5 out of 5 stars When pop music provided the goods........2007-08-04

Yes, folks. Hard to believe but, fifteen years ago, bands (as in guys who played instruments) were considered pop music. Hard to believe now, isn't it? This stuff was actually popular with the mainstream. The very mainstream that, nowadays, embraces Akon and Fergie as their idols. This is still planet Earth, right? Where did it all go?

Nothing shouts opinionated apathy more than grunge music. Grunge. I hate the word, but it did define something. In the actual sense, it defines a style against a style. Contradictory, yes, but brilliant minds were always conflicted with themselves, weren't they? Before it became the mainstream's little darling, "grunge" was for people who simply didn't give a flick. Fashion and the problems of the world could go scratch. This was OUR music.

I guess it really was a glorious time for music. You still had your garbage, but the radio wasn't completely saturated with it. You had your Nirvana. Your Pearl Jam. Your Alice In Chains. Your Faith No More. Your Rage Against The Machine. And you had your Soundgarden. Soundgarden. Oh, Chris Cornell. Why do you do what you do these days? Get Kim back in the studio and show 'em how it's done!

5 out of 5 stars Soundgarden still awesome!.......2007-07-30

This CD is awesome and brings back a ton of memories.Remember when Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearljam AIC and STP ruled the world? (sigh). I could listen to this one over and over again.I don't think there is a "bad" song on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars THEIR BEST ALBUM.......2007-07-28

IF YOU LOVE LISTENING TO SOUNDGARDEN YOU'LL LOVE THIS ALBUM. IF YOU'RE A HARD ROCKER YOU GOTTA HAVE SOUNDGARDEN IN YOUR COLLECTION. GO AHEAD, RE-DISCOVER THEM, OR DISCOVER THEM FOR THE FIRST TIME, WITH THIS COMPILATION OF HARD ROCKIN TUNES.

5 out of 5 stars Hard Rock Perfection.......2007-06-28

Clearly, Soundgarden's best album, one of the very, very best hard rock albums of all time, and one which finds the group at the very top of their very impressive game. Before Badmotorfinger, they were just another dumb loud band, and afterwards, they compromised their hard rock instincts in an effort to be "artists." But for one, brief, shining moment, namely Badmotorfinger, Soundgarden was the very best rock band in the world.

4 out of 5 stars The second best Soundgarden album.......2007-06-27

We all know Superunknown is the best Soundgarden album out there, so if you're looking for more, look no further than this album.

4 out of 5 stars but did you know?.......2006-10-03

i'm surprised that with all of the "scholarly" reviews of the covers on this limited edition, nobody has pointed out that the lyrics on "into the void(sealth)" are not the original lyrics from black sabbath's version. they are actually from a speech delivered by chief seattle(sealth) during treaty negotiations with dominant white settlers in the 1850's. refer to the children's book "brother eagle, sister sky," by susan jeffers for the lyrics to this version.
also, having been a soundgarden fan well before this album came out, i cannot agree that this album is their best, although it was the beginning of their commercial success. in my humble opinion, "ultramega" and "louder than love" really capture the essence of soundgarden and the underground scene pre 1991 and the seattle explosion that made "alternative" music mainstream.
it's a shame the albums that enabled these bands to enjoy commercial success often overshadow the albums that are lesser known and capture the music scene in it's undiluted form. i guess it's like san francisco and the "summer of love." by the time the rest of the nation new about san francisco in 1967, the real essence of the renaissance that had happened had already been replaced by runaway girls from all over the country, speed, and the commercialism of what was going on.
anyway, if you really want to check the seattle music scene, skip the pearl jam and go for the mother love bone. check out mudhoney, melvins, green river, and don't forget queensryche. oh, and contrary to what some may say, jimi hendrix was never a part of any seattle music scene. he was born in seattle but came up on the east coast before going into the millitary and eventually going to england to form the experience.
ranting aside, badmotorfinger is a great album and i burnt it up when it came out. gwan head an gittit.

5 out of 5 stars Ummmmm...............2004-02-28

If one were to write a review for this double cd set one ought to be familiar with the material(other reviewers take note).

The Badmotorfinger album was in my opinion Soundgarden's finest hour, although Superunknown was a greater commercial success, the band really got their sound and chops down on this album. Ben Sheperd stepped in to replace Hiro Yamamoto, and his songwriting skills and musicianship meshed perfectly with the rest of the group. All the songs are good, with standouts such as "Good Eye Closed" and "Outshined" which was a staple on MTV.

Kim Thayil is god on the guitar, and Cornell has the lungs of a young Ronnie James Dio,with such range it's hard to beleive he is human. Matt Cameron is a good drummer, and even Neil Peart said so(Neil Peart is the best drummer who ever lived,in case anyone was wondering).

As for the bonus cd,a collection af b-sides and live material,I like it a lot. I love their version of DEVO'S "Girl U Want, and "Into The Void",which really is a Sabbath cover(their influence is heavy on this album)along with the others. For the collector I would recommend this particular item, otherwise you could buy a Cure album and go blow goats.

5 out of 5 stars An improved classic........2003-05-27

"Somms". It's a palindrome. Spelled the same forwards and backwards. "Badmotorfinger" alone is incredible, but knowing that this limited edition is hard to find, I had to get it. Most or all of these tracks can be found elsewhere, but nice to have together here. A few covers to start. "Into the Void" (Sabbath), "Girl you Want" (Devo), "Stray cat Blues" (Stones). All done very well. Then "She's a Politician" (Cornell), and a live version of "Slaves and Bulldozers". ONLY that song is done live. Not all five. This is a great find for the Soundgarden fan, though you may have to search the used bins or online to get it. Maybe soon we'll get a "B-sides" disc to complement the "A-sides" one.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2003-04-02

this cd is the same version as the regular badmotorfinger with one xception. it comes with an extra cd called somms that has only five songs. one of which is a live version of slaves-n-bulldozers. the other four are covers. into the void, by black sabath song while stray cat blues is a rolling stones song. there are two other songs girl u want by devo and she's a politician by chris cornell. all 5 are good songs and make this a worthwhile additon to any soundgarden fan's collection.
all of the above mentioned songs are live. the production is good, for a live album. the songs are interestingly done and this cd is a intersting find.
as for badmotorfinger, as an album, it is one of the many great releases from soundgarden. we all know rusty cage and outshined but there is so much better music here such as songs that let ben shepard and his groove drenched bass playing shine. i am speaking of slaves -n- bulldozers. what a great song. chris cornell penns some great lyrics through the whole album. most notably here and the song somewhere. what a melody (both in lyrics and music), what great lyrics and what a great song all around.
one most also note monster drummer extraordinaire matt cameron who pulls out some great beats(its all about the beat, drop a phat one and repeat)and fills, most notably on jesus christ pose. just listen to the drums. amazing.
there are other great songs such as searching with my good eye closed, mind riot and drawing flies. it is on drawing flies and mind riot that soundgarden show their punkier side, busting out the songs with the spirit of a band possessed. this is one good album and the bonus somms cd makes this worht your time and money.
