Though many predicted that Roger Waters's acrimonious split with the band after 1983's aptly named Final Cut would ultimately spell the end of Pink Floyd, the remaining band members confounded pundits by extending their status as classic rock's most ponderous dinosaurs into the 1990s and beyond. And if the title was a gentle jab at Waters after a years-long legal struggle over the Floyd moniker, the music was all too familiar; some would say even formulaic. And lest anyone doubted that the absence of Waters's dour soul would lighten things up a bit, guitarist and post facto leader Dave Gilmour gamely took on the Mantle of Conscience for topics ranging from the cold war ("The Dogs of War") to yuppie self-indulgence ("On the Turning Away"). And if this album sometimes evokes an uncomfortable feeling of a band on autopilot, it's one that can still turn out the likes of the anthemic "Learning to Fly" on cruise control. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2007-07-04
I don't know why some people didn't like this album. I Love it. The Dog of War pays the whole money!!!!!!!!!
they were trying to sound like Pink Floyd.......2007-06-15
listened to this for the first time in many, many years....they were trying to SOUND LIKE Pink Floyd, but couldn't pass it off without Roger Waters....totally contrived and insincere....eh, Waters may be the biggest jerk in the world (not sure he is), but even if he is, he is one talented jerk....this is pathetic compared to the likes of "Animals", and the rest of their 70s output....these people saying it's equal to previous, Waters-led Floyd are delusional....if you like it, fine, but don't even try to pass it off as legit PF. they lived off the name and legend of Pink Floyd - give them another name like Endless Self-Indulgence and attach this album to it and it would never have even made a major record contract.
Oh, that lapse was more than momentary..........2007-06-14
This is a pathetic attempt for the Roger Waters-less Pink Floyd to carry on without their heart and soul. Roger was self-centered, sure, but his lyrics and bass were both key parts of the Floyd Sound that this album horribly misses. Basically, it's useless. Nostalgiac about the early '70s, back when they would make ungodly amounts of money off of Dark Side of the Moon and such, "three-quarters" Floyd decided they'd try to recreate that sound, using lots of synthesizers, female backing vocals, saxes and studio effects. The resulting album is, far and away, Pink Floyd's nadir.
It's hard for me to tell what the album's lowest low is. I know I hate the mechanical hit Learning to Fly. But that's not all. The Dogs of War was voted as Pink Floyd's worst song ever, and I must say I agree. Basically it's a pathetic attempt to rewrite the classic Dogs - even the titles are similar! Give me a break here, guys! Arguably even worse than that is Signs of Life (which could very well win the "Joe Strummer Most Ironic Title Ever" award), the rather awkward On the Turning Way, and the A New Machine/Terminal Frost/A New Machine suite. I guess the closing Sorrow is okay - good guitar part, processed and mid-'80s as it is, and I like the lyrics just fine, but no way it's a nine-minute song, you know? And is that a DRUM MACHINE I hear?
Momentary Lapse hasn't aged very well, and like the following Division Bell it was a very bad idea. Thankfully, Pink Floyd's '70s output was so good that this will never tarnish their deserved reputation as rock legends. But that doesn't keep it from being arguably PF's worst.
Pink Floyd Return With A Vengeance But In Reality A David Gilmour Solo Album In All But Name.......2007-05-23
Much as The Final Cut was in reality a Roger Waters solo album albeit it had the Pink Floyd name on it, this album is no different in that it is in reality a David Gilmour solo album albeit the cover has the Pink Floyd moniker on it. Gilmour worked hard to preserve the integrity of the band name, but most if not all of the songwriting and music is credited to him. However, this is not to say that the album is bad or lackluster. Although Nick Mason, Richard Wright, and the other musicians play second fiddle here, Gilmour did an excellent job in keeping everybody together with a common focus. There is a change of the guard here, not only in band personnel, but also conceptually as well. The common themes of rebellion, isolation, and materialism have given way to hope for a better world as evidenced in songs such as On The Turning Away. Pessimism has turned to optimism. Learning To Fly is an appreciation of one's environment by indulging in the pleasure of flying an airplane, a favorite pastime of Gilmour's. Without the dictatorial control of Waters, Gilmour could focus on more positive topics. The Dogs Of War says that sometimes war is necessary in order to maintain a just society as opposed to a condemnation of all war as was the case in The Final Cut album. Gilmour and company launched a massive and successful world tour soon after the release of this album that stretched all the way to 1989. The pig balloons were back in full force as well as the airplanes disguised as hospital beds crashing into the stage. Some things never change. The album and tour showed that the band's popularity stood the test of time with or without Roger Waters. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason celebrates triumph over adversity.
don't we all occasionally have a momentary lapse of reason?.......2007-05-09
This is one of Pink Floyd's best albums. The songs are all good, and the sound is very 1980's-synthesizery, which I like.

Out of control...wow.......2007-08-01
This is a very good track, and I really liked all of the songs, but the one that hit me hardest was out of control, which had the same effect on me as Taking Back Sunday's Error Operator, pure amazement. It's a must buy.
Never get tired of it.......2007-07-24
I've spun this disc twenty times at least, and every time it's just as fresh as if I just bought it. These guys are polished, tight, just great. The title track is great, but not the best on the disc in my opinion. "Disappear" is a beautiful, powerful love song, and would be great for a wedding. "Never There" is a rocking good tune about a bad relationship. Just get the disc; it's worth it.
The Reason.......2006-12-03
It is refreshing to hear a band come along and destroy the airwaves with a fresh brand of alternative punk-rock. The single 'The reason' was their biggest (and only) hit in Australia and introduced me to the band. I was a little hesitant to buy an album from a band that I had never heard of before on the strength of only one song but I am so glad I did. The album is packed with more potential hits and while 'The reason' is probably the standout track on the album, songs such as 'Same Direction', 'What Happened To Us?', 'Unaffected' and 'Disappear' are right up their as memorable songs on the album too.
I imagine the band would sound awesome live, and I can only hope to see them live in Australia some day. If you are thinking about buying this CD, I highly recommend it. It will not go down as one of the greatest albums of all time or anuthing like that, and nor will the band be remembered as legends of rock n' roll, but this is high quality music, and an album which is good to listen too from beginning to end.
"So what should I do, just lay next to you as though I'm unaffected?".......2006-05-08
A lot of people hate the song "The Reason". I'm not sure exactly why, I can understand finding the piano part repetitive or the vocals a little annoying, but I don't think it's worth such universal ire. I'm not in love with the song, but I like it for what it is. It's almost pure pop, but the rest of the album is more rock-oriented, and like the band's previous release, might not be for everyone but is pretty enjoyable all the way through.
The first two tracks are both singles and fit very well into Hoobastank's pattern. Pleasant singing, a bit of shouting thrown in, crisp musicianship, catchy choruses. "What Happened To Us?" has a decent guitar part and is one of the band's more passionate songs. "Escape" is a pretty catchy song, like many of the band's. "Lucky" is another of the band's atypical songs with natural sounding guitar strumming. "From the Heart" is another solid song musically. It's hard to find songs by Hoobastank you can't say that about.
There's a bit of a shift in tone after The Reason's title track. "Unaffected" is one of the best songs, it's slower paced than normal for the band and is easy to get caught up in. "Disappear" is another single, and I'm not a huge fan of it, but it shows the band is trying other things. I'm not sure why many rock fans are so down on Hoobastank, it's a little poppier and more accessible to the mainstream than a lot of bands but they still put together a good rock song. In any case, The Reason is a solid follow-up to Hoobastank's first big release.
hoobastank need i say anymore .......2006-02-16
you can see by the name that this band is aother coporate creation to the masses of 10 year old girls tryin' to be hip
and weepin' at the sickly lyrics of "the reason" god when i first heard that song i cried..not because it's a beautiful poetic song with passion and superb word-play it's because it made me nauseous i was ready to spill my guts on the breakfast i'd just ate
are these guys tryin' to be hip or are just marketted to sell
buckle loads of records to the mtv for the price of the decency of rock and roll
i one know it's the second
there name hooba-stank is a double edged sword because
when music fans see the name and cd on their local cd stores
they think "well they've got to be good because they've got stank in their name and any band they purposely puts stank in their name is gonna be bad right?" WRONG
yet if you like it then that's okay we all have different tastes in music and that's what makes un indivudual...

While it's cast largely in the same musical mold as its winning predecessor, there's a more palpable sense of romantic melancholy wafting through this soundtrack to the further misadventures of Rene Zelwegger's lovably hapless, love-triangulated Bridget. Though still aimed at adult contemporary tastes, it's also imbued with a healthier dose anglocentric cool via tracks like Jamelia's torchy "Stop," Will Young's elegant take on Sade's "Your Love is King," teenaged Alfie contributor Joss Stone's soulful "Super Duper Love" and the ubiquitous Kylie Minogue's teasing "Can't Get You Out of My Head." Mary J. Blige offers up a stark, melodramatic cover of Elton John's "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" while Rufus Wainwright (with Dido) turns Anna McCarrigle's (Wainwright's mother) "I Eat Dinner" into an emotive centerpiece. There are the expected 70's chestnuts (10cc's "I'm Not in Love," "Nobody Does It Better" by Carly Simon, Minnie Ripperton's "Lovin You") and the obligatory superstar remake (Sting and Annie Lennox muscling up his "We'll Be Together"), but a few surprises as well, including the deliciously over-the-top, nouveau glam-rock left turn by The Darkness, "I Believe In A Thing Called Love." --Jerry McCulley

Great Music.......2007-03-23
I love Robbie Williams remake of Sade's "Love is King". This CD has a great list of songs you'll want to listen to over and over again!
Love the movie, but the soundtrack is missing a key song!.......2006-09-28
What about the song that was playing when Bridget was in the water tripping on mushrooms? I LOVE that song! And I don't know the name of it or who does it. I listen to the clips here and it's not there!
Anyone know the name/artist for this song???
Enjoyable and Fun!.......2006-03-05
I actually got this CD because I LOVED the song "I Eat Dinner (When the hunger's gone)" when I heard it in the movie, and was so pleasantly surprised by the remainder of the soundtrack - I really enjoy Jamelia's 'Stop', and Mary J. Blige's cover of "Sorry seems to be the hardest word" is truly a portrait of painful sadness... I could go on about each song, but overall this soundtrack truly accomplishes what it set out to do - which is to tell the story of Bridget through song.... and it's A LOT of fun to listen to along the way!
Bridget Jones2 Soundtrack.......2005-08-29
Good mix of music from different genres with some songs "covered" by newer artists. They do a good job of re-doing ths songs in their own way without losing the original integrity of the song. Fun to listen to in the car while dealing with rush hour!
Bridget Jones soundtrack.......2005-08-03
the music is excellent, really pumps me up on my drive to work.

Product Description
The Midwest has turned out some great rock bands in its time, working bands, no-nonsense bands that rock hard for their days pay. Head East is right up there on the list. Known by most for their widely-anthologized classic rock radio staple Never Been Any Reason, they never quite got their props outside their home territory for the great body of work they created during the late Seventies and early Eighties.
Wed like to redress that wrong, at least in a small way, by releasing 1977s Getting Lucky and 1978s Head East for the first time anywhere on compact disc. The music still sounds phenomenal, thanks in part to a careful remastering from the original tapes by Universal Masterings Erick Labson. New notes have been penned by noted critic Scott Schinder for this release as well.
But when all is said and done, it comes down to the tunes. We defy you to sit still when Call To Arms And Legs comes rockin out of the subwoofer. The acoustic guitar opening of Back In My Hands sounds as crisp and clear as if Mike Somerville were in the room with you, and Roger Boyds trademark synth lines sizzle right through the mix. And these guys had a great insight into one of the key elements of rock: they knew how to have a good time while they were playing, and they were able to convey it to the audience.
These are park-your-Trans-Am, knock-back-a-couple-of-beers and party-all-night-long records. We could use more of them.
Customer Reviews:
Two excellent albums on one CD.......2005-12-15
The self titled album is even better than Flat as a Pancake, and Gettin Lucky is great as well.
Finally!.......2005-11-15
I know I'm preaching to the choir as no one is just going to stumble onto this review, so it'll be to the point. Yes, they should've been bigger than they were instead of being limited in appeal to over-40 Midwestern natives, etc etc. We can all agree on that.
I think Head East's second and third albums, "Get Yourself Up" and "Gettin Lucky" were their best, and the most under-represented on the otherwise decent 20th Century Masters CD. While "Get Yourself Up" is still not available on CD, "Gettin' Lucky" is the first half of this CD. Boyd was at the top of his game with the keyboards and synthesizers, Somerville was great with both acoustic guitar and the power chords, and the entire album is clean-sounding and more importantly, re-mastered well. Best tunes are the title track with the snarling organ, "Back In My Own Hands" with the aforementioned acoustic and synthesizers and my favorite, "Call to Arms and Legs"; a once-dated but somehow relevant-again environmental message but more impotantly, about as hard-charging a tune they've ever done. You want to turn that one up loud, women, children and dogs be damned.
Their eponymous (I love that word) fourth album is the back half of this CD, and not quite as strong as "Gettin' Lucky" as they de-emphasized the keyboards and synthesizers for guitar power (the further and largely unsatisfactory changes seen in the subsequent "A Different Kind of Crazy", I think, was a precursor toward this band's demise). However, it still works well if you're a fan. This album contained Russ Ballard's "Since You Been Gone", the only Head East tune you ever hear on the radio other than "Never Been Any Reason". Other good tracks include "Open Up the Door", "Man I Wanna Be" and "Dance Away Lover". This album has a lot of upbeat lyrics with some spiritually-tinged numbers, perhaps a precursor to Schlitt's later career as a member of the Christian rock band Petra.
You have to be a fan, but if you are, this is a must-have.

If You Like the Band...........2005-12-18
Clapton has said of The Band's "Music from Big Pink" that it "changed my life." "No Reason to Cry" may not be Clapton at his best, but if you like The Band (as I do), then you'll probably enjoy this compact disc.
Many of the songs sound like they could be from The Band, except for Clapton's voice. Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel play backup for Clapton, and members of The Band wrote two of the tracks: "Beautiful Thing" and "All Our Past Times." Danko shares lead vocals with Clapton on "All Our Past Times."
There are two outstanding tracks on this cd: "Hello Old Friend" and "Black Summer Rain." "Black Summer Rain" evokes The Band's "It Makes No Difference" both in sound and lyrics ("...and the sun don't shine anymore, and the rain falls down on my door..."). Listen to the two songs one after another and you'll see what I mean.
This album ain't Clapton's greatest but, to me, it's still good and well worth experiencing.
Hot a career CD, but solid.......2005-11-18
Eric Clapton at this time in his career was hanging out with members of the Band, and of course Bob Dylan.
There are several songs of note on this CD.
Sign Language is a duet with Bob Dylan. Over the years Dylan has offered several songs to Clapton. This is the only one they have collaborated on. Sign Language is not a great song, but I find it very interesting to hear Dylan and Clapton sing together.
County Jail Blues is another strong effort and has slide guitar.
At this point in Clapton's career we had not heard much slide guitar. It has a Mississippi Delta blues flavor that I love.
All Our Past Times is another duet with Rick Danko.
Clapton at this time was listening to country music and it shows throughout the album.
Double Trouble is another strong piece that appears on this CD.
Clapton in my mind is at his best with slow blues and this is no exception.
This is not his best, but a solid effort.
If you have never heard Clapton before this would not be a good place to start. This is for people like me who are really into Clapton.
Some Reason To Cry (l'm Out 12 Bucks For This Album).......2005-10-22
'No Reason To Cry' is, in my opinion, one of Claptons weakest albums next to 'Another Ticket'. The whole thing is a sloppy mess with weak, disjointed playing, no cohesion or direction, and much slurring from Eric on lead vocals. Where are the producers on this album?, I wonder, sounds like they were 'out to lunch' on most of it, or maybe flat on their backs on the floor! However, Marcy Levy wrote and performed well on the track, 'Innocent Times'. Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Bob Dylan, Georgie Fame, and Ron Wood make guest appearances that don't really add much of anything to the entire mess. To be fair, There are a couple of OK tracks such as 'Beautiful Thing', 'Carnival', 'Hello Old Friend', and the Bob Dylan penned, 'Sign Language'. His filler blues cover, 'Double Trouble',and Rick Danko song, 'All Our Past Times'(Both songs are covered much better in Clapton's live 1980 album, 'Just One Night'.) are very good. In 'All Our Past Times', there are the follwing lyrics "All our past times should be forgotten, All our past times should be erased." makes me think so should the master tapes of this 1976 half effort.
Some great flashes. Not totally uninspired .......2005-07-24
First, take this CD for what it's worth, not by the standards set before and after it. So it's not "461," or "Slowhand." That's not necessarily a bad thing. Like Neil Young. Clapton didn't always put out albums for their top 40 value. On the contrary. Particularly at this point in his career, Clapton had earned some license- for better or worse depending on who you ask- to do some things he wanted to do and let the Billboard charts be danged. Yet despite that he could still spit out songs that garnered radio play like "Carnival" and "Hello Old Friend," two of my favorite Clapton songs. Also like Young, as well as Dylan, Clapton was partial to using one of the several lush, sporadically used female background singers of the time. In this case that voice is Marcy Levy, who if her voice were absent from the song "Beautiful Thing," it wouldn't be as smooth or melodic. In fact Clapton was so comfortable with his stature at this point in his career that he allowed Levy to sing solo in the song "Innocent Times" as he played in the background to churn out what is in my opinion the best song on this CD. It's a real Levy tour de force, albeit a brief one. For that reason itself, this CD's worth buying. And while "Sign Language" is hardly the best collaboration between 2 star recording artists, it's actually a decent song, consistent with this CD's tone, and unmistakenly Clapton and Dylan. But also typical of albums/CDs of this time, they weren't chock full of hits from beginning to end. So what makes this CD, or even this era different from that of today? With rare exceptions many big name artists have CDs that contain some grizzle. Future Clapton CDs would have slicker production quality, particularly after Phil Collins produced CDs put Clapton's name back in the spotlight in the early 80s. After that Clapton became something of an video darling, but did that necessarily mean he produced better songs? Purely subjective. Try this CD. I challenge you to not find some appeal in it. I bet you find yourself humming at least a couple of the tunes. I dare you to admit you didn't find your toe tapping to a couple tunes. And I especially bet you find yourself wondering what else did Marcy Levy record worth listening to. I know I did.
THE MUSIC TRIES TO AROUSE, BUT GOES BLAH... TOO MANY DRINKS.......2003-12-07
I'm a git player over 35 years and love EC. This release on his comeback trail in '76 is not much to get happy about. Reports circulated at the time of these recording sessions had found EC drinking very hard and surrounded by the same type of musicans involved. Ex Herion addicts usually go to Alcohol to relieve the JUNK pain from Herion. It is no reason that this release fell on deaf ears when first issued. EC's playing is stiff and mediocre. Even the bonus track added on the CD "LAST NIGHT" does not leave you filled or do any justice. He is stiff on all his git work on this album. A shame. Maybe I'm just to critical, but others felt the same way. judging by the cover of EC in a bar with bottles of liquor in front of him answers these downer gaps.

Just A Good Artist .......2005-07-02
I Think its her best album and i love MELT song is one of the best but HERE IT COMES AGAIN is the best cuz it was in the top ten in latin america, that is her only single known in there, besides yeh yeh yeh is just amazing song to bad it wasnt released in america
She could've done better!.......2005-06-06
After hearing Northern Star, I thought this was going to be just as good or maybe even better, but sadly it wasn't. There were just too many sad and depressing ballads and too little rock songs that are Melanie's roots.
Here It Comes Again- A slow, but very enjoyable song to listen to!
Reason- The best ballad on Reason by far!
Lose Myself In You- Horrible. Not fun and highly unenjoyable.
On The Horizon- My favorite song on 'Reason'. Very fun and enjoyable.
Positively Somewhere- Another one of my favorites. A good song and the lyrics are amazing.
Melt- An OK song but definitely should've not been released. Not a good single if you're trying to get people to buy your album.
Do I- The only other good ballad worth listening to.
Soul Boy- Pathetic. I don't even know how that song got onto a CD. Good thing that was the only song Mel C didn't write.
Water- Another song worth listening to. It gets old after a while though.
Home- Not a very good ballad and definetley no worth listening to. So Depressing!!!
Let's Love- Now we're getting back to her roots. Lovin' it!
Yeh Yeh Yeh- My 2nd favorite song. Theses are the songs she should do all the time.
I've just heard her new single "Next Best Superstar" and thank god she learned. Melanie C's back bitches! I've bought her new Cd "Beautiful Intentions" already!
Thoughtful but Somewhat Bland.......2005-05-02
Melanie C's debut album "Northern Star" was well-received by both fans and critics. Her strength as a solo artist shined in songs like "I Turn To You" and "Never Be The Same Again". While her debut had strength and was musically diverse, Melanie had yet to impress with her vocals, and the inconsistent styles displayed throughout her debut made the flow from song to song rugged.
The recent release of Melanie C's latest effort, "Beautiful Intentions", shows Melanie has come into her own as a glamorous and feminine (but still strong in spirit) rocker. Her second album "Reason" falls somewhere in between the sparkly melodies of "Northern Star" and the harsh honesty of "Beautiful Intentions". Clearly, Melanie's singing is far more impressive on "Reason" than on her debut. The melodies are laid back, and most of the songs featured on the album would sit comfortably in the adult contemporary genre. There's a charming closeness surrounding "Reason"; somehow, the songs seem familiar upon hearing them for the first time. This familiarity, though extremely inviting at times, can often seem somewhat uninspired and, dare I say it, boring. However, Melanie's song writing is to be commended, and in particular, her lyrics are insightful and thought provoking.
Most of the tunes on "Reason" adopt a sunny and positive vibe. Even the sad songs have silver linings of hope and optimism. "Lose Myself in You" and "Positively Somewhere" both come to the conclusion that it's ok to be uncertain of what the future holds, whether it's in a romantic relationship or at the turning point of ones life. "Melt" and "Water" both have simple but gorgeous introductions, including acoustic guitars and subtle backing chords. Most songs have a lazy-summer-day disposition, but there are several moments of glory on "Reason", including the peppy and inspirational "On The Horizon", which features brass instruments and has a very infectious beat. Other favorites include the soulful and relaxing "Do I", with some of Melanie's best vocals on the album (her lower range sounds beautiful here). In "Let's Love" we get a sample of what was to come with Melanie's newest album "Beautiful Intentions"; it's easily the hardest rocking song on the album, with strong electric guitars and a lyrical intensity. Perhaps the best moment of the album comes with "Home", featuring Melanie's vocals stretching successfully from soft and lush to loud and commanding. The musical production in the song is also worth mentioning; there's a lovely balance of guitars, sparkly keyboards and intense chords.
Overall, "Reason" is a soothing sound to the ears. It isn't very innovative, but it sounds comfortable. The album's flow is much smoother than "Northern Star" and the lyrics are more pleasant to listen to. In spite of all that, I would still recommend "Northern Star" over this. "Reason" is so laid back; it's less impressive and more simplistic. Even though the album shines as a whole, emotionally moving and climactic moments are few and far between. If you really want to go for an emotional ride, I'd recommend Melanie's newest album "Beautiful Intentions". But these lighthearted tunes make this album an avenue worth exploring.
Absolute rubbish! :-(.......2005-05-02
I decided to buy this because Mel C was my favourite out of the Spice Girls, but it's a huge disappointment.
Here It Comes Again is quite cool and powerful, On The Horizon is a feel-good sunny tune and Positively Somewhere is ok but she could have done a lot better.

Deliriously Good.......2007-07-08
In their Progression Magazine interview, Pure Reason Revolution say that they try for dark, heavy Pink Floydish washes of sound, combined with light, airy, soaring Beach Boys vocal harmonies.
This is precisely right.
But the band--though it has many influences--is not at all derivative.
The vocals in general and harmonies in particular are thrilling and never overdone.
The melodies are long, complex, and well-thought-out.
The bass is driven and sounds like Chris Squire.
The drumming is relentless and yet modulated and interesting.
All in all, best CD I have heard (prog or non-prog) in quite a while.
Bright ambassadors of the future.......2007-05-23
I sincerely hope this band is embraced by the prog and ambient rock communities. PRR embues everything I like about atmospheric rock. Some have called it a mellow affair and perhaps compared to death metal it is mellow, but the style here is very dramatic, reminiscent of early Pink Floyd. Like early Pink Floyd, the emphasis is on soundscaping, with lush, etherial, Beach Boy like harmonizing, repleat with keyboard flourishes, yet maintaining a connection to modern goth rock. Its like Polyphonic Spree meets Porcupine Tree meets Riverside.
Of course, those of you who are familiar with early Pink Floyd will recognize the Floydian references in at least two song titles, Bullets Dominae and Bright Ambassadors of Morning (from the song Echoes). This is not to say that these guys are merely aping Pink Floyd, because they're not at all. The use of male and female vocals gives it distinction from direct comparison. However, don't make the mistake of thinking its another goth band, which also feature male and female lead vocals. No one singer takes center stage here, both male and female are intertwined, and blend perfectly with each other; both are competant vocalists (no acclimation period required).
Also used throughout is mass choir vocal sections, whether its actually a mass choir or multi-tracking vocals, its a stunning effect. Couple this with a band that very adept at delicate, etherial sounscaping as well as dramatic, symphonic rock, and you have a spectacular prog album. Amazingly enough, as bombastic as the some musical passages are, it doesn't come across as over-the-top theatrical, like with some similar music (Nightwish comes to mind), rather it remains quite organic sounding.
This album is a throwback to a time when an album was an artistic statement, when album flow and feel was as important as the musical contents. Fans of Porcupine Tree or any other Steve Wilson project might find this their cup of tea. Any fan of early Pink Floyd should like this as well. This isn't a band in search of a 'sound', they come across as a band who are playing music they feel. The only question now is how on earth will they follow this stunning debut. Highly recommended.
Challenging debut album. .......2007-05-16
Influenced by bands like Pink Floyd (particularly their earliest works), Led Zeppelin, as well as The Beach Boys and The Cure for their vocal harmonies, and even modern day Tool and some grunge elements, The Dark Third is a challenging debut album by Pure Reason Revolution.
The fourth track, "The Ambassadors of Morning", is a solid representative of the full album. It clocks in at a little over 12 minutes; blending numerous musical statements, from the Celtic folk parts to semi-electronic and analog synth work, to ambient atmospherics, to both male and female harmonies often sung in counterpoint, to classic rock guitar nuances. The song starts off with subtle keyboards while you can hear lots of sample sounds happening in the background. Far back in the mix, female vocalists hum wordless melodies before a heavier synth layer is introduced. This is followed by a very folky segment mixed with ambience and could make for a great movie soundtrack. The ambience generated by the keyboards is a testimony to the band's love for Pink Floyd. However, as the four-part harmonies kick off, the song turns into post-pop tune with great melodic sensibility. The multi-vocals take a back seat when the first chorus hits the tune with a very repetitive lyrical approach sung by deep, clean male vocals. Eventually the melody reaches its end and another lengthy instrumental section follows with lots of wind effects and sparse synth notes flying around. A grungy Tool can be felt before male and female vocals begin to sing in counterpoint and lead into the second big chorus that is repeated over and over until the last second of the piece.
The other songs are also composed similarly, always injected with a multitude of similar sounds, but when put together, they form these easy-listening pieces which indicate a promising future for this band. The first song, "Aeropause", evokes Pink Floyd with its droning rhythm and slide guitar. Three members in the band play guitar, and that culminates in a wide-ranging sonic pulse, especially on "Apprentice of the Universe". Also, the "dreamy" feel of the whole album fits the concept. Obviously, the band is quite interested in the phenomen of dreams and their interpretation, and that feel is perfectly captured on the whole album. That said, the avid Floyd, Zeppelin or The Cure fans may question the songs' validity, and to an extent, they may have a point. It's great the band wants to mix all these genres, but doing it right is more important.
The production done by Paul Northfield (Gentle Riant, Rush) is amazing; he's rendered an incredible sonic intensity on this album.
The true future of Prog.......2007-05-09
Just take a look at the name-checks of the 7 reviewers who have already shared their thoughts (Porcupine Tree/Pink Floyd/RPWL/Pineapple Thief/Riverside/Opeth/Radiohead). That sure makes for mouth-watering listening. Even Beach Boys and Nirvana were thrown in. That's what this CD does to you. I have a few more name-checks that spring to mind in parts on the Album. They are Blow Up Hollywood (Especially the quieter piano parts on the CD Opener Aeropause), early 70s Moody Blues Multi Vocal harmonies at times, Melting Euphoria programming Special effects in places, and Platinum Fleetwood Mac Vocal harmonies in places too (Most notably Christine McVie). There is an Enya type feel on the epic second track, Goshen's Remains as well. However, there is one band I am suprised that has not been mentioned in similarity, and that is Mostly Autumn. I am a big fan of Mostly Autumn but these guys are so much better, especially in the male vocals department. That is the amazing thing about this album. You cant simply break them down as they are all over the place. Someone also mentioned they are like Porcupine Tree's in their lighter moments. I agree to a point, but for me, the Porcupine Tree album in question is "Stupid Dream" (Most notably the Climatic guitar pieces). Same goes with Riverside. The album flows beautifully from start to finish, and as has been mentionned, there is a hidden track at the end of the last track after 5 minutes of silence. I dont know why bands do this (Pineapple Thief has done it as well for instance). It should have been shown as Track 10. I wouldnt have known about it had I not read another reviewers comment. There are 2 versions of "The Dark Third" CD. On this CD, you will see the tracks above but on the imported version (Same artwork but different colour) tracks 5 and 8 have been replaced by the songs "The exact Colour" and The Twyncyn/Trembling Willows". I am fortunate to own the double version of The Dark Third and can point out some interesting points. The so called hidden track mentioned is titled "Asleep under Eiderdown" as it features on the Bonus CD. Also featured on the EP are I. Nimos and Tambos (again) II The Twyncyn/Trembling Willows III Asleep under Eiderdown (Hidden Track as mentioned) and IV In Aurelia. However, although it is not mentioned on the sleeve, there is a fifth track being Arrival/The intention Craft (again). The songs not featured here on the full length CD are not as memorable and at the same time not as derivative. Perhaps it has to do with the Production. On the intro of "The Twyncyn", the heavy drumming vibe was very Bonhamesque circa "Kashmir". I especially love the Angelic Choir like harmonies, and the use of the Spocks Beard/Gentle Giant (God! 2 more bands mentioned) type multi layered vocals. This band is Special. VERY SPECIAL. I have seen Porcupine Tree on their last 3 Album Tours, but missed the current tour, and what makes me really sad is that Pure REason Revolution are currently supporting them. This CD is constantly playing in my deck, and will do so for quite a while (At least till the next PRR CD comes out). Definitely my favourite album of the year so far. Nuff said.
Derivative but Tasty.......2006-11-04
When is Progressive Rock not Progressive? When it's Pure Reason Revolution. The band doesn't really break any new ground here, but they produce an able auditory experience all the same. The most prominent theme on the album is lifted straight out of the lyrics to Pink Floyd's "Echoes": "...a million bright ambassadors of morning...". There are many "echoes" of past prog bands contained within the album: Opeth, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, Dream Theater, more. Perhaps the combining of these elements could be considered progressive? Perhaps.
Much has been made of PRR's vocals. There are subtle harmonies, and the layering of the male and female vox is striking at times, but the lyrical phrasing is redundant and boring. There's an almost chant-like feel to it, a very plainsong styled approach. The phrasing is so similar from tune to tune that a certain sameness sinks in, defeating the effect of the instrumental artistry. Singing across the instrumental phrase, not along with it, might help next time. And, please, vary phrasing song to song!
The problem for me was that the band had been hyped by the on-line progressive rock community, perhaps to an unrealistic degree... maybe there was no way they could have lived up to the created expectations.
Still, it's listenable, new, "progressive" rock, and if you enjoy the bands mentioned above, you may enjoy PRR.

Back in 1969, Rod Stewart's résumé included a stint as Jeff Beck's singer. He'd also just joined the Faces, who dropped the "Small" from their name when Stewart and Ron Wood signed on as members. But his husky, graveled rasp shone best that year as he took on covers of the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man" and Ewan McColl's "Dirty Old Town" on his solo debut. As this three-CD set thoroughly demonstrates, Stewart was like Joe Cocker in that he crossed boundaries effortlessly, integrating a boozy, acoustic-backed sway with an R&B churn and creating a new rock sound that captured the fancy of fans on both sides of the Atlantic. He peaked with Every Picture Tells a Story's title track; the folkie, soulful "Maggie May"; and the jaw-dropping "(I Know) I'm Losing You." With those 1971 hits, he arrived full-blown as a sequin-ready superstar. His Mercury period ended in 1974 with Smiler, and this set trails off with that album and five tracks previously unreleased in the U.S. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Great collection but they should do a 67-74 compilation.......2007-08-02
I know "Storyteller" covers a lot of territory (around 40 from the classic era).
The songs on here are great, classic, goes without saying. Smiler's not one of his best, but there's more than enough to make up for it.
There are flaws with compilations regarding Stewart though, mostly due to being on different labels. This would get a 4.5 out of 5, but closer to 5.
But the best compilation would involve Faces, Jeff Beck and his solo material plus promo and live clips on DVD.
The 'Classic' Rod The Mod.......2007-07-13
Before he even dreamed of recording the ill-fated 'Blondes Have More Fun', Rod Stewart was churning out classic after classic. This boxed set captures him at his artistic peak at Mercury Records. It includes tracks like his rendition of the Stones' 'Street Fighting Man', 'You Wear It Well', 'Reason To Believe', and, of course, the unforgettable 'Maggie May'. This boxed set also includes the malignant 'Smiler', but it doesn't mean that the album doesn't rock! Personally, this would be a great buy for me since it also includes unreleased takes and tracks. This boxed set is essential for any rock library or Rod the Mod enthusiast.
Great music, careless remastering.......2007-02-12
As nice as it is to have all of Rod's Mercury material in one place, I have to agree with the Serbian reviewer below regarding the occasional but noticeable digital "pops" that mar what would otherwise be an excellent remastering job. What's the point of a remastering project if the end product contains obvious, irritating flaws like this? Looks like I'll be ripping the bonus tracks and selling this set off, hanging onto my individual remasters.
Fantastic Set.......2006-11-28
Mercury packages and repackages songs from Rod's first five albums all the time, usually with little regard for the selections--and they normally come out when he is releasing a new CD (on another label). This set however, is different. This one makes sense, is well packaged and even contains bonus tracks. And at $28 (or so), it's actually a bargain. If you are looking back and want to know about early solo Rod Stewart, this is all you need--it contains his first five solo CDs plus a few singles. Great Stuff. Rod's career went up and down and up and down after this but this is consistently great music. Even the much harassed at the time SMILER sounds good today. Highly recommended.
Rod Stewart's best.......2005-11-20
In my opinion these are Rod Stewart's very best songs. This is solid late 60's/early 70's style rock, pervaded by easily discernable blues influences. An excellent mix of musicians and songs to synergize with Stewart's admirably raspy vocals. Later material seems designed more to showcase Stewart's voice, wheras the powerful vocals in these songs are an element of something much bigger. If you are more a fan of the disco influenced "Do ya think I'm sexy," and later works, then you will probably disagree with me on this. I like a few of the later Rod Stewart songs too, but the oldies contained in this box-set are my absolute favorites.

better live act then on record.......2006-08-19
what makes this duo good is the simplicity of the set up...drums and keyboards. This is a band that attracts musicians more than casual listeners.
"Becky" is the best track.
I saw them live and they were more interesting then good. The music is more background music, with a tribal sound, then anything else.
What makes them interesting and different also gives them limitations. There is only so much you can do with this set up. Ask Medeski, Martin and Wood...which blows this band away.
The Magic of Two.......2005-11-06
Organ and Drums, that's it. Well that, a few effects pedals and some amazing drum programming make "The Duo" one of the most notable acts in music today. Best expierenced live, the Duo captures the energy of their live performaces on Best Reason to Buy the Sun. Becky & Sunny's Song stand out as masterworks of melody and groove.
Amazing Duo.......2005-08-23
Joe Russo and Marco Benevento are quickly becoming indie/jazz/rock infusion legends! With only a set of drums and an organ, most songs on this CD could easily be part of a soundtrack to any movie. Never mind there are no lyrics-it's not something you even notice(and believe me--instrumentals are not really my cup of tea--but Benevento/Russo managed to change all of that!). Best Reasons takes you on a wild ride from head-bangin'hard rock to mind-altering acid jazz to groovin' blues and beyond. Favorites include "Becky", "Sunny's Song" and Scratchitti. Never heard of "The Duo???" YOU WILL.
Terrific Album from TWO Amazing Musicians.......2005-05-19
Saw these two musicians live... AMAZING!! Didn't initially get into some songs on the album, but found they got better and better each play.. Tracks.. Becky, Sunnys Song and ?Marks are my favorites ..Album is on my everyday in my car playlist. Enjoy even more each time I hear it.. A must have .. and "A MUST SEE LIVE SHOW".
Best Reasons To Buy This Album.......2005-04-06
The Benevento Russo Duo have been constantly expanding their musical horizons as well as their talent. In a Jamband scene full of 5, 6, and 7 member bands, the B.R.D. seem to do just fine with an organ/synth and a drum kit. Best Reason to Buy the Sun starts off with a Techno beat happy song called Becky which is sure to get anyone to nod their heads in enjoyment. The next few songs on the album follow the same abstract jazzy weirdness. Some songs on this album probably will only sound good with help from various drugs (9 x 9's trippy melodies). Scratchitti may be the only song I can't listen to on the album. There is a strange overdrive put on the organ and sounds like some heavy metal song although there are even points in this song where I can say I enjoyed in the slower sections. The last song, My Pet Goat, uses a drum machine to create fast techno beats in contrast to the soft piano Benevento plays on, while making melodies on the organ. For a good time go see these guys in concert, it's a great show, or, for relatively cheaper, you can buy this album and hang out in your bedroom. I highly suggest buying this album for fans of Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Phish, or Sound Sector Tribe 9. I belive this is the start of a great new Duo.

Customer Reviews:
Their best cd to date 3/20/07.......2007-03-21
This cd rips your face off right from the beginning till the very last song. This is Chimaira's best cd ever. Andols(drummer) is awesome. If you like double bass drum you will love this cd. Plus this is a younger group but they still do guitar solos. You won't find none of that nu- metal [...] here.
Sophomore slump? I don't think so!.......2007-02-02
Keeping up with their feirce debut yet still managing to kick things up a notch in not only the melody and sheer musicianship but also in lyrical content, Chimaira delivers a brilliant sophomore album in `The Impossibility of Reason'. Bringing together crushing guitars and thundering drums this band illuminates and burns bright on these 12 tracks. The opener `Cleansation' is freaking brilliant, but I will say that I was a little less impressed with `Implements of Destruction', their closing track. I expected something a little more jolting, like `Jade' from `Pass Out of Existence'. The band delivers on tracks like `Pictures in the Gold Room' (just listen to those drums!) and my personal favorites `Stigmurder' and `Eyes of a Criminal'. It's a perfect transition album from their debut to their third self titled release.
No what i was expecting.......2006-11-03
good cd, but it was a little heavy for me. and that saying alot cuz i like heavy.
Excellent!.......2006-10-06
Just great. These guys remind me alot of Nothingface. Great songs, great playing, great vocals. The perfect heavy package
Powerful, heavy and totally brilliant heavy metal album..........2006-07-13
I saw these guys live a few months back playing alongside the likes of Unearth and madball, and i have to say they were f*****g amazing! Every song on this album is totally brilliant, heavy-as-5H1t brutallity, and the ripps are awsome too.
Ok, so theres not much experimentation with vocals, but who cares!? the music is great, and to be honest, where metal is concerned, the music is soooo much more important then the vocals or lyrics.
Anyone who loves metal, buy this.
