If you are a fan of the late 80's television show Beauty and the Beast, starring Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman, then this CD is for you. It has music and poetry from the show, with the poerty being read by "Vincent" with his wonderful voice. Some of the poetry is from William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, George Gordon, Lord Byron, Robert Frost to name a few. It has Catherine & Vincent's love song with lyrics, which I just heard for the first time when I got this CD and it brought tears to my eyes. I absolutely love this CD and think you will too! Beautiful Touching music, poetry.......2007-04-19

When I first discovered this CD was for sale, I cried. When I first listened to it-not having any idea what they'd put on here from the show, the most beautiful music started up and then "Vincent" started reading the poetry that he read to Catherine and that made me fall in love with his character -eventually, well, the tears just quietly flowed from my eyes, surprised me! I wasnt aware of crying till the tears flowed from the pure beauty of the sounds from this CD. All these years later, I still treasure and love this CD above all my others, it gives you a sense of peace too and the poems bring understanding of true love. I highly recommend it!! (dont let the flowery sentimental review deter you-I really believe most who love beautiful music will love this).

I mean, seriously....I had to buy the cassette on eBay. Thank Bob they finally rereleased it and on CD. I bought for myself, and friends, they made EXCELLENT and appreciated gifts.

Below Average Beethoven Performances.......2007-03-10

It is unfortunate that they chose Solti's direction for the symphonic pieces in this soundtrack as he is simply one of the worst conductors for Beethoven. His direction is so slow one would think he is leading a funeral procession instead of music inspired by the French Revolution.

Of all old school directors such as Karajan, Toscanini, etc., Solti's performances are simply morbidly slow to the point of killing the grieving attendants with boredom. The cacophony of the oversized orchestra doesn't help either. Solti's interpretations are even too slow for a requiem. You think a regular interpretation of the 7th's second movement is slow? Wait 'til you hear this one; you're going to need a massage you'll be so stiff. The 9th symphony march is supposed to be a brisk revolutionary march calling the citizens to arms and to join the militia marching through a town. With Solti you imagine only a funeral procession coming through the town. In the Fifth the whole orchestra is almost struggling to slow down to match the strings. Karajan's interpretations are not particularly fast either but at least he breathes some life into them and the orchestra. I personally like Toscanini in terms of the old 20th century symphonic conductors and Gardiner's traditional interpretations that are at least at a correct speed and give the listener the impression they are marching off as part of a revolutionary batallion to bring liberty to the oppressed instead of being rolled to the morgue. Beethoven was a revolutionary anti-monarchist and strongly supported the idea of political change. Although Periah is a great pianist for Beethoven's concertos, there are simply better performances by him that fortunately aren't conducted by Solti such as on Sony with Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The same goes for the performances with Axe and Yo-Yo Ma. Gidon Kramer's performance for the Violin Concerto in D is also mediocre at best: there are better violinists out there than Kremer for Beethoven.

This is just not the best CD to get quality performances of Beethoven's works. Overall, Solti's interpretations are simply too sluggish and indecipherable to represent the ideals of Beethoven's music. Solti would definitely be my last choice for anything. You won't lose anything by not buying this soundtrack that's for sure: Solti's interpretations are so slow they will simply fossilize you.

Immortal beloved film.......2007-02-06

having watched a recording of Immortal beloved for a number of years the tape was past its best. now that i have the chance of ordering on line i did , and a good move it was. It was nice to see the film and things so clear, i had not see before, the writing on the love letter at the begining and tears that was shed. Iam very pleased with the dvd.

This is one of the most perfect CDs I own, it's one I come back to time and time again. The recording quality is excellent - even on the cassette, which I've finally replaced after 12 years - but even better, the musical interpretation is splendid. Anyone who thinks that classical music is no longer relevant in our culture needs to buy this CD.

A wonderful tribute to the artist.......2005-05-25

This CD is perfect in my opinion. The recording is perfect, the pitch is perfect, the tempo is perfect, and the track selections are perfect. I think the album samples Beethoven's most remarkable pieces of work from his early years to his death. I have heard many recordings of the Ninth symphony that was just executed poorly; which is a shame because it is such a powerful piece. However, this album does it superbly. Sir Georg Solti and Murray Perahia did an amazing job with this album.

The album just flows really well from one piece to the next evoking a vast array of emotions along the way. Beethoven is timeless and forever will be. There is no comparison even to this day. This a wonderful tribute to the artist.

Very emotional and moving!!.......2005-05-23

I am a big fan of classical music. Beethoven, in my opinion, was one of the best composers, Mozart 1st, Beethoven 2nd, etc. This album is very moving and filled with emotion. I am currently listening to Adagio Cantabile-from Piano Sonata No. 8-from the film album. This piece is so moving and emotional. Another piece was Moonlight Sonata which I especially liked. Beethoven loads this piece with love and emotion for his one true love. In my opinion, Beethoven was the best at writing emotional and moving music. Whenever I listen to his music, I am immersed in a world of emotion and feeling. His music is truly beautiful. Back to the album, Sir Georg Solti really captured Beethoven's genius and devotion to his music in this album. This album really accents the film. You cannot have one, you must have both the film and the soundtrack. This is a must have for classical music/Beethoven fanatics and people who want to get a great summary of Beethoven's genius. BUY THIS!!!!

Frost first came to see the light of day when Jem Godfrey - musician, songwriter and producer - founded the band in September 2004. The Brit already made a name for himself in the world of pop music on his collaboration with Ronan Keating and Atomic Kitten as songwriter and producer. That is what Jem Godfrey says about Frost and their debut album Milliontown: "I've always been into progressive rock music and so I decided to do exactly that, writing an album to my kind of taste". At the recording sessions, he was supported by John Mitchell (KINO, Arena, The Urbane) and two members of the band IQ, John Jowitt and Andy Edwards, as well as studio musician John Boyes. Out came a varied piece of work with all sorts of facets: gripping song structures, refined vocal arrangements and virtuoso instrumental passages. Milliontown blends shorter catchy tracks with brilliant long ones, of which the longest provides a listening pleasure of almost 30 minutes. It becomes obvious that Jem Godfrey knows his stuff from what he learned in the field of pop music. His tracks are always to the point and they never get lost in endless repetitions and gaudiness.

Fantastic... Just amazing. A MUST for any thinking music lover.......2007-07-21

I listen to it all. From metal, to classical, to serious progressive and everything in between. These guys are all playing at their best here. Jem Godfrey's writing and amazing keyboards just creates the most amazing moods and environments. And the perfect drumming, bass and guitars from our friends from IQ and Arena just brings it all to perfection.

The soundscapes are much broader than most bands I've been listening too, no shredding (thankfully), and terrific vocals. The high attack percussion-keyboard passages just get me sweaty, and the spacious vocals make it easy to keep listening over and over again.

These guys got too busy to make another record, but then they came to their senses, Jem got back to writing, and we should have another Frost* album sometime this year I hope.

They may be the freshest breath into modern complex music that I've heard in a while. Has the same wondrous and fresh feel as early Ambrosia, and some of the more traditional Pendragon, as well as hints of Arena and Threshold.

You Gotta Here It.......2007-07-21

With so much progressive rock that is really retrogressive (which is not necessarily bad)this band has a refreshing twist. I have certain bands I would consider modern progressive (I Mother Earth, Oceansize, and ____) but Frost does go beyond 70's bands like Yes, Kansas and Crack The Sky (who I love) to add a different sound. If the goal was to have a listenable progressive rock with a slice of pop, they hit the goal, but it goes beyond that. If there were a retrogressive 80's genre, this might fit that sound--1980's Rush fans will love it. I won't dissect every song, just listen and you'll love it. Black Light Machine is one of the best songs I've heard in quite a long time. It's got mood, great vocals, musicianship and it rocks! Buy this CD!

Is this the quintessential Neo-prog album?............2007-05-23

I don't what it is about this album that makes it so good. It must be that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. It is like a distillation of what makes great Neo-prog - inventive use of time signatures and tempo, intricate interplay of instruments, lyrics that are about more than just sex, drugs and girlfriends, and the understanding that the song is more important than your 15 minute solo (something that was unfortunately lost on some of the original prog bands). Milliontown packages all this in a fantastically well-produced album.

REALLY good ProgRock that is worth the $$!!.......2007-04-24

Many of the prog-rock/prog-metal CDs that people recommend on their lists make me wonder what these people have been smoking!!!! I often seek out used copies of these CDs based on fellow reviewers recommendations only to discover that I have wasted my hard earned $$ and, in far too many cases, my time as well.

Apparently some of you are so hard up for progressive music that you will fall for any old stuff that comes along, as long as it even remotely falls under the prog-rock banner!!! And some of this stuff......how could ANYONE compare it to masters like Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Marillion, Rush, etc, etc!!

Well...I am very happy to say that this is a GREAT album and IS worthy of being on such lists!!! Unlike a few of the other CDs I recently purchased, I WILL be listening to this one and quite often. In fact, #1- "Hyperventilate" and #4 - "The Other Me" are already on my MP3 player!!

I heartily recommend this to anyone who is a fan of good progressive rock music!!! Now...if they'd only come out with a new release and go on the road opening for Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree or Rush, I would be a happy man!!! : )

Celtic Frost - 'To Mega Therion' (Sanctuary).......2007-02-21

Originally released in 1985, this was the band's follow-up to their head-banging debut 'Morbid Tales' (see my review) and about as intense. Tunes I liked best were "Jewel Throne", the kick-in-the-BE-hind "Eternal Summer", "Circle Of Tyrants" and the hyperactive "Necromantical Screams". Basically, just more old school prime Swiss death metal to torment you neighbors with. Turn this baby to '10' ! The only way to go.

Celtic Frost-Innovators of Death Metal.......2006-08-09

Celtic Frost is a huge influence on most death metal bands today. From Anthrax to Dave Grohl they have been cited as "gods of metal", ushers of black (in the genre of Venom) and death metal. I fisrt heard these guys back in the early 90's, a little late, and after their prime. My fisrt exposure was into the pandemonium, nice start, with a few odd twists. Cold Lake was my next view, and I thought, where are these guys going, and are they supposed to be Metal? Then I heard this album...THIS IS CELTIC FROST. This is what I was told in Legend about.

Born from Hellhammer member Thomas "Warrior" Fischer, Martin Ain, and Stephen Priestly. They first debuted some material on the "Death Metal" compilation for Noise records, and soon released Morbid Tales in 1984. From their debut album Morbid Tales, this was the second album (1985 release) and an awsome follow up that set the standards high for this up and coming band from Swiss/German origins.

From the first song Innocense and Wrath set up a longstading good/evil play that Frost used for many of their albums. Other highlights include Eternal Summer, The Usurper, and Circle of the Tyrants.

If you are a metal fan and have not bought any Frost before, this is a good second choice album. Morbid Tales is the top pick, but you will not be disapointed with this one either.

It is good to see that they are still kicking and alive today, check out their new album Monotheist as well.

THEE death metal album of the 80's.......2006-07-29

This album ushered in the NEW, more cohesive Celtic Frost sound (circa 1985). Nearly gone are the fast, hard-core influenced songs like "Into the Crypts of Rays" and "Morbid Tales." After the 'Emperor's Return' recording sessions, the band briefly toured, lost their bass player Martin Ain, and headed back into the studio to record the DARKEST, most GOTHIC, EVIL, SLOW-PACED deat metal album ever put on wax. Every song on this disc is terrific. The sound is still ahead of it's time, and it sounds like TG Warrior is playing 8 guitars at once. Mixed into the album are three tracks from the "Tragic Serenades" recording sessions ('86), where Martin Ain joins back up with the band and they re-do a few of the songs.

The ONLY negative I can say about the CD is that Ain only plays bass on the 'Tragic Serenades' tracks: "The Usurper," "Jewel Throne" and "Return to The Eve." He is such an important part of the band--lyrically and musically. In fact, this is the only CF album I would advise buying that he doesn't play on.

Highlights? ALL OF THEM! To point at a few stand outs though: "The Usurper" (they used to open with this song in concert back in the late 80's...probably their best song), "Circle of the Tyrants" (another CF classic), "Eternal Summer," "Necromantical Screams" (which made the set list on their current 06-07 tour) and of course "Jewel Throne."

Taking the terror a step further, Frost has included a couple of chilling, evil instrumentals again, but also they are starting to incorporate string orchestra instruments, tympanies and female backing vocals, all of which are gothic influences, and all of which make the songs that much scarier. It's not contrived, or "just for show," like King Diamond. It's very integral, and the lyrics prove they are intellegent and well researched. They take this all to a new level on their next album, "Into the Pandemonium," which in my opinion is the best metal album of all time.

OOOHHH!!! HEY!!! THIS BAD BOY ROCKS!.......2006-07-14

At the risk of exaggeration, the first things that come to mind when I think of To Mega Therion is "unique" and "ahead of its time," and I'm not a huge Celtic Frost fan either. This band definitely has a sound of their own, as everyone has difficulty categorizing them. This album in particular contains elements of thrash, death metal, black metal, symphonic metal, doom, gothic, etc., you get the point. The incorporation of tympani, horns and female backing vocals is especially fascinating, as heard on "Innocence and Wrath," "Dawn of Meggido" and "Necromanic Screams." Of course, the album is dominated by straightforward rockers like "The Usurper," "Jewel Throne" and the classic "Circle of The Tyrants" (covered by everyone and their grandmother); but then it comes around to something really off the wall, such as the atonal instrumental "Tears in A Prophets Dream," a piece that sounds as if it could have been composed by Stockhausen or anyone else of the European Avant-Garde. Tom Warrior is not the greatest lead guitarist in the world; this album (as well as other Frost efforts) would have greatly benefited from a quality soloist. Nevertheless, what he lacks in technique he more than compensates for in awesome guitar riffs. And as a vocalist, I feel his voice is one of the most commanding in all of the extreme metal community. To Mega Therion is a metal masterpiece that successfully integrates dark, headbanging grooves with progressive experimentation. Best songs: "The Usurper," "Jewel Throne," "Circle of The Tyrants" and "Necromanical Screams."

A great album that influenced many bands. I can think of a few bands that covered songs from this album... Opeth, Mayhem, Marduk... like any of those bands or hate them, I just thought it would be cool to point out how influential this album really is.

This is where it all started..........2006-11-27

Everyone from Napalm Death to Darkthrone to Goatwhore nabbed riffs from this masterpiece, and as a result we're all better off. Despite Tom G's bizzare (if charming and aggressive) vocals, this album remains as timeless and punishing as the day it was first pressed to vinyl as a 6-song MLP. The more time I spend talking about this album, the less time is spent listening to it, so I'm going to end this now and turn on Morbid Tales!

Top Ten deserted on an island metal album.......2006-08-25

I remember this vinyl vividly popping, rumbling, loud through the speakers to 'Human (Intro)' to 'Into the Crypts of Rays'.
Holy crap....
My friend and I bought every metal album we thought looked good back in '84.
The big 4? Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax...
This was #5 for me.
Celtic Frost.
Most songs to love, some to hate.
As it is with any Frost record.
The noise 'songs' like Danse Macabre suck, push skip.
Dethroned Emperor, beautiful.
Just like the rest of this album.
It's raw, real, classic and just damn good.
5 stars because it's a personal Top 10 Album.
If you like metal...
Buy it, worship it.

Extremely influential extreme metal classic.......2006-06-29

In 1984 while much of the world was headbanging to the likes of Ride the Lightning, Powerslave, and even stuff like Quiet Riot there were a smaller group of people getting into the much more evil Celtic Frost. This along with the CF precursor band Hellhammer, Mercyful Fate, and Bathory were laying down the foundation for black metal and the other extreme metal styles that were still coming into being. In 1984 all three of these bands made influential and groundbreaking releases. What really sets this one in particular apart was CF's ultimate guitar tone from Hell, their doomy/sludgy/thrashy riffs were unlike any other. Tom G Warrior's (isn't such a cool stage name?) voice was also quite unique, his deeper more guttural voice coupled with his heavy accent adds an evil touch to the songs that no one else really had at the time. Quorthon and King Diamond had much higher pitched vocals yet still unrelentingly evil as well.

As for the actual songs, they're filled with occult themes and those proto-doom/thrash/black metal riffs. If speed's what you're looking for check out the opener "Into the Crypts of Rays", the title track, and Nocturnal Fear leave you headbanging into rigor mortis. If you're looking for doom and gloom we have that too! Listen to Visions of Mortality and Procreation of the Wicked. There's even more midpaced songs like Return of the Eve and Dethroned Emperor to satisfy all your cravings. WAIT A SEC! This album also contains perhaps the creepiest soundscape ever in Danse Macabre, I'm not even going to bother describing it you just have to hear it to believe it, words couldn't do justice. Yes it's true these three guys might not be the most talented "technically proficient" (that phrase is overused) guys in the biz but they still managed to churn out a f*cking classic. This is just another reason technicality is sometimes overrated if you ask me. I know this is a big hit with the older group of metal fans and with damn good reason too, and with people like me spreading the good word it should be liked and appreciated by my generation as well.

Of this CD's twenty-eight tracks, eighteen are arrangements by Kevin Siegfried; the remaining ten are straightforward, unadorned performances of Shaker hymns, sung either by the choir in unison, or by a solo voice, as they would have been sung in Shaker services. Occasionally the choir stomps and claps, also as the Shakers would have done. The unison songs and Kevin's settings blend seamlessly together, since Kevin's music is very sensitive to the spirit of the original tunes. His harmonies have an open, rough-hewn quality to them, like early American furniture, sturdy and useful. The music carefully mirrors and supports the text, occasionally employing mixed meter to follow the natural cadences of speech. The settings are largely homophonic, like Lutheran chorales, rendering the text easily comprehensible. Kevin avoids unnecessary embellishments and repetitions, and each piece is a small, well-proportioned gem, averaging about two minutes in length. In the liner notes, Kevin writes of his desire to preserve the Shaker ideals of "beauty, simplicity, and utility" in his settings, and he has succeeded brilliantly; the music is unassuming, serene, and peaceful.

Words and Music Marry in Siegfried's Arrangements.......2001-06-27

This recording of Shaker Hymns arranged by composer Kevin Siegfried and sung by the very fine Tudor Choir of Seattle is magnificent for several reasons chief of which is the careful blending of text and music in the arrangements. The "gentle words" of these hymns come alive through Siegfried's thoughtful soundscapes, providing the right context for the message of these poignant and life affirming hymns. This is no small task and although the Tudor Choir sings beautifully throughout, it is the arranging that has really caught my ear on this cd; you'd be hard pressed to find a recording of choral works with a better marriage of text and music. Well worth your money, time, and ears.

More than just a good listen... it stir the soul! .......2007-05-31

Soon as you put the CD on, you are transported to another time... another place. The music sooths, as the words spoken by the beast penetrate to the deepest part of your soul. You're emotionally spent, yet feel more alive than ever after your journey.

I bought this years ago when it first came out on Cassette (gives you an idea how long ago that was) I listened to it so many times the tape wore out. I just ordered the CD.... I can't wait for the journey to begin again...thank you Vincent!

I Loved this Show and this Album.......2006-06-09

I bought the CD today as a backup in case my original signed by Ron Perlman CD wears out. I keep waiting for the owners of this series to release at least the first 2 season on DVD. I have no interest in owning the 3rd season when the show broke my heart. I wish someone would redo this show in it's original conception as a movie or a TV series. I loved the show and was a great fan of the Love and Hope shown by Catherine and Vincent.

Hi! I bought "Of Love & Hope" last November, through Amazon.com, and I must say, I enjoy it! However; the producers of this album, which I love, should have used another introduction instead of just the MUSIC. Why not use the main theme, where Vincent and Catherine introduce each other? THAT would have been great!! After all, Cathy was also a great character on the show!

I hereby recommend this album to all Beauty and the Beast fans out there. I have listened to it so often, that now, I can recite more poems by heart! BATB FOREVER!

Lushly Romantic!.......2005-09-04

I was a great fan of the TV series, "Beauty and the Beast" and owned the cassette version of "Of Love and Hope" in which Ron Purlman as Vincent reads poetry by Shakespeare, Lord Byron, Shelly, Rilke and other greats, interspersed with beautiful music, mostly from the soundtrack of the series. As I love beautiful music and beautiful words, I counted this tape among my treasures. When the tape eventually became damaged, I truly was distraught. I am delighted to now own the CD, which brought me instant pleasure which can only continue for the rest of my life.

Moves me to tears..........2005-07-06

I actually have this on cassette, bought years ago before television network executives butchered this incredibly beautiful show, and dug it out of storage recently. Interestingly enough, I found that I had forgotten none of it. Never has music spoken so eloquently to my heart, nor represented a television show so clearly and wonderfully. Ron Perlman's "Vincent" voice, interpreting the classical literary selections in this, is sensual, articulate, undeniably romantic. It's one of the most unusual collections of music and poetry I've ever come across, a fitting and fine representation of the show.
My favorite is the opening theme of the series, with lyrics sung and "Vincent's" "No one, not even the rain, has such small hands" intonation.
The television show and it's tragic, other-worldly love story was too perfect to last long on tv. I'm glad that fans such as myself have been able to hold onto rememberances of the show such as this marvelous, sweeping score. I only wish that it could be re-released on Cd, along with dvds of the series. Fans have been keeping the magic alive all these years; it's time we were recognized.

Monotheist : "Boring And Unlistenable".......2007-08-05

Beware Old School Frost Fans : Monotheist is not a return at all, it's a complete pile of garbage. It's slow as hell, the music never goes anywhere, and in my opinion they no longer sound like the same band anymore. I was eagerly awaiting this release, and at the time I was expecting something huge from these guys. But honestly, this pile ranks right up there with Metallica's "St. Anger" on my all time worthless listen list...

Is Dark, Evil, A CELTIC FROST Masterpiece.......2007-03-06

Oh God Why Are You Forsaken Me?
The long awaited returned from Celtic Frost fullfilled all the expectations.

This release is dark and evil, the first song "Progeny" has elements of the old CF with new elements like downtuned riffs and is followed by "Ground", another great song with the chorus "Oh God Why Are You Forsaken Me?" that thou will repeat all day long...
"Os abysmi vel daath" is the most deep song in this release, with its changes it takes thee to thy darkest inwards, the vocals are dark and the riffs go to the bone, "I deny my own desire".

The trilogy at the end "Triptych" is the darkest part of this release, 1."Totengott" mixes a dark atmosphere sound with growls, screams and other voice sounds that at some point thou feel Satan's presence next to thee... the next part 2."Synagoga Satanae" is an epic +14 min that takes thee to a dark and evil trip, if it is possible to listen to it with headphones thou will enjoy a lot the song with all the instruments and voice arrangements.. the end 3."Winter" is an instumental song that calm down thy nerves after so much dark excitement.

Finally, I recommend to listen for the first time the complete CD following the lyrics and the notes for every song... this CD is a concept album just see the pictures and the package and you'll understand.

P.S. Please don't compare Celtic Frost with new bands, remember that they began with the dark music style, they went beyond Venom... so give a chance.

I dont get why people are so torn between this release. Its dark, catchy, and a return to form. What more could you ask for? Its got some of Tom Warriors best vocals, the guitars and bass are solid, and the drums really help emphasize some of the albums more straight-forward "black and roll" tracks. Overall, I still think To Megatherion is there best, but this is definately not far beyond.

Fans of early black metal like Bathory, Hellhammer, and even Venom should check this out. Out of all of the black metal albums to be released in the past few years, this is by far my favorite.

I'm an old fan. I witnessed Celtic Frost live in 1986; "Into the Pandemonium" is one of my all time favorite records. Unfortunately, every time I think "Monotheist" has me, it stumbles. Not a bad addition to the CF legacy....but they have done better.

Why bother to keep the name Celtic Frost?.......2007-01-07

This music is so unlike the Celtic Frost I remember (I stopped getting their albums at Into the Pandemonium). This music really just sounds like modern metal today. Overall, I am very disappointed. I like the first song and one other, and the rest are totally generic. It's a very weak album.

Best CD Ever!!!!.......2007-07-08

This is the best CD I have ever heard. I am a clarinetist and know how hard these songs really are. He somehow manages to play the easy and difficult sections with outstanding ease, and beautiful tone. His unmatched performances of both the Mozart Clarinet Concerto and Quintet sport the best intonation and interpretation of any, while leaving the listener awestruck and amazed. This is my favorite CD, I only wish that he played the Quintet on a basset clarinet also.
