4 out of 5 stars Good album.......2006-01-11

Just to let people know, the last song on the album, "A Forest", is actually a cover of a song by The Cure from their second album. Overall a great album but I would recommend 'Strange Old Brew' instead.

4 out of 5 stars Let it shine...\m/.......2004-02-13

Ever sence my friend introduced me to Carpathian Forest via there 'Defending the throne of evil' album, I just cant stop listening to then entrasing arrangments of classic black metal, with a twist of progressive and orchestral elements (but these are not overdone). This band is bringing much progression and growth to todays 'real' black metal genre. So if your looking for the most exiting thing in black metal today, look no further than carpathian forest!, this is a great album worth your time. \m/

5 out of 5 stars Leaning towards growth.......2003-12-16

The first time I heard the songs on this cd, I was absolutely blown away. I am a very avid black metal fan and this is like nothing i've heard. Of course, you do have your blast beats now an than like a lot of other black metal but you can tell that this is the album that they start to lean towards growth. Fans of bands such as Burzum, Darkthrone, or even possibly Mortiis (suprisingly, at least I believe) will definetly enjoy this. If you were comparing Burzum albums, you could say it's Daudi Baldrs meets Det Som Engang Var. The last track is especially interesting. It is very atmospheric and is definetly a must listen to. One of the greater albums before Nordavind left.

4 out of 5 stars Low-fi Black Metal: similar to Darkthrone, old Burzum.......2000-04-11

Fans of old Burzum and Darkthrone will like this release from these two eccentrics. There is much Bathory worship to be heard in these tracks and the pricetag for this release is certainly appealing. Carpathian Forest have power & talent, it's just that they aren't bringing anything new to the table with this release (probably because this is some of their older material that they've had sitting on the shelf for a while before deciding to record it). Fans of Darkthrone and old Burzum will love this. I'd recommend the Beherit/Archgoat split, or Samael's _Worship Him_ for some good old school black metal.

4 out of 5 stars Brutal Black Metal.......2000-01-30

This is a raw black metal feast at it's finest. Perfect for a cold/dark/rainy night. It's a shame this band does not receive much press cause they deserve it. In the vein of Dark Throne, but with a catchy type of vibe that makes the songs stick, get it.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Intro to American Art Songs.......2006-04-02

'My Native Land', a collection of 30 pieces sung by mezzo soprano Jennifer Larmore, accompanied on piano by Antoine Palloc is an excellent tutorial in the American art song. As the introduction states, the art song is as much or more at home in America than any other form of 'classical' music. This became quite clear to me the moment I realized that Stephen Foster's songs were as much of the style of Shubert as they were of native American gospel songs.

This makes it especially odd that there are no Stephen Foster songs on this album. I take this to be an effort on the part of the artist and her producers to focus on less familiar material and thereby educate us about Jake Heggie, Lee Hoiby, John Duke, Richard Hundley, Lora Aborn, John Jacob Niles, Robert Abramson and Charles Naginski and thereby concentrating on 20th century composers joining the better known Charles Ives, Samuel Barber, and Aaron Copeland.

Larmone is not my favorite mezzo and, like another reviewer, have found her doing things I did not totally enjoy, but it seems as if the material in this album fits her to a Tee. It makes me wish she would do a Stephen Foster album.

    Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent recording, lots of photos, partial texts........2005-06-09

I defer to the excellent review below, and to that in the December 1997 Gramophone 12/1997. Just a brief note for purchasers that, for reasons not totally justified by copyright concerns, only nine of the thirty sung texts are reproduced in the original Teldec release booklet - and none at all in the Elatus reissue. Generous total timing 74'58.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Songs, Great Artistry.......2000-09-25

In an effort to promote American culture abroad, I purchased this CD as a gift for a European friend. After two weeks of previewing it in my home, I'm keeping it for myself! Simply put, I can't remember the last time I have enjoyed a disc of songs as much as this one. No one is more surprised than me, since in the past I haven't always warmed to Larmore's singing, live or on record. Even here there are times when her vocal idiosyncrasies get in the way of what she wants to do. The lower register often takes on a strangely occluded quality, while some of her high notes slice the air with piercing shrillness. It's a highly accomplished voice that, to my ears, lacks consistent beauty. But to be fair, for much of this disc she sounds perfectly fine: a handsome, pleasingly dark sound, notable for its flexibility and legato.

What earns her five stars, however, is her artistry. She brings an arrestingly broad range of responses to this music. Like the nation that produced them, American songs are highly diverse, drawing from folk, European, religious, and pop idioms, to name just a few. Larmore is in full command of this diversity and alters her tone and delivery to bring each number home. Furthermore, she seems really to have read and thought about the texts. Every word counts. When the music can handle it, she lays it on thick and "acts" her way through the song, such as in Copland's "Ching a Ring" or Heggie's "Barb'ry Allen." But she wisely knows when to to hold back and let the melody carry the point, as in Barber's famous "Sure on this Shining Night" or Ives's "My Native Land." (Many accomplished Lieder singers never learn this lesson.) Once or twice she's a little off target (the first track, unfortunately), but this disc gave me a new respect for her art.

It helps that she's chosen such a fascinating group of songs. The Copland and Barber are well known, and recently Heggie is on everyone's lips, but much of the rest rarely makes it to disc. I particularly liked the gorgeous Aborn numbers, with their wistful sentimentality, and the quirky Duke pieces. Hundley's "Astronomers" is a haunting, unforgettable piece. Her inclusion of three Ives songs reminds us that it's time singers of her caliber returned to his oeuvre. Many of her choices stress different kinds of longing, that most American of emotions, but there's enough of a variety to prevent sameness. She also shines in several "patter songs," delivered with lightning wit. Palloc performs his role admirably.

I enthusiastically recommend this disc. Brava Jennifer!

3 out of 5 stars Five stars for "Through Chasm..." -Full-length not so good.......2002-11-12

This cd contains both Carpathian Forest's first MCD, and their debut full-length album that followed. It's a microcosm of the degeneration of northern black metal as a whole from enchanting music of obscure dark atmosphere to cheap horror show theatrics. It's a shame this band wasn't able to release at least one full-length in their original style, because "Through Chasm, Caves, and Titan Woods" (tacked on to the end of the cd) is a mini-classic, mixing ultra-atmospheric post-Burzum material with chunky, satisfyingly raw Celtic Frost-influenced rockers. Particularly mesmerizing is the last track, with its distant sound, howling vocals, echoing drums, slow tempo, overlayed acoustic strumming, and epic keyboard washes. It's one of the greatest atmospheric black metal songs of all time. Unfortunately, "Black Shining Leather" is comic-book goth s&m porno metal with little to distinguish it musically. It always depresses me when I listen to it, but not in a good black metal way. Rather, while stewing in my boredom, I wonder what this band could have achieved if it had followed up on the promise of "Journey Through the Cold Moors of Svarttjern", instead of turning into a goofball mediocrity.

This CD will rock you to sleep where you will have wicked
dreams. Take a stroll through the Black Metal Carpathian
Forest with only starshine to light your way. Hear them,
the Black Metal children of the night? What music they
make. Nice creepy interludes with references to torturing
genitals. Fans of Darkthrone and Mayhem will enjoy this CD.
