4 out of 5 stars good but not the best.......2007-01-10

Testament has been my favorite metal band ever. Even though I loved Megadeth and Manowar too much at the time, I've always had a special love in Testament. It's mostly because of Alex Skolnick, who is one of Satriani's students, that created his own style and licks , without copying Satriani's. (Testament has never been the same after he left). and also Peterson, Clemente and Christian were monsters at their instruments, with Billy and his killing vocal, creating incredible music and lyrics. so why I gave 4 stars to this album?? There are masterpieces like "Souls of Black", "Legacy" and "Seven Days of May" in this album but, there are two or three songs that resembles each other. This album is worth to buy but not perfect as "the new order" and "practice what you preach"

5 out of 5 stars their worst album to date.......2006-01-15

out of testaments prime (the first four albums)this is easily their worst, but souls of black is still way better than anything after this album. the first three albums rule, but "souls" still kicks ass.

5 out of 5 stars Souls of Thrash!.......2005-09-16

This is a very underrated album I think, I think it's even better than The Legacy, don't get me wrong, I love The Legacy, but I think they got better each album, this was released in 1990 after the awesome "Practice What You Preach", pretty much the same formula, but it is effective, the production isn't as good as on Practice What You Preach, because the fans back then wanted it to sound like "The New Order" but it fits the music well, Chuck Billy is a great vocalist, and really shines on this album, the vocals are echoed, but like I said, it's the production, and it fits, the drums are pushed back, but you can still hear them well, Skolnick and Peterson work together great, just listen to Skolnicks solo on "Face in the Sky" you will find yourself air-guitaring, and again, Testament pull off another great ballad "The Legacy" which is nothing short of killer, Billys vocals REALLY shine on this one, and the music is great also, just listen to the intro, great solo too, other standout tracks "Falling Fast" "Seven Days of May" "Souls of Black" they are all good, but I've named the best in my opinion, I'd buy the album, I don't think you'll be dissappointed, THRASH!!!

5 out of 5 stars "Time is but a passageway trying to believe your life was sanity".......2005-08-30

I bought Souls of Black when it was new back in 1990. I was going through my metal period in high school (which never ended: the metal period, I mean, not high school) and I already had The Legacy and New Order by Testament which I liked but did not consider among my favorite albums. After seeing the video for the beautiful track "The Legacy" (not to be confused with the album by the same name) which incorporated the cool cover imagery, I rushed and bought Souls of Black and it quickly became one of my favorite metal albums. I did not (and still don't) notice anything rushed or under-produced about it. I just hear a solid thrash metal album with tracks so catchy (ie "Absence of Light" and the title track) I can sing along to them (I can't say that about most thrash albums). "Beginning of the End" might be considered a "filler" because it is a short instrumental but it is very cool with a Latin flavor, and it makes for a nice intro to the explosive "Face in the Sky." The only track I might consider semi-weak is "One Man's Fate" because I do not like the overall sound but even on this track there is aa highlight: kicking drums!

"Seven Days of May" deserves special mention. It is about the student-led protests held Tiananmen Square in Beijing, the People's Republic of China, between April 15, 1989 and June 4, 1989. The protest denounced China's economic instability and political corruption and was violently suppressed by the PRC government. This event was still very fresh when this album was released in 1990. On May 4, 1989, 100,000 students and workers peacefully marched in Beijing making demands for adherence to socialist principles of equality, and protesting government corruption. These demonstrations continued even after the government declared martial law on May 20. The Communist party leaders eventually sent troops and tanks to restore order. When these forces were confronted by Chinese workers in the streets of Beijing, a massacre ensued (in the words of Testament: "They tried to show a peaceful path then it turned into a blood bath / In the Square they plan the game That's when the tanks of the army came"). Even today, the Chinese government will not allow any tallies made to count the actual number of dead. So there is lyrical meat to the album. And by the way, the song kicks as do the others save for "The Legacy" which is a charming metal ballad about the discovery of one's mortality. Excellent all the way through, I recommend it without hesitation.

3 out of 5 stars Cut them some slack........2004-09-14

Souls of Black is not Testament's finest album. That much is true. However, it isn't a bad record. The truth behind this recording is that the band was rushed into recording it, so it would be released at the same time as a European "Clash of the Titans" tour, featuring Megadeth and Slayer. The band has never liked it. But, there are some good songs here. (Good old vinyl years) Side one is strong. So, the first six tunes are pretty good. And side two starts with Malpractice which is okay as well. The Legacy is also a very good song. So, there's enough here to give it at least 3 stars. Where Souls of Black falters is on the production end. The sound is too thin, and not loud enough. The drums are buried way back in the mix too often. The bass is also lost in some songs. It's hard to headbang to this album, because it's just not HARD, even if the songs are heavy. But, it does provide some decent listening for metal fans. It was definately, at the time, fairly progressive thrash metal. Not the worst album you could have in your collection.

Not the best metal band in the world, but they do deserve a lot more credit than they have been given. I love this band and they have a great style. Listening to this cd makes me want to go to Finland for the wintertime. Buy this cd, you won't be disappointed.

This is a good buy for two full discs of music. You really hear a band find it's sound and get much better in the process. And as they get better they hopefully will now get bigger. Some of the older stuff is muddy due to a limited budget I would guess, but some has some real doomy almost sorrow moments that I really like and wish they would incorporate more of. If you like black, death or other extreme metal with a progessive slant check this band out.

Product Description

This is the second release from the fantastic band from Ukraine which interleaves Celtic folk influences with the speed riffing and technicality of death and black metal. Originally released only in Ukraine, Bombworks Records has made this incredible CD available for the rest of the world to hear. This release features more Celtic influences and more melody than the first release, with a heavier emphasis on integrating the flute with the heavy guitars. It is also an enhanced CD, including as a bonus the video recorded for the incredible song "The Spring".

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Folk Metal!.......2006-05-27

Several years ago while surfing the Web I found a strange band by the name of Holy Blood. I downloaded one of their songs and was simply amazed at their style. This is an extremely talented Ukrainian folk metal band.

The songs on this album include:

1. Intro (instrumental)
2. To Heaven
3. The Spring
4. Jerusalem
5. I Flow Towards the Fate
6. Baptising of the Rus (instrumental)
7. In the Last Battle
8. Fair
9. Waves are Dancing
10. Outro (instrumental)

I like every single one of these songs. Each song is well crafted, and they aren't repetetive.

There are probably tons of bands out there that play folk metal now. I haven't heard that many folk metal bands so I can't really say if this is the cream of the crop. I have heard of an interesting German folk metal band called "Schandmaul" and I would recommend that band, although these two bands are completely different. They both play folk metal but that's the only comparison that can be made. On this album Holy Blood plays a mix of symphonic black death folk metal, whereas Schandmaul plays "just" folk rock metal.

Note: if you are thinking on purchasing the "The Wanderer" album by this band you need to know that it isn't the same style. It's a more brutal style of metal but it isn't folk metal at all. It's still good, but it's not the same and I don't want anyone to get disappointed.

Album Description

Wildly influential death metal legends SUFFOCATION return with Souls to Deny, their first full length album in nearly a decade. Masterfully controlled yet frightenly intense, Souls to Deny is a truly devastating display of technical death metal. Maniacally complex lead and rhythm guitar acrobatics intermix with dizzyingly proficient drum work, creating complex, savage riff collages. Often copied but never duplicated, SUFFOCATION remains at once intricately technical and immaculately heavy! Crushing brutality from the masters!!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I so didn't see this one coming.......2007-01-29

With Souls to Deny Suffocation have immediately risen to the top of my favourite Death Metal bands. In fact, genres aside, this is the most compelling album I've heard in the last six months album opener Deceit is a punishing, heavy locomotive rumbling down a tunnel to flatten the listener in its path. Suffocation understand the key to making death metal interesting is variation and texture; so to counter brutal tracks like Immortally Condemned, To Weep Once More starts the song off with a slow, steady groove, before quickly changing tempo in the buildup to the middle section when the guitar solos take off amid various changing drum rhythms. The approach is followed on the next tracks Surgery of Impalement and Demise of The Clone both containing intricate guitars seamlessly alternating between heavy palm mutes and tremolo picking topped off by more great solos. Everything is successfully anchored together by the bass, drums and vocal parts. The rest of the albums follow this pattern successfully culminating in a new version of 'Tomes of Acrimony' which, having been poorly recorded first time around, has now been given its due. The production helps the music define itself with every instrument accessible even the lower bass tones and the chemistry between the members is apparent as is their obvious relish in crafting and playing their songs. In fact it's this chemistry that makes the music work so well, each band member knows what to put in the songs to make them work.
Suffocation's legacy has significantly influenced the development of a genre, and I find it interesting that they can reform, be immediately back at the top of their game and in the process trample on the majority of bands they've influenced - I bet Death Metal is glad to have them back and I will definitely be seeking out more of their music.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential tech death.......2006-09-12

After forming in 1990, Suffocation were one of the first bands to fuse death metal with grindcore and complex song structures to form a completely new subgenre: brutal death metal. If that isn't a big enough accomplishment for the band to brag about, then making "Souls To Deny" in 2004 surely is. This is doubtlessly the band's finest release to date, and it's probably the quintessential technical death metal album.

Every song on this disc is loaded with pounding, crushing rhythms, scorching guitar leads, fret-board smoking riffs, hyper-speed, super technical blast beats, and evil, belching vocals. The walloping album opener, "Deceit," which has buzzsaw riffs and airtight drumming, is a pretty good representation of the album as a whole, but the two best songs on here are "To Weep Once More" and "Subconsciously Enslaved." The former track is highlighted by some Deicide-like bellows of "Father, why have you forsaken me?!", and a fairly long, ripping guitar solo, and the latter features a blistering guitar lead, head-rattling double bass drumming, and two wailing solos. Other standouts include the jackhammering title track, the downright bludgeoning "Surgery Of Impalement," and "Immortally Condemned," which is highlighted by thunderous drums, riffs which might very well melt the skin off your face, and another great, fairly long, mazey solo.

Death metal has rarely sounded this great, and it's doubtful that any band will ever make an album as technical or all around great as this one. If "Souls To Deny" isn't the finest technical death metal album in history, then it surely is the best since Cryptopsy's "No So Vile" was released in 1996. This is absolutely essential listening for all extreme music fans.

5 out of 5 stars three words: oh my word!.......2006-07-14

Suffocation literally knows how to tear it up! they are excellent. do me a favor and release another album, dudes. you really know how to stomp! these guys are wearing size-14 shoes.

3 out of 5 stars Long awaited return is a let down .......2006-04-25

I was thrilled when I heard Suffocation was going to be playing in my area (Long Island) after having been disbanned for about 6-7 years. Suffocation was in top form at The Downtown that night, and they even played two songs from Souls To Deny, which had not been released at that time. They played Deceit and Subconsciously Enslaved. I was pretty impressed at both songs, but since they were brand new, it was hard to get an accurate read on them. When I heard that Suffocation would be releasing a new album, I was very excited.....

SOULS TO DENY left me with mixed feelings. The album doesnt have the greatest sound: Franks vocals seem a little subdued, the drums seem a little sloppy sounding, and the guitar tone is rather thin. It reminds me of a mix of Breeding the Spawn (and its weak production) and Despise the Sun. I've heard some Demo versions of some of these new songs, and the sound on the Demo version was MUCH better. Deceit and Tomes of Acrimony are fine songs, but every other song is a little bland.

Overall, I wouldnt say that Souls to Deny is a bad album - its an average album by a great band.

5 out of 5 stars kings of NYC old-school death metal.......2006-04-17

when most of the originators of death metal come from either upstate NY or Florida, Suffocation represent their hometown of New York City and are one of the only bands from this area that play the old-school style of true extreme death metal. in my opinion, they are right up there with all the original godfathers of the genre, including Morbid Angel, Six Feet Under, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, and Malevolent Creation. I'm glad they decided to get back together after temporarily breaking up for a few years. Souls To Deny is powerful enough and brutal enough to compete with any of the extreme metal albums that have come out within the past few years. they are already hard at work finishing up their next self-titled release for Relapse records, due out late 2006. I'm sure it will be just as intense as STD. I can't wait.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2006-12-02

These guys really rock! Very good guitar solos, vocals, and songs. I am thankful for Mr. Frost for bringing back an old favorite, Pounding Metal. I got that song on a tape a long time ago and thought it was Lizzie Borden because that was what the tape was supposed to be. However, it turns out that was an Exciter song just thrown in on the end of the tape. Well, Seven Witches does an excellent version of it! They also do an amped up version of Bat Benetar's Hell Is For Children.

My only criticism is that there are no song credits or lyrics in the CD booklet. For all I know, the entire album is obscure cover songs except for the two tracks I recognize. However you slice it, it is still good power metal and Jack Frost and company know how to lay it down. Recommended.

Seven Witches featuring guitar god Jack Frost also of Metalium and Savatage. Seven Witches is basically a cross of the two. seven witches City of lost souls is very good metal. with good drumming, awesome riffs (that occasionally remind me of Overkill). and screaming vocals from Bobby Lucas. the vocals on this album remind me alot of old savatage and or old Metal Church. good album highly recommended good cover of Pat Benetar, and Exciter.

This is very, very heavy, very technical, creative and innovative death metal from a Christian band from Germany, who are just honest and sincere and don't try to force their beliefs down anyone's throat. Its as technical as Obituary, the vocals are deep, and very strong in the mix, not buried, riffs are medium to fast pace. The third song lasts over eight minutes and it is great. Best songs Come Closer and Existence.

The production is first class. The lyrics are nearly understandable. One song is in German, the rest in English. It can be ordered through Whilwind Records in Germany.

4 out of 5 stars tony martin para siempre!.......2003-09-22

3 out of 5 stars Tony Martin (ex Black Sabbath) on vocals!.......2003-04-28

Tony Martin (ex Black Sabbath singer) seem to be involved with many projects these days - Mollo/Martin "The cage I & II", Rondinelli's "Our cross, our sins", and this one: Empire. It's melodic (hard) rock and `tho it's not world class, it sure has it's good moments. Tony Martin have co-written every song on the album and he's voice is still very good. The material isn't cutting edge but it's rather attractive most of the time, like in the opening mid tempo rocker "One in a million" with its radio friendly chorus; the beautiful "Teenage deadhead" on which Martin deliver a soulful feeling with his voice. Other outstanding tunes are the faster "Big world, little man"; the catchy "Back in the light" and the slower "Did you ever love me". Critics may say it's all harmless pop metal, but if you're an AOR fan I believe you'll find Empire's "Trading souls" interesting. And if you're a fan of Tony martin you shouldn't hesitate to buy this album.

By the way, Neil Murray plays bass!

2 out of 5 stars Sloppy.......2007-07-16

I like almost all Death Metal bands, as they all have their own unique formula. "Deeds of Flesh" as mentioned by one reviewer, is boring, and I have to agree. Most of the songs use the same formula, and even though this is common is Most death metal, at least their are breaks or changes in most of death metals music. This is stale. The drummer never really changes up, it just the same ta ta ta ta on the snare, which is fine in some cases, but it just sounds sloppy. So does the guitar work. There are some OK things with this, but its below average, and you can do much better in the Death Metal genere then this. If you like this style of Death Metal, let me recommend Nile, Decrepit Birth, Decapitated, Incantation, or Suffocation. They are much cleaner sounding, still with the technical aspect, but much better musically......

5 out of 5 stars Crown Of Souls .......2007-07-14

Deeds Of Flesh is another criminally under-rated band in the brutal death metal genre. They still seem to be in the underground of the underground. This was my first Deeds cd that I bought and I have been hooked ever since! This cd is full of classicks!

The album opening title track is an instant classick. They don't have any guitar solos or anything but this band still manages to keep me interested thru the whole album. After several repeated listens, the stand out tracks to me are Crown Of Souls,Medical Murder,Hammer-Forged Blade,Forced Attrition,This Macabre Fetish,The Resurrected, and Crimson Offering, but the other 2 rule too!

Mike's drumming goes perfectly with the music. Erik's guitar riffs and lyrics match perfectly too. I love gore lyrics but this bands' lyrics are a little different in a good way. The vokills are excellent and you can actually understand what he says after a couple of listents.

If you like Technical Brutal Death Metal then pick this or any Deeds cds! Mark Of The Legion,Reduced To Ashes and Crown Of Souls are my favorites, but they are all excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Deeds of Flesh oh baby.......2007-07-03

Deeds...is a good band...this record is tuff and filled with amazing riffing...I can't wait until they cut another one...because I know it's going to be good...Tis the season to blast.

1 out of 5 stars ..boring.........2005-10-01

A good friend of mine is a huge fan of deeds and he has all of their albums so i get to listing to them all without buying and im sorry to say but deeds is boring as it gets for me and my friend gets mad when i say that but it's true...Deeds of flesh's" crown of souls" is bassicaly the same boring formula these guys have always used and its crap. Skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars increadible .......2005-05-30

Deeds of flesh are one of the most underrated bands in death metal, which is a crime in and of itself because they are so good. Crown of Souls marks the return of deeds in a most brutal fashion, the songs are more memorable then those found on reduced to ashes cd, and are more to the pointwhile still retaining the jaw droping and confusing arrangements that made mark of the legion a classic! The cd overall sounds great, i think the lead guitars could be turned up a little bit more but all in all no complaints. If you love death metal then this should be in your collection!
