Hardly as essential as the epochal adultery concept album Caught Up (hardly dated in subject matter, it seems, since its appearance in 1974) or Rhino's double-disc Totally Unrestricted! (prime stuff including not only her hits and signature pieces, but a slammin' cover of Bad Company's "Feel Like Makin' Love" that should have won this prime soul woman at least a couple of rock tours), this disc will do for Jackson fans nonetheless. For all the words that have been written about her ultrafrankness, it's long been clear that she's very much in the tradition--one that ranges from upstanding preacher Joe Tex to tough broads like Laura Lee. Can she help it if she has a larger, ahem, vocabulary? Sure, applaud her spiritual daughter Lil' Kim, but Millie's still the master. The mistress? Ain't that just her lot in life. --Rickey Wright
