All of Born From Pain's releases have been amazing but this would it probably their best yet. They add a little something new to this one, even a short spurt of death metal vocals on track 5. An amazing track by the way, BFP has recently parted ways with their vocalist and there has been talk of First Blood's singer Carl working with them in the future.

Defintiely not for you cartwheeling, skinny, tight pant wearing, karate chop, dorky hat, emotional, backpack wearing geeks. You gay-egde kids should go get the new Blink 182. Fans of Torture Killer, Slayer, SOD (Speak English Or Die), and Sheer Terror should pick this up. Long live violent circle pits.(DRI--1986)

4 out of 5 stars Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

5 out of 5 stars Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2001-12-25

Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2001-11-30

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

4 out of 5 stars A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

5 out of 5 stars I Got this at the right time, What a bargin for this prime album........2006-10-22

I managed to pick this up when it was brand new, first released for the rediculously low price of $11.99 factory sealed from a large chain store. I have owned this album on cassette for years, and boy did I snag this at the right time. This box set is awesome, and one heck of a value. The difinitive War and Pain set.

Disc one contains the 9 tracks of war and pain-remasted and sound just as crisp and raw/fresh as the day they were layed down.
Then-Voivod added live songs from their first show ANACHRONISM-tracks 10,11,12.
Next, they added the Metal Massacre 5 sessions for track 13, 14, and 15.

Disc two: This is the prized Morgoth Invasion: Live Demo Sessions december 1984. 16 tracks of prime Voivod as they lauch into the premier canadian thrash metal band role.

Disc three-CD ROM enhanced CD: This was the disc I nearly wet myself over. I have always loved Enhanced CD's. This has so much data on it, it's tought to fit here, and I'm still discovering stuff on it. Here's a brief rundown. It has the biography 1985, coments from 2003, lyrics, sound, Many many video clips (20 minutes or more at least, pics, art, wallpapers, and screensavers.

If you are a voivod fan, you must, and I repeat, you must get this album, It is silly if you didn't. I would have easilly paid 20-25 dollars for this, but you don't have to, so buy it ASAP!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars superb box set.......2004-07-18

wow i was having war and pain but i have buy it because for the demos and and of course the clip thanks to metal blade

5 out of 5 stars What a bargain!.......2004-07-03

I must assume that if your interested in Voivod's, "War And Pain", then you must know something about real heavy metal.
Their debut album way back from 1984 is an undeniable classic. Early Voivod was something completely different, but if you were into bands like Slayer, Venom and Kill 'em All era Metallica, You most likely would like Voivod.
"War And Pain" is a brutal record. All the crazy riffs, the thundering bass, nuclear drumblasts and bloodcurdling vo-kills carry you into the land of the Voivod. A warrior vampire-lord with a lust for death. This album is all killer and no filler.
But, don't forget, there are 3 cd's. The "War And Pain" album, a live demo recording from 1984, which, if you appreciate real history, you will not mind the sound of the live disc. In my opinion, it's one of the heaviest things I've heard. And, a bonus disc for your computer which has a video, pics, art, lyrics and more.
You cannot go wrong by buying the first album. Hardcore all the way! This 3 cd set is a good buy and I bet will be hard to find one day so get it while you can!

Album Description

The idealistic appeal of "fighting the good fight" against the fascist troops of General Francisco Franco as he warred against Spain's democratically elected government drew more than 45,000 volunteer soldiers from over 50 countries during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). This influx created a canon of war-related songs sung by the freedom fighters and revived during the American folk boom of the Fifties.

SPAIN IN MY HEART presents new recordings of vintage and recent songs inspired by the conflict and performed by an international roster of musicians. The United States is represented by folk's activist icon, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, master instrumentalist/vocalist John McCutcheon, bluegrass singer/fiddler Laurie Lewis, East L.A.'s Quetzal, multicultural singer/songwriter/actress Michele Greene, and Joel and Jamaica Rafael of the Joel Rafael Band. From Mexico and Nicaragua come vocalist Lila Downs and Duo Guardabarranco, respectively. The Irish volunteers are solo artist Aoife Clancy, formerly of Cherish the Ladies, and Shay Black of The Black Family. Spain itself is represented by two of its leading contemporary singers, Eliseo Parra and Uxía.

The songs here, acoustic-based and many in Spanish, form a surprisingly delicate mosaic. Rather than emulating the strident chaos of battle, the CD conveys more subtle aspects of the conflict - yearning for simpler times ("Asturias," "En La Plaza De Mi Pueblo"); longing for distant loved ones ("The Bantry Girls' Lament"); the equal significance of life, love and death ("Llegó Con Tres Heridas"). The war and the bravery of the anti-fascist forces are addressed in such songs as "Jarama Valley," "El Quinto Regimiento," "Taste of Ashes," and "The Abraham Lincoln Brigade."

No matter in what language the songs are performed, the bravery, pain and loss felt by soldiers and civilians alike are rendered with a conviction and feeling that transcends words and forges an aching link with the listener.

3 out of 5 stars La música bien, la letra no tanto.......2005-05-03

5 out of 5 stars Keeps Alive the Spirit of Justice and Freedom.......2004-08-06

As the son of a British International Brigade veteran and a Spanish Republican refugee,I grew up with the pain of betrayal, defeat, and exile. Songs helped to sustain us during the long dark years of Franco's dictatorship. This record captures the emotion, joy, and beauty of many of those songs, as well as some new ones, and keeps alive the spirit which took thousands of volunteers from around the world to fight for justice and freedom in Spain.

4 out of 5 stars solid and raw old skool trash with a difference.......2007-06-10

From the openning shrieks of "Voivooooooooodddd..." to the distinctive odd-beat of closing "Nuclear War" this is a great recording. Maybe its just me but I hear some musical influences from Motorhead to vocal nods to Rob Halford in the mix...all wondrous stuff w/superb musicialship by the Players and well constructed songs with good hooks and distinctive rythms not all sounding...lots of variety and tempo. Powerful raw production cuts like a razor. Excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Voivooooood!!!!.......2004-07-17

Canada has a fine Rock and Metal tradition, but there seems to be something about the frozen North which seems to warp the minds of musicians a little. Canada's greatest export, Rush, forged a reputation for producing highly imaginative Progressive Rock with a hint of the unusual, even for the experimental world of Prog Rock.

Voivod did the same with Thrash Metal. These four twisted musicians produced one of the oddest albums of Thrash's early days. While Metallica and Slayer were content to play it straight and fast, Voivod seemed to make things deliberately difficult for themselves on `War And Pain', opting for a complex and choppy songwriting style. Playing at a speed where it would be easy to trip and stumble, the band doesn't miss a note. Think it sounds easy? Check Possessed or early Celtic Frost for examples of bands playing too fast for their own good then.

Title track "War And Pain" for example mixes up several riffs, which seem to tumble past like a rockslide, and are bridged together by guitar solos or rumbling drum fills, all the while Snake shouts blank verse lyrics of the horrors of war over it all. Sounds complex? It's the most straightforward song on the album.

Piggy was an incredibly underrated guitarist. Most bands of the time went for a twin guitar line, either to cover for lack of ability or to fill in holes when playing fast. Piggy carried all the guitar duties on his own. He possessed a killer chainsaw tone which cut red raw to the bone, and was able to slip effortlessly from rhythms to solos and back again. This album avoids double tracking the guitars, so during solos the rhythm drops out and is picked up by Blacky on bass. The galloping rhythmic pattern of the final track "Nuclear War" features countless guitar/bass interchanges, and it is difficult to keep up with who is playing what.

It's not just the music which is unusual. Vocalist Snake invented the Voivod, a creature that lives in a violent, dark cyber world, and is fond of torture and killing. The Voivod continued to pop up on subsequent albums. Snake's lyrics use simplistic words to express complex themes, probably because of the band's French Canadian heritage, where English is only a secondary language.

At a time when Speed Metal bands were stealing Iron Maiden and Judas Priest riffs to impress their fans, Voivod blew them all away with a raw and truly original Thrash creation. Unfortunately, most Metal fans in 1984 weren't prepared for such experimentation, and `War And Pain' remains a forgotten pearl cast before undeserving swine.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent 80's metal.......2004-04-15

This is probably the best Voivod album ever. Being their first it is definitely a far cry from their later progressive work. It's raw power is still enjoyable to this day, although it is a bit dated. Word on the street is that a 3 disc War and Pain box set is forthcoming. Long live Voivod!

5 out of 5 stars best voivod album.......2004-03-18

this was by far their best and what true voivod was about, the best songs are voivod, blower (from a metal massecre comp),suck your bone and nuclear war they all are good, get killing technology next then roooaarrr i met these guys they are all great the new album with jason newsted is good too but get the first three first in the order i said then get the others my first experiene of voivod was when i was nine and saw their video clouds in my hosue on the show liquid television back in 92 remember that plus voivod headed one of the best concerts of all time world war 3 with the likes of possessed, celtic frost(who are coming back),destruction(who are still good live) and nasty savage(who are still great live) in 1985 wish i was there well get this album along with ones by the bands i mentioned earlier ones only now they have jason newsted of flotsam and jetsam and metallica in there note he was not on this album it was blacky and yes i knew about them before he was in check the first three out and then get the new one then get the rest with snake also check them out live they are still great suck your bone!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good raw thrash..........2003-03-25

I've never been a huge fan of Voivod, but I was pleasantly surprised by this album. Very raw and over-the-top, with raspy vocals and plenty of energy. I'll definitely be checking out some of their other stuff as well, as this one is really growing on me...

Heard this band has had some success in Europe,so I assume they're trying for an American fan base.Their sound is somewhat complex. They combine funk, metal, punk and hip-hop.Didn't really do all THAT much for me.A couple of tracks I thought were 'okay' were "Mental","Respected" and the heavy-duty "Spiritual Warfare".If you're into the likes Fishbone,Bad Brains and Living Colour, you'll most likely get more out of this CD than I did.

5 out of 5 stars How Dub War is better than any other band........1999-05-04

Dub War. I think those two words can give an average person plenty of words to think about. To me it says metal, reggae, punk, and mixed. It is just really awsome. The way they fuse together everything is just absolutely but kind of terrifyingly delightful! BUY IT!

    3 out of 5 stars Its OK.......1998-12-08

Ok I am a serious Dub War fan and I think that the group could have done better than they did on Pain. Although a couple songs kick major ass ( and I mean major!)like Spiritual Warfare, Respected, and Pain, the rest of the album isn't about to harmonize me. Some of their songs are downright annoying. I think the boys could have done much much better. Maybe next time, eh? I will say this--If you are a really hardcore fan of Dub War, then buy it--if not, borrow it. Get Wrong Side of Beautiful or Enemy Maker instead.

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD A REGGAE SINGER IN A METAL BAND? YOU HAVE NOW! BENJI IS AWESOME. I READ ABOUT THESE GUYS IN A MAGAZINE AND I WAS KIND OF SKEPTICAL AT FIRST. I MEAN A REGGAE SINGER IN A HARD MUSIC BAND, NO WAY IS THAT GONNA WORK RIGHT? WRONG! DUB-WAR HAS STARTED SOMETHING COMPLETELY KNEW. I ONLY HOPE MORE REGGAE STYLE SINGERS WILL HEAR DUB-WAR AND GET INTO THE ACT. YOU CAN ALSO HEAR BENJI ON SOULFLY'S NEW ALBUM.
