4 out of 5 stars one of a kind.......2007-01-23

This is the best record by three mile pilot. check out the song South but the 30 sec sample doesnt capture the songs greatness. This band, along with his other band Black Heart Procession, writes the most unique music. I call them the pirate bands because they're earie, dark, and use the accordian. If you do not like this album then you suck at life.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Top 10 Albums.......2006-12-17

This will have been the fourth time I've bought this album since the other three copies have disappeared to friends, but I always feel renewed excitement whenever I have to buy it again. This is, by far, Three Mile Pilot's most accesible and best album ( "Songs From An Old Town We Once Knew" is right up there, too ). Pinback's Armisted Burwell Smith IV certainly lends his personally melodic touch to these songs and Pall Jekins (now the frontman to The Black Heart Procession) gives an emotional performance. Choose clips from "South (The Opera Circle South)", "The Mending King", and "One False Eye". You love this album, you just don't know it yet!

5 out of 5 stars Thundrous.......2005-11-13

Astounding record. You've heard nothing like this--kind of like if you mixed Pink Floyd with Radiohead, I guess. Love this record!

5 out of 5 stars This band turned my music world upside down.......2001-05-05

This is one of my favorite cds (out of the more than 200 that I own). It somehow directly connects to me on an emotional level. Pall is an extremely expressive songwriter, and he tells these little stories with each song, never telling you exactly what it's about, so you have to interpret the song and figure it out yourself. It's impossible to peg TMP's musical style, they don't fit into any category, some of its kinda rock, some is kinda punk-ish, and some is kinda mellow (but more of a spooky mellow). It's some of the most unique and honest sounds I have ever heard. This cd is a must have. But then again, all thier cd's are... get them all!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Stuff.......2000-12-29

I love this CD to death--as well as the other Three Mile Pilot CD I have (can't remember the title). When you factor in the incredible Black Heart Procession, these guys are just amazing. Few CDs grow on you the way their music does--it has depth to it and the 30th listen is actually more invigorating than the first.

5 out of 5 stars perhaps one of the greatest albums ever.......2004-08-08

this record is 11 years old (released in '93) and still more sonically advanced than the bulk of current indie/experimental rock. With "Chief Assassin...", TMP demonstrated how dense a trio could sound: crushing, tom-heavy drumming; e-bowed guitar feedback; and legendary, bass-driven chord progressions. The lyrics are self-consciously cryptic, but nevertheless beautiful and memorable: "god is breathing fire, and the devil's inside..."

if you can find it, the version released by geffen in '95 contains three extra songs (minus vux intruder) which are stunning in their beauty -- it was also, I believe, remastered prior to release, so it sounds noticeably better.

4 out of 5 stars No trends here. Just great down to earth music........2004-07-27

This was their second and moved in transition from their primative 3 piece of rhythm section and vocals to adding guitar as well as some other instruments from help of some friends(Goff from Crash Worship).

I've been watching this band for years growing up in SD and maybe I'm biased, but I don't believe so. 3MP are one of the few bands whose music is as timeless as any band can be because of one reason: originality.

They write music from their own taste, preferences, self-fulfillment, and not for trends or to rock out. 3MP are one of the hardest bands to catagorize because they don't associate or try to associate themselves with any particular genre or scene. And that also contributes to their timeless aspect.

This album is great because it moves into a direction of more guitar and does sound very primative and kinda has tribal aspects(content and soundwise). For a 2nd album that sounds drastically different than their first, it is a hit. Not many bands can progress on their second album as well as 3MP had. Side one is so amazing that sometimes you get stuck listening to Side on on rotation(I have the original record off Negative Records put out by Jason). Side two is ok, just not as good as side one IMO.

I really can't describe their music very well. Just real primitive rock with primitive content lyrically, but it is(like all their releases) very rhythm section oriented. They started out that way, and even though through the years they've added instruments to their sound, it never changed: rhythm section oriented. The bassist is the best I've seen come out of SD. The guy is amazing. It's not just his bass, but he also plays piano(ok electric), and the drummer fits the thunderous bass so well with his heavy pounding. Very dynamic rhythm section, has to rank right up there as one of my favorite rhythm sections. And Pall's singing was the other half of why 3MP was great. You hear the energy and the emotion in his voice. I didn't give it 5 because I thought the 1st side heavily dominated the 2nd.

3MP is not the band to namedrop unless you're more concerned with being original and different to impress your friends. And 3MP fans are normally not like that. 3MP has survived many trends in sd, everything from the RFTC greaser rockabilly scene and through the Gravity records scene(well they did put out one EP), but they never did try to fit in with those trends and because of this, everyone in SD that knows of 3MP has much respect because they have done something that most bands were not able to do: stick to their own thing. This is the reason why people have respect for 3 mile pilot. It has nothing to do with being cool and namedropping. Nothing is stylishly cool about 3MP. They earned the respect because they are one of the most talented 3-pieces to ever come out, they consistently progressed and changed for the better, and they never associated themselves with a certain scene or trend and have always stuck to their own roots. I have the most respect for this band and I have hope that they will get back together one day because Blackheart & Pinback don't come close to the quality of 3MP's music.

3 out of 5 stars title of review.......2003-06-15

Three Mile Pilot is a pretty good name to drop, alongside Slint, Rodan, Juno, and Engine Down, if you're looking to exude the i-listen-to-intelligent-creative-indie-rock chic. Sure, they're certainly creative, and I do find their music mildly intriguing, but ultimatley unsatisfying. They're one of those bands where everyone who's heard of them has a ton of respect for them and you just can't say a bad word about them, and it's kinda ridiculous because they're really not that good, but whatever.

4 out of 5 stars completely unique and intense.......2000-01-08

This album began 3mp's experimentation w/ more instrumentation. It marks the beginning of their ascent to the valhalla of music. this album is a must have if you are intelligent and religious about music; esp if you have a taste for dark beauty. subsequent releases have gotten better and better. they should have an album coming out in 2000 which I predict will be a masterpiece. i hope these freaks never quit making music. i gave this 4 stars just so i could save stars for the stuff theyve put out since.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and mezmorizing CD.......1999-12-09

This is one of the best bands i have ever heard. Three Mile is seriously underappreciated and its amazing that they haven't enjoyed more popular success but regardless they are incredible artists.

If you like them already and dont have this one you should check it out. There are some gems. One of a kind band with one of a kind sound. You can definitely hear the beginnings of pinback here. Great place to start your move to Pinback and Blackheart procession. Some songs are perfect. One step ladder could be Pinback Bside.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow-wee.......2006-03-15

This is the first Three Mile Pilot album that i have gotten, and it is only an EP. I have become very irritated at how hard this stuff is to find, and frankly dont agree with the prices on amazon, so i have been holding out. So this is the first album by them that i have heard in its entirety.
That being said, this stuff is great, i was introduced to them because i am a Black Heart Procession fan and saw them in the "Customers who bought this also bought this" section of amazon and checked them out.
Basically, i am conviced that everything that Pall Jenkins touches turns to gold (not to mention Tobias Nathaniel), because to this day i have not been disappointd with anything, and continually get pleasent surprises when i read the credits of albums that i buy. He seems to have his hand in everything.
For being a short EP, this is actually pretty long and is never dull for a moment. I would not consider any song on the album anywhere close to being mediocre, let alone bad. This EP is incredible, and i will continue to look for more. I would recomend this to anyone, especially anyone who is a Black Heart Procession fan.

    3 out of 5 stars A bit dissapointing.......1999-10-27

I admit my love of 3 Mile Pilot is fickle. "Another Desert Another Sea" is without a doubt the most amazing indie rock album I have ever heard. I've managed to get many of my friends hooked on it and we're all left with a sense of "why aren't these guys more known?" It is unfairly hard to find so if you see the red artwork don't pass it up. Unfortunately, I've been dissapointed with their other efforts. Tho' on "Another Desert" the unorthodox bass / guitar parts mesh perfectly, they don't seem to work as well for me here. Like "Chief Assassin..", the songs tend to be just a little too tragically minor for my tastes. On a positive note, their version of Brian Eno's "By This River" contains the hearstopping beauty found on "Another Desert" and just that song makes this EP worth the purchase. The lo-fi "Ship To Bangladesh" and the harmonies on "Worry" also make this a worthy buy.

5 out of 5 stars this band moves me.......1999-05-18

"on a ship to bangladesh" is a very interesting song that mixes very colorful, emotional chords over a straight forward hip hop beat. this song was recorded with a drum machine and differs from the amazingly abstract drumming from thier previous albums but still keeps me locked into the many layers of the song. this album has texture and is real. i don't know if it's for everyone but i recomend checking it out, it's very creative.

    5 out of 5 stars Truly Unique.......1999-03-28

I'm probably the biggest Three Mile Pilot fan. This short album that contains 5 songs are very flabbergasting. Songs such as "Wahn" with that weird water background sound. My favorite Tokyo Static with nice piano from Toby. Make sure to check out The Blackheart Procession.

5 out of 5 stars if you dont own this, you better get it!!!.......1999-02-11

this california band is amazing. they've been around for quite some time, and have a lot of releases. many of which are unfortunantly out of print. this has piano, drums, guitar, and bass. pall has a very interesting voice, its good just interesting. it is a very mellow record, which is somewhat of a suprise for this record label, but in this case it is a welcomed suprise. it also features a brian eno cover. if you like this you should look for a record by the black heart procession ( a band featuring the singer/guitar player and the keyboard player from 3 mile pilot and the drummer from clikatat ikatowi) it is one of my favorite records

5 out of 5 stars This CD makes me homesick!.......2002-08-22

This is a great collection of work from 3MP, one of my favorite bands from my home town. If you like this, try to get your hands on Pitchfork.

It reminds me of how music used to be in SD back in the day, before San Diego became "the next Seattle" and small bands started showing up on MTV.

This reminds me of nights at the Che' Cafe, hearing local musicians and out of towners coming through, sitting on the patio outside on warm San Diego evenings, talking to people about all the consipiraces against the local music scene and which venues were being shut down and which venues were selling out and jacking up prices to get in and which bands were getting discovered.

Basically, not only is it great music, it's a historical and nostalgic collection of music, just like the title indicates.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album, period.......2002-07-21

This album is just so great that it's a crime that so few people know about it. Sometimes just gorgeous and sometimes really crunching cathartic stuff, all combined with the kind of odd murky and haunting sonic atmosphere that you expect from 3MP. This was album was clearly a slapped-together job, comprising of new material plus B sides and outtakes etc over a period of years. And yet the material outdistances anything else they've done. The bass work in particular is phenomenal -- he plays it like a lead guitar. Also, if you're a fan of Pinback then you really should own this. One caveat: I almost never listen to CD2 -- except for the song "The Trail", which is great -- and the very first song on CD 1 is really the worst on the album. So don't let that put you off, because the rest of that first CD... wow. Wow! If my desert island disc was limited to one choice, it might be this one. (Well, okay, a Beatles disc might win instead, but only just.) Really, it's that good.
