By the end of the 1970s, the Dead had modified their nuanced, multifaceted sound and had become much more of a rock & roll band again. What they lost in subtlety, they made up for with aggression. This 1979 show comes from their annual year-end run in Oakland and features recent addition Brent Mydland on keyboards, not to mention a near-metal edge. Jerry Garcia often sounds like Chuck Berry gone mad (well, madder); the band covers three Berry tunes as if to illustrate the point. However, this one was a prototypical "Bobby show," with Garcia struggling at times to keep up with the rest of the band, although he does seem spurred on by Weir in many spots. Raw, angry, and frayed, Volume Five sports the Dead at their roughest. --Marc Greilsamer

More than worth it for the Shakedown.......2006-02-04

No doubt the Dead of the early to mid seventies was the best if you have to chose a show at random and get lost in it. If you have to restrict yourself. After that, the Dead were less consistent. But the Dead with Brent were great too, different and great in other ways. I love that Hammond B-3 sounds, and I love Brent's voice. He could certainly sing better than Donna. In fact, tuning out Donnna from seventies shows can be quite exhausting. Hart's percussion jams also seem to get more interesting in the eighties.

There were two 80's shows early in the Dick's Picks series, volumes five and six. (OK, I just noticed the date, this show preceded the eighties by about five days, but if you had to classify it, for all practical purposes this is early eighties Dead) Both vol. 5 and 6 provide good historical illustrations of what was wrong with the Dead in the 80's as well as what was right with them. Overall, though, Dick's Pick Vol. 5 is the one I would go with. Vol. 6 has a great second disc but overall the band sounds too haggard.

Volume 5 starts off shaky and we realize there will be too many of those R&B numbers that they were so fond of in the 80's. It hurts to say it but, they just don't do those well. C.C. Rider, Around and Around, Promised Land... I don't know why no one in the organization had the courage to tell Bobby he doesn't sound good trying to belt out soulful numbers. Maybe they never went back and listened to their shows. More likely they just didn't care because the fans have demonstrated that they will continue to pay and show up. But lets not dwell on the negatives. Though off to a bit of a weak start, we have a Brown Eyed Women in the first set in which Jerry sounds great, brings you back to the days when he had the energy for thirty-second notes, ripping off high energy, intense sheets of sound. When disc 2 starts, there's a great Uncle John's Band followed by Estimated Prophet. Phil tries to transition them into He's Gone but Jerry is on fire and takes off in a different direction for a five minute or so track labeled "Jam 1." They finally do get back to He's Gone, which then transitions into The Other One with a massive bone-rattling Phil bomb. We get a good drums>space, a couple other tunes, and then the track that alone makes this a worthy purchase, Shakedown Street. There aren't too many official releases of live Shakedowns, but of them this is the best, better than off So Many Roads for sure (the single best Live Shakedown I own is off a bootleg from a 1990 Madison Square Garden show with Branford Marsalis). It's a high energy jam that eventually transitions a little sloppily into an Uncle John's Band reprise.

Overall, a worthy Dick's Pick. There's enough great music that it would be a shame to miss this. Don't overlook the Brent era Dead.

DP #5 is a keeper.......2003-10-24

Generally, I concur with previous reviewers who provide spot on summaries. Why write then, you ask? Well, no one has mentioned Bobby's killer slide on disc one's New Minglewood or the great version of disc one's Brown Eyed Women. Disc one's songs have wonderfully played versions of the songs and one may attribute this to the likely lenghty practice sessions that preceeded this tour as the band got Mydland up to speed.

Disc two especially is just a killer and disc 3 has a great Jam-NFA-Brokedown Palace section. The excitement of the band during disc 2's UJB is simply palable and you will listen drop jawed as you understand that the band knows that the audience knows that they sound great.

Absolutely, Weir and Mydland and the rythym section steal the show. Jerry is starting to show signs of deteriation and does seem at times to be "trying to keep up" as the Amazon reviewer above wrote.

However, as an attendee to several Dead shows in the late 70s one must concur that by the late 70s the Godcheauxs were personas non grata and the addition of Mydland who both sang and played keyboards head and shoulders above his predecessors absolutely re-invigorated the band. You will note from the opening of Cold Rain throughout the jamming on discs two and three that Garcia and the others were thrilled with what the personnel change had wrought. This show will please your ears immensely.

Shakedown to the bone.......2003-09-24

Good first set! Bob really gets it going with C.C. Rider. But, the 2nd set is awesome!!! Really incredible. Shakedown Street really stands out for me on this CD. Especially the last five or six minutes of it....the jam is .......WOW!!!

A solid show, but the highlight is an amazing second disk, that offers one of the most intense Other Ones ever. The second disk is worth the price of the whole set, and is essential for any deadhead.

Here's one for the ages, the type of vibrant show that helped foster the Grateful Dead's reputation as the preeminent live band. To many, the year 1977 marked a peak in the band's history, the point when all of their disparate influences came together to form the most powerful whole, an arresting blend of musicality and sheer force. This show comes from their year-end run at San Francisco's Winterland and it was a fitting conclusion to a triumphant year. Deep into their second decade, the Dead have something to prove here at this particularly intense show. Jerry Garcia's playing is fresh and inventive, the drums fierce, the various cogs in perfect harmony. That's not to say they lost all subtlety: listen how Garcia craftily begins his solo in the lower register on "They Love Each Other," how Bob Weir and Donna Godcheaux harmonize sweetly on "Looks Like Rain," and how the band bring things way down on the fragile ballad "China Doll" only to return to the stratosphere moments later. And Garcia's voice had taken on just a hint of creakiness that made it more expressive than it had ever been. Still, this night will be remembered for the wall-shaking intensity found in spots like the second-set-opening "Bertha"/"Good Lovin'" medley and the crescendo to end the fan-favorite coupling of "China Cat Sunflower" (played this night for the first time in three years) and "I Know You Rider." At the end, they return to their bread-and-butter boogie on "Not Fade Away" before signing off with two encores: a majestic "Terrapin Station" and a rousing "Johnny B. Goode," the latter a telling reminder that they were, after all, just a good old rock & roll band. --Marc Greilsamer

The Grateful Dead for Beginners: A User's Guide.......2007-03-08

This Pick would be the ideal show to select (of the officially released live recordings anyway) to break someone else in to The Dead. To introduce them to the world of the Dead, so to speak. Why? Because while this is one very well played, and at times intense, performance, it is also a very accessible show. It is certainly more "beginner-friendly" than any of the picks from the 73-74 period, or even the easygoing shows of the 70-Euro 72 era.

I'd agree with the previous reviewer's comment that much of the show sounds like a typical first set for the band, in that it was much more song oriented than it was jam oriented (although there are some great jams included, such as the PITB>CHINA CAT>RIDER>CHINA DOLL>PITB and a wonderful Terrapin Station, as well as a beautiful Eyes of the World added from the next night's performance). And The Dead's first sets were notorious for their easy-going vibe resulting from the usually country-rock-blues flavor of the usual first set selections. Most Deadheads considered the first set as the perfect warm-up for what was to come in the dark, spaced out, and even mystical, marathons that comprised the second sets.

But this is still "The Good Ol' Grateful Dead", just a much more rocking and rolling version as by this point, they were very well dialed in to yet another phase/stage of their art and were putting the finishing touches on to perhaps their most magical year, 1977.

The Just Exactly Perfect Brothers, a mainstream Dead.......2005-03-20

Faced with all the rave reviews, I figured I couldn't go wrong -- after all, Bobby opens the show by saying the band is going to "play everything just exactly perfect, on account of our new name is the Just Exactly Perfect Brothers Band." But I have to offer a different take on this one. Yes, it's energetic, but to my ears the magic is missing. It sounds like an AOR mainstream version of the Dead. It's not bad, but it's not what I am seeking in the music of the Dead, not what they are capable of at their best. Even when jamming (and there are no spectacularly long improvised jams here), the whole show sounds like a first set. I haven't heard much '77 Dead, but if this is indicative, I can't join those who say it was of the band's best periods.

Holy Moly!!!!.......2005-02-24

A five star rating would be granted only if I were present, in the flesh, at this incredible '77 show (it was a very good year...). Every performance is epic in an of itself. If there were only one Dead album I had on my shelf, this would have to be the one!!! I've heard some wierd stuff about this show changing people's lives. I can almost buy into it....almost...

Pure power. Seamless transition. A complete musical group-mind. All the pieces were in place a few days after Christmas in 1977, and the Dead were at their home, the Winterland in San Fran.

The rest is history.

In the annals of live Dead shows, this one is truly memorable. From the very first note, everyone is in peak form. Jerry's not stumbling on leads out of the gate, Bob isn't forgetting any words, and it seems even Donna is singing in tune consistently.

But it's the second set re-emergence of "China Cat Sunflower," in the middle of a mind-melting "Playing in the Band" that really cements this as a classic set. They hadn't played "China" in 3 years, and suddenly it emerges. You can hear people in the audience literally freaking out.

Obviously, this album is for Dead freaks like myself, but if you're looking for a totally solid live recording of them, this is a great place to start. Very little pretentiousness, mostly meat and hardly and filler. This is the sound of a rock band that had transformed itself into a psychedelic hurricane, unleashed on the California coast.

Passionate.......2004-08-19

This show is about passion and energy, not subtilty or nuance. Not that there is'nt any delicate playing on this cd but the energy level which the Dead achieve at peak moments is as close to heavy metal as they ever got. Jerry almost loses it when he screams the chorus for "I Know You Rider" The band gets so caught up in the energy that they nearly burst apart. I can't imagine what it was like in the audience but I'd hazard to guess that it was an unforgettable if not life changing event. This is one of the most intense sets by the Dead they've ever released and is filled with a fire and passion that warrants their reputation as one of the great rock live acts. The Dead were really feeling their oats during this show, rolling thunder indeed. The extra tracks on CD 3 from the following night are equally as impassioned. Great Dick's Pick, one of the best.

The second half of this CD is the real Ace. The live stuff. Ace, despite his bizarre behavior, is an amazing entertainer and live performer. Cold Gin, Deuce, and Shock Me are standouts on this compilation.

If you've seen KISS live and want a taste of what Ace is like as a solo live performer - this is a reccomended CD. The studio tracks are just okay.

This album is a must have for fans of Ace's guitar work but be warned if you dont like his guitaring dont get this.His singing is great in here and since he split up with KISS it has allowed him to show off his skill in guitar solos and riffs.What makes this album great is Ace made half of this album songs from his solo career and the other half is live songs that he wrote when he was still with KISS.That's what makes all the songs great(except Words are not enough and Breakout)and this album Ace's best.So stop reading these reviews and buy Ace Frehley's 12 Picks and hope you get a free autographed pick inside!

Ace is back and he told you so! This compilation CD featuring songs from Ace's after-KISS band, "Frehley's Comet," is a very underrated CD that many people have yet to listen to. Hard rock fans have grown to appreciate it, but I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of any incarnation of rock. Ace soars on "Trouble Walkin'," "Rock Soldiers," (my personal favorite) and ALL of the live tracks, especially "Shock Me" and "Cold Gin." Ace shows why he is one of the 5 greatest guitarists of all time, up there with Angus Young, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, and Kirk Hammet. Just buy this CD and he'll prove it to you, too.

One of the odder collections in the Dick's Picks series, this four-disc set includes most of the music played on the first and last nights of a three-night run at Boston Music Hall in late fall 1973. With Donna Godchaux off the road to give birth, the band was back down to a quintet, and they're mostly found here in a mellow and airy vibe. Many of the tunes are taken at slower tempos than some fans may be used to--with the exception of "They Love Each Other," which is done here in a seldom-heard peppy style with additional verses that didn't make the final cut. There's some duplication of material as well, though you can't argue with any of the performances. --Marc Greilsamer

No MIDI, No Donna and two Dews, What's not to love?.......2007-05-27

I don't get the bad reviews on this. Sure if you want quintessential 73 listen to disc three of Dick's Picks 19 but these are still good shows. Both of the closing sets are great and disc three which is the first set of the last night and the one I grab for the most often has great versions Cold Rain and Snow, Jack Straw and one of my favorite versions of Wharf Rat. There is a trippy version of Eyes on disc two and the gorgeous Jam (feedback into Mind Body Jam) into Stella Blue and Dew on disc four is worth the price of the set alone.

Whelmed, Wildered, and Gruntled.......2006-08-01

When picking a bootleg or dick's pick, it's usually the set list that gets me excited, motivates me, helps me pick what I want to listen to. But of course that's a little bit of a decoy. Any song the Dead play can be miraculous if it is one of those magical nights, and any song can be demoralizing on one of those other nights or an off set. The real sign of a good show is when I'm under-whelmed by the set list but find myself surprised at how absorbed I get in the show. Listening to the beginning of disc 2, from the November 30th, '73 night I assume, when I found myself really captivated by a Here Comes Sunshine into Weather Report Suite parts one and two (not among my top fifty favorite dead songs), I knew this was a special show. The Dark Star, Eyes, and Sugar Mag were icing. Disc 3 has another patch with a Weather Report Suite into Wharf Rat, from a few nights later, and it's not a problem. We also get a great Disc 4, with Playing in the Band dissolving into a particularly spacey jam, holding tension but staying afloat. That feeling again: Relax, I know it seems confusing, but the band is here absorb the confusion and spin some threads to the multi-pronged signposts of gratification, which doesn't mean anything in particular but they are still playing, so it must, don't worry, they've been here before, just keep listening and you'll emerge out the other side no worse for wear. Good stuff. These were mellow outings for the Dead, but it's a little bit of a lazy couple of shows, with chunky pauses and directionless noodling at times, but good music for getting lost and found.

Not the greatest, not the most exciting, but nice entrancing ambient Dead.

Also, Donna is not there for these shows, evidently on maternity leave. Besides the absence of her annoying wailing, perhaps her absence also freed up the band to broader the spacey jams into new places. I know I pick on Donna, but she deserves it, her singing is really, really bad, and it is very embarrassing that the Dead let her sing for as long as they did. Her voice mars the best years of the Dead's playing, so to have a live CD from the Donna years, minus Donna singing, is a treat. Deadheads should buy this CD just to support the release of more from this all too short Donna-less interval.

a great collection from two nights.......2004-04-08

Many are dismissive of this Pick and I suggest that they could not be more wrong. Yes, the music has an overall mellowness to it and is mostly laid back, but there is brilliance in the delivery at every turn.

First, the booklet notes explain that, incredibly, the band's itinerary was confused, causing the band to almost miss its Nov. 30 show. As it was they showed up late for it! Thus, the first song here, Morning Dew, was a sort of sound check for the band. The entire first cd has lots of between song chatter, which I like, and by the time of Dire Wolf and Black Throated Wind (BTW), the hour is late, the band has a "what the hell" attitude and the mellowness is contagious. I'm no fan of BTW and I think that this may be the best recording of it I've heard. The first set closes with PlayingITB and because Donna is on maternity leave, it is a very enjoyable ending to cd one.

CD two has the excellent Here Comes Sunshine and Eyes of the World, but here the songs, which at this time are very new, lack a certain focus that the band applied later, especially to Eyees. Both arre used as spacce out jam fests (especially Eyes) and they lose some of their energy, if not their beauty, presented on other DPs and live Dead. Generally, the less said about WRS, the better, but here the song is still fresh and new to the band and it shows. This cd ends with a very strong Sugar. While I like cd 2, it is my least favorite of this four cd set.

CD 3 is from the Dec. 2 show and, I suggest, is one of the best first sets in the entire DP collection. Brown Eyed Women and Ramble on Rose are great songs and are rarely found, especially together and without Donna.

CD 4 is awesome. The PlayingITB dissolves entirely into a spacey jam and out of it evolves a fantastic slide guitar solo by Jerry that sounds hauntingly familiar, but I cannot place the tune. Any way it's all fantastic. He's Gone especially and Truckin are both great. And then... when you look at the last two songs, Stella and Morning, you may think that this is a really boring way to end the concert. But remember, these cds have an over-all mellowness to them and this ending is in keeping perfectly with what has come before. And the best part is that the Morning builds ever slow slowly to a fantastic crescendo -- the result of a tension building march that is finally released by the band. Maybe the best Morning Dew that I've heard by the boys.

One nit to pick is that the booklet is sparse and not that well done for a four cd set. Throughout the musicianship is very good. Especailly of note are both Phil's bass and Keith's piano. And most importantly Jerry's voice sounds oh so sweet. He is in his prime here both in voice and on guitar. You will get a great feel for the band's progression in this era by listening to DP 14, DP 1 and then DP 7. By far this is one of my favorite live Dead collections.

A good one........2004-02-04

I can't say that I agree with the lukewarm reviews of this volume of the DICK'S PICKS series. In some places, yes, it's pro forma Live Dead, but it's certainly no worse pro forma than, say, the SKULL AND ROSES album. In other cases, though, it's darn near transcendent. There are two versions of "Weather Report Suite" on here and the first one is mind-bogglingly great! This seques into a jam based upon "Dark Star" and then into a fantastic version of "Eyes Of The World" with Garcia playing some of his best guitar ever. The version of "Wharf Rat" included here is also a stunner. Where things get a little flabby is on Disc 1; this is a pretty faithful representation of the Dead's tendency to use the first set as a "warm-up" for more exciting excursions later in the show, and "Dire Wolf," "Mexicali Blues" and "Don't Ease Me In" particularly sound pretty rote here. But don't be deterred, there's some great(ful) Dead on this set which you won't be sorry you heard if you pick this up.

Wicked Good! During a weird transition for the band, some great music is preserved in this 4 CD set. PigPen has recently passed. You have the band (minus Mickey and Donna), the crew, and the audience all getting involved in this Beantown Barn Burner. Everyone is loose and having fun and it comes right through the speakers as if it were happening through the nearest wormhole or right around the corner. Imageries of ghosts of colonial patriots dressed as indians dancing to the beat of their own little tea-party, unbeknownst to some of the drunken crowd as the dead break into "Beer Barrel Polka"... Let it be said that deadheads are not usually known for booze. There must have been a bar in the back of the hall. Some cool moments are captured as Bobby tests the equipment, "whooping" up sound checks between songs as Phil cracks jokes and fools with the audience as the crew work with a scaled down version of "the wall of sound" to fit into the music hall. Rowdy crowd yet very intimate. Collected from 2 nights, I prefer to start with disc 3 and end with 2 (3->4->1->2). "Cold Rain and Snow" begins, turn it up, and 'Boogie'!! It sounds sooo good! Man, what fun!

This three-disc set combines a second-set segment from a June 1974 show in Providence, Rhode Island, with the complete second set of a Boston Garden appearance recorded two nights later. The band was clearly in a playful mood that week, adding new twists to old songs and coming up with a number of dynamite jams out of thin air. Bassist Phil Lesh is particularly frisky and fertile on the Providence material. The collection begins with a distinctive "China Cat Sunflower" taken at an airier, slower groove than usual and bookended by interesting improvisational ideas. There's an exhilarating 15-minute "Spanish Jam" before they eventually encore with "Eyes of the World." The Boston show's second set opens with "Sugar Magnolia" and for the first time ever its "Sunshine Daydream" coda is broken off from its body and reattached at set's end. Also of note is a lovely "To Lay Me Down" and the far-ranging 28-minute jam that occurs after "Weather Report Suite," a ride unlike any other in Dead history. Throughout both shows, Jerry Garcia's guitar leads are as supple and fluid as they've ever been. Though it lacks the cohesiveness of one complete show, this 12th volume marks a true highpoint of the Dick's Picks series. --Marc Greilsamer

Don t let this one get away.......2007-06-26

The Loser from Aug 20 , 1987 is among the finest interpretations of music i ve heard w my ears . Other moments in music are ' around ' and can be found and discussed due to the fine output and availability of music recordings to us , music fans . Beethoven symphonies . Electronic music a la Klaus Schulze , Steve roach and robert rich ( and Bass communion Steve wilson ) . Well .. But so .. what about this live show ( s ) from 1974 in the Dead s early 70 s universe in time .

Going back to music as being well done ( as in that 87 show i mentioned above ) , it is done here with a style and sound only heard by this band and in that time period . For me , personally , the band didnt come around to kicking a*s until about 1993 , then 94 and finally 95 ( That is my objective opinion ) , and many may think other moments were their favorite or more potent . This band leaves quite a bit of ' stuff ' or subject matter ' in any sense to discuss .

The 3 disc DP is fine . The playing quality on the first two discs is very tight & strong . But when you get to the third disc , pay close attention . After the nice Weather report Suite and let it Grow , the band slides down to jam that begs for open mindedness . The Grateful dead in 1974 had the best ( yes they did ) sound system on the planet . The best technology to amplify their sound - called the Wall of sound and its described in detail in a book called Grateful Dead Gear .

If you are able when listening to the 23 minute jam that percedes Let it grow , you can almost climb inside Jerry s mind , and think ' We got an excelent sound system .. let s take it to places we are qualified to prove its greatness ' . The jam flows into a Mind left body jam ( 6 minutes duration ) , then back into a bridge that would take the band into US Blues . After US Blues , a short tuning break and a 3.5 minute Promised land . Then without stopping a GDTRFB . Show closer Sunshine daydream . Encore Ship of fools .

Rest in peace Jerry . Thanks for leaving us with such great stuff

I've got a lot of Dick's Picks, and a lot of Grateful Dead in general, and this one is really my favorite. (I should mention, by the way, that I am a fan of Donna when she is in tune, and this was one of her better nights. Ok, I'll admit it - for me, there are some Dead songs that aren't complete without her, especially "Weather Report Suite," "Scarlet Begonias" and "Lay Me Down.")

The best parts about this particular Pick are the energy, the singing, the recording quality and, above everything else, the profound beauty of Jerry's solos. Quite frankly, there are Jerry moments on this Pick that are as perfect as anything he ever did that I've heard. Some of these solos are so heart wringing and soul-touching that they'll probably be part of whatever flashes through my mind as I leave this world.

The Dead as a whole were really on during this show, and it's one of the shows that I would highly recommend as a newcomer's first taste of what the Dead were really all about.

My personal tragedy is that I never saw them. In college I had "Skeletons from the Closet" and I assumed that that was the G.D. It wasn't until the late 90's, when I rented a "View From the Vault" on a whim that I finally understood, too late, what they really were.

Luckily, we have enough taped music from them to wind it around the backside of the moon and back to earth six or seven times. Dick's Picks 12 is some of the best I've heard yet.

This features some incredible and wide ranging music. If you like China Cat Sunflower (and who doesn't), you'll never hear another one like this!

But, there's plenty of other reasons to buy this... top to bottom, this ones packed with gems. If you like creative jamming, this ones a must.

I have listened to and own a lot of Dick's Picks and this is the best of all the volumes I've heard.

Disc !: The best "China Cat Sunflower" in my collection, hands down. Then, an incredible jam out of "Truckin'" that keeps going for about 20 minutes and then morphs into a sweet "Wharf Rat" and "Sugar Magnolia." Classic stuff. 5/5

Disc 2: Some of the best Dead songs performed damn-near flawlessly. "Eyes of the World" and "Scarlet Begonias" are a bit short, but they still have a distinct punch to them. "Seastones" may sound grating to some people, but I actually enjoy it and think it's a good transition between the end of one show and the beginning of another. "To Lay Me Down" makes one of its rare appearences and it's just plain LOVELY. The other songs are all good and well-played, but I wouldn't say this is a perfect disc. The fun of 6/28/74 is just about to get started. 4.5/5

Disc 3: And now, the moment you've all been waiting for: a 27-minute track simply titled "Jam." And "Jam" it does! Lots of themes are touched on... "Space," "Mind Left Body," "Dark Star," ect. What really makes this jam worthwhile is the fact that the band is so fluid and moves between the themes with great ease. Then we get perhaps the greatest "U.S. Blues" in Dead history, which isn't really much of a surpirse given what came before. A glorious "Sunshine Daydream" and fairly hard-to-find "Ship of Fools" close the set. 5/5

Conclusion: I think this pick can be summed up in one word: "epic." If you like the Dead at all, this should be in your collection. It's a very good summary of the crazy stuff that could happen in 1974. Sure, '77 and '68 might have been more consistantly excellent... but when they were on in '74, they were on much more intensely than in any other era.

This is the first of many great shows to come frm Dick, may he rest in peace. Dick knew what he was doing on all his picks except a few where he blundered slightly. Here comes Sunshine is a killer opening song. This is a good CD that delivers.

Great Show and a great place to start.......2006-02-23

This was the first of the DP series I bought and I have a special place in my heart for it. As just about everyone else has noted 'Here Comes Sunshine' is incredible. If you buy the set just for that one song you'll be very happy. And while I agree with the reviewer who thought the version of 'He's Gone' was nothing special on this night I still give it 5 stars.

If you're into extended Jerry jams-----this CD is a winner.
On CD 1, two songs: Here Comes Sunshine and Playing In the Band,
both have a little bit of vocals with long & strong Jerry jams.
If you're looking for just Jerry jamming, don't worry about the
bit o' vocals on these tracks. The jams are so fine that the vocals don't distract at all...in fact they're quite enjoyable.
On CD 2 there are 2 outright jams with no vocals. The first one
is vintage Jerry guitar and great; the second one is a psychedelic spacy weird thing...also great.

To my ears this was an exceptional night out for the band. It really captures a mellow and exploratory side of the group that flows for the whole two discs. Because of the this and the great song selection it has become one of my personal favorites of the series. One of the other qualities of this show is that rather than saving up the jamming for a 30 min Dark Star they consistently and creatively jam throughout the entire discs. I have found it a good thing that this release was created for 2 discs rather than the more recent larger Dick's editions because as a listener you are able to build a familiarity with these particular tracks rather than getting lost in a sprawling collection. Finally, it is my impression that Vol 1 is mature deep Dead and may not be what you're looking for. But if so...get ready to enjoy a real gem of a show!

To appreciate the dead, you need to sit back, close your eyes and listen. This cd is incredible but if listened to only in passing it can go unnoticed. There is no hit song, just a flow that needs patience to appreciate.

This is a great value for any Ace Frehley fan, 2 cds, most of Ace's best stuff for only a little $.... Personally I like Loaded Deck more, but both are great. Standout tracks -- "Words Are Not Enough", "Hide Your Heart" (Ace covers Paul Stanley with Peter Criss & Skid Row), "Rip It Out", "Cold Gin", "Shock Me", and "Deuce" on 12 Picks. "One Plus One", "Do Ya" (again with Skid Row), "It's Over Now" (it's one of his rare ballads), "Shot Full of Rock", "New York Groove", and the incredible "Fractured Too" and "Fractured III". Anyone who doesn't believe Ace is a great guitarist needs to hear these.
