4 out of 5 stars Really Good Compilation.......2006-08-08

A few weak tracks, but some real gems on here all performed on Taylor Acoustic Guitars. Steve Stevens (from Billy Idol) plays a great flamenco on Sadhana. Clint Black does a fine version of The Claw. And Amy Grant and Vince Vaughn perform a moving How Great Thou Art. Characterizing it as "New Age" is a bit unfair. Just some really good acoustic guitar performances from a good collection of artists including the late Michael Hedges and William Ackerman.

4 out of 5 stars If you love acoustic guitar....you need to get this CD........2005-09-14

I really enjoyed this CD very much. I like more 'romantic' guitar, but this is still very good. Check this CD out, you will enjoy it! The songs are very relaxing, makes you want to play...strum away.

For those of you who are gifted by being musically inclined, I would suggest listening to this album. Perhaps play along with it.

4 out of 5 stars Guitar Player.......2003-03-11

I had been searching for this album because I downloaded just one song from the web, Vince Gill's "How great thou art". It took me months to find out where it came from. The emotion in that one song, the way Vince plays it, is what drives me to play the guitar, if only I was that good! I don't really care for the taylor's advertizing a lot of good accoustical guitars out there. While the highlight will always be the song that sent me on the search in the first place, the rest is definately worth the price!

4 out of 5 stars A fine collection.......2001-12-07

Every track on the album is at least pretty good."The claw" by Clint Black is a tricky piece deftly handled."Java man" by Michael hedges is a work of virtuosity."Liquid Amber" by Laurence Juber has all the dreaminess the title implies."Marina" by Skip Ewing and B.J.Walker Jr. is one the most lovely, sun drenched, yet melancholy pieces of music you'll ever hear. But the most brilliant work on the album has to be "Sadhana" by Steve Stevens. This vibrant, rhythmically manic tour through the possibilities of the guitar has to be heard to be believed.Great sound, balance and superb artist selection.

3 out of 5 stars Some of the best instrumental, acoustic guitar I've heard..........2001-08-11

For me and my family, tracks 3, 6 and 10 standout immediately. As I continue listening I'm finding there are several others that I like even more. I'd say that about half of the tracks are to my liking while the vast majority demonstrate much ability and creativity. I am very pleased to own it.

5 out of 5 stars As super as VOL 1.......2007-01-19

Volume 2 is top quality instrumental work, and compares very well to one of my favorite CDs - Sounds of Wood & Steel Volume 1.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific Collection of Guitar Instrumentals.......2005-09-18

This second volume of the SOUNDS OF WOOD & STEEL series is a simply wonderful album of guitar instrumentals. As with the previous volume, each song features Taylor guitars (which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1999 when this CD was released).

There are numerous highlights, including Taylor co-founder Bob Taylor's rendition of "After the Gold Rush." [Note: Neil Young was an early proponent of the Taylor guitar.] Also, Elliot Easton's performance of "Caroline No" is amazing. Easton chose the song because of his working relationship with Brian Wilson (he has performed and recorded with Wilson) and his belief that it is the "prettiest pop ballad ever." In addition, the Hawaiian slack-key flavor of "The Island" performed by Jim Messina (with Kenny Loggins sittin' in providing wordless vocals) is a real joy.

Bottom line, there isn't a weak cut in the bunch. And don't be misled by the fact that this CD was released on the new age Windham Hill label. There's no navel-gazing guitar noodling here--just musicians sharing their love of guitars. Very satisfying. [Running Time - 47:47] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars great stuff!.......2004-11-25

What's not to like about this compilation? I'm not at all sure why some reviewers were "disappointed" by this cd. I'm thrilled to have so many leads to all of this talent. One shouldn't expect to like every tune on a cd such as this, because there are so many different styles, but I feel that the producers did an amazing job keeping the tone very similar, so that one can enjoy this cd from beginning to end. Keep in mind, too, that this type of music is designed to be background for reading, or writing a letter, or doing a puzzle, or studying, or just relaxing. It's SUPPOSED to be unobtrusive. It's not supposed to be mindblowing or alter your consciousness. It's just supposed to set a mood and help you mellow out, and it certainly does that artfully.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2002-01-16

If you like, even just like, acoustic guitar you will like this record. The perfect record for a candlelight dinner or peaceful quite evenings. I love just about every song on this record. Lovely, intricate guitar playing.

Listening to this record on the couch, with the lights off and my eyes closed, makes me feel like I am lying by a crackling creek, in the grass, under a blue sky, temperature about 80 degrees, when I was ten years old.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing compared to the first volume.......2000-05-25

The sound quality is great and the playing is top-notch. However, only a handful of tracks here (including "Caroline, No" Elliot Easton, "Liz & Opie" Victor Wooten, "Wings of the Morning" Doyle Dykes and maybe one or two more) seem inspired. Taken on it's own terms, the collection overall sounds pleasant enough but the weaker tracks come across as being here just for the project theme- to demo the Taylor Guitar sound. If you can only get one of the two volumes, Vol. 1 is absolutely the one to go with. This one is for serious guitar enthusiasts only or music collectors/completists who want these tracks because they may not be available elsewhere.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as #1 & #2.......2007-01-19

Good Instrumental and quality sound recording, but content not as overall pleasing as VOLs 1 & 2.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best.......2006-07-09

I play Taylor guitars and learned of this series when Volume 1 was released. I bought it, and loved it. The diversity was amazing. I couldn't wait for Volume 2, and bought it as soon as it was released. I loved it.

So it is with a heavy heart that Volume 3 didn't meet my lofty expectations. Its a good album. But it sounds more mainstream than either of the first two. And although I have listened to it several times, its not an album that is growing on me. I see a limited listening life fot this one. And a return to Volumes 1 and 2.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC!.......2003-09-20

What better way to pay tribute to the acoustic guitar than with an album by some of the world's most proficient and influential players? The musicians are world-class, and so is this album.
Dave Matthews commands with "Litho Blitho," while Robben Ford surprises with a unique version of Louis Armstrong's "St. James Infirmary."
Kenny Rogers, Randy Dorman and Rick Harper team up for an unforgettable "Night Winds;" Doyle Dykes paired with Duane Eddy are an unbeatable twosome.
All the stars whether singer, songwriter, guitar soloist or producer are here. It's a must-have for guitar aficionados.
