Way too much filler - should have been a single album. Check out "Album" if you want to get familiar with Quorthon. The good music on here is great, just hard to sift through the rest.

Pure Genius.......2007-01-06

I've had difficulty finding out much about this band, even in the Online Age. The one thing you'll hear repeatedly is comparisons to The Cure. There's no denying the similarities to Robert Smith's band, especially albums such as 'faith' and 'pornography'. However, on several songs The Essence show more pop sensibilities and turn the goth/emo Cure influences down just a bit. To some ears, this makes the songs more catchy, giving them an 80s Euro pop feel. To others, it'll make them sound like Cure-wannabes. Personally, I enjoy the music alot, especially when I'm not in the mood for something as emotionally weighty as The Cure. My copy of 'purity' has a few fewer songs on it, but is still a solid listen for anyone liking 80s Euro pop, early Goth pop, or early 80s The Cure (assuming you don't mind the somewhat copycat nature)

I am happy to finally be able to write a review of this outstanding group, that even having a very well trained ear, I would SWEAR...that Robert Smith is on lead Vocals. I bought this "record" in the UK in the mid 80's, only because I seriously thought that it was Robert Smith singing. This group sounds exactly like "The Cure from the "CD's Pornography and 17 Seconds" However close they may sound to each other...it is not R. Smith on vocals it is "Hans Geertsma" as noted inside on the record sleeve complete with lyrics that are so similiar to The Cure. Just look at the song titles, in the song "Forever in Death
the Lyrics...give me your faith to cover me...
like a shot through my head...
and then death forever sleep...
in my mouth the taste of you...
my eyes turn wet...
with desire to put my life...
into your hands...
put some of the Cures earlier days, spooky music with alot of echos, and the typical screatching voice of Robert Smith...and you seriously believe it is The Cure, the Entire record I own is a classic, and I love it. all the songs on this record have the typical cure trademark sounds, and the lyrics and song titles are so similiar, makes you think...hope someone else feels the same way as I do.Jason

Very Good Album, But Get The "Two-fer" Instead.......2003-01-04

"Purity Of Essence" was the Rumour's third and final album. Keyboard player Rob Andrews is gone, and the band has shifted their sound towards tight, punchy power-pop songs. They do a great version of Randy Newman's "Have You Seen My Baby", and originals "Tula", "Houston", and "I Don't Want The Night To End" are also impressive. But, as much as I love this music, I must advise that there is a better way to get it. In 2001 a collection called "Not Just A Rumour, More A Way Of Life" was released that has almost every song on this album (only "Name And Number" was left off), AND almost all of the Rumour's second album, "Frogs Sprouts Clogs and Krauts" as well. And at about the same price, it's a much better deal. As of this writing, it is still in print and available on Amazon/CDNow.
