About the Artist
They Call Him Hippo, short for Hippopotamus. A name he gave himself in high school. He grew up in the electronic era of the 80's. By the time he turned 18 he was pushing drum machine buttons instead of plucking strings. An original member of Hand Held Aspects, Hippo is responsible for 80 percent of the groups production. After the release of the Group's first album, Hippo decided to produce and record solo material. His sound is described as an eclectic blend of soul, funk, blues and psychadelia. A true melting-pota-music.

Within the many tracks on Hippo's Hippodrome, there's not one bad moment. You can listen to this from start to finish, without ever once being tempted to reach for the skip button. Unless it's skipping back, to hear the song again. Songs don't want to be plush, extensive, big, thick or anything. The spectrum goes from not complex to very complex. There's very few detours on this record, but a lot of going straight. In all its smallness, this album is very grande.

I love Sousa marches but this recording while comprehensive and cheep lacks much to be desired in the musical rendension. It lacks the spark and musicality of Sousa.

This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.

When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.

This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.

Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.

I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.

Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!

This set consists of every recording released under the name of "the Sousa Band", from 1897-1930. Since some of these recordings are over 100 years old, they tend to be somewhat scratchy and occasionally faint. If you're a casual fan or you're buying your first Sousa record, your money can be better spent elsewhere.

However, these recordings are an invaluable resourse for students, performers, and teachers. Even with the limitations of early recording devices, there is no better demonstration of the style and nuance of the "March King" than these performances under his own baton. Also, the chance to actually hear Sousa's voice as he introduces the great "Stars and Stripes Forever" is to step into the past.

    This continuing series promises to develope many aspects of Sousa's varied music. The only marches the listener may recognize are the two favorites in the beginning. These are almost required selections and Naxos has been very clever in doling out the favorite Sousa marches (so many times recorded before) with lesser known fare. Here we have many interesting other works by Sousa that have been seldem offered before. These include numerous pieces for symphonic wind band and draw upon Sousa's fascination with operatic composition. As a composer, Sousa was probably one the most varied of his kind. Indeed, you can put together a complete program of music as there is so much variety to chose from. Such has been done here with this series. The inspired baton of Keith Brian, famed for his New Sousa Band concerts here leads the venerable Royal Artillery Band of the British army. This is a winning combination, as the RA band is one of the oldest and most distinglished bands in the UK. With 49 pieces, the band can produce the kind of robust sound which is required for many of Sousa's works, but there is also a delicacy of performance here which Keith Brian brings out in the band. This third volume in the Naxos series is promising to be one of the best of its kind ever put together. Here we can finally get that eccletic mix that made a Sousa concert such a memorable and fun event. Keith Brian, Naxos and the Royal Artillery Band are a winning combination.

      For those who have never heard the Royal Marines Band you have a real treat in store. The crisp precision of this Band coupled with the brilliance of Sousa is a combination that is irresistable. The selections are classic turn of the century American culture set to music. A must for Sousa collectors, and a joy for those who want to hear a precision military Band!

        Alright,now THIS is more like it.An eleven track live performance from an early Iggy tour,mind you.This might've been his very first European solo outing.From his 'Lust For Life' trek.The sound isn't perfect,but outside of a few moments of annoying feedback,'Hippodrome-Paris '77' is a darn good live release.Some killer cuts include "Lust For Life","Passenger",the rarely played Mitch Ryder cover "C.C.Rider/Jenny Take A Ride" and a couple of Stooges numbers "Raw Power" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog".Line-up:Iggy-vocals,Stacey Heydon-guitar,former Stooges member Scott Thurston-keyboards,Tony Sales-bass and Hunt Sales-drums.A must-have.

        "This is the best f---ing band in the world right now," Iggy tells the audience, and it is. The live versions of these songs are (if it's possible) even better than the album versions. It isn't a perfect recording (there are some horrible feedback squeals in the Passenger) but it's well worth trying to ignore them. The rest of the CD is absolutely wonderful. This one actually includes Iggy's comments between songs (including a discussion between him and drummer Hunt Sales that I would die to be able to understand) which are really interesting, especially when he orders the audience not to applaud after his songs. This is definitely better than TV Eye Live. You can actually hear the backing vocals here! (If you're not a fan of the Sales brothers, well, too bad.)

        taken from the lust for life tour, iggy and his band(stacey heydon, tony sales, hunt sales , and former stooges keyboardist scott thurston [replacing david bowie]) put on an excellent show. iggy informs the audience that there are no stars on stage and they don't have to applaud. he also names off his band members and and mentions that all the men in his band came to visit him in the mental hospital.this album is an unpolished one take from the september 23,1977 concert at hippodrome in paris france and features the rareities "cc rider/jenny take a ride" and "that's how strong my love is". he rants a few times about the overwheling egos of rock stars and this endears him even more to his audience.this cd may not be for the casual fan but then again neither is iggy. if you want to hear music from a real band that believed in what they were doing this is an album to buy, a must have if you will. most of the bands that were outselling iggy at the time are now merely bargain bin garbage, but the ig will always be cool and will always be himself he didn't need to dress up in costumes or put on elaborate stage shows to secure his following.john lennon once said "give me some truth" well iggy delivered, even when no one wanted to hear it.
