Fresh off his Broadway stint in The Pajama Game, Harry Connick went back to his New Orleans roots and recorded a pair of albums in tribute to his hometown. Released the same day as the similarly themed but mostly instrumental Chanson du Vieux Carré, Oh, My Nola is a loose, effortlessly swinging album that ranks among Connick's best. He traces New Orleans' prodigious musical legacy with well-chosen covers peppered with some originals. Though he wrote only four tracks, at least one of them, "All These People," is a stand-out--a mid-tempo elegy about the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, with a strong contribution from gospel great Kim Burrell. When it comes to the covers, Connick chose tracks that either originated in New Orleans or found particular resonance there. The funky, exuberant take on Allen Toussaint's classic "Working in a Coal Mine" that opens the CD reflects the flavor of things to come, but even more fun are the seemingly left-field picks--you'll never think of "Hello Dolly" the same way after listening to the version found here. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

3 out of 5 stars A little disappointed.......2007-07-17

Not as upbeat and sassy as many of his other discs, but still worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars His Best Yet.......2007-07-15

I love every track on this this CD. I admit to trepidation upon hearing his version of "Jambalaya" but I think I prefer his version.

One of the best songs on the track, IMHO, is "Elijah Rocks", a song I'd never heard before. Usually repeat this one before gpoing on to the next tune.

His versions of "Bill Bailey" & "Hello Dolly" are equally excellent. They don't sound like I remember them, they sound better.

Also, he is definitely the star here, but he allows his band mates to have their turn in the spotlight. It isn't all about him.

Knowing the history behind "All These People" makes it even more poignant. Another new fave song of mine.

I esp like the fast upbeat songs, but even slow numbers like "Careless Love" & "We make a Lot of Love" are excellent.

"Yes We Can" is another one I remembered well by the Pointer Sisters. The message is esp. timely today & I love his version of it.

To be honest, I didn't find a bad song on the entire CD & I think this is his best work yet.

5 out of 5 stars My oh my, We make a lot of Love! This is the BEST! .......2007-07-11

I cannot stop playing: We Make A lot of Love, Someday, Sheik of Araby, Elijah Rock, Something You Got, never a dull moment on this CD. I am long time fan and I love this. Great arrangements, great band. He is in excellent voice and his chops on the piano! This is what makes me buy his stuff on sight. Thanks to very interesting liner notes which gives the listener insight to each track. It's funky, jazzy, bluesy and all together soulful. Check out his very interesting duet with gospel artist, Kim Burrell!

5 out of 5 stars Makes me remember why I love Harry!.......2007-07-10

I haven't bought a new Harry Connick Jr. cd in a while. I saw this one looking up at me in a store and I just had to have it. I popped it in to play as soon as I reached the car. I was blown away by this cd. The rhythm and soulful singing really spoke to me. Absolutely wonderful music!

I am great big HCJ fan, have been since "We Are In Love". But this is by far my favourite. I hope they come for a tour in Malaysia again, saw them in 2005, it was a wonderful experience.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-07-19

This is a great cd if you like true southern rock. Great group of members in the band. Just a great cd to own.

5 out of 5 stars DUDE..............2007-06-10

Where did this album come from? Deep in the swamplands of America, five guys originally from New Orleans holed up and created one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Sounding fresh and innovative but still rooted in old Sabbath riffs and swagger, this album detonates your mind and soul.

One part Jack Daniels and one part Reefer Madness, this album absolutely surpasses any expectations you will have. Not fast or intense like Slayer or Pantera, but a different breed of animal. One that crawls into your brain and finds sweet refuge behind the blistering riffs of Pepper and vocal scowls of Phil.

There is nothing else out there that matches this record in terms of riffs, attitude, and mood.

This album is a must have, period.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECTION.......2007-06-08

After buying Bustle in your Hedgerow I bought this CD, MUCH BETTER. Exactly what I wanted to hear from the minute I put it in until it was complete. Amazing music expirence.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Metal Releases EVER!.......2007-04-03

I recently repurchased this album and man, does it take me back. Just listening to it now brings me back to the very drunken days on spring 2002. This album makes me think of the solitary drinking days and nights that I spent being thrashed and suicidal. Most wouldn't consider those types of memories to be particularly invigorating or happy. I do. The reason being is that I can see how much things have gotten better for me since then. This album is both a high and low watermark of my life. Before I turn this into a romance novel, let me say that this album sustained me through some pretty tough times in my early 20s. I'm glad to be alive, sober, and content in 2007 and able to enjoy this album on a different level.

Songs of Particular Mention

"Bury Me In Smoke", "Temptation's Wings", "Underneath Everything", "Stone The Crows"

5 out of 5 stars A simple decision..........2007-02-01

Simply put, if you are a Pantera AND Corrosion Of Conformity fan, you might really want to pick this album up. I am a huge fan of both, and I was FAR from dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Ahh, Florence!!.......2002-10-14

Italian culture during the period from the 14th to the 16th centuries was a whirlwind of developing literature and art, and during this period of history Florence was a political and cultural center to rival Milan or Verona.
I love medieval and renaissance music. They are the "roots" of the great classics centuries later. One does not cultivate a complete education of art by studying only such Masters as Van Gogh, Renoir, Picasso, Dali etc. So it is with fine music.
These CD's contain examples of Florentine musical composition from the 1300's and 1500's. The first CD, performed by David Munrow and the Early Music Consort, covers compositions from the 1300's, with many of the works of Francesco Landini, the most prolific Florentine composer of this period. The second covers music from the 1500's and is performed by John Beckett and the Musica Reservata. Here we can see the early development of both symphonic structure and opera.
Both discs are wonderful examples of different periods in the history of musical development, and performed by different conductors and artists. Therefore a comparison between the two is unfair and misplaced. David Munrow and the Early Music Consort are superb, as I have always found them to be, and John Beckett and the Musica Reservata are equally enjoyable.
If you appreciate early music you will find this recording to be a fantastic addition to your collection, and perhaps the definitive collection of early Italian music. If you are unfamiliar with early music or with Italian Renaissance music then these CD's would be a wonderful introduction.

5 out of 5 stars Best Italian Renaissance disc available........2002-06-28

This re-issue of recordings from the early 70's by the Early Music Consort Of London is,in my opinion, the best recordings of Italian Renaissance works. It is the favorite of my eary music discs, and includes music treasures from 14th and 16th century Florence. Great listening on both discs, and worth the money!

4 out of 5 stars Munrow is magnificent.......2001-11-20

The first disc in this collection is delightful. David Munrow's recorder is a genuine treat. The vocal parts blend well and create a festive atmosphere. The Early Music Consort of London offer a splendid performance. By contrast, the second disc, which features Musica Reservata, is a bit disappointing. Two of the solo voices on disc two are harsh, detracting from an otherwise pleasant recording. They may fairly represent the performing style of sixteenth century Florence, but that is small consolation for the twentieth century ear. Nonetheless, the virtues of the first disc are sufficient to warrant purchasing this collection. Munrow is magnificent.

5 out of 5 stars boccacio would be proud.......2000-04-23

this is a superb recording of early music it is well performed and played. the first cd is all music from the 1300,s and the second is from the 1500,s if you like the kind of music this is the cd to get well worth it.

    4 out of 5 stars A "Regular People" Review.......2007-03-20

So I was on a Renaissance kick for a while and picked this up, first of all, great value. I enjoy listening to a few of these every now and then but can't take too much at once, check out the previews and if you interested, go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Not stilted but powerfully alive.......2005-02-24

My idea of stilted is to sing these madrigals in the phony, glee-club RP style endured for so many years, that made precious, quaint curiosities of them. The Elizabethan pronunciation on this CD is an eye and ear-opener. We may appreciate how much of that speech actually endures in regional accents in both the US and UK. More importantly, this CD brings us the sounds of the long-forgotten English human beings of the Renaissance, people who drank, fought and screwed, who brought us Shakespeare and the King James Bible. I love this recording.

3 out of 5 stars Better at Italian than English.......2003-07-25

A stilted style and even more stilted attempts at Renaissance-English pronunciation make the English Madrigal disk a terrible disappointment. All emotional content -- the mellow, lumimous melancholy with flashes of fire that characterizes English music at its best -- has been drained in this attempt to kill, skin, and stuff these madrigals in order to present them as museum pieces. The pronunciation problem is particularly galling -- if these songs are going to be made incomprehensible to modern English speakers, where, then, is their cultural home?

The Italian pieces are presentable, enjoyable, and sung with delicacy and a fine sense of the artifice of the Italian madrigal. Although this recording can be moving, these pieces are performed more with reverence than with love. These are well worth hearing, but the French ensembles sing these with a bit more feeling. Try, say, Ensemble Clément Janequin.

5 out of 5 stars Only The Wise and Bold Have Trailed.......2006-03-17

I often wondered where so many successful popular musical artists had migrated to. In a existential point of view, most likely, with the coming of age, the well-deserved retirement in some paradisiacal island or country. Professionally, from one gig to another, from one drop to the next to the ultimate, from one assignment/contract to another, from one festival to the next... somewhat a marathon of sameness. Accuradio has definitely widened my scope of knowledge re: music in general, but particularly, en suite, a track of those missing links which comprised my musical taste, built through decades of listening and enjoying. Now, I find a Dave Brubeck conducting his masterpiece with the London Symphony Orchestra and Lalo Schifrin, the Argentinian jazz-fiend and Hollywood score writer in his youth, turned a masterful Symphonic composer, both in their ripe age. It seems to me that a few wise and bold artists with their extraordinarily wider view of their tools of work and true potential, dig in deeply, interweaving instrument sounds to emerge with gems of majestic proportions. Indeed gratifying for composers and music lovers alike.

5 out of 5 stars An underrated master of the guitar........2006-06-24

Yes, It is appropriate to compare Murial to Chet Atkins, who was one of her teachers, as was classical teenage-prodigy Christopher Parkening. Murial Anderson is still the only woman ever to win the (Winfield) National fingerpicking championship, and is a huge supporter of music in the schools with her own foundation.

Perhaps you've never heard her before, or you're trying to get into guitar playing a little bit and aren't sure who you should begin your listening library with--Murial Anderson is a wonderful place to start your guitar music collection because she is a master of so many styles. This is top-notch playing, but it is also exquisitely beautiful guitar music. You could not go wrong with any of her discs, but so far Hometown Live is my favorite.

    5 out of 5 stars A Very Nice Record.......2000-04-29

Muriel Anderson is a truly accomplished player. She is one of only two people ever to win the Winfield Fingerpicking Championship playing nylon string guitar. She is a respected teacher (I think at Belmont College in Nashville) and the boss of those Murial Anderson All-Star Guitar Nights that attract all the best pickers around. I think she is unique because she plays in a style where you usually hear a steel string guitar. It is not unfair to compare her to Chet Atkins. My favorite is "It Never Gets Easier," but she plays the fast stuff as well as the melancholy.

5 out of 5 stars This is a MUST BUY for frottola freaks........2003-01-17

Ms. Rumsey is not a singer AND a musician. (Singers are musicians, thank you.) She is a musician of extreme talent and expertise in singing and playing multiple instruments. She really understands this genre and she is the number one musician who plays and sings frottole simultaneously. Ms Kirkby sings well but does not play an instrument while singing. Mr. O'Dette plays well but does not sing. As a musician who has recorded serveral frottole, I can tell you that what Ms. Rumsey does is not easy, but she makes it sound easy and lovely. Dr. M.G. Ceruiti, mezzosoprano, guitar, mandolin

5 out of 5 stars Just listen to the samples.......2003-01-02

Shirley Rumsey is such a gifted singer and musician. Each piece is so hauntingly beautiful. I find it amazing that someone with this much talent isn't better known. Oh well, if you are tired of the crap that is passing for music these days, just buy this cd and turn off the radio.

      3 out of 5 stars A Good Program.......2002-01-04

The main strength of this recording is the overall program. The selection of pieces, the order in which they are played, and the musical interpretation here make for a good recital. The interpretations I think are a little different than what is typical giving the listener a new perspective on some of these pieces. For example, one usually hears a Dalza Piva as a fairly driving dance piece; but on this recording the Piva is presented as a quietly sweet piece, and it works. Other than some unique, but tasteful interpretation, there is nothing especially outstanding about the performance here, good or bad. There are singers, such as Emma Kirkby, that have given early music vocal performances vastly superior to anything here; and there are lute players running around that can play Ms. Rumsey right into the ground. But this recording, taken as a whole, is enjoyable, bears up well to repeat listening, and is an excellent value.

      5 out of 5 stars A treasure.......2001-09-17

I've listened to a lot of recordings of early Italian music, and this is among the best -- exquisitely played and sung. Rumsey has a gift for making this music both accessible and intimate, which is how it was intended. I can't believe the price is so low.

      5 out of 5 stars SUPERB VALUE.......2001-04-26

This is a beautiful album in all ways - lovely choice of repertoire, songs sung in believable period style with a clear strong voice, vibrant instrumentals. Usually when an artist both sings and plays, one of these elements is weaker. Not so here! If you like Renaissance music, get this - it's well worth its overly-modest price.
