More than just Erlend Oye's temporary departure from Kings of Convenience, Unrest is an amalgam of heartfelt lyrics from the wrong side of love's tracks, with strains of bitterness present but never overwhelming. In true minstrel fashion, Norway's troubadour invites 10 different electronic producers from 10 different cities to get involved in the project. The result is largely successful; Oye's warm tones have a restraining quality that offsets any uptempo dominance by artists more used to making music for dance floors. Morgan Geist, Prefuse 73, Kompis, and Schneider TM are among the collaborative line up that, by the end, makes one wonder whether they are redefining the electronica "easy listening" experience. --Found Sounds

5 out of 5 stars Undiscovered Genius.......2007-02-20

Maybe I have my head in the sand, but if my then girlfriend (and now wife) had not spent 6 months in Denmark, I might never have discovered Erlend Oye and consequently missed out on one of the best musicians I have had the fortune of listening to. The cd flows so well and is a natural departure for Oye, exploring the more electronic and groovy side of himself that is the flip of his equally satisfying Kings of Convenience work. Oye injects his music with an intellectual flavour while maintaining a fun and charismatic vibe that is as comfortable listening to on a Sunday morning as it is Saturday night.

4 out of 5 stars DJ Erlend at the helm.......2006-07-19

This record will strike you as out of character for Mr. Oye. But then again, if you strip away the synthetic beats, you can hear classic Kings of Convenience song structure and lyric styles emerge. But rather than strip away anything presented by the artist, take a long drive and a good listen to the fresh new sounds you are hearing. They are quite intelligently crafted, and enjoyable to bop your head to.

The last track on the album is my personal favorite. And the album concept as a whole sounds like it must have been fun to make.

5 out of 5 stars Postal Service is not even close.......2006-02-11

I bought Postal Service "Give Up" since I read great reviews about it.Well,Erlend Oye "Unrest" is far better than the so overrated Postal Service album.Erlend Oye's voice is simply beautiful and the album does not have any fillers like the boring "Give up".I am a big fan of Kings of Convenience, and I admit that I like them better than Erlend's solo effort, but it is still a great album.

4 out of 5 stars Kings of Convenience and indie electronic fans will LOVE this! - 4.5 stars.......2006-01-10

I knew that Erlend Oye was a very talented singer and musician, but I was NOT expecting this album to be this good. Erlend still has an extremely pleasant voice, and the production here is surprisingly interesting and fantastic (though it's relatively simple - minimalism, I suppose). I would argue, however, that if it wasn't Erlend singing then this would be a merely "good" album (he makes every song he sings THAT much better). While the production is very fun and interesting to pay attention to, the album is also surprisingly dancy (and somewhat mellow)! I never would've guessed that this would be a great party or club album. The lyrics, as usual with Erlend, are also well worth your time - they're not just there to be catchy. My personal favorite track is definitely the first one, "Ghost Trains". Practically everything about this is fantastic, and if you're an Erlend Oye or indie electronic fan I don't think there's any way that you won't love this (perhaps I like this a lot because I love Erlend Oye so much, but is that so wrong?). Also, I'm not sure how to explain it, but this album just seems so "new" and "different" to me compared to the 1,500+ other albums I've listened to (I'm not sure how to explain why, though). Anyways - If you liked this album then chances are you'll love basically anything by the Kings Of Convenience. Highly recommended!

Highlights include:
"Ghost Trains"
"Sheltered Life"
the rest is good, too

Why am I the first person to review this album? Is it because the rest of our country is too diluted by rappers who use three words to build their music career, or because your favorite radio station has no clue either?

This is what all music will be sounding like in 2025, so if you want to be futuristic to your friends' faces, get this album. I would break down every song, but this CD is basically "how it should be... being young."

5 out of 5 stars Clearing the air..........2006-05-14

Okay, you're looking at Unrest by Henry Cow. There is a reason you're here, you didn't just stumble across it. Despite the opinions of some, this gem has two distinct sides. One relatively standard in composition, the other purposely experimental. The balance is expertly measured, and pleasing to anyone with a taste for this type of music. I'd venture to say Modern Jazz/Rock has seen few pieces as well defined and pleasantly melodic as "Bittern..", "Half Awake..", "Solemn Music", or "Ruins". As informed as this might have been by the Canterbury or Zappa ethic, it stands alone, especially with the highly listenable experimental half.

Have an open mind, for goodness sakes.

1 out of 5 stars Musicians in search of a tune........2006-02-20

Henry cow come from that school of thought that is the more abstract your music the better you will be thought of. Wrong. This is absolute drivel from beginning to end. Only Virgin records could give a band like this such free reign to doodle about. There is one decent Firth guitar solo and the rest is firmly in the Ornette Coleman/Free jazz idiom. Totally unlistenable. At least parts of 'leg end' (nirvana for mice) had some semblance of continuity, but even that was lost by the middle of side two. The thing is the band can play, so why this obsession with strange time signatures and weirdness? They reached an absolute nadir on the live 'greasy truckers 2' the most pretencious musings since Terry Riley in the late sixties. This is not music and i'm angry at myself for giving them a second chance and going by the great reviews this was given. At least bands like Egg (most of the time) knew that other people than themselves were listening.

5 out of 5 stars Free jazz, modern classical, and progressive rock.......2006-01-03

This incredible album was released in 1974 and fuses elements of free jazz and modern classical with progressive rock into an impenetrably dense wall of sound. To the uninitiated, this sometimes chaotic music can be fairly intimidating and could possibly be perceived as icy, distant, and intellectual. All of the musicians are superb and play a wide variety of instruments including several types of woodwinds: Chris Cutler (drums/percussion), John Greaves (bass, piano, voice), Tim Hodgkinson (organ, alto sax, clarinet, piano), Lindsay Cooper (bassoon, oboe, recorder, voice), and Fred Frith (guitar, violin, xylophone, piano). The first three pieces, including the 12'07 Ruins, are traditional in the sense that melodies, harmonies, and rhythms, albeit very sophisticated, are presented in a manner that the contours of each piece take on the shape of rock music. However, starting with the piece Linguaphonie, recognizable structure begins to dissolve and the music becomes more in keeping with the stylistic attributes of modern classical. In short, everything is pretty much thrown out the window and the music becomes a swirl of random sounds, which reaches a peak on the 3'00" Upon Entering the Hotel Adlon. This piece is a furious explosion of bass, drums and woodwind parts without a discernible rhythm or tonal center. In 1975, Henry Cow would merge with the avant-garde outfit Slapp Happy and develop a type of progressive rock even more complex than that practiced by Gentle Giant. This resulted in the remarkable album In Praise of Learning, which is also highly recommended.

sitting in my room after hearing this album for the first time i was helpless. for a lack of a better phrase i saw the light. i knew now what i had to do. go grind-core. never has a band influenced me like them. everything i had done up till that moment ment nothing. this band marked a new beginning in my life and i would stongely suggest this album to any younge punk. disrupt changed my life track 1 - 30 was the greatest thing i have heard in the scene for a while!

5 out of 5 stars relentless crust-core the stays consistantly vicious.......1999-08-19

Disrupt was one of the greatest crust-core, hardcore punk, crust punk bands to come out of New England, none the less the world. Their influence has been felt throughout underground hardcore and punk scenes across the globe. This CD is a true representation of their work. It has a rather surprisingly good sound quality to it and contains extra songs from some of their old releases for example their "Smash Divisions" seven-inch. This album is fast and vicious straight through the last song. Split male vocalists scream and growl about such topics as domestic abuse, vivisection, and the disease known as greed. For punk, hardcore, and metal fans this is a true treat, for everyone else its noise. Definitely check this album out!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing band: sound great, great message, too........1999-03-17

These grindcore vegans from Massachusettes are among the best bands that has EVER existed! Seriously! Too bad they broke up (half of 'em are now in GRIEF). This CD defies description (because it's so damn good). If you like punk, hardcore or metal, this album is a must!

    5 out of 5 stars unrest = mmmmmmmm!.......2007-07-23

Unrest's biggest seller "Perfect Teeth" brings Teen Beat founder Mark Robinson's affection for Factory Records and 4AD full circle: it was released on 4AD with the same beautiful packaging that label is known for, and has a lush pop vibe throughout, taking threads from post-Velvets Nico, the headlong rush of the Pixies, and the sort of uplifting cinematic dreampop the Cocteau Twins specialized in and weaving it all into a superb record.

4 out of 5 stars Strange and thrilling!.......2003-05-16

Strange and thrilling is the only way to describe this pop-trio. They delve into droning electronica ("Food & Drink Synthesizer"), super-catchy pop tunes ("Make Out Club") and frothy, orchestral songs dripping with harmonies ("West Coast Love Affair"). If you like Radiohead, or, on the FAR FAR side of the spectrum, Air Supply, then you'll appreciate the groove of this cd!

4 out of 5 stars Indie Pop that delivers in the catchy department.......2006-07-04

These songs are really catchy. It takes me back to a lot of my favorite indie pop of the 80's and 90's. I hear early REM, The Feelies, The Barnabys, The Wedding Present, The Connells, The Bats, The Chills and other great bands when I hear this album, but Human Television really makes the sound their own at the same time. Jangly guitar is prevalent, but they also can rock. The vocals aren't very unique but are just sour enough to complement the poppiness of their songs perfectly.

4 out of 5 stars A Rose By Any Other Name.......2005-02-06

With a name like Human Television, you might think this Philly-by-way-of-Gainsville quartet sounds like the Human League or Television. But what's in a name anyway? On their debut EP, they sound more like REM--minus Michael Stipe's vocals--or the Wedding Present--minus (some of) the speed. If you like jangle: they're the band for you. At times, they even remind me of New Zealand's Chills, one of the best jangle bands of all time. That said, I think I prefer their harder-edged material to the soft. Here's hoping their first full-length has more songs like the driving "Sick With Redundancy Check" than poppy "Saw You Walking By."

I agree. I found this record in a store in sweden. I had heard that Green Day's singer produced one of Social Unrest's album, but nothing more. I heard a pair of songs in the shop. I thought: it sounds ok. Now I think: Great. great, great, i am lucky. Where can i find more? Why do i discover this great band when you can never hear to them live?

I found this CD at a used CD store for 2 bucks. What a deal! I had only heard of them because I had seen their name on the CD booklet of Bad Religion's All Ages. It was on a flyer for a concert where Bad Religion opened for them. This CD is really muscially impressive, I must have listened to it hundreds of times. It seems to be better than vol. 2. Worth the wait.

I've been listening to Summer Fruits at regular intervals for nearly twelve years, and it doesn't get old. The counterpoint is very clever, and the melodies infectious without being cloying or otherwise irritating. (You don't mind the inevitability of their swimming around in your head for a few hours after each listen.) I seem to recall that the Penguin guys describe the record as "blokish," and that's just the right term: these blokes (two female) -- both the 19-piece "Delightful Precipice" (which plays on 7 tracks) and the 4-piece "Human Chain" (which plays on 4) -- convey such a likeably enthusiastic attitude that you can't quite believe it when, listening hard, you notice the incredible complexity of the compositions.
