Absolute perfection........2006-12-18

Some say why reinvent the wheel..hell why not when it is this perfect.Any major deviation from the original masterpiece will make most people very upset.Producing a perfect duplicate of the the original makes some people unhappy but its just what the doctor ordered for me.Don't get me wrong,i have the original Japan made masterpiece..but my opinion is that this cover album stands on its own and is highly recommended..get the Japan version.

Faithfull singing (and playing), some intelligent takes, some less. I don't think this can bring a new light on Waters' masterpiece - it is not a very subtle reading. The way the music is played here doesn't seem to help the script. The Wall - live in Berlin is a much better experience in this respect.

Back Against the Wall.......2006-08-04

O.K., this is faithful to the original, but not as slavishly as other people who have reviewed this say. I just picked this up and am amazed at the subtlety of the playing. The person who reviewed and said that this is a "note for note" reproduction has never seen the sheet music.

The musicians, as has been said before, are amazing. Steve Morse was undersatedly brilliant. Ian Anderson was an interesting pick. It's nice to see Gary Green (Gentle Giant) recording again. There are so many, I'm not going to continue naming them. They all bring something interesting to the table.

Is this CD close to the original? Yes. The same? No. Is it a tribute? Absolutely.

If you are a fan of Pink Floyd, or The Wall, and don't want other's interpretations, don't get this. In fact don't get any tribute albums, ever. If you want to hear some of the best musicians around lovingly rework The Wall material, you've come to the right place.

Buy this album, it's very good.

You've gotta be kidding! Sure, it's all expertly played, but it's so slavishly FAITHFUL that what's the point? Got news for you, friends, it ain't a tribute to play something "correctly" in a popular music idiom, it's a waste of time! Spend the money you would've laid out for this on Luther Wright and The Wrong's REBUILD THE WALL. Now THAT'S a tribute!

I never purchase "tribute" albums, but..........2006-03-14

...this one is different.

Whenever Amazon recommends a 'tribute' album to me, I am usually disappointed. Let's face it, most of the times they don't live up to the originals. When I saw "Back Against the Wall" on Amazon, I gave it a quick listen and immediately bought it when I saw that some of my favorite artists played on it (Wakeman, Howe, Squire, White, Emerson.) I got it yesterday, and have already listened to it 5 times.

Does it sound like Pink Floyd? No. Is it supposed to? No. Pink Floyd has always been one of my favorite bands, but I have grown tired of "The Wall" in recent years. Don't get me wrong, I love the music...it's my own fault for playing the crap out of it for the past 20 years.

"Back Against the Wall" has breathed new life into the songs, and it's almost like a rediscovery of sorts. Billy Sherwood and friends have done an excellent job of putting their own interpretations on this classic album...and the result is a masterpiece.

Is it better than Floyd's version? It doesn't have to be...it's different.

Buy it...you won't be disappointed.

My first review for quite a while.............2006-08-22

All you holier than thou indie types out there can bag Amazon.com all you like, but for so many of us out here it can be a goldmine of things we never would have otherwise heard. Two Cow Garage are a classic example of that. The thread of how I came to them is now forgotten, but as I listen (again) to "the wall against our back" I am reminded of those moments in your life where you wouldn't trade your love of music for anything. Music that can put a soundtrack to feelings you sometimes can't even describe. Like the first time I heard the intensity of the Replacements, or Whiskeytown, or Husker Du and wished I was living in their town (or even their country) so I could see them play before they burnt out. Two Cow Garage will probably never play Perth, Western Australia, but hopefully one day I will get to the USA. After a drive all day in no particular direction, I'll pull into some no name town with some no name bar, and Two Cow Garage will be busy tearing the place a new one. The bastard offspring of Steve Earle and Rancid.And if any of you end up in outback Australia in similar circumstances, I hope the Drones are playing. Check out "Wait long by the river and the bodies of your enemies will float by".
The CD gets four stars because I think you should only award any CD five stars years down the track if you're still listening to it. Guess I'll get back to you.

If the demise of Uncle Tupelo left a hole in your heart that the Jayhawks, Old 97s and Ryan Adams have not managed to fill, your luck is about to change. Paint peelin', real dealin', roots rock n' roll, made in America. Short listed album in the "alt.country" tradition, with Uncle Tupelo, "No Depression," Nadine, "Downtown Saturday," Whiskeytown, "Faithless Street," and Slobberbone, "Everything You Thought Was Right." Get the disc, then grab your earplugs and get to a show.

The Next Great Band that wont have a #1 hit.......2005-05-28

I've fell in love with both of two cows albums in the last 2 years. I've seen them live twice (once by accident at slobberbone's last concert.)These guys can rock. When i have seen them they were opening for two of the best alt/country/rock bands of all time, slobberbone and the bottle rockets. Their second album "the wall against out backs" is better written and alot better mixed than their first(which kicks ass also). 135 and Alphabet city will be lovingly stuck in ur head for days on end. I have alot of friends who only listen to nu metal and new pop country and they all like two cow alot. at their last concert they were nice enough to sit and talk with me and sign some cd's. you cant meet nicer musicians who really care about what they do. BUY BOTH THEIR CD'S IF YOU CAN AND AT ALL COSTS GO AND SEE THEM LIVE. YOU WILL FIND OUT (or remember)WHAT A REAL ROCK CONCERT FEELS LIKE.

I'm in a band called The Most Beautiful Losers and we SAW these guys in Cleveland and I fell in love!!! These boys know how to deliver the RAWK!!! In the great tradition of UNCLE TUPELO, SLOBBERBONE, WHISKEYTOWN, LUCERO and THE DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS...I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ALBUM AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND SEEING THESE GUYS LIVE!!!! This band rocks. Plain and simple. I don't know if it was the falling of the Berlin Wall and the consequential end of the Cold War that dampered rockin' almost to an end, but this is a new era, we have a new war, and now new leaders for the new era of Rock and Roll. Two guitars and a drum set, mix in some serious rockin' hard, and you have the cool, crisp, and refreshing sound of Two Cow. Rock almost died, but you, our saviors have come to resurrect the Rock! Thank you my friends, thank you more than you know.

First off, this 2cd set contains 2 albums from a latter incarnation of The Groundhogs, not the seminal 1968-71 line-up but an excellent one nonetheless.

54146 contains the 1986 'BACK AGAINST THE WALL'(studio) and 1987's 'Hogs On The ROAD'(live frm germany).A total of 25 tracks, with 13 on cd#1 (68+ min) and 12 on cd#2 (72+min).

The track listing is misleading because you get the impression on the case liner notes that cd1 is BATW, cd2 HOTR. Actually, BATW is tracks 1-8 on cd#1 and 9-13 is the first portion of HOTR. The 2nd cd, 1-12 is all HOTR.

Minor quibble aside, this is a great cd(s) for those unfamiliar with Tony McPhee and the Groundhogs, and is recommended before delving into earlier manifestations of the group (the so-called classic era). On 'Hogs On The Road' they play selections from several earlier albums (those frm 1968-71) and 2 frm the studio 'Back Against The Wall', which was promoted on this tour in 1987.

On all accounts however Tony McPhee IS the Groundhogs,and his spectacular guitarwork provides the foundation for their unique take on the "blues-rock-progressive" power trio format. The sound is very guitar driven (McPhee is one of the best,believe me) with blues orientated lyrics from McPhee,who sounds not unlike Steppenwolf's John Kay (though perhaps not quite the power). Again, the emphasis here is the guitar anyway.

Over the past forty years B.J. Thomas has been one of the greatest male singers around who can sing anything and better than anyone else and this stellar collection of richly varied performances is a great example...starting with a soulful country-styled ballad "What I See In Her Is You", B.J. infuses this song with so much passion and soul that this song becomes an instant classic that should have been a huge crossover hit! "A Southern Girl On A Summer Night" sounds like another #1 country-pop crossover hit and maybe it was and if not should have been. A solid-soul classic revisited, "You Make Me Feel Brand New" has never sounded better and B.J.'s gorgeous vocal make this the definitive "male vocal" version...by now one will wonder why the music industry ignored this awesome masterwork and what was going on with the Radio Programmers Of America when this great work was released that allowed them to let something this great and so universal in its appeal slip through the cracks...this gifted singer has made so many great collections of richly varied masterful performances yet they all go underexposed with poor promotion and one wonders why? Extremely precise reinterpretation of The Wall! (You just might forget this is a cd of cover songs!).......2006-10-05

This CD is full of some really good songs. Infact, all the songs are really good! This is "The Wall" we're talking about here.

But in terms of the entire album being a "The Wall" cover album. Some, if not ALL of these songs, are done EXTREMELY well. And VERY precise. Even down the vocals. Somehow, the artists manage to SOUND like Roger Waters and David Gilmour. It's so good, you just might forget this is a cd of cover songs!

"Hey You", is done quite well. "Another Brick in The Wall (Part 1)" is also done extremely well. The intro guitars to "Goodbye Blue Sky" aren't that great, but the song soon evolves into a NEAR PERFECT cover, which sounds VERY MUCH like the original Pink Floyd hit. You'll be extremely suprized you're even listening to a cover, infact. Once the lyrics hit. It sounds just like Pink Floyd!

But the main treat here, is the cover of "Comfortably Numb". Which is a damn near PRECISE reinterpretation of the way Roger Waters performs the song, live. I don't think i've EVER heard a more precise cover in my entire life, infact. It's NOT a cover of the album version. It's a cover of Roger Waters' LIVE version.

And a damn precise one it is!
Yet it's not live at all.

Def. the main reason to get this cd though.

Overall, this is THE BEST tribute CD I own. Most tribute CD's suck, in my opinion. But this one shines above EVERY SINGLE other one, ever made. Period.

Tribute bands need take note and influence from Michael Sherwood, and the rest of the gang whom composed this CD. Because this is def. the way a tribute CD should be done.

If you're a fan of David Gilmour, Roger Waters...Hell, PINK FLOYD!
I urge you to get this tribute!

It's a damn near precise reinterpretation of every single track on "The Wall". And the "Comfortably Numb" cover (which is a cover of the Roger Waters LIVE version), is one of THE MOST precise covers i've ever heard.

Get it.
For once, it's a tribute CD that doesn't suck!

I absolutely love every song on this CD and have played it over and over as part of my morning devotionals on the way to my office. 'By Faith' really speaks to me; it's a mercy my cassette tape hasn't snapped as I play it over and over again. Vaneese Thomas is a greatly spirit-driven musically blessed woman! Why she doesn't get national air play is beyond my comprehension! The song 'By Faith' alone speaks to the multi-dimensional depth of her gift; there are so many musical genres there. For anyone loving good quality music which provides praise to the Lord and spiritual uplift, 'When my Back's Against the Wall' is a must-have!! Don't wait!

My spirit resonates with joy when the vocalists sing the chorus, "In Under the Son". My theme song going to work is the hard-driving, chain-gang rhythm, "By Faith", an inspirational song that carries me through the day. Every song on this CD speaks to me, uplifts me, helps me to deal with what I may be going through on a particular day. I f you find yourself depressed by daily news events and reporting, try a new approach. I have found that the music and lyrics on this album pick up my spirits when I listen to them in the mornings. They help me to focus on the powerful presence of God in my life. The only problem is that I find myself replaying the title song over and over on my commute to work...and I rarely get to hear any of the following pieces. But when I do, I wonder why I waited. Vanesse is amazingly talented in all facets of music preparation and production. I am so grateful that God has guided her to share those talents with us through this spirit-filled music.
