Oh boy.......2003-03-04
Goose bump city listening to the harmonies swoops and swoon.
WOW!.......2002-01-26
This cd is a must have if you enjoy different kinds of music, or even just jazz! I wish I were in this group, it's so tight! This has become my favorite cd, and before this, I was hardly a jazz fan! I wish they would do some more!
The best jazz vocal group around.......2001-09-28
This recording was the Real Group's first release targeted directly at American audiences. (Some of their previous CDs are primarily done in Swedish.) One cannot say enough about the quality of the voices, the arrangements, the performances, and the recording quality.
The group is a descendent of the genre created by the Swingle Singers and Singers Unlimited (SU). They have all the musical talent of the Swingles, and the high-quality jazz arrangements of SU (although the Real Group's voices are better than SU).
This recording is a pure delight. Completely a cappella (although you'd swear they snuck in a percussionist -- it's actually mouth-sounds a la Bobby McFerrin). Not only do they have terrific voices, but the great ears that are required to sing these marvelous arrangements. Some of the singing is reminiscent of high-voltage big-band arrangements ("It Don't Mean a Thing", "Flight of the Foobirds"); other cuts are so serenely seductive that they will melt the heart of stone ("Body and Soul", "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?"). In addition to "normal" singing (i.e. words), they throw in a healthy helping of excellent scat singing -- both solos and ensemble scat.
If you're new to vocal jazz, get this CD first. Then their "One for All", which is as good. And then perhaps their Live in Stockholm, and some old SU (if you can find it). Rockapella doesn't compare. The only group that can come close is Take 6.
Buy This Album.......2001-01-11
I've been in jazz singing groups for about two years now and I'm just getting into listening rather than singing and I am amazed! The first night that I had this c.d. I listened to it twice. The flow of the voices is so amazing, it's like being caught up in the waves of the open sea and rather than being frightning, it's relaxing. You can just close your eyes and get so caught up in it. My only coplaint is that I wish there was more music on the c.d.! I was especially impressed with "Kristallen Den Fina".
How do you say "WOW" in Swedish?.......2000-05-02
Shades of "Singers Unlimited" and that is saying something. Absolutely "awesome". "Acappella" at its best. Unfortunately the CD is only 51:49 playing time, I could take a lifetime listening to this talented group. This CD is under lock and key with my SU, Hi-Los and Four Freshmen classics. Get your kleenex ready when you listen to cut #9, "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life"? The entire world should take time out and listen, what wonderful therapy for us all.

Keep it away from me.......2005-06-10
'Unreal' is the right title for this awful CD! I bought it for the Lincoln car commercial music, which is just a short portion of this recording. The rest is pure junk! I can't even give it away, because I'm embarassed. I will throw it in the thrash. You can't call this music, just a repetitious noise.
if only more music tasted this good.......2004-01-04
Mr scruff has released an album less what's considered "dance" and more a sublime concoction of groves and beats.
His classical training as a muscian and extensive collection of vinyl, cleartly influnced this creation.
Ranging from the lushious composition of midnight feats and honey dew to the quirky and downright bizzarre i.e "fish" and "shanty town".
This Album truly is mood music of the highest calibre; warm, pleasant and relaxing...(but don't mistake this for a chill out album). A ray of sunshine for anytime day or night.
somehow 5 stars seems barely adequate.
Good Music.......2003-11-14
This is the 1999 release - Mr. Scruff's Keep it Unreal. I remember in 99', Keep a Move on was big in the cafe's, etc. Heck, my first exposure to the cut was on a Hotel Costes cd. However over the past year or so, the advertising execs **discovered** the cut and probably figured the jazzs amples in the cut mixed in with the electronica and beat would be the perfect way to promote the luxury division of Ford, Lincoln, to the new and old school and emphasis the class. I don't know why, but I always get a little disappointed to hear some cuts I like pop up on some commercials like that, but so be it. That's how a lot of others get turned onto the music - if not for the product they're being used for. ("Bossa Per Due", "Rennaisance Affair", "Porcelain", etc.)
But... who can blame Lincoln? It's true! That's what the cd really is - another look into nu-jazz as done by Mr. Scruff. But don't think that that's the only cool track on this release. You have a light intro, followed up with Get a Move On. But Midnight Feast is a solid cut, Honeystew has a pretty fly beat to it, and my favorite cut is the total coolness of "So Long", which is really why I picked this one up. The keyboards and xylophone are great - reminds me of two opposites a London night, or a sun-drenched day lounging at the beach. It's followed up by another sweet nostalgic track with the touch of spunk needed for it's title: "Chipmunk".
So pick this one up! I didn't fall for every track - some of the end songs just didn't grab me. But I'd have to say if you're a fan of Jaffa's Elevator cd, you'll probably dig this one too.
Moondog redux.......2003-10-10
If you like Get a Move On which is used in Lincoln Navigator commercial, hear the original from Moondog, called Bird's Lament.
VERY UNREAL SCRUFF...I MEAN, STUFF!!!.......2003-09-03
I consider myself a little more open-minded to muisc these days...stuff I listen to now, I wouldn't have dared to listen to back in my days of playing hip-hop and new jack swing. Mr. Scruff definitely wouldn't have made the cut back then either. Now, however I can dig what he's going for...and although some of the tracks lose you on "Keep it Unreal" and seem too obscure for their own good--i.e. songs 2,3 and 10, the set is still worthy of purchase and repeat listenings--especially tracks 3,4,5,8,13 and 14. Every other song takes some getting used to, but in time if you're a true Mr. Scruff fan, they'll grow on you. Still, "Trouser Jazz", despite what the reviews say, is a much more consistently brilliant effort from Mr. Scruff and a less somber one as well.
************************
What was I thinking when I wrote the above review? After listening to it with a more open mind, and on a far more superior car stereo than the stereo on my computer, I realize that "Keep It Unreal" is actually the SHHHHHHH!!! Now, with that being said, I feel much, much better!

Customer Reviews:
Definitely a Must-Own.......2006-12-07
"The Unreal Never Lived" is Yob's fourth and, lamentably, final album. All of their albums are distinctive while still carrying their trademark sound. If there is a heavier, trippier, better Stoner/Doom Metal act around then I have yet to hear it.
There's not one thing I would change about this album except maybe add more songs. The production is amazing: totally intense and psychedelic and absolutely worthy of comparisons to the greatness of Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd. Slow, thick, brilliantly understated riffs. Haunting, awe-inspiring vocals. The bass and percussion sound exactly as they should. This is the only band I've known that can make long intros enjoyable!
I cannot imagine how any fan of the genre could be disappointed by this album. It does what it's supposed to do: It leaves you hungry for more! YOB FOREVER!!
Fantastically heavy and psychedelic - of epic proportions.......2006-10-13
Yob is one of the finest doom/sludge bands out there, mixing Sabbath-esque riffs with ethereal psychedelic soundscapes and more modern metal grunt. The songs here aren't variations on a riff, but journeys through syrupy creativity. If you like your music heavy, this is a cd worth checking out!
Swansong of this pioneering metal band........2006-06-05
Simply the finest metal band in the past few years. This band shows it's influences on it's sleeve while remaining completely unique. The combination of mikes low and high vocal histrionics, his exquisitely heavy and psychedelic guitar playing, and the bass and drum assault is perfect. And those songs!!! Some might be turned off by the long track lengths, but rest assured, not a moment is boring. Instead, the listener is left in awe as each moment is used to let the track breath and excel into an always surprising and fantastic climax. If you need some metal, and are up for something unique and groundbreaking, try YOB. This band has been sadly ignored, and hopefully will gain more attention even though they have ended their fantastic run.
Incredible.......2005-10-27
This group is an incredible Doom Metal band for anyone who likes metal music this is a must!! Long epic songs that will blow you away, melt your speakers and all that good stuff so order this and all their others.

Buddha + Doometal = Brilliance.......2005-08-25
Wow, what an epic slab of doom here. This Portland, OR trio has actually added a unique testament to the doometal canon. Their last cd was awe inspiring and so is this. Four songs in 55 minutes with the longest being 20 minutes (a true journey into mindbending aural assaults). If you crave originality and music that may stomp you into a trancendental metal state, this is the one (and pick up the last one too!)

I miss Billy!.......2007-06-07
The early '80's...fake ID...and some symmetry in my play! Those were the days at Lung Fung on 82nd in Portland dancing to Billy's rockin self. We went to every event we could find: those LaBamba nights were unreal and he was our god. I can still see him with just one spot on him center stage "I'm walking down a rocky road..." Billy Rancher was the best thing to happen to Portland. I miss those nights; I miss Billy. This CD is a must-have for rockers...even those who are 45 like me. Get your upstroke down and buy this CD. Buy it for those long car rides when you sing until you fog up the windows. Buy it in memory of an amazing talent who died too young.
The Mayor said we'd all have it made if we get the Upstroke Down!.......2007-02-24
I was a high school student in the early 80's in a Portland suburb when Billy was at his zenith and thus never made it to a Luis LaBamba blowout but I did get to see him a few times at Pine Street all ages shows (remember all the chandeliers?). Funny, I remember Lenny & The Pipsqueaks opening one of those shows.
Billy was pretty much the coolest guy in Stumptown at that time. I remember seeing him walk out of the Bijou Cafe after a late lunch wearing yellow stretch pants with a Bambi print on them, pretty dig dang New Wave.
Anyway, this record was a big deal when it was released. It came out at a time when local indie LP releases were not an everyday thing. I was at a release party at Key Largo in the late 90's when the CD was first released, that's where I got my copy.
I know the drummer's sister and heard that the Unreal Gods are doing a reunion show with Lenny Rancher singing sometime soon (it may have already happened).
This album is a ton of fun and reading the other reviews, everybody has their favorite so I'll talk about mine: Upstroke Down. This is the one I have put on many mix tapes made for friends. Infectious, rockin', party!
Boom Chuck Rock Now.......2004-02-28
I had moved away from Portland in the late 70s and missed the beginning of Billy's career rise. I came back to Portland in 1985 after college and I met producer Jan Baross, who was in the process of making a KOIN-TV documentary about Billy and she asked me to help. It was through that process that I came to know Billy's music. At that time he was working on Flesh and Blood, but Jan shared Boom Chuck Rock Now with me. I was amazed at how different the two albums were, but they were both excellent. I know many people think Billy was full of himself, but his cancer humbled him. I had a couple of good chats with him before he died, and the person I got to know was not vain or self serving, he was a beautiful soul. I recommend all of Billy's albums. They are all unique and that shows what a talented artist he really was.
A Goddess' Perspective.......2001-12-27
I danced to these songs with the band as a Goddess a Go-Go hundreds of shows. We had so many great times... Rockabilly Queen busted my butt though!
Billy's music on this compilation was (and is) joyful, pleasant and uncomplicated. I loved it then and miss it now.
I was shocked and moved to know it is still marketed... pulled it up via a Google search. This says to me enough other people are moved by Billy's music that it is still being produced. This is profound in that it means Billy continues to live and that is all he hoped for as his health deteriorated.
Anyway, I only got one copy of the album (yes, that's all any of us got in the band without paying for them) and I left it in the backseat of my VW... it warped right after the release party at Lung Fung.
Twenty years later, I finally can get a copy on CD and listen to it again...after all these years.
Thanks, Amazon. This is very cool!
Billy lives.......2001-12-17
I too own this on vinyl. bought on a sunny day from Music Millenium back in, maybe, '83?
It is a sunny, upbeat happy album from Billy Rancher and the Unreal Gods' glory days as the premier rocking good time
Portland dance band. I and others were damned lucky to be at any of the many shows at Luis La Bamba's at midnight when Billy would come out for the last set, dressed in pajamas and launch into his signature songs. Billy had the best vibes and his band loved to play up until the final moment before the Marshalls would threaten to shut the sound down.
Why Rocky Road did not become a hit for the band I do not know. It is prescient to listen to now, given Billy's life and death struggle with the cancer that elevated him to Avatar status before killing him. He had no idea of the Rocky Road that awaited him, a Rocky Road that it would have taken the rocks from four Golgothas to pave.
The album is worth buying for that one song.

Best Godfather's Album.......2006-12-22
In my mind, this is the best album the Godfather's ever produced. No-nonsense guitar based rock, born in the 80's and giving birth to the early 90's alternative rave. Unfortunately, they never caught on and are doomed to be another forgotten wonder.
If I had a say..........2004-02-13
If I had a say in the music industry I would do everything to re-release the Godfathers' albums. The Best-Of of 1996 is but a nice try. Unreal world is a real gem, not as hard as its worthy predecessors, but more conciliatory and brighter. It's not only one of my favourite Godfathers albums but on of my favourite CD's in general. So I completely agree to (and have read) the statement above by the anonymous music fan from Michigan!
I must have terrible taste in music.......2003-11-16
Judging by the amount of used "Unreal World" CD's for sale on Amazon.com at about a buck each, I must not "get" it. ("It" being good music). I don't know why success eluded them, but the Godfathers were one of my favorite bands. To this day, "Unreal World" is my favorite Godfathers CD (I like it even better than "Birth, School, Work, Death"). It just seems unfair to me that their music is so neglected even to this day. (And I doubt that one person will ever read this on Amazon).

Ray Stevens.......2007-07-15
I had this music on eight-track 30 years ago and played it hundreds of times. Been searching for a source to put on mp3. A friend can now convert LPs to digital. Ray is a talented musician beyond all of the novelty stuff he is famous for.
Multi-talented Ray Stevens.......2005-09-02
Ray is well known for Everything is Beautiful and his comedy recordings. He should also be recognized for his great singing voice. This CD is a good example of his singing and song-writing ability. He also does a great job on his gospel CD. He enunciates very well. I understand he has been sick lately but I hope he will record again.
Biased review - but nonetheless...........2005-07-12
Was thrilled to see these 2 albums on CD at last - especially since EIB was the first real album I ever owned (11th Birthday present). I still have these on vinyl (autographed by Ray himself back in 1977) and still play them - but to have the sound levels boosted like they are here is great. I didn't notice the mono mixes until it was pointed out above - just hearing these back to back at a higher sound level was enough. To the songs - EIB was of course a huge hit in the summer of 1970 and for good reason - it's just sung incredibly well and some positive lyrics where just what the country needed then - my other favorites are "Leaving On A Jet Plane" "Something" as well as a unique take on Dylan's "She Belongs To Me" - but really there's no bad tracks here - Stevens singing is up with the best of his career and having Dusty Springfield and Elvis Presley session musicians backing him up certainly didn't hurt.
Unreal!!! is a terrific sampling of Stevens originals - "Night People", "Imitation of Life" and "Islands" are some of the saddest/best "love gone wrong" songs ever written - but the real gem here is "Sunset Strip" - possibly Ray's best vocal ever with terrific horns and piano to boot - I'm amazed at how well these tunes hold up 34 plus years later!!! The re-sequencing of both albums doesn't bother me - these aren't really "concept albums" - just great early 70's pop music - now if they'd just release Ray's rare masterpiece "Have A Little Talk With Myself" (Monument label from 1969) I'd have a real sense of closure! Ray's new box set has some serious tracks as well - would like to see a return to form similar to the above classics!
botched reissue.......2005-06-07
OK, it's not like this CD is going to appeal to that many people to begin with. Ray Stevens is best known for his novelty records, and nary a joke, funny voice or overbearing laugh track is to be found in this two-fer reissue. In fact, the fact that these two underrated albums are finally in print for the first time in 30 years should be cause for rejoicing. But, as usual, the Collectables label has messed up the reissue. First and foremost, more than half of the selections -- including all but one of the tracks from "Everything is Beautiful" are reduced from glorious stereophonic sound to muddy monural. That's a real shame, because Ray Stevens was a masterful producer whose albums were sonically years ahead of their time. That they're presented here without the benefit of stereo is inexplicable. (Adding to the frustration: The same thing happened with Curb's reissue of "Turn Your Radio On.") Adding to the frustration is the lack of liner notes or full reproductions of the album covers. "Everything is beautiful..." except when Collectables gets a hold of it!

While not the perfect Unreal Gods release it still rocks!.......2007-02-03
This is a posthumous release that was put out as it was. Some extra mastering was done, but it basically this release stays true to the original recordings done in New York and L.A. Basically, this is a collection of live in the studio recordings (very little over dubbing) with two additional tracks that were recorded in Billy's' warehouse studio when Arista Records decided to put the band on hold. I have been listening to this CD for years and it still rocks. Check out full length tracks at last.Fm

This CD does have a few great songs on it but it is not the CD of Billy that needs to come out. Why this was released while the world still waits for the all time great Billy album that will spin your head around and tear out your heart is a story of itself that I can only guess at.
Billy's songs from when his cancer returned for the 3d time and written practically up until his final dying breath, especially Chemotherapy (co-written with his brother Lenny Rancher), Here's to You, the Big Picture, and others on Mr. Groove, the tape he made as he lay dying, rank as some of my favorite all time music and it is a crime that it is not published and available. I have no doubts that someday they will be. Those songs need to be heard.
The songs on this CD, though essential if you ever saw and loved Billy simply because they are all you are going to get for a time, are mostly from record producers attempts to make Billy commercial.
MADE IN HONG KONG.......2000-04-26
THERE ARE SOME REAL GEMS ON THIS CD. "THE POLICE TOLD ME" AND "MADE IN HONG KONG" WOULD HAVE BEEN BIG HITS HAD BILLY NOT DIED. HE WAS THE BUDDY HOLLY OF THE 80'S.
