There's not a big precedent for German bands succeeding in the United States, the '80s bombast-rock of the Scorpions notwithstanding. Rammstein, however, may be the macho men to get the job done, at least in a concert setting. Decidedly Teutonic and militant in sound and lyrics--they sing in German and their commanding semi-industrial metal is compelling--Rammstein garnered rock-radio airplay for the catchy sing-along "Du Hast," which translates here as "You Hate" and bears a striking musical resemblance to the Golden Earring tune "Twilight Zone." While
Sehnsucht's 11 songs are solid, it's the live shows where everything gels. There, KISS pyrotechnics and disturbing NIN-like images, for example, complement Rammstein's forceful music. Without the visual stimuli,
Sehnsucht (which means "longing") is still a strong effort, but live is where the album's Germanic gems really shine.

Good German Rock.......2007-08-06
Well I'm half German so I have every right to review this. Rammstein was the most successful German band in the states since Scorpions. 8I can understand German, but I can't speak it, but I do know Old English, a dialect of German. The throbbing industrial beats, ripping guitar and hate lyrics combine into a powerful sound. Du Hast which You hate me, got some MTV play and broke them in America. They are notorious to being one of the only bands school gunmen Harris and Klebold really did like. That being said, it only adds to the outrageous industrial shock appeal of a band whose novelty wore off quickly but continues to record to success as Germany's premiere rock band.
Best German Band Ever?.......2007-07-17
A new Rammstein album is always a refreshing change of pace from all the regular stuff that is released in a given year. This album is probably my favorite, as it has the best heavy/softer ratio. It also has their most popular song, "Du Hast", but the entire album can be listened to without skipping songs. It is great for when you want to do some headbanging and sounds great thumping out of your stereo. The fact that they sing 99 % of the time in German might turn you off, but there is no denying that these guys are very talented musicians and they have carved out a niche for themselves in the heavy music scene. The sound quality is excellent. Very good production.
A Fine Introduction.......2007-05-18
Sehnsucht was the first CD by Rammstein that I got and I have loved them ever since. In fact, listening to their music is why I speak a fair amount of German right now.
The first five tracks, including "Engel" ('Angel') with wonderful backup vocals by Bobo (an wonder in voice and body), are great. The sixth, "Bück Dich" ('Bend Over') is not the hottest track; nor are "Eifersucht" ('Jealousy') and "Spiel mit Mir" ('Play with Me'), although they're better. For a better version of "Spiel mit Mir," listen to "Live aus Berlin." "Klavier" ('Piano') and "Alter Mann" ('Old Man') are fantastic tracks. The last listed track, "Küss Mich" ('Kiss Me') is a great finale. However, the copy that I got has a bonus track, "Stripped," which is a cover of a Depeche Mode song (and much better than the original, if I may say so myself--and I may, because I'm writing this review).
While this is not exactly my favorite of all of the Rammstein CDs, it is a fine introduction to a prolific band.
Incredible Album.......2007-05-01
Okay, here's a tip: As a fluent German speaker, I understand their lyrics. I also know that most of the translations you find online are dreadful. Rammstein uses a highly idiomatic language from Berlin, and it's rather colorful. If you don't get it, it's hard to translate. "Du Hast" means "You Have". The song, however, has to do with rejection. Hence, "You Hate". Sehnsucht means "longing", and that's what this album is all about.
Sehnsucht is Rammstein's first "commercial" album. It lyrics are painful, and for the most part about, well, "sehnsucht". The rhythms are a blend of punk, techno, heavy metal, and industrial. There's a primal feel to all of their music, and this album is certainly a good example of it.
One reviewer said it's repetative. So what? So is Phillip Glass. So is Iron Maiden. The Beatles had trouble getting away from a I-IV-V-I progression. Rammstein is doing it for effect. This is very sexual music, and the rhythms reflect that. (If you understood the German, and Berlin idioms, it's a whole lot easier to pick this up.)
Rammstein's lyrics are no worse, and are probably better, than most metal bands floating around the world today. "Du Hast" hit the airwaves the same time as Korn's "adidas", the lyrics of which are as juvenile as they get.
Rammstein is melodic, dark, primal, and, sometimes very witty. They mask quite a few things in ironies, a literary device the Germans haven't forgotten. Check out this album, and then go pick up the other ones.
Sterile.......2007-03-23
I dont get why everyone loves this band. Their music is boring and repetetive, the lyrics are stupid beyond belief, and worst more, they rip-off Type O Negative to the EXTREME!
When I used to live in Russia and they played their, people who listen to pop actually went to the show! So I guess its better calling Rammstein a pop-metal band, considering true German metal is Kreator, Sodom, and Necrophagist.
Avoid this garbage, get Kreator's Endless Pain and Necrophagist's Epitaph.

One of my favorite recordings ever.......2007-06-08
Elly Ameling is in glorious voice, and Demus's instrument here is fortepiano, which suits the music exquisitely. Der Hirt auf dem Felsen alone is worth the price, but all the Schubert and Schumann songs are well chosen. I'm so happy that this 1965 performance is available on CD.
wonderful.......2007-03-21
I also owned this on vinyl and have wonderful memories of this perfect blend of voice, clarinet and piano. Truly haunting melodies and the greatest musical integrity. Can't wait to get this one next month!
Truthful & Sincere Singing.......2006-11-25
Ameling's reading of Schumann and Schubert Lieder is sincere and noble, at times even awe-inspiring. There's always something genuinely beautiful, a sense of respect for music itself, when she sings with her etherial yet warm voice.
The sublimity of "Mein schonster Stern" only makes this CD worth purchasing. Her Schumann recordings are so scarce now that it is joy to find 19 Schumann Lieder both well known and obscure gems on this disc. Accompanied by an original master piano of Schubert's days. Recorded in 1965/67.
Beautiful.......2006-11-11
What a gorgeous voice! It's a true delight to listen to this set.
More than just a pretty voice ..........2006-09-17
It is tempting to dismiss Ameling as a "pretty voice" and reach for Elisabeth Schwarzkopf instead, as a previous reviewer suggests. Ameling's interpretations place a premium on simplicity and directness - two traits that are often undervalued. To my ears, however, Ameling's self-effacing approach is ideally suited to lieder performance. Schwarzkopf's recording with Edwin Fischer on EMI, while admirable in its own way, is too fussy for my tastes. Take, for example, the rendition of "Im Fruehling" by each singer: where others find Schwarzkopf to be intense and dramatic, I find her to be mannered and melodramatic. Ameling's version strikes closer to the heart and shows greater insight and intellect, in my view. Note: on this CD, Ameling's ravishing voice is at its peak.

Fabulous Ute. Buy both German and English versions!!!.......2005-10-04
`Berlin Cabaret Songs' by Ute Lemper are issued as part of London recording company's `Entartete Musik' series or music suppressed by the Third Reich. One of the very best things about this issue is the fact that Ms. Lemper and London have issued the album in two versions. One is in the original German and one is sung entirely in English.
For starters, I strongly suggest you listen to both, but if you simply have no interest in listening to the German version, I will reassure you that the English performance is musically virtually identical to the German. The instrumentals almost sound as if they were done Kareoke style, with Ms. Lemper's English or German mixed in afterwards. I'm almost certain this was not actually done, as the translations probably changed a few things here and there about the meter of the lyrics, but I could find nothing in the instrumental or vocal performances to prefer in one over the other, except for the genuine experience of hearing it the same way as the cabaret audiences in Berlin would hear it.
Ms. Lemper's English interpretations, as they are in all her earlier albums, is impecible. It also seems to be about as accent free as you can imagine. Not only is it free of German inflections, it is free of a British accent as well, so it should sound great to American ears.
The first thing which strikes me about the lyrics of these songs is that to my ear, there is practically nothing which is critical or even satiric of a specific government. There is not even much which is sexually explicit, let alone lewd. Some pieces from Kurt Weill in `Mahagonny' may be more objectionable than most songs in this album. One thing that tells us is exactically how extremely conservative the Nazis were about any art whatsoever. The most strident politically oriented song is in favor of women's rights and makes no mention of the Nazi government or any other political party for that matter.
The only weakness of the album may be that virtually all this material is unfamiliar to the average listener, so we don't have the pleasure of seeing how Ms. Lemper does a new version of, for example, `Bilbao Song' or Jacques Brel's `Amsterdam'. But then, I relish any chance whatsoever to hear Ms. Lemper sing. She is still fresh and free of the kind of syrupy sweetness we get from, for example, Barbra Streisand, these days from her `Guilty Pleasures' album.
Eine Schoene Album!.......2004-09-25
Wow! This beautiful and immensely talented dame knows how to thrill. The album is absolutely superb. And auf Deutsch! There are many jazzy and big band type numbers and some that are a little more folky. But the satire, the humour, the depth of the lyrics, along with the pure artistry and sophistication Ute Lemper brings to the material is quite refreshing, despite the fact that some uncomfortable and depressing topics are covered. What a relief, a modern artist that encourages her audience actually to think! Thank you so much Ute for such a treasure and bringing these important songs to our attention; with all that is going on in our politics and the world these Berlin songs are even more poignant for our times than one may suppose.
English version available?.......2001-07-05
I recieved this disc for review when I was a radio station DJ about three years ago. However the disc I got, which was on Polygram, was in English. So try to get the English disc if you don't speak German - the translations are great, you'd think the songs were written in English. It has the same title I think, if it is still available. One other reviewer here said that he found the album more relevant to his life than the entire top 40 and I say 'hear, hear' to that. And Ms. Lemper's heffy Cherman eccent is delightful!
300% RECOMENDADO
Stellar.......2000-10-29
A beautiful album, dripping with emotions: longing, irony, cynicism, sarcasm, love (yes, love), anger, humor. And Ute Lemper transmits those emotions like no other performer I know. At least some of the song writers/composers fled to the US to escape Nazi Germany, and had distinguished careers here, too. The songs are beautiful, with meaningful lyrics that aren't just the blindingly obvious ideas and sentimentality offered by a lot of recent "political" songs.

The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19
Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

Delightful!.......2005-12-24
Personally, I think some of Mozart's best work are his songs for voice and piano. I think this CD is the best recording of Mozart's lieder that you will find. Bonney sings in a very pure, tender, smoothe, yet still rich tone. Her diction is impeccable, her technique is spotless as she glides from one phrase to the next, making it seem as though it couldn't be easier. And of course the music itself is absolutely beautiful (as most Mozart is).At times it can be charming and delightful, sometimes its most moving and sentimental and romantic, and sometimes it takes on a darker tone. And one other thing I like about this album is that it is soothing and relaxing...something to listen to while you're sleeping, eating, taking a bath, or while you're just trying to unwind. I give this album 5 stars, and I think if you buy this album, you won't regret it.
One of the best recordings you'll find.......1999-09-13
For those familiar with Bonney's work, it should come as no surprise that this disc is a treasure. If you prefer meatier, more dramatic voices, stay away. But if you love fluid, supple subrettes, this is the disc to buy. Bonney's silvery tone and flawless technique, her musicianship and consummate collaboration with Parsons, make it quite simply one of the best recordings you'll find.

There's not a big precedent for German bands succeeding in the United States, the '80s bombast-rock of the Scorpions notwithstanding. Rammstein, however, may be the macho men to get the job done, at least in a concert setting. Decidedly Teutonic and militant in sound and lyrics--they sing in German and their commanding semi-industrial metal is compelling--Rammstein garnered rock-radio airplay for the catchy sing-along "Du Hast," which translates here as "You Hate" and bears a striking musical resemblance to the Golden Earring tune "Twilight Zone." While Sehnsucht's 11 songs are solid, it's the live shows where everything gels. There, KISS pyrotechnics and disturbing NIN-like images, for example, complement Rammstein's forceful music. Without the visual stimuli, Sehnsucht (which means "longing") is still a strong effort, but live is where the album's Germanic gems really shine. --Katherine Turman

Schuberts' Songs Without Words - Mischa Maisky.......2006-01-07
This is pure velvet chocolate. What a relaxing and uplifting experience! Such finesse and teamwork between Mischa and his accompanist. This is one I listen to frequently and deeply. If cello is your love this album is for you.
One longs for the words, but the sounds are lovely.......2005-11-27
Maisky does his best to imitate a voice in these cello transcriptions of 14 Schubert lieder. (Some of the most famous--Die Forelle, Nacht und Traum--are mixed in with lesser known songs.) In that regard he is very successful--he knowss how to inflect with his bow the same words and syllables a singer would inflect. And his tone is romantic and tender throughout. Yet at some level this is Schubert as background music, and that's not fair to the composer's genius. Schubert was the greatest master at setting words to music, so let's not deprive him of that.
Another way to hear the beauty of Franz Schubert.......2004-10-30
SCHUBERT: SONGS WITHOUT WORDS is an elegant recital by pianist Daria Hovora and cellist Mischa Maisky that allows us to hear Schubert songs, beautifully rich as they are with the texts as sung by many of our finest singers, here solely for the instrumental line. Somehow the interplay between melody and accompaniment (always an equal partnership in Schubert's hands) is heightened by this experience.
Not that the entire album is appropriated by the cello standing in for a vocalist: the opening work is "Sonata for Arpeggione and Klavier" and is one of the highlights of the CD. But just listen to the performances of 'Standchen', 'An die Musik' and 'Du bist die Ruhe' and hear the extraordinary marriage between the piano and cello, singing as beautifully as any other version. This is one of those CDs that bears keeping out for multiple listenings in the late evening. Grady Harp, October 2004
sing a little song for me.......2004-03-09
Substituting the cello for voice in Schubert's songs may have been an enticing idea, but for me one that fell flat on too many of his nursery rhyme simple songs that would have benefited from a nuanced and inflected voice - and for heaven's sake, in this day and age of advanced editing, production, and mastering, must we put up with the non-musical bow scraping so evident without an obscuring orchestra throughout this recording? The Arpeggione Sonata is great fun...the dancing tunes remind one of Viennese naked drunken frolickers...or maybe not.
wonderful performances, great recording...........2002-08-15
OK, I own a zillion CD's but if I were headed to the provervial desert isle...this would be one to be sure to slip into one of my wallet sleeves.
First off, the music is unbelievably beautiful -- you get a first class performance of the Arpeggione. Maisky's tone just melts.
But then, there's the addition of the Schubert songs - and here's where this album is peerless.
I'd recommend this recording to anyone who loves cello music, Schubert or just frankly is looking for some new repertoire -- a wonderful gift for that classical music friend you don't know what to give.

One of the best of the Masterworks series.......2007-07-06
Brilliant Classics' "Masterworks" series, if you can get them cheaply (and currently they go for about $1/CD from Amazon's France Web site), are a great way to amass a significant library of the works of several great computers. The production values and the performances themselves are uneven, and the interpretations are not always historically-informed (unlike the bulk of Brilliant's "Complete Editions" of the works of Bach and Mozart). But there are numerous gems in the rough in The Masterworks, and the economic value is unsurpassed, even if you were to throw away half of the CDs in each set.
You're unlikely to throw away much of this Schubert collection though. This seems to be the finest of the Masterworks sets, with a succession of solid, often first-rate performances of most of the major Schubert works. Here's what you get:
- The symphonies, performed by The Hanover Band in a historically-informed style. Very interesting performances perhaps marred by an odd recording balance that makes the woodwinds sound distant. Takes up four CDs
- The six Latin masses. Also the Deutsche Messe in the version with wind instruments. Five CDs in all
- Edison Denisov's completion of Schubert's unfinished dramatic work Lazarus (2 CDs, Helmuth Rilling's premier recording)
- The last four string quartets (including the Quartettsatz) with #9 thrown in. Also the octet, piano quintet ("The Trout"), string quintet and both piano trios. In short all the canonical chamber works. Performances are strong, and well recorded
- Two CDs of violin/piano duets, including Op. 137 and Op. 162
- 19 of the 21 "canonical" piano sonatas (missing #7 and #12) as well as the Moments Musicaux, Impromptus, German Dances, Wanderer Fantasy and several other piano works, 11 CDs in all. As with the chamber music, the performances and recordings are strong, often stunning
- Two CDs of piano duets, including the Divertissements and D. 617
- Song cycles: Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, Schwanengesang, and four CDs of standalone songs, including such "standards" as Erlkönig and Gretchen am Spinnrade. The singers are a bit uneven here, ranging from standouts Robert Holl, Deitrich Fischer-Dieskau and John Shirley-Quirk to the somewhat shrill Arleen Augér
Missing from the collection is Rosamunde, and a number of famous songs: Die Forelle (The Trout), Death and the Maiden, Ellens Gesang III (the so-called Ave Maria, D. 839), Der Hirt auf dem Felsen and Der Wanderer. But you do have almost all the important instrumental works, and most of the vocal works generally considered to be essential, with some padding added in the form of minor works such as the parochial Deutsche Messe, the German Dances, and the modernist-informed completion of Lazarus by the 20th Century Russian composer Denisov.
As with the other Masterworks sets, there are no program notes. You'll need to do your own research. Answers.com is a good starting point for Schubert compositions. There are also no song texts or translations provided, so again you'll need to track down your own. Try "The Lied and Art Song Texts Page" for lieder lyrics and translations. Hunt down a good price on this collection, browsing one of Amazon's European sites if necessary, and treat yourself to many hours of lovely music for the cost of a modest night out.
Will not buy this.......2007-03-16
I can't see D965 or D945 on this 40 disks worth of Schubert. Bizarre! There are so many great songs missing it scares me.
Worth it!.......2006-12-19
One of the best in "The Masterpices" series. Many of the discs (the symphonies in particular) were licensed from Nimbus and other full-line labels. Not all that long ago these discs would have set you back $18 to $20 a piece. That said, I still wouldn't part with my Hyperion collection. 40 CD's at this price... you can't go wrong.
Great way to jumpstart a schubert collection.......2006-12-19
Hartmut Holl, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Stephanie Brown, and Jaime Laredo as well as the Stuttgart Bach Collegium performing Schubert are hardly "left-behind artists and ensembles" as the previous naysayer states. These are licensed from major label releases and from the original masters issued at a bargain price, especially for the number of discs you get. Sound quality ranges from good to excellent. Good for all Schubertians and anyone who wants to jumpstart a Schubert collection.
Better to Pick a Few First-rate Performances.......2006-11-14
This is a bargain in dollar/listening time ratio, but who cares? There are many second-rate performances by left-behind artists and ensembles. Obviously the economics of resurrecting disks that don't require royalties has been the driving factor of selection. (On the other hand, the complete edition boxed sets of Bach and Mozart, which you'll find if you look, are stupendous successes artistically.)

This record is most notable for its performances. Kirchschlager's singing is ravishingly beautiful and deeply expressive; the pianists and other instrumentalists are all first rate. Its content seems designed less for consistent musical quality and a balanced program than for variety and popular appeal. Yet the predominantly slow songs induce a certain monotony, and Mozart and Menotti, Brahms and Broadway musicals make strange stylistic bedfellows. However, many gems stand out in the mix: the two Brahms songs with viola, in which the renowned Yuri Bashmet is unfortunately almost inaudible; two Schubert Cradle Songs, one famous, one unknown; several enchanting Spanish songs; a Haydn arrangement of a Welsh lullaby better known as "All through the Night"; a lovely romantic song by Zemlinsky; and a lush, soaring one by Miguel Kertsman written for Kirchschlager and just right for her expressively inflected voice. She identifies with every idiom and pours so much care and affection into each song that one can well imagine a loving mother singing to her child, and indeed the record is dedicated to her little son. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Gentle crossover that gets a bit sleepy.......2006-06-01
When Sony's artist executives were German, they tried to promote the young Austrian mezzo Angelika Kirchschlager, but because of her difficult name (I am guessing) and the slackening classical music market, she never caught on. Today Kirchschlager is a star in Europe, and one sees her name on the Met roster. This, her second CD, is a gentle recital of lullabies, made more varied by adding Broadway tunes into the mix and bringing in star musicians like John Williams on guitar and Yuri Bashmet on viola.
The result is winning and thoroughly professional. Kirchschlager sings especially well in English, with a hybrid British-American accent but almost no German mannerisms. The closest comparison in terms of high mezzos would be with von Otter, and Kirchschlager's voice is at least as beautiful. But she lacks von Otter's imaginaiton, and after a while everything sounds a bit too square and placid--after all, these songs may be for babies, but the intended audience is also adults who go to lieder recitals, isn't it?
An Example of When Crossover Works.......2006-01-09
Angelika Kirchschlager is well known on the operatic stage and in chamber and orchestral programs where her forte is Mozart and Bach. Hers is a voice creamy rich and produced with incredible intelligence. She is also a communicator - in recital, in opera, in anything she does. It comes as no surprise then that an artist of this caliber (or her agent....!) is able to set the standard for the now ubiquitous 'crossover album' that most of the major singers find it necessary to make to gather in more admirers.
Selecting a wide variety of lullabies with varying settings feels so natural in Kirchschlager's elegant mezzo-soprano voice. Other artists have produced recitals of lullabies: Dawn Upshaw and Richard Goode immediately come to mind. But in this album, though not all of the works are of genius quality, Kirchschlager gives each her considerable talent and the result is a little night music that is equally as lovely for adults as for the intended audience of children (and of course their parents...).
With fine support from the London Metropolitan Ensemble, pianists Roger Vignoles and Helmut Deutsch, guitarist John Williams and violist Yuri Bashmet among others, Kirchschlager offers a rich variety of songs from Mozart, von Weber, Haydn, Brahms, Schubert, Canteloube, de Falla, Copeland, Sondheim, Rogers and Hammerstein and Zelimsky. And no matter the language or the setting they all work. This is an album to cherish and share and raises the respect for Angelika Kirchschlager even higher. Highly Recommended. Lullabies for All Ages.......2005-07-13
I bought this CD as a gift for my first grandchild to introduce her to the world of classical music. But when I played it, it enchanted me and my grandchild's parents even more than it did the baby. Angelika Kirschlager is a young Austrian mezzo-soprano who had previously been unknown to me. She sings these simple songs with a beautiful round warmth of tone.
The twenty selections on this CD include Brahms famous lullaby together with two lesser-known songs of Brahms accompanied by piano and viola. Schubert's two lullabies are included, and they are melting. There is a Mozart song (the theme of which he used in the third movement of his final piano concerto) and a Haydn arrangement of the Welsh folk -song "All Through the Night", which features an accompanying trio of violin, cello, and piano.
Aaron Copland's arrangement of "All the Pretty Little Horses" will delight young listeners, and there are songs by Richard Rogers, Steven Sondheim, C.M. Von Weber, and others to fill out an enchanting CD of music and dreams. Ms Kirschlager's singing is the highlight of this CD. She is accompanied well by a variety of pianists and by performers on the guitar, violin, cello, and flute. Texts and translations for the songs are included in the liner notes.
Although I bought this CD for my granddaughter, others dear to me have expressed interest, and I will be buying another copy.
Thanks to my Amazon friend Scott Morrison for recommending this CD and to the other perceptive reviewers of this lovely music.

A Wonderful Gift for a Baby!.......2005-02-15
Our family has just been blessed with a new grandson and one of my very thoughtful friends had the brilliant and generous idea to send the baby a copy of this wonderful collection of lullabies and nightsongs done so stunningly by the marvelous German mezzo, Angelika Kirchschlager. I am happy to report that the very first selection, Schubert's 'Wiegenlied' ('Cradle Song'), seemed to make him smile, even at his tender age. This bodes well for his developing discriminating musical taste because Ms Kirchschlager is a terrific singer. Her various accompanists provide sensitive support for her lovely and perfectly managed voice. She sings with impeccable diction in several languages and even in English I don't pick up any accent at all.
I must point out, however, that Amazon has listed the contents of this disc in an order different from that on the CD, but the musical samples they provide do match the titles listed.

Voice of an Angel.......2000-05-02
I was first introduced to Ms. Kirchlager three years ago and was instantly impressed. Her sumptuous voice and incredible beauty make her a delight to listen to, time and time again. When Night Falls, is only the most recent of what promises to be a long and impressionable career. From the ever popular "Edelweiss" to the easily recognizable "Wiegenlied", Ms. Kirchschlager approaches each song with the same heart-felt emotion as if she were singing to her own child. I have often listened to her CD late at night to help myself fall into my own sweet dreamland of "The Little Horses".
