Crystal Method's Legion of Boom lives up to its title, dropping blasts of thumping samples, catchy riffs, and dependable grooves. But as with previous records like 2001's Tweekend, a chaotic, industrial darkness lurks around the edges that has little in common with the sheen of commercial dance. Many still compare Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland to the Chemical Brothers and their Big Beat, arena-pleaser cousins. But Boom sounds more like Nitzer Ebb in a good mood, or an angst-free Front 242. The duo has invited another batch of touchy-feely artists to contribute, like those noted softies Wes Borland and John Garcia, formerly of Limp Bizkit and Kyuss, respectively. Don't think for a second they aren't all having a blast, mixing in big, dumb hair metal with abandon. Most fun of all is the boost singer/actress Milla Jovovich gives to "I Know It's You," weaving her tweaked voice through a forest of tangled keyboards. With its bombastic techno-jams, Legion of Boom definitely makes for a tasty party record. Just keep the lights down as low as the bass end if you really want to capture the mood. --Matthew Cooke

found the entire CD pretty good, tho the second half being more of the Method I prefer.

5 out of 5 stars Crystal strikes GOLD.......2005-12-26

Now, I am familiar with a few of The Crystal Method's older works but not all of them. I've always kind of admired them from afar sort of afraid to jump right in and give them the "GO AHEAD" signal. They have always produced body rocking head bobbing beats that make you want to get up and dance or just hum along to the tune all day long. This album was the one that got me hooked.

I can play this c.d. from track #1 all the way through without skipping a song and not loosing the good vibes that I feel. Whether I'm doing housework, studying, playing video games or just getting ready for a night out on the town you cannot deny the incredible production that this album represents. I will reccommend this to anyone who wants to get into this kind of music or who just wants to know The Crystal Method more. They are on a different plane than Fatboy Slim and in my opinion, a much greater one.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the Chemical Brothers, but not Fatboy Slim.......2005-12-03

I pretty much hated this C.D. the first couple times I listened to it, but the wondrous track "Born Too Slow" kept convincing me again and again to give it another chance until at last I began to appreciate the music. Most of the tunes on Legion of Boom sample rhythms or vocal excerpts, and do this in an electronica fashion that is reminiscent of the Chemical Brothers, yet is significantly more catchy and fun to listen to. One of the more prominent melodies, "The American Way", features a violin pattern, some random guy saying "Tis the American Way", a bit of rap, and a strange noise that sounds like a hoarse monkey hooting. Then there is the spectacular song "Born Too Slow", which originally drew me to this album after I heard it on a Need For Speed videogame. This track includes an electric guitar rhythm, a good set of vocals, and a couple of mystic electronic noises which add greatly to the splendor. Ever since I found about Fatboy Slim, I've fallen in love with this genre, and The Crystal Method is a vital part of it! I would highly recommend this album to all Elecrronica fans, for it has an admirable sense of beat and the band is good at sampling.

    4 out of 5 stars TCM: LOB.......2005-11-12

The negative reviews of LOB are encouraging me to pick up all other TCM records that I don't have.

I remember liking whatever TCM song I heard on the radio. When I came across Legion of Boom at my local public library... yes, my public library, I borrowed the CD and loved it from first listen. "American Way" is the only song I'm ever tempted to skip over...

I think this is an excellent record.

3 out of 5 stars only for TCM diehards.......2005-09-11

The reviews for this album are all over the spectrum. But here's the deal-LOB is an attempt to appeal to a broader audience. "Born Too Slow" is a made for MTV 3 minute pop song with hard rock overtones. "American Way", while a decent track in its own right, is as much hip hop as anything. Those of you that are looking for the same sound you got on Vegas and Tweekend will find it with "Acetone", "Bound Too Long" and to a less extent "Realizer."

When I listen to Vegas, I get the sense that TCM worked really hard with a medium budget to produce some groundbreaking music.

Tweekend is a slightly different style, but it still has plenty of aural complexity and exhibits good attention to detail. And while not as novel as Vegas, it is an excellent album.

LOB is spotty-some songs seem like the TCM of old, but without quite the same level of effort. In general the songs that have the same style as the first two albums contain fewer sonic textures and are less complex, and thus for me, less satisfying to listen to again and again. Some songs are just blatant attempts to make TCM appeal to a broader range of listeners, even at the expense of releasing mediocre material. I hope the lukewarm reception LOB has gotten will persuade TCM to go back to basics and provide us with tracks that really demonstrate how creative they can be. I don't need every album to sound like Vegas, but I expect every album to have solidly crafted tracks from start to finish.

Summary: LOB is only for those that are willing to pay for an entire TCM album to obtain 2 or 3 worthwhile tracks.

    Album Description

The Grateful Dead's revered and mercurial Jerry Garcia pursued an eclectic array of side projects throughout his life. Many were folk/bluegrass-oriented, but for a brief time a Garcia band incarnation known as Legion Of Mary conjured up an inspired rock and jazz vibe. Featuring Jerry on guitar/vocals, Merl Saunders on keyboards/vocals, John Kahn on bass, Martin Fierro on reeds, and former Elvis drummer Ron Tutt, the quintet played just over 60 now-historic shows from December 1974 through July 1975. Distinguished by hard grooves and that unique Garcia improvisational style, the unit disbanded in the wake of concurrent Dead activities such as the Blues For Allah sessions, but these never-before-released recordings capture their magic.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-03-02

Eh. I had high hopes for this one (having never heard the tapes), with the sax player in the band and the word "jazzy" used in all the hype. It's just OK, and it's not "jazzy" at all--this is basically a blues band. The sax player--instantly recognizable as the honker on the original studio version of Music Never Stopped--pretty much sucks. Why is it that in any rock band with a saxophonist, the sax is the weak link (yes, I include the E St. Band)? He adds nothing of interest, gets in Jerry's way pretty often, is out of tune most of the time, and keeps playing (at whim) through a wah-wah effect that makes him sound like a singing AFLAC duck. Jerry plays pretty well, but he hits a lot of clams on Melody and never really blows me away (as his playing often does). *shrug*

    4 out of 5 stars Very impressive.......2007-02-20

Thank you Rhino for putting out these amazing CD's. Since I've branched off in to the non-Dead Jerry area, this is one of the best I've found. I love the combination of guitar/organ/saxophone. It just works. The sound quality of this release is top notch. Listening through a good 2 speaker setup, there is a very distinct separation of instruments, ie, you can focus on just one very easily. This is one of the crispiest live recordings I've ever heard. My only complaint stems from the music itself... it does get a bit repetitive. It starts out with a bang with "tough mama", and for the rest of the first disc, they play at one speed - intense. Maybe my only problem here is track order. There are some slower numbers on the second disc. If you listen closely, they repeat some riffs very often. Very sweet, but in some ways it's a bit one-dimensional.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but not as good as the Keystone CDs.......2007-01-08

It's great that these old tapes are being put out on CD. The sound quality is very good and the playing is top rate as well. This selection is very good but does not measure up the the Keystone discs with Merl. The music is energetic enough, but the slower tunes and blues songs don't sway and move me. The guitar solos are good, but are not as emotional as fans have come to expect on the Keystone series. I'm being tougher in the comments because there seems to be a tendency among GD and Garcia reviewers to say everyting is the best as long as Jerry's voice isn't cracking and the sound quality is pretty good. With that said. this gets 4 stars based on how it stands alone and not in comparison to other great Garcia discs.

5 out of 5 stars How Sweet It Is.......2006-07-28

Wow! How great to find such a great collection. Just got this CD set and the music is wonderful. I'm a long time Dead and Garcia fan, but I'm not like some that love everything they did just because its them. Jerry's later performances were not what they were earlier in his career. So its exciting to find some "new" music like this with Jerry in his prime. What great jams...what great guitar. The addition of the horns also brings a jazzy element (similar to "Wake of the Flood" songs) that is welcome here. The sound/recording is also top notch. This is a must buy!

5 out of 5 stars Nice to have more.......2005-10-04

Taken from Portland,12/14/74, Berkelely,3/01/75,& 5/22/75,and San Francisco 2/27,7/04,& 7/05/75. With Garcia is Merl Saunders(keyboards, vocals),John Kahn(bass),Ron Tutt(drums),and Martin Fierro (sax, flute)this line up makes what was called The Legion of Mary. There is some great playing, and a a jazzy relaxed feel through out. Quality is excellent but nothing really new, just more and thats just fine, because when you love his music you can always here something just a little better or at least different in these types of releases ,that is new to our ears. I just hope Rino doesn't over saturate us with too much too fast with their Jerry Garcia Collection, this being Vol 1. There has been a lot of releases in the past 7 years, and this is one of the good ones. The shortest number here is just under 8 minutes, most around 11 minutes, lots of bang for you buck.

If you are a very good listener of Sousa Marches I recommend to buy this 4 CD collection.

Spanish: Si eres amante de las Marchas de Sousa les recomiendo comprar esta coleccion de 4 CDS

5 out of 5 stars One Of My Newest Favorites.......2004-07-14

I've just discovered the awesome marches of John Phillip Sousa in the past year. I have several very good Sousa compilations that feature his best known Marches like "Stars & Stripes Forever" and "King Cotton." What I enjoy about this compilation is that it contains a plethora of great Sousa Marches, most of which I never heard before.

I'm strictly a layperson when it comes to classical music, so if my take on Sousa sounds choppy & neanderthol, please pardon me!

This is the third Sousa CD I bought that is conducted by the United States Marine Band, and so far, I enjoy their take on John Phillip Sousa Marches heads above the rest. When a Sousa March moves me, it is because it is more than uplifting; it is sheer elation, a pure mood enhancer when waking up in the morning. "The President's Own" delivers this spirit better than any other source I have heard. The pace is brisk, but not rushed. I've heard other bands' versions of Sousa where the conductor seems to let the chief instruments overshadow others (the flute often seems to be one of the characters drowned out), where the instrumentals in The Marine Band sound so beautifully distributed that I often find myself listening to a March I've heard countless times, and suddenly hear a rhythm or melody from a wind instrument I had never noticed before.

If you have never heard many of John Phillips Sousa's Marches before, this is a good place to start. "Fairest Of the Fair" starts with such an optimistic and energetic pace that it is a hard act for the following tracks to follow. This was the first time I heard the March, and it has become one of my top five Sousa favorites. The next track delivers with "Hands Across the Sea." The persons who compiled this collection have a great ear for Marches as nothing disappointed me. Two tunes that especially grabbed me are "High School Cadets" and the exotic "The Picador."

John Phillip Sousa is one of the most enjoyable musical discoveries I have come across in years. Give this CD a shot, I think you will find it a fabulous listening experience!

5 out of 5 stars GOOD OLE SOUSA.......2004-01-14

Indeed it is a must have classic of a truly great American Composer. Taken from the vaults of the amazing and historic Marine Band this is a classic for any true American Band Lover. The product is superb and well mixed, Bravo to its creators and bravo to those who bring this hard to find music to us in such excellent form.

3 out of 5 stars Not Great Sousa!.......2003-11-07

Despite the fact that this is the Marine band playing Sousa I would not rcommend this product. The selection of Sousa marches is standard, the length of the CD is too short for the price, and the recording quality is poor. There are better Sousa albums elsewhere.

Having taught music for 41 years, I do appreciate the quality of a good band, good music and a good recording. This series is all three! My only complaint is that the CD's are not long enough. I would like to have them last much longer. Enjoyed them very much!

3 out of 5 stars A Moderate Sampling of Sousa.......2003-12-04

Actually one of the better CDs of the limited Altissimo! line of products. At least we have the Marine band playing Sousa, as it should be, but many of the selections are what we have heard already on countless CDs of Sousa. A few of the selections here are different and worthwhile. The problems we encounter are a mixture of recording styles taken from different internal tracks from the Marine Band Library. These recordings were never intended for commercial use. Hence the un-even sound at times. Also the brief durration of the CD indicates as well that it was never intended for public use. Finally, lack of any worthwhile liner notes tops off a rather un-professional job overall.

5 out of 5 stars Start of a great series for Sousa admirers.......2002-09-07

The President's Own play these like no other ensemble. I don't know what the current occupant of the White House thinks about them, but this wind ensemble is a national treasure in my book. This whole series is highly recommended. They play with more energy than the fine musicians of the Detroit Concert Band who sound a little bored on the complete Walking Frog set. They are a much finer ensemble, playing with greater precision and balance than Kieth Brion's British players on Naxos. The only weakness is in the documentation. There is none. We are not even told who the excellent conductor is. But that doesn't prevent one from enjoying the inspiring performances. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Sousa Played as only the Marines can do.......2001-11-01

This release by Altissimo! is a great collection of Sousa Recordings played by the band that Sousa made great. There are tons of Sousa recordings out there, but none feature the US Marine band. Sousa marches don't sound the same until you have heard them played by the Marines. Sousa wrote many of these marches while bandmaster of the Marines, thus the reason why the renditions of these works are so excellent here. The band playes with a real drive and energy, the likes of which few can compare. While not a large selection of marches, this CD is only volume one of a four volume set of Sousa's music featuring the US Marine band. (...) Now more than ever, with our nation in crisis, we need the inspired music of our great service bands.

Diecide.. To sum them up, they play dry death metal 1000 bpm palm mutes and mix in satanic lyrics with snarly vocals.. BIG DEAL!!!! The music is so simplistic and boring that you can find as much excitement beating your head against the wall without reason... Deicide isnt in the same league as Cannibal Corpse.. CC at least knows how to lay down timely rythemic progressions with solos along with the vocals.
I guess if your Satanist you can overlook the poor talent Diecide presents and blindly love this band for theyre stupid lyrics.. I on the other hand like to listen to good music.. I dont hear any here.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Classic Death Metal Album not for Everyone.......2006-07-15

Deicide is world class DEATH METAL . It does not matter if you like them or hate them. The ever shifting drums of Steve and extreme guitar riffing by the Hoffman brothers is considered by credible music critics as an essential example of great death metal music. The band actually helped define the early 90's death metal movement with complicated, ultra heavy music and low growling vocals of Glen Benton. Although many say that Trifixion is the favorite cut in this album, the band's compositions and performance in this album is solid and serious throughout. All songs are considered by many as classic. Even though Glen Benton hated and never accepted the Death metal music categorization, they are one of the best bands that came to existence. Although such early-'80s metal bands like Venom and the Possessed helped invent this radically heavy sound, Deicide continue to expand upon death metal's groundwork. Admittedly, Deicide's music and heavily Satanic lyrics aren't for everyone. But when everything is said and done, when gimmicks are long dead .Deicide and this album Legion will remain a death metal classic.

    5 out of 5 stars Deicide's finest effort!!!.......2006-05-31

Back in the day, when i was 15 years, i bought this and for me was "pure evil". This album got everything, thrashing guitar riffs, incredible solos and excellent drums courtesy of Asheim. Glenn Benton sounds really pissed off, and i like the way he sings. This album was a huge step and major improvement by this guys in that time. Recommended!!

    5 out of 5 stars GrrrrGrrrrGrrrrYeeeaaahhh!!!.......2006-03-06

This is my fav. Deicide album out of all of them. I got the 1st self-titled one 1st & liked it, but then I got this one I liked it even better. Its more technical than the 1st one (which 4 me is good, cause I LOVE technical death metal) & the song structures are better the 2nd time around. Im not much into the constant bible-bashing, but oh well... its still a good peice of death metal history. I'd say if U had to have one Deicide album in your collection, get either this one or their 1st one. Or else get them both!!! Yeeeaaahhh! Get on the ball!

2 out of 5 stars Eh... I've heard worse, and much better.......2005-12-14

Boring thrash riffs, repetitive and unimaginative drumming, stoopid lyrics and one of the most average vocalists in death metal. Legion is a flat unchanging drone from beginning to end, not unlike listening to a vacuum cleaner that occasionally changes from high to low. The guitar sound is an unimpressive weak buzzing, like radio static, heavy it's not. Back in the day this album was impressive, but listening to it (again) today I find there's really not a whole lot to Legion other than the speed. It doesn't hold up. I never really "got" Deicide anyway. Their music never propelled or moved me, unlike Morbid Angel or Death or many other American extreme metal bands of the early 90's. Ultimately Legion and Deicide aren't that interesting to me musically and the poorly concieved fascination with Satan comes across as cheesy. I'm afraid Legion is an unimaginative album from an average band.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Album From a Solid Band.......2005-09-20

Miracle Legion's only album available on cd is a collection of songs that are bursting with energy. The opening track hits you hard and keep you tapping your feet. The album quickly loses steam after that song but luckily regains it jsut as fast with "So Good" and "Everything is Rosey." On Velvetine Mark sings with a fever rarely heard from is usualy soothing voice and its an entralling experience since his voice is one of the best in the genre. Though fans of Surprise, Surprise, Surprise may feel a little left out since these songs lack the darkness found in the previous albums, Mark's sonngwriting has only grown stronger. Perhaps the production is to blame for the lighter feel of these sonngs. Not to say it is at all bad, the glossy production gives new light to instruments that often were lost in the mix on their earlier albums. So while it feels these songs dont have the depth that their earlier work has, it is only because there is greater focus.

    4 out of 5 stars Red Wonder.......2004-06-30

To summarise; good song writing from Mark & Ray with a disappointing final production. Classic case of the record label getting to involved creative process. Four or five of the songs became classic live numbers at Miracle Legion shows in late 80's and early 90's, however, the album eventually put out by Morgan Creek was sadly over-produced. Regardless, this album deserves a place in every Music Fans CD collection as it simply still beats 99% of albums available since its release! So few of Miracle Legion's records are actually available today (i.e. Surprise, Surprise, Surprise and The Backyard were never put out on CD!)! Without doubt the Legion were a great band unfortunately appreciated by so few people! Stand out tracks on this album are "With a Wish" and "Out to Play"..

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Musical Excursion.......2003-10-23

If you do not have this album, buy it. It is simply fantastic. Every song... from Sea Hag, to So Good, to Snacks n' Candy are awesome, powerful pop songs. These gems translated so well to the live set that it's hard to believe ML didn't become a huge hit across the US. To those of you who watched them grow through the years you will undoubtedly agree when I say that Miracle Legion is one of the great bands of the 80's/90's that were able to truly rock the house!

    4 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2003-05-12

I would say that this particular album is exactly what I need sometimes. It's calm, but not. It's fun, but not simplistic. It's what I would call emblematic of how I saw the times I grew up in (the mid-nineties).

It does, however, have its weak points. Some songs are musically weak and uninspired, which detracts from the album as a whole. However, if you're a fan of the lo-fi and The Adventures of Pete & Pete, you'll probably like this album.

    4 out of 5 stars velvetine.......2003-04-28

Although Drenched isn't my favorite ML album, it's still really good. The first time I listened to it, I was kind of disappointed. I, being the hopeful idiot, was hoping for another Surprise Surprise Surprise. Weird thing is, though, that when I first listened to SSS awhile back, I was also disappointed then for unknown reasons. Then I continued to listen to the album, and when I realized how great it was, it made quite an impact on me.

My experience with listening to Drenched is almost the same thing; at first I only liked a small handful of songs, but on repeated listens, I began to like every song quite a lot.

Drenched, in my opinion, sounds like the Polaris stuff mixed with ML recordings from the very late eighties (mainly "Me and Mr. Ray"). While not as good as either of those albums, it still holds up very well.

"Velvetine" is probably the best song on here; and is definetely one of ML's best songs, ever. It's a hard rocker filled with tension and anger, and always gets the listener's attention immedietely. "Sooner" is a fantastic opener, great to sing along to. "Snacks and Candy," the more popular track off this album, is very well written (lyrically) and is a pleasure to listen to.

Other standout tracks: "With a Wish," "Out to Play," "Waiting Room," and "Maybelline."

Although I love the old ML sound better (Surprise Surprise Surprise, The Backyard EP), this album is still better than nearly 99% of the crap being released nowadays. It'd be wise to pick this one up. You will most probably be hooked.

    5 out of 5 stars A top-notch Sousa collection.......2003-10-08

All of the best-known Sousa marches are contained within this collection, along with a few lesser-known marches. I suppose the producers of this album could have been a little more generous (it contains a little over 41 minutes in music), but one cannot find fault with the quality of the performances.

Sousa purists will note that some of the tempos are not quite what Sousa himself intended, but they should also appreciate the quality of the performances, which remind the listener more of the classic concert band, as opposed to the percussion-heavy marching band sound. We have all heard marching bands massacre Sousa marches on a regular basis; in reality, the Sousa band almost marched, and generally performed in a concert hall setting. This recording, with brass & reeds well-balanced & understated, and the percussion in a supporting rather dominating role, allows all of the complexities of Sousa's compostions to come to the fore.

It is true enough that these marches can be found in just about any recorded Sousa collection, but the calibre of the performance merits the inclusion of this CD in any devoted Sousa fan's collection.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Patriotic Groove.......2002-02-03

I got the tape of this album as a gift, and I always swore if I ever found it on CD I'd pick it up. It's a very likeable record, featuring solid, toe-tapping performances of all Sousa's best-known marches, plus some lesser-known but wonderful compositions. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because we own some old 78s recorded by the Sousa band, and some of the tempos and phrasings used on this CD are not quite what Sousa had in mind. But that's getting pretty picky, and frankly, this is a very easy CD to enjoy on its own merits. It gets a lot of play around our house, and not just on patriotic holidays, either.

John Philip Sousa was a great musician and a great American. These recorded relics are very fascinating, and sometimes most vivid, reminders of his greatness

5 out of 5 stars Great historical resource.......2000-08-24

This set consists of every recording released under the name of "the Sousa Band", from 1897-1930. Since some of these recordings are over 100 years old, they tend to be somewhat scratchy and occasionally faint. If you're a casual fan or you're buying your first Sousa record, your money can be better spent elsewhere.

However, these recordings are an invaluable resourse for students, performers, and teachers. Even with the limitations of early recording devices, there is no better demonstration of the style and nuance of the "March King" than these performances under his own baton. Also, the chance to actually hear Sousa's voice as he introduces the great "Stars and Stripes Forever" is to step into the past.
