5 out of 5 stars perfect dose of musical warfare.......2007-06-29

how can anyone give this album anything less than a 5? from start to finish it gives the listener a completely unrelentless onslaught of dirty desert rock. The guitar and bass sounds are flawlessly recorded. They fuse together to form a wall of sludgy down tuned mayhem. A must buy for ANY rock and roll fans. To hell with genre classifications. People that feel the need to group everything into a category can suck it. Good music is good music. And Wretch is beyond good.

4 out of 5 stars This is where it all began. Stoner Rock's Roots..........2007-02-02

..okay, maybe not Stoner Rock's roots. However, it is the roots of Southern California stoner rock. This is Kyuss' first album. It's not quite on the same level as Sky Valley or Blues For The Red Sun, but it's a damn good album that rocks start to finish. I must say, the two forementioned albums are the only reason I gave this four stars and not five. Kyuss bloomed right after this album. They were still in the growing process, during this one.

5 out of 5 stars Desert Paradise!.......2006-02-14

1. This music is not for the soft hearted.
2. The tracks elicit wanton desires.
3. This music is pre-QOTSA and is not trendy.
4. The band line up is no where as important as the music.
5. The band line up is very, very cool indeed.

What's going on here is groove metal at it's finest. This music is stylistic in all it's glory, giving you some solid sounds from the wayward desert side.

The guitar drawls and the rhythym is like a steady rip tide of slash & thrash. Snug angry music, the sort of inspiration a young soul needs to DTB (DTB apply's to both genders). I believe this album is best enjoyed pool side with the carné grilln and the ladies serving up the margaritas.

*Band Line up:
Brant Bjork!! on drums.
Josh Homme!! on guitar.
Nick Oliveri!! on bass.
John Garcia!! on vocals.
Chris Cockrell!! on bass.
Mixed by Kris Fuhrman.
Mixed by Michael Mikulka.
Mastered by Carol Hibbs.
Produced by Catherine Enny, Ron Krown & Kyuss.

5 out of 5 stars classic.......2005-11-25

Fantastic. This album, in my opinion has the energy that kyuss later left behind (Circus Leaves Town).
Comparible in some ways in production to the MC5 and the Stooges. Passion ahead of musical prowess, truly great.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums ever made- really.......2005-03-03

This album shows a tremendous range of musical tastes... All of them good. Everything blends- The album is a 50 minute journey- one song leads to the other like you're right there with the band, choosing what's going to come next- and there will be NO compromise in the set from the moment you hit the play button. I have four Kyuss albums ... the others are good; but this one is IT. It makes a statement: The music matters.

5 out of 5 stars The Better of the two.......2006-06-03

I have both disc in the series. I liked the music on this disc much more than the first. The selections seem more focused and the sounds are much clearer. Also, the particular pieces fit better together. I love the sound of this group and hope they make more in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as version 1 in this series.......2004-09-03

This is by the same group who did the wonderful & engaging Early American Choral Music 1. Somehow this CD did not live up to its predecessor in some ways. The performance is still top notch, but somehow the CD as a whole isn't quite as engaging to listen to as the first. Perhaps version 2's strength is also its weakness. Its diversity of composers allows you to pear past the shadow of William Billings and sample other notable early American hymn writers. That exposure is valuable & appreciated. I just couldn't get into it as much.

A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.

4 out of 5 stars Same as 'Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800'.......2004-02-21

Please note this CD is a duplicate of His Majestie's Clerkes's "Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800" -- identical contents but a different name and cover. I ordered both and was irritated to discover this. This CD is cheaper, so I recommend this one. It is a lovely choral work from a little-known period of sacred music.

This is great choral singing, and if you missed it in this incarnation, all is not lost. It has been reissued by Harmonia Mundi's budget label, Classical Express as "Early American Choral Music vol 2 Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800". Texts of the songs aren't in the booklet but can be downloaded from the label's website.

I Fagiolini is one of those groups where I try to get my hands on every recording they've made. This CD is just another example of why. Great individual voices but the ensemble really comes together well. They make it sound so easy to sing this repertoire. Tomkins is a a master of writing sad laments such as Woe is Me, When David Heard, and I Fagiolini brings out the raw emotion of these pieces. If you are an early music connoisseur, you will love this group. Pick up this CD, and while you're at it, get their Triumphs of Oriana and the two Byrd recordings. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Another feast for Handelians.......2003-12-25

Here's another astonishing piece for all Handelians. Many of Handel's great pieces have sadly been neglected - just like many of Richard Strauss' operas which have only recently received attention from people like Botstein, Korsten and Sinopoli (deceased). Thankfully, Gardiner and his team took the trouble to record this astonishing masterpiece. I simply love this piece - Saul!! The Monteverdi choir is the best in the world - listen to their stunning virtuosity here. Thank you, Gardiner!!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent music.......2003-09-14

Saul is one of those lesser known works by Handel. I certainly prefer Solomon, the Messiah or Israel in Egypt. Nevertheless, there is plenty of glorious music in Saul. The Monteverdi sings with their customary virtuosity. Casting of solo parts is superb. A bit on the pricey side but this is an investment that will yield rich dividends over a long period of time. Instead of listening to the Messiah all the time, or Solomon or Jephtha, why not be more daring and explore this lesser known work by Handel?

          Album Description

11 fast-paced punk rock anthems about homeless vets, broken homes and self-reflection. Any fan of the East Bay sound will enjoy Parkway Wretch's Homesick, similar to bands like Crimpshrine and Pinhead Gunpowder. Hard, sweet and snotty all in one, Homesick features great melodies and lyrics with just the right amount of gruffness. There has been a lot to write about in the past couple of years - the war, the hurricane, the band's own coming of age - and this album captures it all. A must-have for fans of the old Lookout Records sound of the late `80s.
