer Reviews:
A real rarity.......2003-10-27
I never thought I'd see this on a CD. "Rising Sun" was a minor hit single in Southern California, and the flip side, "Strollin' Blues" was just as great. Both were performed by the group on the TV show Hullabaloo. The liner notes are worth the price of the CD alone. Steve Stanley did a masterful job of documenting the group's history. The CD sound, however, is a disappontment. It is not stereo, as indicated on the label, but mono with some stereo ambiance added (the mono sound, however, is good). It is a mystery why they used a mono master, because a true stereo master was available: I know this because I have a studio copy of the master tape. The bonus tracks were mastered from vinyl 45s, by the sound of them; "Strollin' Blues" even sounds like it was from a single that was a bit off-center. Still, it's good to have these songs available again.

Customer Reviews:
An impressive collection, stunningly performed.......2004-04-07
Since others have addressed Nyaho's stunning performances, I'd like to address the collection itself. These are not merely works by composers who happen to be of African descent; they are inspired and informed by ethnic influences. Joshua Uzoigwe's (Nigeria) "Talking Drums" juxtaposes the rhythmic and melodic characteristics found in African master drumming on the Ukom, Iyalu and small slit-drums, and are based on the Ukom scale and harmonic system. Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson's (USA) "Scherzo" is inspired by Chopin, blues and jazz. Gamal Abdel-Rahim's (Egypt) "Variations on an Egyptian Folksong" is compelling and intricate.
But don't get me wrong...these are not intellectual exercises in nationalism. Each piece stands on its own musically, and the variety here makes this a compelling and wonderful CD from start to finish.
Colorful, Creative, Brilliant!!!.......2003-12-03
Every now and then a recording comes along that is as important as it is unique.
This is such a recording.
I approached this CD with a desire to explore a back road of art music, in the hopes that I might find a hidden gem of inspiration, or even a piece to perform myself (I am also a pianist). What I found instead was a superhighway of talent and creativity that has somehow remained overlooked by the "mainstream" art music world.
Pianist Nyaho Chapman presents us with an astonishing variety of compositions, ranging from the more conservative "In The Bottoms Suite" of Robert Nathaniel Dett or Margaret Bond's Troubled Water, to the more abstract "Talking Drums" of Joshua Uzoigwe or Earthbeats of Gyimah Labi. Mr. Chapman's performance of Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson's Scherzo surely proves him as one of the more brilliant pianists on the circuit. The piece is as relentless as it is physically demanding. And, like the other works on this disk, it is recorded with clarity and precision.
I highly recommend this CD to anyone wishing to enrich their musical life.

Customer Reviews:
The best album we made.......2003-02-01
Have to say this is my favourite Dentists album although personally I feel it's probably a bit too long. We did debate leaving off a few tracks but we were having so much fun in the studio that we kept far too many on. I think the best song is "Electric Train of Thought" cos it has all the elements of a classic Murphy number and is pretty unusual in as much as Murphy wrote all the lyrics - pretty dark stuff too. There's lots of crazy appliances played as the song fades out too, and that always brings a smile to the old boat race.
Listen out for the Japanese girl our manager was trying to impress.. she crops up on the start of Weirdo.
Favourite moment ? On the "secret" track when Mick says "I'm really not in the mood to do this" and Bob's reading of the football results....
