If you're on the fence about whether music from American Idol alumnus Constantine Maroulis is worth your time, consulting the cover art could help. Those who swooned over his dark good looks in 2005 will be swayed again instantly. And in the end, that won't be a bad thing. Constantine, the former contestant's first solo album (fans will note that Pray for the Soul of Betty, a 2005 release, was the work of a band to which Constantine contributed vocals prior to his TV turn) rocks hard, rejects infantile songwriting, and leaves no room for duds--each of its 12 tracks surprises with a maturity you wouldn't necessarily expect from a guy who got his big break on TV. The opening piano plinks of "Girl Like You" give way to a Santana-esque romp, "Everybody Loves" brings out the Freddy Mercury in Maroulis' likable if not overly pliant voice, and "Sister, Sister"--one of a few numbers co-written by Maroulis--steals hearts with a sharp turn away from the predictable; here's a song about sibling love from an artist who some would expect to focus on lusty joints. Constantine's producers play it straight and don't get overly fancy, but that's not to say the disc is without flourishes. This five-track EP is clearly not intended to expand on Get Behind Me Satan, the Stripes' ambitious, ethos-stretching studio album that preceded it by a few months. Instead, the studio cover version and four recent live cuts culled together here seem equal parts roots-retrenchment and chronicle of Jack and Meg White's recent gig grooves. The title studio track (a cover of a standout from Canadian identical twin punk-pop duo Tegan and Sara's '04 "So Jealous" album) has been a fan favorite in recent Stripes set lists, and here Jack White invests it with a familiar, chunky-chorded foundation and equally solid vocal hooks, setting them off with evocative, just-this-side-of-Mars guitar breaks that pay tribute to Brit invasion heroes the Yardbirds. Hailing from June '05 Brazilian shows, the spare, stop/start "Screwdriver" finds Jack warbling in early Robert Plant mode, while his haunting acoustic take of White Blood Cells' "Same Boy I've Always Known" epitomizes much of the Stripes' stripped-down, back-to-the-future appeal. Not bad, but inessential........2007-03-12

If you're new to the White Stripes, don't get this album. Get one of the five LP's, which are all incredible. This is more for people who are already fans of the band. I actually don't care a whole great deal for the cover of Tegan & Sara's hit "Walking with a Ghost," but it's alright. Actually, I liked the live tracks more. Even so, while they are all amazing Stripes songs, it is more like something intended for fans than anything else. I don't really think they're newer releases will be a template from this.

On the other hand, a new album, "Icky Thump" is coming out in awhile. We'll see how that one turns out.

Great Holdover.......2006-03-20

The title track is great and the live cuts are classic White Stripes. Its a great buy to hold over until the next album comes out. See also "Under the Blackpool Lights" DVD.

Walking with the ghost.......2006-03-06

Unsurprisingly, a new White Stripes album is going to overshadow a small live/cover EP like "Walking With A Ghost + 4 Live Tracks." But this little collection is worth checking out anyway,

It opens with a cover of indiepop sisters Tegan & Sara's "Walking With A Ghost," now White-Striped. This version is much hard-rockier and more angular, with jabs of rough guitar and wails from Jack White. Where Tegan and Sara sounded mildly perturbed by their "walking with a ghost," Jack sounds on the edge of breaking down completely. Steady there.

And, this having "+ 4 Live Tracks," we're then treated to some fairly good, low-key renditions of White Stripes tunes: a mellow version of "The Same Boy You've Always Known," where you can hear cheers and handclaps from the audience, the mournful "As Ugly As I Seem."

After the sorrowful pair of songs, we finally get some rockin'. Jack and Meg smash through the tune of "The Denial Twist," with snarly singing and lots of rough drums'n'bass. And after a hearty round of applause from the audience, they launch into the roaring bass of "Screwdriver."

Wedged in the midle of the last song is "Passive Manipulation," a solo where Meg sings, "Women, listen to your mothers/don't succumb to the wishes of your brothers..." Then Jack lets rip for one grand finale, a blast of raw vocals and equally raw instrumentation.

Well, the White Stripes know how to make their odds and ends worth the money -- smashing together a quirky cover with their live performance. While the cover is good -- not as enticing as the original, admittedly -- the live performance is what really rocks.

At first, things don't seem to be too energetic. Jack sounds very depressed, and only acoustic guitar and a few drums break through. But after a couple of very low-key songs, Meg and Jack start giving it their all. The result is absolutely electric -- kinetic music, ripping singing, and to judge from the applause, the audience loved it.

There's a muddy edge to the music, like many live performances, and it's a credit that their musical skills that the White Stripes can make this EP a good addition to any fan's collection. And yes, the cover is nice too.

The live stuff on here is great, I can never hear enough versions of "Screwdriver".

The title track, a cover of a Tegan & Sara song, is great too. It actually served as a springboard for me to check out the original band, of whom I am now a big fan.

The cover song was not what I expected, but then I had never heard the other version until recently. I like the Stripes version better. It's enjoyable.

PJ's Best since Yield.......2007-05-11

This is great to listen to. Love the collection of raritys and career spaning oddballs. If your a PJ fan you'll want this.

Great deal but a little warning.......2006-11-12

It's cool that PJ put all these hard-to-find songs on this album. Overall it's a must for the true PJ fan but I've got one majaor qualm - some of the songs are different recordings from the original B-sides from back in the day.

For example, on "Footsteps" a harmonica track was added - the original B-side didn't have that. It's cool to hear the harmonica and makes it sound different but I really enjoyed the more sparse rendition with just guitar and Eddie's voice.

"Alone" is also a different vesion than the original B-side. This one sounds a bit more raw (which can be good or bad) but it's just not the one I remember so dearly.

Once again, I love this album but just know that some of the songs sound different than the originals.

Lost And Found.......2006-09-22

The fact that these songs weren't considered good enough for any Pearl Jams studio albums says something about how good this band is. This album is a classic in its own right - even if they are just B-sides, any other band would be pleased to release a Greatest Hits album as good as this.
From 'Wash' and "Dirty Frank' from the Ten era to the more recent 'Down' and 'Undone' from Riot Act, all the Pearl Jam songs that you may or may not have missed over the years are here.
You remember them...Yellow Ledbetter, Footsteps, Alone, Last Kiss, Leavin Here, Hard To Imagine, they're all here....
Some of my favourite PJ tracks of all time are on here. Special mention must go to 'Hold On', 'Let Me Sleep', the instrumental 'Brother' and 'Strangest Tribe' which reminds me of 'The Doors - Indian Summer'.
Also listen out for the hidden track at the end of disc 2, which is Eddie's ode to the late Layne Staley of Alice In Chains.

Lost Pearls.......2006-08-08

The dogs are indeed pearls in this rarities and b-sides Pearl Jam album. In a short review, Lost Dogs is the best album that the seattle band realize in many years and have to get a place in the shelf - a special one. There are too many good songs that you will have difficulty in pick one for yourself.
In Lost Dogs the band pass its life through all the 90s, since the early years with Ten and Vs, passing through the void that inspire No Code and Binaural, and finally arriving in the 2000s with the maturity of Riot Act. Essential.

pearl jam golden nugget collection .......2006-06-19

pearl jam have always been known to make really great songs and never put them on offical albums and then they decide to put them on b.sides...which is an shame because some times their singles are hard to get hold of.. well now we've got this to droul over and it's a superb album and the five merits just go to disc 1 alone as i haven't listened to disc two yet and i'll will tonight..as i hear that the song "dirty frank" is an awesome song from the opipions of previous reviewers so if disc two is as good as disc one then i have no other opipion that to state that this is an superb rarities album with all the song writing merits you get from their offical albums maybe even more and some of the "ten" session songs should of featured because they would of fitted perfectly..

as stated above i got round to listen to disc two last night at 111.pm and it really was a magical journey and i know it's an clinched saying but it truly was an beautiful grungy journey through the different evolutions of pearl jam

the disc started off well with the first three songs fatal other side and hard to imagine.. but it was just as "footsteps" started i was incarcerated by the music..this song was an stone gossard song that was left of the ten album..for what reason i don't know

then "wash" "as stated above from the cutting room floor of the ten album..
"dead man" "dead man walking soundtrack" this is an fantastic song.. with eddie vedder playing guitar on his own.
and the song didn't even make the dead man walking soundtrack

the next four songs are from the 1991 fan club christmas single and are all superb.

sweet lew left off the binaural album is an warped sophicated song..one of my favorites

"dirty frank" from the ten peroid it's increbily, in your face and it acts as it protrays

brother[ten era] another song that could of been a major smash hit!!!

now comes to the end and my favorite song of both albums
"bee girl" from the radio broadcast rockline
it's a beautiful intimicy, between jeff ament and eddie vedder
this is one of their all time classics!!!

get the album if you love PJ and what more of the diversity of post ten era

What's Goin' On? Now I'm Only 15 Years Behind the Times!.......2007-01-05

As you can see from some of my other reviews in here, my musical tastes are mired 30-40 years in the past. Recently I jumped ahead to only 15 years behind the times at an unlikely place--the steps of Sacre Cour on Montmartre in Paris. There on a unseasonably mild November Sunday afternoon, I listened to a Parisian troubador strum his guitar and sing Beatles songs and American folk tunes (Simon and Garfunkel). I started singing along and he invited me down to sing with him. First we did "Help!", on which we did our best to reproduce the Beatles echo singing style. After "Help!" he started a song that I didn't recognize, so I sat back down on the concrete steps. "25 years and my life is still..."--I listened and enjoyed, and sang along with the "hey, hey, hey, what's goin' on!" chorus. Later on he invited me back for "California Dreaming" (another echo song), but that's another story.

Back in the US, I was determined to find out who did "What's Goin' On", which I was sure had to be the name of the song. I Googled and searched lyrics sites--finding a lot of performers who had covered Marvin Gaye's classic tune. Finally on page 3 of one search or another, I found a reference to "4 Non Blondes" and a song called "What's Up". I read the lyrics and thought, "This might be it." I found 4 Non Blondes on You Tube and listened (and watched) Linda Perry sing the song. I knew I'd found the song. I also learned that the title of the song resulted from the ubiquitous presence of Marvin Gaye's song, and the need for 4 Non Blondes to be different. I also learned was that Linda Perry did a lot better with the song than my Parisian friend, and I understood why it was a big hit that would be remembered in Paris 15 years later.

Getting on with the story, I asked for 4 Non Blondes' CD "Bigger, Faster, Better, More" for Christmas. Of all people, my 77-year old father found it for me. Sure enough, my new favorite song was there, along with a several other songs featuring Linda Perry's unique vocal style--"Train", "Pleasantly Blue", "Morphine and Chocolate" and "Spaceman" being my favorites. I love the way she can seemingly sing in two octaves at once. "Morphine and Chocolate" has to be the theme song for a drug movie somewhere. Mostly rockers, the 4 Non Blondes also blend in some blues and folk. Linda's singing seems a little strident at time, but you can never accuse of her of holding anything back. I've read comparisons of Perry's singing style to that of Robert Plant--they seem relevant. Both have great range of styles, pitch and that relentless emotion.

poor choice for second single.......2006-11-13

A very underrated record. Following up 'What's Up?" with "Spaceman" was a bad decision. The followup singles should have been "Calling all the people" and "Drifting." If you've always liked "What's Up?" but never heard the whole album, it's worth having.

Interesting, but plenty of filler........2006-09-08

I'll give credit to Linda Perry for having a captivating voice(although she does remind me a lot of Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde), and "What's Up", "Drifting", and "Spaceman" are ballads that I never get tired of. Unfortunately, the rest of the album never really grew on me, and "Dear Mr. President" is the perfect example of a good instrumental song ruined by cliched lyrics. Basically, it's the sound of a band trying to make a statement without having anything to say.

For those of you that liked their one hit, I say try to borrow this before you buy it, and if you hated their one hit, you still might try giving this one a chance because half of the songs follow the same formula as "What's Up" and the other half sound like a different band altogether.

I Love It!!.......2006-03-10

I just heard the song "What's Up!!" on the radio. I had to have it therefore I went directly to Amazon and found the Album. I loved it. All the songs were great and it's a shame that they are no longer together. I listen to this album everyday at work and never get tired of it.

Album Description

When it was first released as a four-LP package in 1972, this marathon live recording hit #3 on Billboard's Pop album chart and was certified RIAA gold. Following up their 1971 album Chicago III, this historic set features all the early hits and spotlights Chicago at the peak of their initial success. Painstakingly remastered, it now includes a full disc of previously unreleased material showcasing their trademark horns, Robert Lamm's keyboards and vocals, and the guitar virtuosity of the late Terry Kath. The set's packaging makes a nod to the original LP release, with an outer cardboard slipcase, four CDs in individual jackets, a 36-page booklet with original LP artwork, and mini-reproductions of the three huge posters that were part of the original release.

Walter Parazaider (sax, woodwinds), Lee Loughnane (trumpet), James Pankow (trombone), Robert Lamm (keyboards, vocals), Terry Kath (guitar, vocals), Danny Seraphine (drums), and Peter Cetera (bass, vocals) formed Chicago in the Second City in 1967. They released their debut album, Chicago Transit Authority, in 1969. The double LP sold more than two million copies on the strength of sweet pop hits and psychedelic rock explorations that appealed to traditional Top 40 fans as well as hipper listeners tuning in to the new free-form FM radio.

This was just the start of Chicago's enduring popularity, which includes five consecutive #1 albums, 21 Top 10 singles, and worldwide sales of over 120 million. Chicago continues to be a major concert draw, their lineup now including Bill Champlin (keyboards, vocals), Jason Scheff (bass, vocals), Keith Howland (guitar), and Tris Imboden (drums), along with founding members Lamm, Parazaider, Loughnane, and Pankow.

carnegie hall just got better with rhino's re-release........2007-08-02

having worn out my fathers original box set,then playing the hell out of my own lp's i was very pleased that rhino got behind the re-release of the long out of print box set. for long time chicago fans who know this album buy it now because it sounds even better then 1971 release.post terry kath fans of the more pop version of this band just won't get it this is long jams evoking the times(mothers of invention,grateful dead etc)i suggest sticking to solo peter cetera albums but for the educated music fans this is a must.all four albums on three c.d.'s plus a bonus disc of alternates and unreleased wow, chicago live at carnegie hall just got better.

Chicago in their early days cranking out jazz/rock inovative music at Carnegie Hall. Terry Kath is sorely missed from the group. His influence on Chicago was essential to their early sound. If you like electric guitar buy this collection.

All of Chicago's indispensable tunes are there and the recording, in the present Rhino transfer, is more than adequate; and, to top it all,the documentation and packaging should be seen as a model by the industry. When I was 13 I had an album collection consisting of Zeppellin, Sabbath, Cooper, Cream, Beethovin, Bach and the brand-new Chicago at Carnegie Hall. I haven't heard this album in 20 years (since my last record player gave up the ghost and I switched to cd's and electronic formats) and my wife surprised me last night with this 4 cd set. WOW! This is how live music should be performed. For those out there who actually LIKE live music to sound just like the studio version this isn't for you. But if you want to hear what a late 60's era hard-working touring band sounded like night after night when mainstream audiences cared about musicianship and composition without the "repairing" of such recordings by later studio work...then this set is an excellent example. This has got to be on anyone's list of top ten live rock albums. I recommend a strong buy!

This fine band's powerful music has been often overshadowed by singer Scott Weiland's well-documented drug and legal troubles. Not to mention that STP's 1992 debut, Core, was dismissed by critics as "Seattle lite." Nonetheless, STP has managed to make four noteworthy albums, No. 4 being the latest in their solid and cohesive body of work. No. 4 is not groundbreaking, but the quartet's aggressive, dynamic hard rock is emotion-packed and timeless. Not as hit-heavy as its predecessors, No. 4 is nevertheless strong and diverse. On the gentler side, there's the lilting '60s-influenced "I Got You" and "Atlanta," which is almost Doors-like in its dreamy mood. Heavier fare includes the midtempo heavy riffing opener "Down" and the winning but not-so-subtly titled "Sex and Violence," which matches an aggressive, linear feel with a cool punk vibe. At 42 minutes, the only thing wrong with No. 4 is that there's not enough of it. --Katherine Turman

Falling Below Par But With Some Quality Tracks!.......2007-06-20

On October 26, 1999, Stone Temple Pilots released their forth studio effort appropriately titled "No. 4." Though the album fell below the band's true potential, the failure in sales was a direct result of the band's inability to promote the album while singer Scott weiland was in drug rehabilitation. Dispite the many obstacles that the band had to endure, they were able to create a handful of some of their best songs to date such as "Down," "Heaven & Hot Rods," and "Sour Girl." "Sour Girl," which was written about Weiland's failing relationship with his then wife, even became one of the band's most popular singles. But all in all, the album as a whole is plagued by poor production and numerous songs that could be considered "fillers." Below, please find the rating for each song individually:

One Of My Favorite CD's Ever.......2007-05-11

With the exception of 'Glide', this is a perfect album to me. From the lyrics to the unusual melodies, the crunching guitars and tight bass/drums combo, this is an album that begs to be played very LOUD! Everything from grunge, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, and The Beatles are represented here in terms of influences and song writing styles, but none of these compositions in any way rip those artists off; STP make them their own, and play the hell out of them. Scott has rarely sounded more at home, and the energy on this album makes it one of the finest STP outings ever. Plus the great production never hurts!! Something most rock and metal fans would appreciate...

When talking to most STP fan's, I notice that this album seems to be one of the least favorites. I have to admit, when I initially listened to it from start to finish, I was a little unsure myself. Knowing what I know now, that was the absolute BEAUTY of the thing. As these guys grew and matured (as well as faced personal hardships and demons) their sound did the same. This album reflects that with an eclectic array of wonderful songs. For all of the hard rockers out there, the album opening "Down" should suffice nicely. For those who love the Beatles, you have "I Got You", which I swear could've easily been on the Fab Four's White Album. "Sour Girl" in my opinion is one of the most hauntingly beautiful numbers ever created by the band. Scott really makes you feel the truth and inspiration behind the song. Track after track there is a different feel, with Scott and the boys doing what they do best--- ROCK OUT. Don't believe the naysayers, this album is a killer, and worthy of all the accolades of their previous efforts.

Lucky number four.......2006-12-29

I think everyone at one point in their lives has liked STP. I have. I still do. This is their most complete work. Way more accessible than some of their earlier jams. They rock it out, they slow it down, and show what they are truly capable of. Definately not locked in grunge mode unlike bands they rivaled back in STP's early days. In the long run, this CD didnt change music like Wicked Garden, but I think it is much better than it.
Without writing a documentary, I really think it is such a shame to see Scott in Velvet Revolver. Pick up what you had brother and run with it!

The Detroit Cobras are the garage band of your dreams. Lock up your young and most impressionable little rock 'n' roll fans, and play this for 'em at full volume. They'll be screaming for more. Book-ended by the booty-shakin' opening of "Cha Cha Twist" and the most rollicking, unrelenting cover of Jackie DeShannon and Irma Thomas' "Breakaway" that you'll ever hear, there's nary a lull and by the time "Midnight Blues" rolls around, all will be right in the world and you'll be loving life again. The grinding, roughhouse guitar is totally primal - imagine the love child of Keith Richards and Link Wray - and Rachel Nagy's smoky snarl will make you think very unangelic thoughts. An American classic, already.

Unbelievabel how one artist could write such wonderful and emotional songs. I hope Schiller visits the states for touring as well.

When I first heard their frontman on a Paul Van Dyk tune I was compelled to look further into this vocalist. Songwriting is weak and melodies are

Best New Band I've heard in awhile.......2007-07-11

Really good stuff, hard to explain the sound, a mix of Cold Play, Snow Patrol, a little bit of Travis. Nearly every track is really good. They have a unique sound that really comes together. Good lyrics, interesting instrumentals and vocals and good replay value. They should have a US version released soon. Now that I think of it they are kind of the British version of Collective Soul- catchy, soulful and simple rockin music.

Great CD!.......2007-05-22

I just received this album and really love it. These guys remind me a little bit like "Flock of Seagulls". The lyrics are fresh and different, any yet somewhat inspiring too. The music is soft and then a simple driving beat.
"Life is Beautiful" is my favorite, but several other cuts are very good. One song sounds similar to the "Life is beautiful song music wise, but that's okay. I hope these guys keep up the good work and I look forward to future compositions.

I love this album! Vega4 is definitely going to make it to the top,right by Snow Patrol! Their music is not only beautiul but so meaningful. They have have great lyrics. I can not stop listening to this album! The whole album is just amazing, but if I had to pick my three favorite songs off the album they would be You and Me, Life is Beautiful and You. If you love Snow Patrol, you will fall in love with Vega4! It is definitely worth a listen!
