Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2004-02-20
Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.
Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11
After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!
An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11
This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

The sound just chokes you..........2007-01-21
...with both hands out of the speakers.
Being a fan of Deadguy's "Fixation..." I quickly went for "She Loves Me..." and was floored by it. The steam roller aggression of Tim Singer's voice was like a homicidal hockey coach, and the playing of Keith Huckins and company was fantastic (track it down and listen to "Man-Thing" if you need an example).
As over reviewers have stated, it does make sense some what that the band parted ways, considering I don't think this recording would have been topped in any form. The group carried afterward for awhile as you can see, releasing the EP "Choke" featuring tracks "Preacher" and "Target Practice" that were culled from the "She Loves Me..." sessions that made up a 7 inch. The rest of "Choke" is great (and worth owning), but it still pales against the full length. Once Huskins left, it wasn't the same somehow. I guess Singer left and became a graphic designer (?). As the genre of hardcore moves on, there is so little that compares to this outfit. I sold most of my old stuff, but I'll never part with this one. It's my favorite.
If you look to the upper right side of the screen you can see that the CD is going fairly cheap, so really there is no reason not to own this.
You won't regret it.
a great, heavy album, amidst a sea of crap..........2004-12-28
Kiss It Goodbye were a great, heavy band. use whatever fancy musical term you want: noisecore, metalcore, blah blah blah. they were good, angry, heavy, and original. the rawness of their music had its charm, and their style was very unique, compared to alot of other bands that were on Revelation records at the time. even though I was a Deadguy fan, I actually like this album better. I was actually lucky enough to see these guys play live with their original line-up before they broke up. it was in 1998 at a place called Sea Seas in a little town called Moosic, right outside of Scranton,PA. I played guitar in one of the many bands that opened the show that night (and if anyone reading this were there, we were called Self Induced). right after their performance I went up to Keith the guitarist and shook his hand, commenting him on his amazing playing and sound. after that, I ran to an ATM, got some cash, came back, and bought this CD from one of the other guys in the band. and I'm glad I did.
Absolutely essential..........2003-11-26
It is the nature of noisecore bands to not stick around too long, and the demise of the superb Deadguy left many who were into this new and noisier brand of hardcore quite miffed. Fortunately Kiss It Goodbye didn't take very much time to fire up and blow away most any other band playing at that time. It had been years since Rorschach split, but when Tim Singer teamed up with Keith Huckins, Andrew Ghormley, and Tom Rusnak(all formerly of Rorschach), it felt like they had only been invisible for all that time. Gone was the claustrophobic, needle-nosed screech of Deadguy, but it was replaced with something more powerful, layered, and plodding. The spatial qualities of this record are amazing. The rhythm section here is one of the better that I've ever heard recorded, and when they lay down a ridiculous groove(see "We'll Burn That Bridge When We Get To It," or "Sick Day"), there is no ceiling for the damage that the guitar tones and cackled vocals can do. Tim had at this point refined his vocal style to outdo anyone who even remotely felt psychotic for one reason or another and ended up scaring the daylights out of a lot of weak-stomached hardcore fans. Very vicious. The subject matter on this record was seriously mature compared to the majority of youthful, scene-oriented hardcore bands, and that is just one reason why this album didn't fall to the wayside like so many hundreds of hardcore records before and since.
Nothing would've survived had they contined. RIP........2000-06-17
I love this band. I love these songs. They couldn't be touched when they first appeared and they still can't be touched long dead. They just possess that power to communicate on the level the most people can relate to. The savage insane animal man inside you and I sings these songs without ever really hearing them. Easlily some of the most itelligent, life shattering music to blacken the hardcore scene EVER. Not one bad cut all the way through. Tim Singer wails , moans and shakes the very ground. The guitars sear through flesh ,stomping and smothering with grotesque feedback. This is the sound of everyday moulded into a blunt weapon and wielded like the man holding the chair from the BlackFlag record. You will not hear anything this beautiful and maddening for a while. One of a kind and ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL. This is what it's all about.
Kiss It Goodbye is gone, but not forgotten..........1999-06-16
I'm in a band that played a show with K.I.G.B. It was the first time that I heard their music. I was totally blown away by their performance. I immediately bought their CD "She Loves me, She Loves Me Not". I would have to say that this album is one of the best representations of extreme heavy music. It's too bad that they broke up recently, but this album will always live on.

Great CD single!.......2002-07-22
This is a great cd single from Papa Roach. Here are my track reviews:
She Loves Me Not - Going back to the old school Papa Roach, with the more rappy vibe in it, but it's great 4.5/5
Naked In Front Of The Computer - Not a bad cover of the Faith No More Song. 4/5
Tightrope (rock version) - This is the version from Let 'Em Know, it isnt bad, but i prefer the slower one. 3.5/5
Blood Brothers (Live) - This is a good quality live song from the year 2000. It's faster than the cd version, which is pretty good. Not the best song on the single, but i never skip it. 3/5

Excellent ... but ..........2007-02-07
As a vintage G&S listener, I appreciated this collection but I think it would mostly appeal to the specialist-completeist. A newcomer to the genre would do well to get a full operetta DVD. (I prefer the OK BBC performances to the tarted up & modernised Australian ones.)
Old-comers probably already have all these tracks as part of their collection of vintage full operetta recordings.
But don't let my idiosynchratic views deter you if you really like G&S... but not to the extent of buying all the vintage full operetta versions.

CLASSIC PLASTIC.......2005-07-21
Gershwin CD is strangely lacking in atmosphere and reference, with over an hour of Gershwin's more classical side, including Michael Tilson Thomas conducting The Columbia Jazz Band's "Rhapsody in Blue", featuring Gershwin's original 1925 piano roll, Leonard Bernstein conducting The New York Philharmonic's "An American in Paris", and composer John Williams on guitar in "A Foggy Day". With song titles like, "Medly From The Woody Allen Film 'Manhatten", at just over three minutes, and "Medly From 'Porgy and Bess'", the CD is a classy cash cow thrown together by CBS Records. Tilson Thomas' "Three Preludes for Piano", stops and takes a dramatic musical breath in the context of these slam-bang offerings. Truly bland CD liner notes by Bobby Finn and Kay Swift, whoever they may be.
Musical pleasure.......2001-07-16
I have always loved the Gershwin music. It seems to Americana. When I first heard the recordings of the music from the piano rolls, I was fascinated. When I then heard this album with the jazz sound and the symphony sound combined with the pure sounds from the piano rolls, I was captured by the sound. The mighty ending of The Rhapsody in Blue is as powerful as this music can be. Add songs like Summertime and the Porgy N' Bess favorites and I find that this album is just the right combination of composer, performer and directors. Michael Tilson Thomas pulls forth from the group he is directing, a crisp and powerful sound. Bernstein needs no critique. If you are a lover of Gershwin and piano music, you can't miss with this.

Feyer's CD is a must have.......2007-01-28
So I purchase my Nano and then easily transfer much of my "must have" music library to the 8 Mega Black Nano. The Nano makes me want to hear all my music again as I work out, etc. I ordered "must have" Feyer's Gershwin from Amazon and was lucky to get the Gershwin CD. If only they could remaster all his works onto CDs at a lower price than the $100 plus I paid. Feyer is a top addition and it reminds me of the Stanhope days and his music magic that I wish to briefly tell you.
In the latter 70s, the Stanhope weekends were a joy, buttressed by Feyer's music. He held court and the audience was captivated. He was an excellent pianist with excellent trills in the high octaves, and nice contrast with the lower ones. The Gershwin CD the piece "I Got Rhythm" reminds one of small flames jumping lightly on a log. So light, so elegant, so much in rhythm. I would take my "A" dates to the Stanhope, including my future wife of 20 plus years. After the Met Opera or ballet, I would take my dates to the Stanhope. Usually two Kier Royals, supper, wine, and dessert would accompany George's fine music. Such a rich repertory and bottomless request well that he knew with top piano skill!
Missing on the CD was his singing and funny remarks. I recall him playing `Thank Heavens For Little Girls"... they are so helpless, and then he would pick some women from the audience and repeat the word " helpless' and the everyone would laugh. My dates were the younger women in the Stanhope back then and he tended to look at my dates.....and made them feel like a princess
The Stanhope was a bit expensive but a classy place. With George, it was worth every penny. I think Gunnar ( spelling?) was the head waiter. They knew you and you did not have to ask for a certain drink as they knew your need before your request. Unlike today, waiters are more of errand boys to the kitchens. George also knew your favorites in songs.
One thing that is not obvious, despite my Ivy MBA and a good undergraduate degree, one does not learn in early years the basic American songs of Porter, Gershwin, etc. Some of my dates knew many of the words to these songs from their social events. Hence for me it was a pleasant discovery and made me grateful to the mastery of George. It opened one's appreciation to the very rich music heritage of America.
The CD in ADD format was very clear; no his; and, the accompanying musicians were well heard in CD. Enjoy this CD!
One More Time.......2002-03-08
Anyone that likes solo piano, must have this one in their collection. Feyer was a superior pianist, and arranger. These are performances to LISTEN to. For alot less than a carton of ciggies, you can buy something good for you! Aloha
George Feyer Plays George Gershwin.......2001-04-21
Hours sped like minutes when sitting next to the keyboard of Feyer's Piano in the Stanhope. I only wish all of his albums could be re-released and a new generation might experience this rare talent. He played with consummate skill, gentle humor and a panache that I've been unable to find anywhere.
George Feyer Plays George Gershwin.......2000-12-26
This is undoubtedly one of the best recordings of popular Gershwin tunes. They are played with Feyer's european touch, but amazingly american in spirit. All his collections since 1951 ("Echoes of Paris", "Echoes of Broadway", "Echoes of Rome" etc.) should be re-mastered and released again, as well as his famous recordings collected in album "Cafe carlyle". It is a real music treasure.
This is the happiest music making imaginable........1999-10-24
It's been more than 40 years since I first ran across George Feyer's "Echoes..." series of recordings on the Vox label (Echoes of Paris, Echoes of Vienna, etc.) Every month I check to see if by some miracle these recordings have been reissued, but I doubt they ever will because of their original label. In the meantime we will make do with this excellent George Gershwin album, which seems to me to come closer to his old recordings than the other stereo-era Feyer recordings now available. But will some company out there PLEASE reissue his old mono VOX recordings and spread joy through the world!
