A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

A brief glance at the packaging for this recording might make you think New Age, and indeed this label normally offers recordings in that vein. The disc's cover tells nothing about the music inside--all we see are the ruins of an ancient abbey, the moon in the sky on the front, the sun on the back. But wait. If you get far enough to listen to the recording, you'll find one of the most beautiful and beautifully programmed choral recordings in the catalog. The compositions, organized into the categories "Music of the Morning Rite" and "Music of the Evening Rite," are mostly from 16th- century composers--Byrd, Taverner, Sheppard, White--with a few Gregorian chants and a gorgeous rendition of the 20th-century motet by Duruflé, "Ubi caritas." Conductor/choral music legend John Rutter has assembled a program that's both uplifting and restful; the performance is faultless. One could only complain about the short (39 and a half minutes) playing time. --David VernierCustomer Reviews:

--Brother Sun--
The first half of the disc is largely composed of pieces from the liturgical Morning Prayer cycle, concentrating on texts from Easter, the most important of Christian days. From the Alleluia to the Acclamations and Surrexit Christus Hodie (Christ is risen today), the flow from Gregorian Chant to compositions by Byrd, Taverner and Palestrina (giants of this type of music) in increasing energy and glory, as befits both a Morning service (time to wake up!) as well as a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Perhaps of particular note here is the cantoring of bass Gerald Finley in the Easter Acclamations.
--Sister Moon--
The second half of the disc concentrates on music of the evening; in particular, the Compline service, a service of unwinding and sombre meditation with which monastic communities conclude their days of work and worship. Many churches have reincorporated Compline into a regular cycle of services; some have even done so as a result of exposure to this recording. The music here is softer and less energetic than that of Morning prayer. This includes music from Whyte and Sheppard (also masters of the Medieval-to-Renaissance liturgical polyphony) as well as a brilliant motet by twentieth century composer Duruflé for the Ubi Caritas.
--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words, in both Latin and English, for each of the pieces recorded here. It has an excerpt from a prayer by St. Francis, and a basic introduction to the music relating it historically and liturgically. One thing conspicuously missing is any biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the basic listing of singers.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. For this particular recording, the choir consisted of eleven sopranos, six altos, six tenors, and six basses.
Cambridge Singers = Quality.......2002-05-23
American Gramaphone, please reissue this title........2000-03-30
John Rutter trains his singers to sing without vibrato, and blends their voices with such balance that they come together as a single instrument. The selection on this CD is perfect to demonstrate the clarity and richness of this ensemble. If American Gramaphone does reissue this title, I will be first in line to purchase it.

Customer Reviews:
I like this side of Scorpions..........2006-10-01
So, after 7 years of its release, I'm only giving it 4 stars, because there are so many ballads (and not precisely the group's best) in this album. 5 tracks certainly keep their jewel status through time and those are: Mysterious, Yellow butterfly, Skywriter, Aleyah and Du bist so schmutzig. I must admit that now when I listen to this record I usually skip from track 2 to 7. They're not bad songs, but I guess a little bit too mellow (except for Mind like a tree, but I never really liked the China White-kind of Scorpions sound). Im my opinion this record is much better than Unbreakable for the simple reason that they were still using their creativity to do something new and exciting, and not to try to "re-create" themselves (and failing to).
If you're a die-hard Scorps fan you must own it. If you just like the 80's stuff don't even look at it. If you are a newcomer and are interested in the band, this could be (depending on the music you like) a good start. I love Scorpions and as most everything the Scorpions does, this is great! Much better than other group's best stuff.
People who say this is bad don't understand music.......2006-02-27
This is what we call maturing. It doesn't mean they don't know how to rock anymore; it simply means that they've chosen to experiment a little on this album. And, in my opinion and I'm sure many other real Scorpions fans would agree, the band was very successful with this album.
Mysterious is a great opening track. Kinda reminds me of recent U2 (although the track may be slightly too long).
Obsession is a decent ballad.
10 Light Years Away is a great, melodious rock song.
Mind Like a Tree is good for all you who want to head bang to an impersonation of Disturbed.
Eye To Eye, What You Give Back, and Skywriter are all very original, great-written songs.
And then the last 3 songs are very good as well, ending off the album nicely.
This album has a certain thing that is difficult to achieve on a lot of albums: continuity. There is a certain uniform feeling that is existant throughout the entire album and it sorta binds all the songs together so that they go hand in hand with one another. This continuity is an important thing for an album to have in order for me to deem it successful.
Thanks for reading.
Certainly NOT the band you know and love..........2005-04-17
The seventies and eighties were decades that were kind to the Scorpions. The former saw the band's rise in musical power, and the latter was the decade in which the band gained massive mainstream success. Unfortunately for the once-great metal band, the nineties didn't go nearly as good. Percussionist Hermann Rarebell, one of the key members of the group, had left. With him gone, the band released Pure Instinct, an album which was, essentially, ballad overkill. It also hinted at the band moving in a new direction - certainly NOT the one the fans of their classic material wanted to see. The album was followed up a few short years later with Eye II Eye, released in 1999. Would the new album see a return to roots for the once-great metal band, or would it be a further tragic misstep? Read on for my review.
I've gotta say, being a life-long Scorpions fan, this album was a big disappointment - and I will not hesitate to say that this is the worst album the band has ever released. That said, though, it's not a bad album (It's bad by the band's standards, but since the standards of modern music are so quickly degrading, it's good by them.) This album features mostly ballads, just as Pure Instinct before it did - which beautifully demonstrates how much Hermann Rarebell's departure has hurt the band. A problem with the ballads is that, not only do they all sound pretty similar, but also that they are placed in a bad place on the album. For the most part, all the ballads come before all the rockers. Because of this, most listeners will lose interest in the album before they even get to the tracks that rock. Even the tracks that can be considered rockers are a far cry from anything the band did back in their heyday. Everything on here has a modernized rock sound on it - not a classic metal one. The hard rockers are more along the lines of the bands from the era in which the album was released. And even then, I'd be hesitant about calling these hard rockers or heavy metal tracks. If you don't believe me, listen to the album for yourself - you may be shocked. In the end, I DO believe this is a good album, but I also believe it pales in comparison to everything else the band has ever done.
This album's availability is dismal, just like their other nineties works. I have mixed emotions about this - these albums from this era aren't that great, but at the same time, their lack of availibility makes it harder for fans to complete their collections. For that reason, I'm hoping they get reissued sometime.
I only bought Eye II Eye for two reasons - I got it VERY cheap at a used CD retailer, and I needed it to go towards completing my Scorpions studio discography collection. If you're a fan of the band, I don't advise buying this album for anything but those two reasons. I admit, though, some people will get more into the album than others, and many will hate it. It is for this reason tht I ONLY recommend it to open-minded, die-hard fans of the band, or completists. Otherwise, there isn't a whole lot here worth your time or money.
The Scorpians ?????????.......2005-02-14
Stay far away from this if you only like the "Old" Scorpions.......2004-09-09
Just when you thought that Pure Instinct really fits with the worst Scorpions' album gold medal, here comes Eye II Eye to take the medal away.

It has been a great tool in getting the kids familiar with all different types of composers - from Baroque and Classical, to Romantics and someone modern composers.

More varied than their last collaboration........2005-05-10
Essentially, this is one long piece, working well as a coherent statement-- it moves through a number of moods, from Zorn screeching over electronic noise ("F***xotica", "Uffof") to delicate, open performances where simple balances fill space nicely ("Hilo Himo", "Espimo") to some almost straightforward work (the appropriately named ambient piece, "Bartime with Eno", "4ab"). The album really covers a lot of territory and remains engaging throughout.
Having stated this, I've listened to it no more than a handful of times since I got it-- its significantly better than "Nani Nani", but I still don't come back to it.

This is more like it........2004-11-13
But I bought it anyway, and kept it, becuase I love these guys! And this disc goes a greater distance towards showing their respective talents. The working philosophy seems to be the same as their prior disc- it was all recorded on the same day, and I doubt there was a lot of forethought, but the results are so much more interesting. Zorn actually plays his instruments- Eye is actually using some instruments (last time it was toys).
The Boredoms post '95 forays into increasingly tribal and ambient music have their root originate with Eye, and it is this eye that shows up for this session. This album is largely about mood and ambience rather than screaming and clowning around.
There is noise, beauty, a screeching sax/synth track, alien chanting and all around goodness. If you are a fan of either of these men, be not afraid, this disc delivers.

Puts D.C. on the Blues Map........2001-02-08
This superb collection of samples of a long-neglected Blues scene is both an eye-opener and an ear-opener for the uninitiated, including me. That this is Vol. II shows the unsuspected richness of this natural resource. The art and craftsmanship, the licks and riffs, the thumps and howls of these unrecognized musicians and vocalists pour out of the speakers and become the air in your lungs and the fever in your blood; only being there live tops it.
Wayne Kahn has reserved himself a table in Heaven's Blues Club.

Scorpions were stingless in this effort.......2005-09-14
It's not that bad.......2005-02-07
1. There are too many ballads (half of the songs). If you like the Scorpions, you expect some ballads, and probably appreciate some of them. In fact, most of them on this album are OK--maybe a little wimpier than normal--but still pretty good. There are just too many. They should have put the worst four of them on the end of the cd as "bonus tracks", which might have alleviated the impression that the entire album is lousy when it's not.
2. The track order is terrible. Six of the first eight songs are the aforementioned ballads, and the second and third tracks are quite possibly the two worst songs the Scorps have ever done. The disc picks up a lot in the second half, but by then most people have probably already snatched it from their cd player and flung it into the street.
3. The rock songs are more "modern" than what the Scorps have done in the past. They definitely don't pack the punch that songs from the early years do. BUT they are still good, and they still sound like the Scorpions. Program these seven songs together, then add the best three ballads at the end, and you've got a solid rock record. It may not be an exceptional album, but it still blows away 99% of the new music coming out these days. What are you gonna do if you don't buy this? ...wait for the new disc from Evanescence? ...jam out to the latest speed-metal cookie-monster band? Give me a break.
If you like the Scorpions, just buy this.
