5 out of 5 stars Fun and funky........2007-06-26

I bought this because of Mi Swing Es Tropical on the iPod commercials. The rest of the CD is just as much fun. I've never spent a lot of time in New York, but I imagine this is what Caribbean-New York must sound like. If you're thinking about buying it, buy it. It is exactly what you hope it will be.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent music!.......2007-06-03

This cd is astonishing! Its well rounded, welding in a vast variety of sounds from around the world, and I got to say that there isn't one track that I dislike on this cd. Each and every track is a hit! The hip hop tracks on this cd, I believe, really should represent hip hop today, instead of all the garbage and degrading words in its mainstream. The bottom line is, if you want to chill out some evening or even during the day, this would be the cd to do it too!

4 out of 5 stars Gateway to a Broader World of Groovy Music.......2007-04-14

I bought Endangered Species after hearing Cleopatra in New York off of Putumayo's Sahara Lounge CD. I was looking for something funky, "hip-hopish" and worldly. In my opinion, Cleopatra in New York Best represents what I was looking for on this CD. The music on this CD lives up to the description on its cover - i.e. the music is as varied as the people of New York City. The music is up temple and there are four or five other tracks that get bobbing my head and grooven in my car.

I was hoping for sophisticatedly produced tracks in the vein of the aforementioned Cleopatra, which successfully incorporates the Middle Eastern influenced stings, and vocal styling of Carol C with a distinctly funky, hip-hop beat. Most of the tracks do this quite well but a few of them are missing that "funky" element I was looking for.

Bottom Line: it's a good album and I highly recommend to those who, like me, are extremely tired of the stuff being played on Pop and R&B stations. If this is you, let this CD be a gateway to a broader world of groovy music.

5 out of 5 stars wow.........2007-02-06

really delicious, lots of variety, groovy dance music. cleopatra in NY has a texture like melt in your mouth taffy and a fragrance like honeysuckle. mi swing is more latin and has a luscious tropical feeling. simmered to perfection.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Damn Good.......2007-07-09

I recently purchased their last CD "Through Eyes" and loved. I then searched for this Cd and found it as entertaining as their first album. They should have never broken up.

5 out of 5 stars this is what music is all about.......2007-03-30

chris has one of the most beautiful voices and he switches through the songs to his screaming vocals really well. He's very talented. i like endangered species a lot and his other album through the eyes is equally awesome. i hope chris releases more flaw albums. He's busy with five bolt main, but i heard flaw will continue as a band with a new album coming out soon. :)

5 out of 5 stars Great piece of work........2007-02-03

These guys have their own style and thats what makes them unique and different, if you like Nu-metal or alternative rock that actually sounds good then you should check out this album. The standout tracks include Medicate, Wait for me, You've changed, Decide and Final cry the song that they've created have some great melodies whether it was a soft or hard song so you can tell that each track sounds different and the album rocks hard instead if being a boring and depressing mess, I have to admit that Nu-metal isn't my favorite genre due to the lack of talent and theres too much stupidity especially from bands like Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Distubed ect. however Flaw shows that they have alot of potential but it is very unfortunate that they have broken up, I highly recomend this excellent album.

4 out of 5 stars really good!!!.......2006-06-18

Once again a really good release from Flaw, not as good as "Through the Eyes" but still pretty good.It deserves a 4.5 stars instead of 4.

1 out of 5 stars Ridiculous.......2005-09-26

I was, and still am, a huge fan of 'Through The Eyes' which an incredible album. It was hardcore, and straight up with my liking. 'Endangered Species' ... well ... let's just say that every band sells out at one point or another, looks like Flaw just did it a little early. If you are a fan of their first album, this one will make you sick. Before I bought it, I hadn't heard any tracks off of it, but I figured, since it was Flaw, it was going to be good. Wrong. I took it back the next day (Sold it back to Record Connection). Anyone who gives this more than 3 stars has obviously not heard Flaw's first album, or they would be pissed at this album as well.

Apparently, though, the lead singer from Flaw (not sure if it's the lead singer) Made a different band called five.bolt.main ... You can check them out. The track "Pathetic" doesn't sound too bad, at least, not as bad as 'Endangered Species' does.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best post wreck Skynyrd album.......2006-11-02

The songs are great, the singer is awesome, and the lack of amps just makes it all better.

4 out of 5 stars Acoustic Masterpiece.......2006-02-09

Although the new line-up struggles to live up to the original line-up (regardless of member changes), this album is by far one of the greatest sounds to come from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Getting away from the Arena Rock style of Southern Rock they play so well, this album removes the loud and inserts the calm. The all acoustic album recreates some of the better songs released by the original Lynyrd Skynyrd and brings forth a few new ones as well. Songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Saturday Night Special" sound better arena style, but "Things Goin' On" and "Am I Losin'" sound so much sweeter acoustic. A definite must for true Lynyrd Skynyrd fans, and a recommended album for those interested in what the new line-up has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Skynyrd Unplugged.......2004-05-28

Released in 1994, Endangered Species is Lynyrd Skynyrd's response to the "unplugged" phenomenon, featuring all acoustic instruments. Typically, Skynyrd delivers the goods, and this is a great disc!! While it has a couple of their hits ("Sweet Home Alabama", "Saturday Night Special" & "I Ain't The One"), it also has a strong collection of lesser known songs ("Down South Jukin", "Things Goin' On", "Am I Losin'", "Poison Whiskey"), as well as "The Last Rebel", from the post-crash version of the band. All of these are great, especially Sweet Home Alabama. The acoustic versions have a wonderful "laid back" feel, like your hanging out while the guys jam. The guitar playing is predictably strong, there's some great slide guitar or dobro on a couple of songs.

The best part, though, is the 5 new songs. "Devil In The Bottle", is worth the price of the CD, up there among my favorite Skynyrd songs. "All I have is a Song", "Good Luck, Bad Luck" and "Hillbilly Blues" are all top-notch. There's also a cover of "Heatbreak Hotel", with a bluesy feel.

From a personel standpoint, there's 4 of the original members: guitarists Gary Rossington and Ed King, bassist Leon Wilkerson, and, of course, Billy Powell on the piano. Johnny Van Zant continues to fill brother Ronnie's shoes as vocalist, as he has on all of the post-crash Skynyrd efforts. Also on guitar is Mike Estes, and Owen Hale plays drums.

This disc is a must-have for any Skynyrd fan!!

5 out of 5 stars mechanic.......2004-02-22

nothing better than some good ole down home skynyrd......

3 out of 5 stars Gimme Three Stars.......2003-12-31

Good Singing. Good playing. The only great Skynyrd disc from the "reunion" band. The newer songs almost stand up to the classics.Johnny Van Zandt's vocals are especially good.Any fan from any era should love it.

5 out of 5 stars Emcees like him are an Endangered species!.......2006-09-27

Standout tracks: TWINZ, HOW WE ROLL, OFF THE BOOKS(classic), BANNED FROM TV(minus NORE's crappy verse), MAMMA, BRAVE IN THE HEART, THE DREAM SHATTERER(original version), JOHN BLAZE(ccclassic!), MY WORLD WORLD, FIRE WATER(even Fat Joe's verse was fire), CLASSIC VERSES(Remy Ma before she became wack), WISHFUL THINKING and HOW WE ROLL98. Filler none. Bottom Line: Big Pun was definetely a force to be reckoned with. He had a killer flow his punchlines were hilarious and last but definetely not least he was hip hop. Its unfortunate that his right hand man(Fat Joe)went pop after he died. If Pun was alive now one would have to wonder if he could still respect a fool that put out wack albums like Jelous Ones Still Envy, Loyalty and All Or Nothing?

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2002-12-17

This album is a must have for any Big Pun fan. Christopher Rios will be missed, but his music lives on and will always be remembered for his mastery with words. A Society for the Commonwealth Master Lyricist, Big Pun delivers where others fall short. This CD is the best way to get to know this man's lyrical genius. If you have to have one Big Pun album, let it be this one.

3 out of 5 stars Big Punisher= Endangered Species.......2002-12-01

The one person who can be credited with bringing latin hiphop to the forefront is Big Punisher aka Christopher Rios, Terror Squads best MC,. "Endangered Species" is first and maybe only post-death album, new tracks include the lead single "How we Roll" feat. Ashanti is a excellent track where Pun drops addictive verses, among Puns best work ever. "Mamma" feat. Tony Sunshine, follows and is another nice new unreleased track. "Brave in the Heart" feat. Terror Squad and "My World" are also new material and are decent tracks. Classic tracks like "You aint a killer" and "Wishfull thinking" feat. Kool G Rap and B-Real are nice additions, but some other classic tracks like "Toe to Toe" feat. Cuban Link, the original version of his hit song"Im not a player" and "You Came Up" feat. Noreaga are not included. Another nice Nore/Pun/Camron/Lox collab "Banned from TV" is included though. Album ends with some remix tracks, and 98 version of how we roll. I just wish that they had made a greatest hits album instead of throwing in new material with old material, and not really giving enough of either. When you already own both his previous albums this one is not really worth getting. This album is no "Capital Punishment", nor is it like his 2nd album "Yeaah Baby" but it is still has some gems like How we Roll, and is worth taking a look at when your at the local record store.

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2002-11-11

This is a collection of some of Big Pun's best work; but this is only a fraction of what he has to offer...

3 out of 5 stars like we really needed this.......2002-10-28

big pun joined the make more cd's while I'm dead club along with 2pac, biggie, and eazy still if you're a diehard fan this is way your taste than mine ashanti's on here who have never met pun before his death and you know fat joe pops on here too.

5 out of 5 stars top rated.......2004-06-09

Very good album. Being more likely a guitar listener I must say
that I rarely find a player excites me as Mr. Herring with his
talented playing . But the album apart from the guitar thing is
indeed a very good album and there is no bad song in this work.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good.......2004-05-28

If you really like good music, no matter if Jazz, if Rock or a fusion between Jazz and Rock, this is a great album for you, buy it, buy it, buy it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars MORE QUALITY HERRING.......2003-10-10

Sorry, this is not a HERRING CD and all the musos on this CD are awesome. It is just that HERRING is so outstanding that everything by this master is a must have. No exception here, great fusion, brilliant compositions, brilliant playing by all concerned and a hefty dose of originality. Not as heavy or bluesy as PROJECT Z, but just as stimulating and entertaining.
If you like the guitar or JAZZ / FUSION, you cannot afford to be without this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Power Progressions.......2003-09-06

The music on this album conjures up words like daredevil, danger, and intrigue. The music is definitely charted, but the vibe is that it was recorded in one session direct to disk (or tape). In other words, these guys jam. The first track, Headstrong, as you can hear from the sample, is a stomp alright, and cinematic too. That little ascending sequence that rounds up the refrain is like dinosaurs on the rampage. Watch out! The only weak track is Camel Lope, which never goes anywhere. Those camels need a good kick in the bum! Overall, T is good with patterns, and Jimmy Herring makes those patterns sing. Yeah baby.

4 out of 5 stars tasteful fusion, southern-fried.......2002-01-31

I would have to disagree with the previous review in the sense that I wouldn't call this jam band music at all. Instead, it seems to me to fall into the jazz fusion arena a'la Jeff Beck "Wired" and "Blow By Blow," with a southern flavor that reflects the previous bands these players have been in. There are many Little Feat moments that arise from the rhythm section, but remember that Little Feat were very tight ensemble players. There are also quite a few Dixie Dregs moments in here, too--at times making you think that Steve Morse has snuck up and grabbed the guitar.

This is highly-arranged music, but doesn't come off overly structured because truly great musicians can always find ways to mix in soloing to sound spontaneous yet tight. If you love great playing, stop-on-a-dime instrumental arrangements, and a hint of southern greasiness, you'll love this record.

Ex Girls have been near and dear to my heart for some time now. I have enjoyed their musical changes and craziness, while others have cringed. This album is a sound of mature musicians. This album rocks like the rest. I recommend this for any fan of Ex Girls. Enjoy!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Total insanity!.......2005-03-18

When I first looked at the cover of this album, I thought to myself, "Wow, these girls look pretty crazy!" And I was right! The best way to describe their music would be an upbeat blend of punk rock electronic opera from outer space. Very catchy and very enjoyable music... I recommend it to anyone who's looking for something refereshing and interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Strong, beautiful, funky........2004-06-08

eX-Girls fourth proper album, their second to be released in the U.S., is one of their strongest releases. The quickest way to sum it up would be: harmonized heavy space rock collides with Gary Numan. The opening track, "e-sa-ya", features strings and a good heavy bass line, with operatic vocals in Japanese. Towards the end, heavy tom-tom drumming kicks in {performed wonderfully live by drummer Chapple}. The following two tracks hint at the phrenetic energy of Melt Banana while also sporting sudden transitions into campy carnival vocal styles and more operatic bits. A later track, 'Rocket Keronian' is another heavy rock piece with occasional and beautiful 80's new wave guitar moments.

The fourth track, "Pujeva", breaks out a danceable energy with electro-funk beats and bass supplanted by roaring guitar and the omnipresent three-part harmonies the girls are so adept at. This would make a great club anthem if you could find a place daring to play it.

New Pulse takes time out for harmonic drones, distorted drumming and experimental guitar jams.

Tracks like 'Venus vs Gas Onna' and 'Resonance' show some great song craft and engineering, each memorable. "Venus vs Gas Onna" builds its structure out of strange sounding time signatures, a beautiful bass line, acoustic guitars, and building drones. "Resonance" strips the sound down for much of the piece to focus on some strong and lovely vocals (eX-Girl has a mostly a cappella CD, "Big when Far, Small when Close" which really showcases their vocal abilities).

In "Dodo" there seems to be a strong Siouxsie and the Banshees influence (eX-Girl has toured with Siouxsie) mixed in with girl-punk enthusiasm. It leads into the upbeat extended prog rock closer, "Letter from Mr Triscuits".

"Endangered Species" is perhaps the strongest release yet from this Japanese band, who put on a stage show to match the intense quirkiness of the music. And, while quirky, this is not novelty. Their strong singing abilities and their surprising musical capabilities (evidenced when watching them play live) combine under the influence and guidance of avant garde Japanese sound artist Hoppy Kamiyama to pack a well knit sonic punch from many angles.

    4 out of 5 stars wow.......2004-05-25

Many bands from Japan are really good or novelty acts. X-girl is a really unique band who sings in both English and Japanese. Nothing is awkward. Nothing is keeping them back. This band has been together since 1997. Each member sings. They are quite entertaining as a live act. The wear costumes, makeup, and head masks. Hoppy Kamiyama who is more known for his efforts in Japanese noise produced this album. This album combines pop and noise. It is not quirky at all. "E-Sa-Ya" sounds more like Japanese folk music, rock, and classical. "Pretty You Ugly" is more punk. "Pujeva" is a cool electro track that is more like Cooler Kids. They offer a bunch of interesting sounds. This may be a band to check out anyway.

      1 out of 5 stars Oh ! the pain........2006-07-03

I remember buying this album in anticipation that they would continue where "Sir Army Suite" left off. Unfortunately my hopes were dashed and found myself with a new frisbee. I tried listening to it a couple days later hoping that what I heard was a bad dream and that it would be something I could salvage...only "all good things" was the only track that had an ounce of playability attached to that word.

There so-called come back album or final epitah "Magentalane" would only confirm the bloom was off the rose and that Klaatu had nothing more in the tank or anything to offer.

      2 out of 5 stars Klaatu's fourth album got away from them . . . ........2004-01-06

Klaatu's fourth (of five studio and two 'hits' packages) album got away from them . . . . literally. Capitol records offered them a chance to "redeem" themselves by allowing them to do it Capitol's way. With their unappreciated genius steadily tanking their career, the band this time sent demos to their producer in L.A., who recorded the basic backing tracks without the band, then later overdubbed or replaced much of the band's contributions with session players. Indeed, it appears that drummer Terry Draper doesn't actually play drums on the album.

What emerged from the sessions was 1981's "endangered species," a generic-sounding 80's pop that neither engaged, tantalized, nor salvaged their career. (It could have been a sad finish for perhaps the greatest "prog-pop" group ever, were it not for a lucky Canadian break.) New Producer Chris Bond deep-sixed their multi-layered, laborious, meticulous, clever M.O., and replaced it with "American"-sounding songs designed for that all-important "airplay."

There are two geniune gems here: "Sell Out Sell Out" is a tongue-in-cheek faux-autobiographical paean to their real-lilfe situation (and touches an amusing and melancholy chord). It's well-written, well-sung, and well-placed. Sadly, as the second-to the-last song, it is also too little, too late to save the album. Also, sadly, this song is NOT on either of Klaatu's hit's packages - this is the only place you'll find it. The last song "All Good Things (Must Pass)" is tender and sappy enough to actually bring a tear to your eye. John Woloschuck's vocals are lovely and the guitar (also Woloschuck's) is crisp and crystalline.

The rest of the songs aren't bad; they simply aren't great, and certainly don't reach the bar set by most of their previous material. This one's for the Klaatu completist only. You're better off buying the first two albums "3:47 EST" and "Hope" (which are also available as a 2-albums-on one-CD special) if you want to know what everyone was excited about in the late 70's.
