5 out of 5 stars The Best of..... Joan Jett.......2007-07-01

Good compilation. Every Jett hit on one CD. And I particularly like the addition of "World of Denial", from the 'pure and simple' Japanese IMPORT CD. Now what about "Here To Stay" and "Hostility"?

4 out of 5 stars Why we all love Rock and Roll.......2007-06-04

Now that Joan Jett is getting her due as a seminal rock and roll influence, it's about time a decent hits set appeared. Sadly, this isn't it. While the music on "Fit To Be Tied" certainly merits the four star rating, I am going to have to assume contractual issues with CBS forced Jett to either omit or substitute alternative versions of well-known songs.

For instance, her huge hit "I Hate Myself For Loving You" is an alternate take from the "Up Your Alley" version, and "Little Liar" is a live version. I am not sure how many versions of "Roadrunner" Joan has recorded so far, but the take here is previously unreleased and kicks butt. So does the new recording of the signature Runaways song, "Cherry Bomb." MIA are such well known Jett tunes as "Good Music" and her version of "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap." The albums she recorded for Warner Brothers are bypassed entirely.

Nonetheless, you still get some of the great proto-grrll rock from "Bad Reputation" to the terrific new "World of Denial." Joan Jett also was queen of the perfect cover choice, as her hit versions of "Everyday People," "Crimson and Clover" and - of course - "I Love Rock and Roll" prove. She also had that glam bam done like few before or since. The BOOM/whack/BOOM/whack that explodes from her cover of Gary Glitter's "Do You Wanna Touch" and her own "I Hate Myself For Loving You" made both songs burst from whatever radio played them some eight years apart. You'd be hard pressed to know that much time had passed between these songs...which proves that Joan Jett is a timeless artist.

But she deserves better. There is a good Japanese compilation that covers all the albums up to "Naked" (which eventually formed the base of "Sinner"), called "Jett Rock: Greatest Hits of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts." It boasts a pretty hefty price tag, so if you're just a casual fan looking for "I Love Rock and Roll," this will do. If not, hit that link.

4 out of 5 stars Joan Jett.......2007-05-25

This is a great disc. It includes songs I didn't even know she did along with cool cover tunes. It's all good!

3 out of 5 stars not a masterpiece.......2007-04-06

There are many songs missing to be a definitive collection, so, to me, it's not definitive. It is good that they added the 'hit' versions of LITTLE LIAR & I HATE MYSELF FOR LOVING YOU instead of the inferior versions that were on the 1997 edition of this cd. They also changed the cover. I guess a raven-haired Jett is more sell0able than a buzzed/peroxided Jett?

3 out of 5 stars I love Joan Jett.......2007-04-02

And this does have all her greatest hits, from Cherry Bomb to I Love Rock'n'Roll.
My complaint, though, and it's a big one, is that it won't play in my computer. I know artists have a problem with people illegally downloading music, etc. But it's a real pain when you actually pay money for a cd and then can't listen to it wherever you want to. I should be able to play this at my desk and I can not. It's irritating to no end. I wish these cds had warning labels so I'd know not to bother with them.

It's only recently that Joan Jett has received her due as a seminal figure, an uncompromising female rocker whose first allegiance is to rock & roll rather than feminist dogma. First as the spiritual center of ahead-of-their-time teen femme-rockers The Runaways' and subsequently on her own, Jett has stayed true to her no-nonsense muse, and in the process has become an essential role model for a new generation of female musicians. This 15-song best-of contains such essential slabs of Jett-powered rock as "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," "Bad Reputation," "I Hate Myself for Loving You," "Do You Wanna Touch Me? (Oh Yeah!)," and her reworking of her old Runaways anthem "Cherry Bomb." --Scott Schinder

4 out of 5 stars Essential Joan Jett. But could've been longer........2006-10-12

Joan Jett still remains one of the sexiest and most original women in the wide world of rock.

While he career has had it's fair share of ups and downs, this collection of music shows how electrifying this woman can be when she's "on".

My only gripe is that the CD itself is only a little over 47 minutes long. They could've filled out the rest of the CD with album cuts, but as a greatest hits CD, it does what it's supposed to do. But I've got to knock off a star as it really bugs me when I buy a greatest hits CD and it's not coming close to being 80 minutes long in some way.

Plus, the sound is remastered to crystal clear clarity. To the best of my knowledge, her back catalog has still yet to be remastered in any form. So people wanting a great sampler of the sexy Joan Jett that covers all of the bases in a quick amount of time, this CD comes highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars It rocks.......2005-08-15

Tonight we have, nostalgically speaking, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and she can rock. I love the way she sings "you." She just bites it off. She makes you believe she loves you and hates you just by the way she sings it: "I still dream 'bout JYOU." She of the black boots, chains and the junior high school lyrics, e.g., "Fake Friends - you don't lose nothin when you lose fake friends." (Listen closely to the lyrics and you will hear the SAT word, "sycophants.")

This album has most of her big hits including "I Love Rock and Roll" with the oh so apropos lyric, "I said what's your name? He said it doesn't matter, cause it's all the same...He musta been about seventeen...and he was with me, me, yeah ME!"). It also has "That's Why I Hate Myself for Loving You" which is just perfect. "You want in and I want out, and that's what love is all about" is also just right and lyrically interesting.

It doesn't have "I Wanna Be Your Dog" which is pure six-pack rock, or the bland, but kind of interesting, "Ridin' With James Dean": "...Rebel without a cause/You got so much to say...Tell me how you feel/Tell me what you see/Ridin with James Dean." Too bad. But it does have "Hey, little liar, I believe in you" which is sooo cute.

"Hello, Mama, Hello Daddy/Cherry Bomb!"

Some of the songs appeared on the earlier albums, "Album," "Bad Reputation," "I Love Rock and Roll" and "Up Your Alley." All of this seems right since I suspect that her managers thought she had a kind of back street sex appeal similar to the Billy Joel of "Uptown Girl." I think they were right. Joan Jett is the kind of girl who would appeal to the uptown boy from Harvard Yard, I suppose. She is kind of interesting. I recall when she was really big in the eighties that rebelling junior high school girls imitated her slavishly the way their rapacious sisters imitated Madonna. Jett was the spiritual sister, musically-speaking, of bad-girl actress Kristy McNichols. Her fan club (mentioned on the label) is Bad Reputation Nation--"Bad Reputation" is also a lyric from the song, "Victim of Circumstance" (included). The teeny boppers really made her, but she was good anyway, ironic and almost innocent despite the boots and the chains.

"Hey jack it's a fact they're talking in town/I turn my back and you're messing around...I hate myself for loving you/Can't break free from the things that you do." These last two lines pounded out in a Pink Floyd Storm Trooper-rally tempo (as with a megaphone). I can see the fans on their feet, waving their arms.

She's billed on the CD blurb as "the female Chuck Berry" and "the last rock and roll star." The last track is "Love Is All Around," the theme from the Mary Tyler Moore TV show, done up tempo and in a hurry. "Everyday People" is another song on this album that sounds a little like it should have been from a TV sit com.

Joan Jett punches it out, but I thought, she's really just a sweet kid pretending to be bad.

5 out of 5 stars Joan IS the best female rocker out there........2004-11-25

Most people, when they think of Joan Jett will think of the song I Love Rock And Roll. That is a great song, but it's also not her only great song. This greatest hits package prooves it without a doubt. I love all the songs on the cd, especially Make Believe. Whether she's doing fast songs, ballads, or remakes, she's great! Listening to her, you can tell that the girl rocker groups of today like The Donnas were influenced by her music. The remake of the Mary Tyler Moore song is too short. It's only one minute long!! But only Joan Jett could take a theme song like that and turn it into something incredible. I can't wait to search out and get all of Joan's early cds. Her voice is very unique and excellent for this genre of music. I wish she was still on the charts today. She is a very under-rated talent. Those who wrote her off in the 80s as a one-hit wonder are so wrong. The cd is chock full of great songs. This greatest hits cd is an absolute must-have! My one big question is why was Britney Spears allowed to re-do the song I Love Rock And Roll? WHY?! Did Joan give permission? I hope not, and i hope she sues Britney. Then again, with Britney doing that song, it might make younger listeners want to hear the original version, and that would mean a renewed interest in Joan's music. I hope so. The world needs a Joan Jett comeback. Of all the female rockers from the 80s that i can think of, Joan Jett definitely is at the top of my list for someone i'd love to see on the charts again with a new cd. In the meantime, try and find a copy of this greatest hits cd. It's a hidden treasure.

4 out of 5 stars I HATE MYSELF FOR LOVING YOU JOAN!.......2003-10-20

This has to be a long awaited Greatest Hits, the always porky pine hair Joan Jett, has deliver one of the finest cuts of Rock 'N Roll of the 80's, her music and hair faded into history in the 90's, but this album is totally one of the essential for those rockabillies cravers of the hairsprays and neon years of human history, the best singles cuts are included here, even the none charted and totally classic Jett song "Bad Reputation", something must have happen to the music of Joan Jett that made her fall into the oblivion of music, maybe because one thing that join her best to tracks or "most famous ones", I Hate Myself For Loving You and I Love Rock N Roll, is that the first is carbon copy of the last, don't you think, but after all Joan Jett music will stand in time for being enjoyable rock arena anthems!....this greatest hits is an essential for any 80's craver.

If you ever wanted a CD with everything she ever did, this is it. Crank it up and sing loud! She is the original RRiot Girl!

4 out of 5 stars She loves rock & roll........2006-03-13

While this isn't as good as the "Great Hits" import collection, it is very good. Every big hit is here anyway. Included are the essential cuts "I Love Rock & Roll", "Bad Reputation", "Do You Wanna Touch Me? (oh yeah)", and the rockin' "I Hate Myself For Loving You". There's also a good chunk of minor hits and other covers. "Cherry Bomb" was the big song from her old band, and we also get the soundtrack song "Light Of Day", a live "Little Liar", "Crimson And Clover", and the TV theme "Love Is All Around". "Fit To Be Tied" could have easily had another 3 or 5 songs, but it's still a fine collection for those who love Joan Jett and rock & roll.

5 out of 5 stars RUNAWAY CLASSICS.......2005-12-23

JOAN JETT-FIT TO BE TIED-GREAT HITS BY JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS: In the seventies, England had Suzi Quatro to carry the glitter rock torch for the sexier gender; in the eighties, America had Joan Jett. This comprehensive collection of tuff 'n trashy classics features the ex Runaways grrr-tarist/sneerer/singer rippin' a page outta the Gary Glitter big-riff-shout-the-chorus trick book (admittedly, it was a one page book). Raucous remakes of pop cherrystones rule, from Glitter's own DO YOU WANNA TOUCH ME (OH YEAH!) and Tommy James' CRIMSON AND CLOVER (lip-smackin' bubble-glam here) to the Runaways' own almost hit CHERRY BOMB and a supersonic LOVE IS ALL AROUND (as Mary Tyler Moore never envisioned it). Jett's own derrier-kickin' compositions I HATE MYSELF FOR LOVING YOU and BAD REPUTATION sound right at home next to career maker I LOVE ROCK N ROLL (another cover tune), a genre anthem in the league of Kiss' ROCK AND ROLL ALL NITE and Led Zeppelin's ROCK AND ROLL. Forget the leather (if you can); Joan Jett's music literally screams for respect---and she'd better get it, or chances are she'll be kickin' YOUR derrier as well! RATING: FIVE "UNHHHS"

4 out of 5 stars Great Stuff - But Incomplete.......2005-11-10

Most of Joan Jetts best stuff is on this disc and it's great music. What would the early 80's have been without "Bad Reputation", "Fake Friends" and "I Love Rock and Roll"? JJ and the Blackhearts were rock at its core with some bad chick image. I held back one star because there is plenty of blank space left on this disc and with so many excellent tunes to choose from, why couldn't we have more? If you need examples, I would have considered the following: "Nag", "You Don't Know What You've Got", "Bits and Pieces" and maybe "Jezebel". There are some covers included on this compilation but many fun covers were left off, like "Star Star", "Tossin' and Turnin", "Hanky Panky" and "Summertime Blues". I could go on - this disc is too thin and too much meaty stuff was left off. But make no mistake - the tunes that were put on here are great rock and roll!

4 out of 5 stars Joan Jett Rocks the Socks of Pet Rocks.......2005-08-17

Joan Jett is definately an ultimate rocker and this CD has the best of the best. Damn fun. Punk before Punk.

5 out of 5 stars Indie speed metal at its best........2007-01-04

Okay, I'm not sure there's such a genre as "indie speed metal," but if there is such a genre, Aversion fits into it perfectly. This album carries a lot of nostalgia for me, as it reminds me of my freshman year of college (1993-94). If I remember correctly, "Fit to Be Tied" had been released not too long before. A friend of mine had this album on tape (yes, tape), and I borrowed it many, many times. Only a couple of years ago, I managed to find the album on CD.

Each of the songs is memorable and catchy...something that's very uncommon for speed/thrash metal. I agree with Chris Jackson's comment that it sounds somewhat like early Metallica, before Hetfield's voice became generic-sounding. Go get yourself some Aversion!

5 out of 5 stars Aversion.......2007-01-02

I first ran into this cd at a used music store, that will remain nameless so as to avoid lawsuits and such, while i was browsing the heavy metal section. I was looking for anything that could catch my all-seeing eye. The eye caught a glimpse of the name of this band 'Aversion,' which of course means "a strong feeling of dislike, opposition, repugnance, or antipathy." I thought that this seemed like quite a nice name for a band of the heavy metal variety, and proceeded to buy the cd, entitled 'fit to be tied.' The cover featured a few people hanging from nooses, which may very well be horribly misspelled, although the spelling is not of my concern at this time. I purchased the cd for 8.99 which, after taxes, comes to a grand total of about 9.63. Good price i suppose. I plug the disc into my car sterio and am blown away by the album's suprisingly fantastic opener 'Hung.' The album definately contains an older Metallica feel, in the sense that the singer almost sounds identical to what James Hetfield used to sound like. All of the songs are played somewhere between the speed range of moderate fast to blisteringly fast, and are all equally catchy and mosh-worthy. I am ashamed for not coming across this band earlier, seeing as how they are so awesome and all. My only complaint is a slight lack of solos. There are a few guitar solos, and they display some excellent fingerwork, but the problem is that there are only a few guitar solos. However, this band is excellent, this cd is excellent, low carb french toast is excellent. Whatever's clever. I hope anyone who reads this may decide to buy it. Better yourself, everyone you love, everyone around you, and everyone you've ever accidentally run into in a non-intentional way. Aversion is yumms.
